Necrophiliac fashion for Wrangler
posted at 7:25 am on August 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Wrangler has a new ad campaign for its jeans in France, and it looks like the venerable denim company has suddenly decided to make heroin chic look wholesome. Take a look at the images Wrangler uses for its new “We are Animals” campaign. The dead animals are women:

As Mitch Berg, Jeff Fecke, and Melissa McEwan point out, this is something on which conservatives and liberals can agree. These images capture the look of corpses dumped into rivers and lakes, a sort of murder chic that appears to not just promote corpses as fashion models but to sexualize them as well. The pallid skin of the back crests at the woman’s buttocks in the second picture here as the jeans get dragged off by the weight of the water and the movement of the corpse.
This evokes nothing but the unfortunate women who have been victimized by serial killers and rapists, and having their bodies dumped in woods, lakes, and rivers. Wrangler uses them to make death sexy and to exploit a fascination with death to make a few bucks. Someone should be ashamed.

What an awful way to sell jeans.
SoulGlo on August 18, 2008 at 7:31 AM
And that “The Boys Are Back in Town” ad was so nice and wholesome.
I’m trying to understand what this kind of ad says about the French.
BigD on August 18, 2008 at 7:33 AM
Well, who ever buys wrangler jeans, should have
a waiting period like firearms, and check to see
if any of the guys have a crimal record, especially
if they have a record in regards to sexual assaults!
And I’m kidding!
I bet PETA has a fit!
And Femenazi’s will be silent on this one, they
don’t give a rats #ss about women,there not a
womens rights group, but a Liberal political
group!

Its sad to think that someone thought this was a good idea and someone else agreed.

… this is something on which conservatives and liberals can agree.
Let’s hope that’s true. We might have some libs that defend this by saying “Hey man, don’t judge, if you’ve never done a dead chic, then how do you know you don’t like it? Necro’s are people too, man! It’s a disease! It needs treatment. Hey man, like, if that’s your thing, it’s cool. I’m cool, you’re cool. Cool? (takes a bong hit) Cooooooool.”

The TV ad is strange: http://adsoftheworld.com/media/tv/wrangler_animals
This is part of a wider “Animals” campaign in France. I don’t think they’re going for “heroin chic” pushed to the limit with dead bodies, it’s just a lousy-looking campaign.
JetBoy on August 18, 2008 at 7:50 AM
That ad was so dark I couldn’t really tell what it was supposed to be about. It looked like a trailer for a B grade horror movie to me. It wouldn’t induce me to buy Wranglers.
atxcowgirl on August 18, 2008 at 8:04 AM
After looking at the video it’s my opinion that they are trying to portray humans as just another animal predator in the wild but unlike the other naked animals the cool predator humans wear jeans. If I’m correct then I object to the campaign because it debases humans and brings them do to unthinking animal level. If I’m wrong and it is portraying dead or abused humans then they are just disturbed people and I hope the company pays dearly for their stupid decision to run these sick ads.

Wind Rider on August 18, 2008 at 8:17 AM
Well there’s a couple problems with this campaign. Only people who live in areas where there are alligators will probably really get it. Soon as I saw the pictures and heard that the tag line was “We are animals” I knew exactly what they were going for. It was probably even filmed here in Florida.
Either way I don’t think this is worth making a fuss out of. There’s no hidden message here about heroin or dead people. It’s just a poorly done ad campaign.
bj1126 on August 18, 2008 at 8:18 AM
To me it just seems like a dumb ad trying to make humans look like animals… I couldn’t care less.

It shouldn’t be that tough to make your own version. Rice, some broken spaghetti, a little tomato sauce and a few other things. Find someone who cooks, buy one last box for nostalgia’s sake and do a little flavor analysis.
I haven’t eaten Rice-a-roni in years, but it was a household favorite when I was growing up.

You guts have got it all wrong! France has a large islamic population, right? The ads are aimed at them. Because, as we all know, they have a thing about death. And have you ever heard them talk about us? To them we’re all dogs, pigs, or monkeys.

Nothing like necrophilia to start off the week.
The video ad did nothing for me. As to the print ad, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to associate dead female bodies compared to animals with France’s Islamic population issues. Sadly, that was one of the first things that crossed my mind.
Canadian Infidel on August 18, 2008 at 9:14 AM
Orzo would work well. Also, you probably don’t need to buy a box and taste test either — just read the flavorings/ingredients on the box and you should have the gist of what’s in there.
For what it’s worth, at my local upscale grocer they have moved the orzo from the pasta section at $2 a box and moved it into the organic rice section, where they are selling it for $8 a canister. This has upset me.

In America, they use Brett Favre.

Civilization has been the exception rather than the rule in the course of human development.
But this is the natural state of things, this is what humanity is reduced to without the grace of God, and this emptiness has apparently swallowed Europe so completely that the ghouls are running a victory lap.
Remember what John McCain said is the proper response to evil. Defeat it.
jeff_from_mpls on August 18, 2008 at 9:40 AM
Causing the death of over a million in Iraq is OK. Denying that that is what is happening is OK. Showing an ad that reflects that part of the human psyche that allows it all to happen is gross, immoral, and disgusting. Now I’m starting to understand.

Why am I not surprised that so much of the HA readership has failed to see the angle Wrangler are taking here?

Let me get this straight, to some of you, the ad itself is not the problem, our reaction is the problem.
I get so tired of more-tolerant-than-thou bravado.
Images have meaning, and through our intelligence, we can discern meanings and know their consequences with pretty good accuracy. We’re not the crazy ones. We’re actually the last vestiges of sanity on this little planet.
jeff_from_mpls on August 18, 2008 at 10:02 AM
I get so tired of this one-dimensional knee-jerk more-offended-than-thou pantomime.
I’m sure the new American Wrangler campaign will conform to your expectations. In europe, yes, they’re a bit more oddball at times. Suck. It. Up.
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Where does the idea that these are corpses come from? I don’t see any wounds. You can’t even see their faces. In fact, the one floating in the water does not look dead. Looks like she’s lifting her head above the water. Corpses tend not to do that. Also her right arm is stretched straight in front of her, not hanging limp. Given the theme of the other ads in this series, I don’t think they meant for these girls to be corpses.
viking999 on August 18, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Well the “Mr. Wrangler” campaign of the 1980s always made it sound like the company was anticipating “Brokeback Mountain” by about 20 or so years, so they’ve have a past history of approving odd ads for their product.
jon1979 on August 18, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Let me unveil LimeyGeek’s secret to what the ad really means. From his link, we discover that the ad’s message is:
“Man is an animal, but he no longer knows it.”
Get it? We don’t know we’re animals!
On the contrary, Geekster, we are unique in the universe precisely because we know we are animals. We discovered the law of natural selection via population genetcs. The law didn’t emerge from us. We found it. We are animals, sure, but we’re got a little something extra. And that little bit changes the playing field.
Human life is a very good thing. Respect it.
With that I’ll shut up. This is just a very important topic to me.

When I saw the pic on the HA’s front page, I thought the legs were shredded and bloody. I couldn’t imagine how that would sell jeans. It wasn’t until I clicked on the link LimeyGeek posted that I saw they were wet leaves (bigger image).
Interesting video ad. It did exactly what an ad should do – held my interest until the end. I’d say it’s a pretty effective ad campaign, and definitely more appealing to me than the whole Brokeback Mountain thing that Wrangler has had going for ‘em.
I also like the whole wildlife at night/deer-in-the-headlights thing.
IMO, there’s really “nothing to see here…move along.”
Redhead Infidel on August 18, 2008 at 12:56 PM
The two pictures above, out of context, do look like true crime images of the Green River killer or something. I think that’s the biggest problem is that without researching the campaign the pasty topless girl floating in the water is too much like a crime scene photo.
Americans still care about crime, unlike the Europeans, so we react to things that look like crimes with more anger. We don’t, overall, shrug at what might look like a dead girl because we still have morals. The Europeans accept riots, off the charts sexual assault rates and brutality as part of daily life we don’t.
But even in context this is fairly misogynistic. Portraying women as sexualized animals may seem cool, but it is really the product of a sexually immature mind.
Rob Taylor on August 18, 2008 at 1:07 PM
Is it Ron White that says “you can’t fix stupid” ?
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 1:11 PM
Rob Taylor:
I don’t understand. Rapes per capita in the US and Canda are higher than every European country. Could you explain?
Maybe seeing a picture of a women’s lower back and automatically interpreting it as having a sexual message is also the product of a sexually immature mind.
dave742 on August 18, 2008 at 1:27 PM
I wouldn’t know, but since England has an assault rate statistically higher than all but the worst cities in America, and the British police refuse to stop child child sex predators for fear of being called racists I’d think you’d have more pressing things to do LimeyGeek, than watch d-list comedians.
Hey, I haven’t read the Mail yet, how many teens got stabbed this weekend in England?
Never mind, I can just do the math since someone is stabbed their every 24 minutes.
It’s no wonder all the smart people are fleeing Europe.
Rob Taylor on August 18, 2008 at 1:28 PM
They certainly are, thank you. Perhaps you should provide the equal and opposite reaction?
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 1:42 PM
Rob Taylor:
By Europe, you seem to mean England. The overall assault rate and murder rates are also lower in the UK vs the US.
dave742 on August 18, 2008 at 1:50 PM
??
JetBoy on August 18, 2008 at 1:59 PM
Dave:
Only 6% of reported rapes end up in convictions in England and only 10-20% of rapes are brought to the attention of authorities. Given that, and the fact that America is much bigger population wise the fact that our rape (though I was talking about Assaults) rate is slightly higher doesn’t mean anything. You are more likely to be violently assaulted in England then in most of America.
Pretending the ad isn’t sexual is bending over backward to criticize my point. Perhaps a topless woman, from behind, isn’t as risqué as from the front (though there is one pic I think that is frontal nudity) but do you really think that photographing a woman’s lower back in an ad campaign isn’t supposed to be sexy?
Rob Taylor on August 18, 2008 at 2:00 PM
I am not disputing Rob’s overarching observation about the UK/Europe’s crime problem being rampant, only his profoundly ignorant claim that europeans ‘don’t care’ about crime.
UK crime statistics are notoriously ‘cooked’ by the quasi-political entity known as ‘The Police’.
Violent crime is a scourge in the UK. There are hotspots, sure, just like the USA, the elimination of which drastically flatten the statistics. But to simply compare overall rates is statistically fraudulent – like contrasting the entire USA with Missouri. The crime profile is more aggressive, the rates higher, and the proportions more demographically pervasive than almost anything the US has to offer. Shitholes like DC are notable exceptions.
The people are sociopathically left as shellshocked cattle in the face of this onslaught.
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Rob Taylor:
Rape rates are usually measured by surveys, not conviction rates. The percentage of rapes that end in conviction has nothing to do with rape rates in various countries. That said, your same article says that the US rate of conviction for rapes is 13%. I guess this is better, but it does also depend on the evidence, doesn’t it? A rape conviction rate of 100% isn’t necessarily the best, is it? Wouldn’t that mean that all a woman needs to do is make an accusation in order to put someone in jail? I don’t know what the optimum conviction rate might be, but it should be related to the evidence. This has nothing to do with your original statement about rape rates anyway.
This also has nothing to do with rape rates either. Rape rates are measured by surveys, and are not measures of only reported rapes. Also, this is a notoriously very difficult statistic to measure, and this quote that you give is even said to be an “estimate.” That said, “only 16% of rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police” in the US (Rape in America: A Report to the Nation. 1992). I don’t see much of a difference. Any comparison of this statistic would be very suspect anyway, because of the large margin of error. Also, did you know that worldwide rape is the most reported crime?
The figures I linked to are per capita. Population size does not matter when looking at per capita statistics.
You simply say these things but show nothing to back it up. I show the opposite using real statistics and you cannot refute it. It’s silly.
When looking at the ads as a whole, I do not think sexuality is any part of this ad campaign. If it is, maybe I’m getting too old.
Limeygeek:
And you back it up just as well as he does.
dave742 on August 18, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Limeygeek:
Nice baseless accusation.
Here’s a related statement that is backed up:
“A Government-financed survey released today estimated that 683,000 adult women were raped in 1990, a figure more than five times as high as the number of sexual assaults reported for the same year by the Justice Department.”
dave742 on August 18, 2008 at 2:55 PM
Fixed it for you. Duh.
jgapinoy on August 18, 2008 at 2:55 PM
I stand as a first-person testimonial to the crime problem in the UK, having seen the problem from the civilian, political, and legal angles.
You are merely flinging around marginal statistics without any analysis of their underpinnings.
We are blissfully crime-free here in the USA.
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 2:59 PM
jgapinoy:
Look at all the photos. You are focusing on one photo. Showing a woman’s back, even if you see the crack of her ass, does not mean the ads are focusing on sexuality. I see a lot more ass in the Olympics, but I don’t thing the Olympics are “sexualized.” Animals are naked. It’s part of the ad campaign.

Actually, the UK media shines a fairly regular spotlight on such corruptions.
You consider an article about “estimates” as being “backed up” do you? In the ongoing contest over statistical methodologies, especially on such contentious issues, you are content to merely accept what is shoved under your nose without critical thought?
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 3:08 PM

This is what it always comes down to for me on this blog. I read, do research (usually much more than looking up a few stats), and find results that disagree with everything said on this blog. IN the end, nobody can ever refute what I say rationally, so I am usually told that either I’m stupid, a commie, or “trust me, because I know better.” Sorry. I will stick to the stats that can be found everywhere that say the same thing over “Limeygeek” at the Hotair blog.

I know how safe I am in the USA. I know how unsafe my family is in the UK. I know I am free to make personal choices about firearms and home/personal security here in the USA. I know that my family have been cruelly denied those choices and left in the hands of a grossly incompetent law enforcement establishment. I know you are a cliched American liberal smart ass that pretends to know it all – real world evidence be damned in the face of aggregated-beyond-meaning statistics that appear to support your flimsy ideology.

I guess that’s how everyone on this blog does it.

dave742 on August 18, 2008 at 3:19 PM
There’s your problem, and I’ll bet you don’t understand why.
Are you of college-age? Or thereabouts? My experiences here in the USA are that today’s kids consider googling for ‘stats’ to be valid ‘research’. And boy, do they believe in those stats. They believe everything shoved under their nose, much like you.
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 3:23 PM
Limeygeek:
I have a PhD in medicinal chemistry with over 20 years experience in cancer research and my wife has a PhD in social psychology. I know very well what “valid research” is, because I do it for a living. I know how to evaluate data, and Limeygeek’s first hand experience does not get much weight.
dave742 on August 18, 2008 at 3:26 PM
Again, your critical thinking and english comprehension skills are embarrassing you. The ‘gun’ reference was entirely tangential, and the ‘chainsaw’ reference was a gracious dose of humility to demonstrate my stupidity. Neither occurrence (if viewed ‘in context’, as you liberals are so moronically fond of saying) has anything to do with machismo.
I do not have time for such things. My activities felling trees, hunting deer and smoking cigars tire me out too much.
(For extra credit, try and figure out what literary device I was just using)
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 3:28 PM
Ah, an academic. Penny starting to drop.
Since you are so casually dismissing my first-hand experience, you’ll consider it ‘fair game’ to do so to yours.
If this is true, then you would know that I did not provide data, only experiential opinion.
Your career has equipped you to crunch stats in medical studies. This is radically different from such highly variable sociological studies.
Can you highlight two glaring flaws in the glossed-over methodology in the NYT article you linked?
My guess – no you can’t.
LimeyGeek on August 18, 2008 at 3:33 PM

And that is why I mentioned that my wife is a social psychologist. I know how these studies are run and the statistics used for them.
Of course the methodology is glossed-over. It’s an MSM articcle. They are not going to print 2 pages of methodology in the NYT. No, I don’t see these glaring flaws. This is a famous study that has been widely cited for over a decade, and nobody has brought up any flaws in the studies methodology. Why don’t you tell me what you see that the rest of the academic world does not. This will be interesting.

Some of the earlier commenters are right. These aren’t corpses, but intended to evoke the fleeting images of wildlife normally seen by humans. The images in the rest of the ad campaign makes this quite clear.
Granted, some of the images make this clearer than others. Nobody could be blamed for interpreting the ones presented here as corpses without more information.
