Laugh of the day: Obama blames McCain for messianic imagery

posted at 12:30 pm on August 17, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier, I linked to the CBN interview David Brody conducted with Barack Obama to point out the Democrat’s continued untruthfulness on the infanticide-prevention measure that Obama opposed in the Illinois legislature.  In reading one other portion of the interview transcribed by Brody, Obama accuses John McCain of deliberately targeting him with both messianic and anti-Christ imagery in an attempt to impugn his character:

Brody: Let me ask you a little about some of these ads that John McCain has been running not just on television, but on the web. Let’s face it, let’s call a spade a spade, there has been some Messianic references, there’s been some antichrist stuff going on, the celebrity, they’re trying to pigeonhole you a certain way. Do you believe this is being done on purpose?

Obama: Well of course it’s being done on purpose. They’re not spending a whole bunch of money to make me out as a good guy. They’re engaging in the kind of politics that I think we’ve become accustomed to which is you try to tear your opponents down and you engage in sort of slash and burn tactics. And very personal sort of personal character attacks. And one of the challenges for us in this campaign is how do you make sure those attacks are answered quickly and forcefully, but also truthfully and that we don’t fall into that same kind of tactic.

Obama doesn’t fall into the same tactic?  Really? How about on June 21st in Jacksonville, when he accused McCain of preparing racist attacks on him?

“It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy,” Obama told a fundraiser in Jacksonville, Florida. “We know what kind of campaign they’re going to run. They’re going to try to make you afraid.

“They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?”

Or perhaps July 30, when Obama claimed that McCain had already begun racist attacks:

“They know that you’re not real happy with them and so the only way they figure they’re going to win this election is if they make you scared of me,” Obama continued, repeating an attack from earlier in the day. “What they’re saying is ‘Well, we know we’re not very good but you can’t risk electing Obama. You know, he’s new, he doesn’t look like the other presidents on the currency, he’s a got a funny name.’”

As for the anti-Christ imagery, no one can actually point to anything coming from the McCain campaign, except for Obama’s own logo coming out of a sunset in one commercial poking fun at his celebrity, which apparently resembles the cover art from Tim LaHaye’s rapture-based Left Behind novel series.  On the charges of racism, Dan Balz notes that the Obama campaign cannot produce a single example from either the McCain campaign or the RNC.  Obama hasn’t let a lack of evidence keep him from perptuating his smear campaign against John McCain — which means he’s doing exactly what he claims here that he isn’t.

Besides, who was it that came up with these images?  They didn’t come from McCain supporters:

As far as I know, it wasn’t McCain that had women fainting at his feet in a series of campaign events.  And McCain didn’t write the speech in which Obama claimed that his nomination was the moment “the oceans began to recede and the planet began to heal”:

Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth.

McCain didn’t invent Obama’s arrogance.  He’s merely having a lot of fun pointing it out.

I take McCain’s recent turn towards primitive superstition as one sign he’s senile, Bishop.
No contradiction there.
alphie on August 17, 2008 at 7:46 PM

Of course you did, based on nothing more than you can’t admit that you are less conservative than the San Francisco city council.

After hearing of Obama’s plan to expand funding for faith-based community programs, you must have gone into paroxysms of doubt about voting for him. Those politicians and there wierd views about primitive superstitions, what gives?

Odd, I haven’t seen any signs that McCain is senile yet.

What I see in Obama is a man who hangs with domestic terrorists, creates his own Presidential seal and runs for POTUS after telling everyone that he himself wouldn’t be qualified for the job.

Now the second wife thing seems to be a big deal to you, did something in your past cause you to have such concern or are you really making a decision based on that?

I hope we get a conservative republican congress that can offset the Mahdi…or mccain…but it will be harder for them to oppose mccain…

If I don’t live in the real world I’m going to end feeding my kids an whole lot of nothing.

A horrible over-generalization to say that all divorcees are such, but there are many millions of phony Christians around.
“What religion am I? I was born in the USA, so I’m Christian!” Common error.
The problem is that Christianity is perceived as the majority, & everyone wants to be in the majority.
In places like Saudi Arabia & Indonesia, if you meet someone who says he’s Christian, he is. Here, he may be, & maybe not.

Have you always been totally happy with the candidate you have voted for? If so then I can see why this year is such a trail. I don’t get it. You vote for the guy that is going to do the least amount of damage and you work your butt off to get some decent folks in Congress. And then if that doesn’t work, what are you going to do. I think the masses, due to the advancement of technology, have shown that they can let Washington know how we feel. We no longer have to wait until the next election. Take that power and run with it.

But your analogy, though useful, is merely academic exercise. In reality we are not talking about disciplining a wayward child nor are we likely to change McCain’s behavior or get him to say sorry for his previous offenses. At some point we have to step out of the theoretical and make hard choices that involve compromise in the real world.

I understand what it means to find McCain unacceptable. I was adamant about not voting for McCain and even after he won the primary I said I wouldn’t vote for him because of my principles. He has been terrible for the party and I think he would be a lousy President in many respects. In the end however I won’t have been true to my principles if through my behavior/inaction I help elect someone who would be far worse.

I don’t judge your choice. I am simply explaining the process I went through. It’s messy and voting for McCain is the worst thing I could do with the exception of voting in a way that helps elect Obama.

Mormon Doc on August 17, 2008 at 8:21 PM

And then if that doesn’t work, what are you going to do.

One day, a man named John McCain looked around at the senate where he was a long time senator and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through caucuses and primaries. He climbed over some candidates and went around others until he reached the Republican nomination.

The coming Presidential race would be a tough one, and so John McCain stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn’t see any way to win on his own. So he thought that he would probably lose. Suddenly, he saw some naive conservatives blogging at a conservative web site. He decided to ask them for help in winning the election. “Would you be so kind, my friends, as to give me a hand in winning the election?”

“Well now, Senator McCain! How do we know that if we help you, you wont betray us?” asked the conservatives hesitantly.

“Because,” senator McCain replied, “If I betray you, then I would fail too, for you see I cannot govern without your support!”

Now this seemed to make some sense to the conservatives. But they asked. “What about when you get close to being elected? You could still start to betray us and might still win anyway!”

“This is true,” agreed senator McCain, “But I might well not be able to get enough conservative turnout to win the presidency!”

“Alright then…how do we know you wont just wait till you get elected and then betray us?” said the conservatives.

“Ahh…,” crooned senator McCain, “Because you see, once you’ve helped to make me president, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with betrayal, now would it?”

So the conservatives agreed to take help senator McCain get elected president. He edged out Barak Obama in a nail-bitting race and was inaugurated in January of the year 2009. Now president McCain immediately got a democratic majority in congress to enact full amnesty for all illegals in the United States and all of their relatives. He also nominated Hillary Clinton to the U.S. Supreme court along with Senator Teddy Kennedy’s wife. Both were confirmed.

.

“You fool!” croaked the conservatives, “You have betrayed us and you will never get a second term. Why on earth did you do that?”

Now president McCain shrugged and snickered and did a little jig..

“I could not help myself. It is my nature.”

In a scheduled talk to members of an independent think tank Sunday, March 30 in New Orleans, LA, the Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright revealed
background details of some of his past sermons that had aroused considerable national controversy in recent weeks. Reverend Wright’s latest assertions seem certain to once again place presidential candidate Barack Obama squarely in the middle of a new firestorm of criticism.
“As the most politically astute of my flock, of course Barack would be the one to whom I would turn when composing a sermon that addresses our national condition,” Reverend Wright allegedly asserted in his remarks to an audience of over 200 members of Americans for a Better Way. “The child is truly father to the man.”

Is that a fact?

do you have any examples to back up anything you say about mccain??

list the conservative policies/bills he has sponsored/passed.

Well I was lucky, I raised my kids in the neighborhood I was raised in. Everybody knew everybody and we looked out for each other. They were still able to do all those things that you mentioned and play hide-n-seek after dark. And even though I don’t live there now we will be having a Labor Day Cook out with live music, played by my kids and others. I still don’t see any reason for your and MB4 to be so fatalistic.

Hey MB_ we didn’t have no damn 155’s.
The RVN had 105’s. We didn’t work with them very much.

Got rolled out of a “duce and a half” once by an 81mm round placed in a culvert and detonated remotely like an IED.

The biggest things we had in camp were 81’s and 57mmRR’s. Had “buckshot canisters” for the 57’s!

Oh MY!

They shipped us a 4.2 inch tube once but; never sent any ammo?

The main problem was we weren’t issued any hearing protection from 1962 until late 1964. We rolled up “asse wipe” and stuck it in our ears, not to good, got wet, fell out, etc.

We spent way to much quality time in very close proximity to small arms fire, grenade and mortar detonations.

The long term success? Are you suggesting that electing Obama is part of a plan for long term success?

Mormon Doc on August 17, 2008 at 8:44 PM

Most neutral observers think Obama won last night, Chuck.

Were you fooled by McCain’s phony bible thumper act?

Poor you…

alphie on August 17, 2008 at 8:36 PM

I checked out Dkos yesterday and saw, well, things like -

It was because McCain was simplistic.

It was because McCain was dealing in sound bites.

It was because McCain was playing to his base.

It was because McCain must have known about the questions in advance.

It was because they charged so much for the tickets and just had wealthy people in the audience.

They would not have said so many thing like that if they had not thought that McCain did much better than Obama.

What, you think that 8 years of Obama will turn out somehow bad for America?

Why on earth do you think that?????

I still don’t see any reason for your and MB4 to be so fatalistic.

Cindy Munford on August 17, 2008 at 8:41 PM

you’re very lucky. those places are disappearing.

I’m not fatalistic, just realistic. too much risk of a child being snatched these days. the country is obviously worse than when I grew up. it grows more socialist by the year….reagan didn’t reverse it, no one has, and I think we’ll have to collapse to finally convince people that the government can’t take of them, can’t play god.

we are going the way of europe…our roadmap is right before our eyes…and the dems want to take us there fast as they can…the republicans only a little slower….

not a great reason for optimism…in the short term…in the long term..I am very optimistic because I’ve read the back of the BOOK, and I KNOW Who wins….

right4life on August 17, 2008 at 8:46 PM

Thanks, wise_man, Bishop and Mormon Doc, I am falling back for a better position (dinner). MB4 and right4life, good luck, in is not in my nature to be so pessimistic so y’all enjoy.

Got a link?

And you really can whine with a straight face about the debt and support Obama? Go read up on his plans. Balancing the budget sure as hell isn’t one of them. Last estimate I saw was 30x the annual spending increases over McCain.

right4life & MB4

Just wanted to say that I am glad to read your posts in this thread. Makes me feel less alone in my disgust of McCain. Too many people here want to play the same game for years on end: pragmatism. While liberals/progressives continue to make headway in the American public by staying true to liberal/progressive ideals, so called conservatives continue to say we must be ‘pragmatic’ and accept liberal Republicans instead of conservatives. Meanwhile, the country and the government move leftward. Brilliant.

As someone mentioned in the earlier Obama thread, the GOP and conservatives have a bad habit of trying to defeat people, instead of defeat ideologies. Instead of standing up for the conservative ideology and explaining why it is best, the GOP and conservatives continue to sacrifice their principles and attack people and let socialism and liberalism and Marxism live on. Because of this, liberals simply wait to find someone who can present the message of liberalism/socialism/Marxism in a nice-sounding way to the American public. Now, instead of defeating the ideology, once again the GOP and conservatives are trying to defeat the person, Obama. Even if Obama is defeated, McCain is still a socialist/liberal espousing liberal/socialist policies, pretending he is a ‘conservative’.

From where I stand, conservatism in America is dead, because conservatives have chosen ‘pragmatism’ over standing up for conservative principles, while the Left continues to stand by its liberal principles and continues to move the ‘center’ more and more to the Left. Thus, the entire country is moving Left. This is what ‘pragmatism’ has gotten us. Brilliant.

Mormon Doc on August 17, 2008 at 8:47 PM

I didn’t refer to any base. That was them making the reference. So you would have to ask them. I suppose they meant Republicans or evangelicals or wealthy people?

MB4 on August 17, 2008 at 8:55 PM

Republicans really shouldn’t talk about the size of government after the last 8 years, chuck.

Really…you’ll only embarrass yourself.

Well Im not a Republican nor do I support the spending increases over the past 7 years.

The 8th year of course will be completely run by a Democrat house, and the deficit will be more that double that of the last fiscal year run by Republicans. Next year is projected to be the worst of all history.

Can’t blame Republicans anymore, sport.

One of the reasons I liked this site was because the anti-McCain, he’s not conservative enough nuts(actually Dems or Liberterians most of the time)seldom came here and were not missed. But I see they are here, however ineffectual and illogical their ranting. Too bad, it was nice without them.

alphie on August 17, 2008 at 9:01 PM

But Harry and Nancy had other plans for your money. They are the final word on budgets and spending. Once they came in, legally, Bush’s budgets don’t even have to be looked at anymore. President has no power over budgets once his party lost Congress.

This year’s deficit will be over double last year. Next year’s is expected to close in on half a TRILLION.

You guys are in charge now. Won’t have any Bush to blame no mo’ sport.

don’t worry, I won’t hold my breath for any ‘logic’ from you….
