Obama hauls almost $8 mil in Frisco, moderates the “racist” smear on GOP
posted at 8:35 am on August 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama continued his fundraising success in San Francisco, and managed to make his smear of Republicans as racists somewhat more subtle. According to the campaign, his event yesterday at the Fairmont Hotel for Asian and Pacific Islanders raised $7.8 million, which Team Obama says is a record for a one-time event. Obama raised the money by claiming that Republicans opposed him because of his “funny name”, but this time used Democrats as the foil:
The Illinois senator said it is “a testament to the American spirit that I’m even standing here before you” as the Democratic Party’s presumed nominee, because some Americans are “still getting past” his name, which he said some consider funny.
“Change is always tough, and electing me is change … and it means that people are going to hesitate a little bit,” Obama told a crowd of about 200 deep-pocketed supporters at a VIP reception for South Asian and Pacific Islander supporters at the Fairmont Hotel.
Later, speaking to a dinner crowd of about 350, Obama sought to reassure Democrats, whom he said typically “get nervous and skittish right around this time” and worry that attacks and mudslinging will begin in the final weeks of the presidential race. Obama campaign workers said the $7.8 million was a record for a political fundraiser.
“They say, ‘Oh no, here the Republicans come,’ ” he said, adding that some think “it’s hard enough – Obama, it’s a funny name, and who knows what they’re (the Republicans) going to do?”
Later, he said of John McCain:
“John McCain, all he wants to do is talk about me. They know they can’t win on the issues. So what they’ll do is they’ll try to scare people. He’s risky. He’s risky. We’re not sure.”
Obama may have learned a lesson from getting burned on the racist smear at the end of July. After the “race card” debate broke into the media, Obama found himself on the defensive. In order to trot out this theme now, Obama instead talks about how Democrats worry about racist attacks rather than explicitly accuse Republicans of them as he did in June and July. At the same time, he implicitly accuses McCain of using risk as a sort of code word for the same purpose.
Unfortunately for Obama, risk assessment has to play a role in every presidential election. LBJ made it an issue with Barry Goldwater with the “Daisy” ad. Democrats painted Ronald Reagan as a man who would go cowboy and start a nuclear war, while Republicans questioned whether a draft dodger like Bill Clinton could lead the American military when needed. Every presidential contest since World War II has highlighted the choices required in a dangerous world. None of this risk assessment had anything to do with racism then, and has nothing to do with it now.
Just this past week, we got a glimpse of how both candidates would handle a major international crisis. John McCain talked constantly to the press, giving analysis steeped in his personal experience with Georgia and Russia and explaining the stakes involved for the US and the West, as well as how to address the sudden example of Russian imperialism. Barack Obama issued contradictory statements and refused to take questions while secluding himself in Hawaii.
It’s not racist to wonder whether an untested, inexperienced Senator with no legislative track record and no military record presents a risk as President. Instead of addressing these legitimate concerns, Obama wants to paint them as somehow racist to even consider. If that’s how he plans to govern as well as campaign, then perhaps Obama’s even riskier than we think now.

After Saturday’s “Civil Forum” I climbed off of the fence. Now firmly supporting John McCain.

McCain’s Navy is looking strong. He looks young and BHO looks old.

While I appreciate the article, as a fourth generation native, I find the “Frisco” reference in the headline painful.
Could you please change it to “S.F.”?
aunursa on August 18, 2008 at 8:48 AM
Obama is the racist. He uses race to hide o try and distract from his failings.

Are there any immigrants left anywhere who don’t want to come here and turn this country into the same kind of socialist, opportunity-lacking shithole that they fled?
JiangxiDad on August 18, 2008 at 8:52 AM
The race card is just about all Obama has – he simply doesn’t have much else, as demonstrated Saturday.
Look for it to be played often.
CrazyFool on August 18, 2008 at 8:53 AM
Get your point, but seems appropriate to remove the “San” from the name permanently. How about “Crisco”?

No Neocortex allowed! Because it is assumed that one and all are liberal in SF, political differences need to be distinguished using the root brain to tell what’s what and who’s who: What do you look like? Who were your parents? What do you eat? Who do you sleep with? etc….. Political discussions that involve abstractions such as “what is the role of government in an open society?” are incomprehensible to most San Franciscans who consider themselves political. Identity politics is the be all and end all of what it means to be political.Horror of Horrors: the fastest growing group in SF is of children from mixed racial heritage. How will identity politics deal with that? I harbour a deep seated bigotry against the ambitions of my better half?????

At a picnic two weeks ago I was discussing Obama and the campaign with a San Franner. When I questioned him about what Obama stood for and his stance on certain issues all I got back was a variation of the hope and change and having no more Bush years and the war and words and half finished sentences with no more than a half inch of depth if that. If this guy is any indication of the typical “Friscoite” and Obama is their man then I fear for the country and its future more than ever before.
jeanie on August 18, 2008 at 9:04 AM
What else can he do? The only thing this jackass has going for him is his racist mantra. If he directly confronts McCain on any issue he’ll get his ass kicked again.
rplat on August 18, 2008 at 9:06 AM
McCain’s not going to win on the issues? Really? Are we talking about the same McCain who talks about the issues all the bloody time?
I’m thinking Obama can’t win on the issues considering he takes opposite positions on every bloody thing.
mjk on August 18, 2008 at 9:08 AM
And, as so many others here have pointed out, McCain ain’t the one constantly bringing out the race card. It’s that other guy.
mjk on August 18, 2008 at 9:09 AM
The town I live in is actually named “Frisco” and I find using that name as short for San Francisco equally painful.
Kafir on August 18, 2008 at 9:10 AM
There is no way that San Francisco can be considered indictative of American values. It is like saying a 1000 acre country estate is as beautiful as the cess pool where the feces and urine gather. Obama removes all doubt that he will not represent the majority of American voters by using racism to blackmail non-black voters into voting for him. The guilt trip will backfire as it should. Without racial hatred and class envy the democrats could not exist.

The left talks about “code words”, whose existence I usually doubted. But considering Obama’s past record of race-baiting, and the fact no Republican has formally, informally, or otherwise AFAIK said Obama has a “funny name”, I have to think “funny name” is code for “and did I mention he’s black?”. As is “risky”. As is saying “[they] are going to scare you”. There are some genuine race-baiting “code words” for ya, not the imagined ones clanging around in lefty’s heads.
Putting the “funny name” idea into the head of Democrats and not Republicans, so clever … NOT. It makes no difference, really. Clever race-baiting.
Paul-Cincy on August 18, 2008 at 9:14 AM
When Obama uses the color of his skin as the main reason for voting for him, he proves he is as an empty suit as Edwards.
volsense on August 18, 2008 at 9:15 AM
Obama HAS to bring out the race card, because it’s his best (and pretty much only) card.
What else does he have? Without it, he’s pretty much the black John Edwards, without the hefty bank account.
Racial guilt on the part of whites and racial unity on the part of blacks is the only reason Obama is in this race in the first place.
NoDonkey on August 18, 2008 at 9:16 AM
Let’s be honest. If anything is funny about Obama, it’s his ears, not his name. If he said “they’re going to say he’s got funny ears”, I would have some real sympathy for him. I’d think, it’s OK, man, everyone’s different. People who make fun of your ears, screw them. They’re sick people. Don’t let it get to you. I understand! But his name? Who cares. Obama.

Folks, he was just playing to his audience…
Most “Oriental” (I think that term is verbotten now, not sure) folks in America actualy did put up with Racism, and overcame it through the hard work of generations… they have very little sympathy for the perpetual victim card the Black play…
So that messege would not have gone over well with this particualr crowd…
Just wait until he gets in front of either a Black, or Liberal Guilt White Crowd, he’ll get back on messege.

Are these people Americans, or just another box to check off on the next census?
And speaking of raaaaacists, how is it that one of Obama’s more celebrated (and foul-mouthed) campaign consultants, Mudcat Saunders, gets away with having a Confederate Flag as a bedspread with nary a peep of outrage from the MSM or the Justice Brothers?

Barry O may not have much of a legislative or military record, but he’s got enough of a record of being dead wrong on military matters to convince me he’s too much of a risk to be President. He was wrong about the surge in Iraq, just like he was wrong when he initially admonished the Georgians to get along with the Russians invading their country. He’s also dead wrong, and incredibly foolish, to be advocating gutting our military and severely curtailing our military spending at a time when this nation faces so many dangers from so many different sources.
“Risky” isn’t a code word for black, Barry. It means potentially dangerous, and that’s exactly what you are. Not because you had an African father, but because you’re clueless about how the world really works. Perhaps if you hadn’t spent so much of your life obsessing over race and looking for evidence of racial slights in every word uttered by others, you might have had more time to study and learn about issues that really matter.

Wow. Here is Barry’s campaign website page on deep-pocketed AAIPWS
Check out the positively creepy video (“One Voice”) replete with ominous sounding drums, where Barry the demogogue says that his opponents (us!) want to divide us, that “…there is no black America, no Asian America…we are “one people” blah blah blah on the same flipping web page where he divides us based the multiculti heritage of his supporters.

The majority of San Franciscans are moderate to conservative. THAT’S RIGHT, THE MAJORITY! Because the local political class and media are so firmly left and far left and so firmly in control of the political dialogue and where the dialogue takes place; it is all but impossible to have a PUBLIC dialogue about conservative principles without having your life ripped apart by the local political comissars of the left. Who’s willing to put up with that? Most Russians didn’t belong to the communist party, nor do most chinese belong to the communist party. Same with SF: most don’t belong to the party. It’s an iron curtain maintained by social pressures instead of KGB thugs.
oldvannes on August 18, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Sure they are. That’s why they keep electing people like Pelosi and Boxer.
I don’t doubt that you have to keep your conservativism a deep, dark secret but you’re dreaming if you think you’re in the majority.

Because they NEVER have any serious opposition. It’s always some milk toast nonentity or a ‘libertarian’ who runs a chain of massage parlours. If a serious candidate even suggests he/she may run, they never get out of the blocks because they get a taste of what’s to come: rent-a-mob pickets your home and business, they harass your neighbors and friends, they follow your kids to school and stir up trouble with other parents and teachers. Who wants to put up with that? SF and Bay Area are one of the most dynamic entrepreneurial areas on the planet yet it’s PUBLIC display of politics is solidly socialist. Any surprise voter turnout is usually around 40% or less. The facts of life are conservative and most people here live conservatively.
