Let them have their fun, Bill!

posted at 4:55 pm on August 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Bill Donohue and the Catholic League have protested the choice of bloggers at the Democratic convention in Denver.  Despite the list of bloggers having been public for almost three months, Donohue has suddenly discovered that Democratic bloggers have some explicit hostility to the Catholic Church, or are just extremists.  Donohue wants the DNCC to disinvite them with a week to go before the start of the party in Denver:

“The list of credentialed blogs include radical sites like The Daily Kos. Worse are blogs that feature anti-Catholic and obscene material. The two most offensive are Bitch Ph.D. and Towleroad.

“On the home page of Bitch Ph.D. there is a picture of two children: one of them is shown flashing his middle finger. Today’s lead post, which was written August 17, is called ‘Jesus Christ.’ It begins with, ‘I’m a really crappy Catholic who hasn’t been to mass in ages because most parishes around here ‘will’ insist on being aggressively anti-abortion….’ The writer then objects to some children’s toys on the grounds that they are more offensive than desecrating the Eucharist. The toys are actually balloons that have been made to depict Jesus in various poses, including a crucified Christ; one of these images shows Jesus with a penis. Several who commented on this image made patently obscene comments.

“Towleroad describes itself as ‘A Site with Homosexual Tendencies.’ Accordingly, it shows men in jock straps and underwear. It also has a post on Pope Benedict XVI that takes him to task for wearing a cape with ermine. Some of those who commented on this described the pope in a vile and profane way.

“Both of these blogs should be cut immediately from the list of credentialed sites. Neither functions as a responsible media outlet and both offend Catholics, as well as others. To allow them access to the Democratic National Convention sends a message to Catholics they will not forget. We look for Leah Daughtry, CEO of the Convention, to nix them ASAP.”

Maybe the DNCC can ask Donohue what took him so long to do his research.  Most of this is just plain silly, a typical overreaction from Donohue.  He wants one blogger banned because he criticized the Pope’s clothes, and some of the commenters were rude?  That’s even more petty than the original criticism.  As for Daily Kos, can one imagine the Democratic Party telling Markos Moulitsas Zuniga to take a hike?  Uh … sure.

Out of 120 blogs, these three are all that Donohue finds objectionable.  I’d call that remarkable in itself.

If I were Donohue, I’d focus more on the candidate the convention will nominate, rather than the bloggers who will report on it.  Besides, the worst thing the Democrats could do for Donohue would be to accommodate this demand.  The more hostility the Democrats display to pro-life activists and Catholics, the better the American people can truly assess the party and what it represents.

Does anyone from either party care what this bloated windbag has to say? He’s like a interview troll. He goes from slightly pious to insulting zealot in two minutes flat, and in doing so often humiliates 90% of Catholics.

MadisonConservative on August 18, 2008 at 5:06 PM

It’s an interesting move. Donohue wants to see just how far the DNC is going to go to appease the Catholics they think are fleeing Obama. Bill’s just seeing how far he can push them. (An interesting ploy, although, as a Catholic, I can’t really stand the man.)

Saudi girl executed for becoming Christian

A young girl in Saudi Arabia was brutally executed by her Muslim father this week after he learned his daughter had converted to Christianity.

Middle East business news website Zawya.com reported that the man, who is a prominent member of a “virtue committee,” first cut out his daughter’s tongue and held a one-sided religious debate with her. He then burned his daughter alive.

Observant Muslims hold that their Prophet Mohammed taught that Muslims who convert to any other religion must be killed, often in extremely brutal fashion.

Yeah, its those Christian terrorists that’ll get you every time.

I don’t know much about Donohue, but I halfway hope he’s successful. If the screechiest of the moonbats get dis-invited at the behest of a pro-lifer, that’ll throw a lot of gas on the Denver spectacle. Plus, anything that humbles Kos can’t be all bad.

innominatus on August 18, 2008 at 5:28 PM

Extremists at the Democrat convention? Surely not.

infidel65 on August 18, 2008 at 5:29 PM

I am not Catholic (although I grew up so) but I have to say that in Donohue at least the Catholic church has someone who will boldly and pretty articulately advocate for it. The Catholic church takes alot of crap from alot of people and groups. The guy is earning his keep.

P.S. Did the Democrats really invite a blogger called Bitch PhD with a website as described??

BigD on August 18, 2008 at 5:30 PM

As a fairly devout Roman Catholic, I really believe that Bill Donohue needs to chill.

First, he forgets that he is not generating a whole lot of positive vibes toward the rest of the Catholics, like me, from the rest of America.

Second, the best strategy against an offensive blog or media outlet is to let them go ahead and blog, or publish. The market place almost always seems to win that battle. Take a look at Air America Radio, or the former Mastheads of the great American press. How’s their profitibility these days? What sort of demographic do they appeal to anymore? Kos really have any sort of authority in any circle anymore other than the lunatic left?

Bill, being a conservative, you should understand this.

Third, if the DNC wants to sponsor a Transsexual Grandfathers for Incest Federation (TGIF) [ or per Hening, at 5:10 PM, the Hair Club for Men. ] and give them center seat, front row at the Democrat convention, by all means, let them. It’ll help the Republican cause far far more than you, Donohue, are helping right now.

coldwarrior on August 18, 2008 at 5:34 PM

Kinda OT but I am suprised that DU is a credentialed blog. They are no crazier than some on the list but I hardly call it a blog.

Dawnsblood on August 18, 2008 at 5:36 PM

For Catholics contemplating voting Democratic, there’s an old saying: “When you sleep with dogs, you wake up with fleas.”

In other words, if you find on-demand abortion, personal immorality and open ridicule of your Christian faith offensive, then don’t vote for the party that actively supports them.

God bless Bill Donahue. He’s a courageous man fighting a war most wouldn’t have the spleen for. Over the years he has exposed a ton of Christian-bashing and media hypocrisy and he has demanded and received scores of apologies from embarrassed educrats and media execs. He’s a tiger.

whitetop on August 18, 2008 at 8:55 PM

He’s a tiger.

I almost spit coke onto the keyboard I was laughing so hard.

Bill Donohue is an embarrassment. My wife (a Catholic) looks at him the same way I (a Jew) look at the anti-defimation league.

Squid Shark on August 18, 2008 at 9:35 PM

I’m thankful for Bill Donahue Too!! I have a catholic voice out there that speaks for me.. I’m Catholic too!!!

beachkatie on August 18, 2008 at 10:38 PM

I disagree with your premise, Mr. Morrissey, that Donahue should let hateful anti-Catholic bloggers “have their fun.” Blogging is a powerful medium and the far leftist ones spread lies, hate and perpetuate slander. I’m also glad for Donahue and his relentless efforts. We all know the blogosphere needs to be cleaned up and boycotting might be the way to do it. If they only have themselves to entertain and no good, decent people pay attention to them, they won’t have any power to pollute the web.

As another fellow Catholic, I agree. I hope no one believes that tool is representative of Catholics. With Donnie, it’s all about “me me me” and getting his over-fed, ugly mug on any and every news network that’ll have him. Again.

JetBoy on August 19, 2008 at 1:00 AM

Wow, as “fellow Catholics”, you people sure don’t sound like it. I’m Catholic, too. Sure, let’s side with leftist bloggers and their anti-Christ garbage over the head of the Catholic League. That sounds Catholic, doesn’t it?

Amy Proctor on August 19, 2008 at 12:24 PM –

I do not abide the sleeze that passes as art that is sacrilege in every abhorent meaning of that word. We know what that garbage is when we see it.

By our Acts, not our words. I cannot dictate my Catholic Faith to anyone.

What Donohue has been doing the past several years, especially on Fox, is demagoging…and in doing so he “proves” for way too many non-Catholics, and proves to the sleeze-mongers and other slimes, that all their stereotypes about all Catholics…intolerant, bigoted, tools of the papacy, rigid, dogmatic in the extreme, the Christian equivalent of the Mullahs and sharia, are “true.”

Donohue does all of us more harm than good.

Yeah, it’s gets a lot of print in the Catholic Chronical and other Catholic media…and a lot of us nod our heads in Church and in our homes and say…yep, Donohue is right.

But he’s preaching to the choir. And in doing so he is keeping a lot of non-Catholics out of the vestibule.

Frightening away non-Catholics who might wish to hear, see, witness what being Catholic is really all about. But all they have to work with is an image of an intolerant raging Donohue.

Donohue has made the Catholic League on par with the JDL…and easily plays into the hands of the sleeze mongers, and doesn’t even realize it most of the time.

coldwarrior on August 19, 2008 at 1:32 PM

I thought we were supposed to be happy when we are persecuted for our faith. Donohue gets downright snotty.

Matthew 5:10-16 is perfect for this occasion.

(10)Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(11)”Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. (12)Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
(13)”You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
(14)”You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. (15)Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. (16)In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Nothing there suggests you start complaining and persecuting those who persecute you.
