“Instead of giving big speeches at big stadiums, he needs to give straight-up 10-word answers to people at Wal-Mart about how he would improve their lives.”

I remember when George H. W. was filmed going through the check out line at a grocery store and was fascinated by the UPC code scanner. That was one of the nails in his electoral coffin.

Does Wal Mart sell arugula ?

JonRoss on August 16, 2008 at 10:12 PM

Or, in the blunter words of Gov. Phil Bredesen, Democrat of Tennessee: “Instead of giving big speeches at big stadiums, he needs to give straight-up 10-word answers to people at Wal-Mart about how he would improve their lives.”

Presidents can seldom really do much to significantly improve the lives of large numbers of people, the can do things to make them significantly worse however.

MB4 on August 16, 2008 at 10:16 PM

I love the headline in the link “Allies ask Obama to be more specific about Hope”. Yeap, that would be helpful, or maybe not.

JonRoss on August 16, 2008 at 10:17 PM

JonRoss on August 16, 2008 at 10:12 PM

I dunno. Is arugula produced in China?

MB4 on August 16, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Phil Bredesen is my governor and I hate to say it but he has been as good or better for the state of TN than some of the more recent Republicans. He would make a good president. McCain ought to interview him for veep.

Obama spoke in warmed over drivel that channels Saul Alinsky, and does not change anyone’s life for the better.

Lower prices at Wal-Mart drive liberals crazy, since they do not get a piece of the action in union dues

Over on Tapper’s ABC blog, McCain is winning the day by far. Even some of the liberals have admitted that he handed Obama his buttocks.

Buford Gooch on August 16, 2008 at 10:26 PM

The more I think about it the more bizarre it sounds. What the devil IS Hussien’s pay grade ? That response needs to be woven through the McCain campaign attack ads somehow.

JonRoss on August 16, 2008 at 10:27 PM

What’s with all this Wal-Mart shoppin’
And skeptics like Strickland and Bredesen contemplatin’
How my campaign they’d like to start rearrangin’

When that’s not what anyone really should do
When heaven has found you
Can’t you see
That it’s all wrapped up in the Messiah that’s me
So follow me

Come on, voters
Follow me
I’m Obama the Piper
And I’ll show you where Hope and Change is at
Come on, voters
Can’t you see
I’m Obama the Piper
Trust in me

Voters
Don’t be scared to into the White House to help me move
Hey, voters
What do you think I’m tryin’ to prove
It ain’t true
That my Hope and Change has got nothin’ in it for you
It’s just in your mind
And that’s all that’s trickin’ you
So step in line

Come on, voters
Follow me
Come on, voters
Trust in me
Come on, voters
Can’t you see
Come on, voters
Follow me

You know I am just about sick of these people who blame the fact that not everyone is enamored with their candidate is scared because he looks different. Different then who? Are these people under the impression that there is anyone in the U.S. who hasn’t seen a black person? It is just about the stupidest argument going.

Cindy Munford on August 16, 2008 at 10:59 PM

Wow… so now his allies are telling him exactly what we’ve been saying throughout the entire campaign?

“It’s fine to tell people about hope and change, but you have to have plenty of concrete, pragmatic ideas that bring hope and change to life.”

I believe that’s a paraphrase of something I’ve literally said dozens of times.

I don’t think Obama’s 10-word answer (”I’m raising your taxes and driving Wal-Mart out of business.”) will work.

Dr. Charles G. Waugh on August 17, 2008 at 12:30 AM

How about this for a Quote of the day:

“Any new US assets in Europe could come under Russian nuclear attack”

- or -

“She persuaded Saakashvili to accept clarifications to the ceasefire accord which contradict Washington’s spirited assurances for Georgia’s ‘territorial integrity’”

August 16, 2008, 5:34 PM (GMT+02:00)

DEBKA -

Russia’s deputy chief of staff Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn warned Poland it was “exposing itself to a strike 100 percent.”
He said any new US assets in Europe could come under Russian nuclear attack. Russian forces would target “the allies of countries having nuclear weapons” to destroy them “as a first priority,” said Gen. Nogovitsyn.

US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice persuaded Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili to sign on the dotted line Friday night.
In five hours of arm-twisting, she persuaded Saakashvili to accept clarifications to the ceasefire accord which contradict Washington’s spirited assurances for Georgia’s “territorial integrity.”

August 16, 2008

AS the Russian Dark Lord’s shadow falls across the shires of freedom once again, the response from the West has been confused, belated and inadequate: fear eclipsed courage; ignorance masqueraded as wisdom; and, in “Old Europe,” greed vanquished justice.

Russia won. Diplomacy failed. No state or alliance will reverse the decision. When President Bush spoke out strongly on Friday, Moscow ignored him: Words mean nothing to Prime Minister Putin, a man who regards all compromise as weakness.

Putin is sending an unmistakable message to all other independent states that once belonged to Moscow’s empire: Russia will not tolerate true democracies or Western orientations on its “eternal property.”

MsUnderestimated on August 17, 2008 at 12:57 AM

Barry couldn’t even give a succinct answer to a 7 year about why he wanted to be President. 10 words to a WalMart shopper? He’d pull a brain muscle.

Obama’s an interesting study. It almost seems like he’s playing the role of a Presidential candidate instead of actually being one.

I mean, Bill Clinton was a slick politician, but he had a record as Governor. The entire Obama campaign is like a practical joke on America.

Mr. Wednesday Night on August 17, 2008 at 4:58 AM

I thought he had been drilling those 10-word since the beginning?

Rich is defined as anybody (or family, I’m not sure which) making 250k or more.

I have a very silly question: Why do people want the president of the United States to imrove their lives? I thought it was the job of the POTUS as CEO to run the country, keep it safe and free. I dont want Obama or any other corrupt politician including McCain “improving” that is, running my life and making my choices for me. I’m perfectly capable of screwing up my own life with no help from the government, thank you very much. Am I in the minority in that view?
But I guess there are lots of people in this country who are craving a nanny state. After all, if govenment takes responsibility for you then you wont have to be held accountable when things screw up, and things will screw up.

This deserves repeating. The role of the POTUS should be really simple. Preserving, protecting and defending the constitution from enemies both foreign and domestic. That should be the extent of it. Beyond that the POTUS needs to leave me the hell alone.

JonRoss on August 17, 2008 at 8:54 AM

Here is the actual prescribed oath. Washington added “so help me god” at the end when he took the oath. Something tells me that Hussien would choke on these words.

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
