Biden ‘88 ad: The White House is no place to learn on the job; Update: Sources tell Fineman Biden’s the “likely” pick

Comedy gold courtesy of Ben Smith to mark Halperin’s heavy-handed hint this morning that Greasy Joe’s the one for The One (re: Halperin’s “Bo knows” allusion, note that Biden’s son is named Beau). Between this, his assorted nuanced pensees on race, and his tweaking of Barry O for being less curious about NATO’s role in Afghanistan than a subcommittee chairman should be, the RNC will have loads of fun with him. What makes the ad interesting is that after the first 30 seconds or so, it eases into a strikingly Obama-esque message: Presidency as “pulpit,” the world’s “lost confidence in us,” the same swill they’ve been selling forever as a touchy-feely alternative to Republican hawks. But what’s that bit at the end that “If the sparks fly, so be it”? Doesn’t sound very Hopenchangey to me.

Update: Grease-y is the word, says Howard Fineman:

Within the last few hours I’ve spoken with two of the finalists for the role of Barack Obama’s running-mate, and to two other sources who are close to the process.

My bottom line is this: Barring a big surprise or last-minute change of heart, the choice is likely to be Sen. Joe Biden of Deleware, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee…

“If I had to bet my life on it, I’d bet it is Joe,” said one of the other contenders.

Said another, “Barack is moving toward a seasoned Beltway type, and that probably means Biden.”

Blowback

Obama spoke to the VFW Convention in Orlando this morning, and the only Democrat he mentioned by name was Biden.

Biden is polling higher than the other Dem VP choices. Is tied with “anyone else.”

If Biden gets the VP nod…this ad has got to be picked up by the RNC and they’ve got to run with it.

Two birds. One stone. Sweet.

What the hell was he talking about in 1988? Was he seriously claiming that Ronald Reagan had hurt America’s status in the world?? Just wow.

Wow. “The world is losing hope in America” meme has been around a long time for Democrats, no?

From the debates:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: You were asked “Is he (Obama) ready?” You said “I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is. The Presidency is not something that lends itself to on the job training.”

JOE BIDEN: I think that I stand by the statement.

Should be a fun summer.

A lot of liberals cite Obama’s inexperience - err, “openness” as a reason to vote for him. They don’t know what he stands for and that is what makes Obama ideal for the whitehouse.

They’re liberals, it doesn’t have to make sense.

I hope independents pick up on this and realize the danger that is the Big O.

I love how Biden was saying we have lost our standing in the world back in 1988. So if we lost so much standing under Reagan, and then gained it all back because we were victims on 9/11, I guess the best thing to bring it back would be, what, another 9/11?

If it’s Obama/Biden, the GOP can just run this ad followed by a generic McCain ad. Victory would be guaranteed.

With Biden, republicans can really fan the flames of the hillary voters.

Here’s McCain’s campaign commercial during the dnc convention:

Hillary got (xx votes) during the primaries and nearly 50% of the delegates. Biden received (yy votes) during the primaries and got like 3 delegates. So, logically, Obama had to choose biden for VP.

Congrats on your wise choice, Obama. Let the campaign begin.

LOL.

john1schn on August 19, 2008 at 12:34 PM

Wow. I really didn’t think the Obama campaign could be as stupid as to pick someone as bad as Biden, but now…

I mean, let’s forget Joe’s plagiarism, his run-on mouth, or the fact that he doesn’t know a quarter as much about foreign affairs as his ego tells him. This man is the author of the single worst idea of the Iraq campaign: partitioning Iraq into ethnic enclaves after they had voted on a constitution and had sovereignty restored. The mind boggles at the humanitarian and geopolitical disaster that would have resulted, not to mention the sheer arrogance of the idea of carving up a sovereign ally.

And he’s the Prophet Barack’s likely choice?

Wow.

irishspy on August 19, 2008 at 12:34 PM

Been watching alot of blogging heads tv since I was turned on to it by instapundit. Really interesting. But I just watched Rosa Brooks and Timothy Noah. Wow. Two Obama supporters who aren’t stupid but have nothing to say. Russia is evil but it’s our fault that they invaded Georgia, but again they are evil. But no alternatives, just Repubs are stupid.

It reminded me of Biden. A smart guy, with no solutions, just complaints and 20/20 critique.(Except maybe a few years ago when he said we should break Iraq up into 3 different countries- great idea Joe)I say bring him on. Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll call his running mate “clean” and “well spoken” again.

Dems are all empty suits I think. I know it won’t happen because of the pro-life thing, but I would love to see Rudy and Joe in a VP debate and watch Joe get crushed.

Seixon on August 19, 2008 at 12:30 PM

The only thing Biden is good for is as an antidote for a possible Giuliani VP. I personally know many Democrats who view Biden’s crassness and smart-aleck attitude as evidence of street-smarts and intelligence, and as a very “familiar” and likeable type of wise-guy found in the streets of places like NY.

Part of Giuliani’s appeal to these same people was that he was a more refined version of that.

It’s not about what he said. It’s about daring to make a generality about a group. Dems don’t let people do that anymore–they cry that it’s racist. But they can do it on occasion, because they don’t have to follow their own rules, and because White Dems see themselves as protectors of you little brown people.

Well as an Indian if the only options available are being stereotyped as working the ass off in Dunkin Donuts and having an accent or eating Monkey brains, I will pick the former.

JiangxiDad on August 19, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Well I am not an expert on American social etiquettes but I believe it is still possible to stereotype some group, for example southerners, reg. Indian Americans I believe that though a minority it is still possible to take comparatively liberty with them, for one they are relatively well off ( and unlike no history of persecution unlike Jewish Americans), and second as Hindus they are the last significant group of idolaters and hence alien to the common monotheist experience.

By the way, apology for hijacking the thread, please resume the discussion on Biden.

AZCoyote on August 19, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Joe Biden gets the Neil Kinnock vote!

Way to double down on detachment with middle America.

Frankly, as crazy as it might sound at this stage, Obama might be desperate enough to add energy to his ticket with a surprise pick of Clinton as VP. It would solidify the base and increase his chances in some of the swing states. The media would go ga-ga over the head fake and pick.

It would certainly have a Hollywood look and feel to the process, something he and his crew seem to appreciate.

I just suspect he’s going to try a gimmick to put a little gas in his tank.

NYT from 1987

Biden Admits Plagiarism in School But Says It Was Not ‘Malevolent’

The file also included Mr. Biden’s transcript from his days as an undergraduate at the University of Delaware. In his first three semesters, his grades were C’s or D’s, with three exceptions: two A’s in physical education courses, a B in a course on ”Great English Writers” and an F in R.O.T.C. The grades improved somewhat later but were never exceptional.

The faculty ruled that Mr. Biden would get an F in the course but would have the grade stricken when he retook it the next year. Mr. Biden eventually received a grade of 80 in the course, which, he joked today, prevented him from falling even further in his class rank. Mr. Biden, who graduated from the law school in 1968, was 76th in a class of 85.

And they rag on McCain for his position in his class? He’s as qualified as John Kerry.

These two are meant for each other.
