Open thread: McCain and Obama at the Saddleback forum

8 p.m. ET on CNN and MSNBC. Obama gets the first hour, then Maverick. Tune in at 8:55 or so at least for the body language as their paths cross onstage.

I share the boss’s disdain for this grand pander so I won’t be watching, but we’ll have video later if anything interesting gets said. Which isn’t as unlikely as she suggests, actually: Warren has promised to “deal with their personal life,” which in the case of his “amazing” friend Barry should mean at least one question about Rev. Wright and in McCain’s case should mean you know what. Note to Maverick: Be sure to mention John Edwards, seeing as he was thoughtful enough in his ABC mea culpa to mention you. Or better yet, since Warren’s so concerned about character, ask him what conclusion we should draw about the character of an American who travels overseas for photo ops with terrorist cretins responsible for funneling suicide bombers into Iraq to kill American soldiers.

As always, if you see or hear anything worth clipping while you watch, tips are very much welcome.

This country was founded on Judeo-Christian values.

Superb

Guardian on August 16, 2008 at 9:53 PM

Other than chiding Congress to come back to work on energy, MCCain said nothing negative about Democrats. Not one word that I recall. Correct me if I’m wrong.

No not really. It really wasn’t that kind of forum. Obama didn’t really say negative things about Republicans. At one point he even gave President Bush credit for something.

There he goes, pandering to those crazy Christians.

salmonczar on August 16, 2008 at 9:55 PM

no i-i-i no flowery words, just BAM

I was for him before because he was the best in option. Now I’m for him for him.

Not just this question, but this whole thing has won me over.

I don’t think this is the right place for attacking the Dems. This was to show who he is and what he stands for, and he did an excellent job.

He didn’t really have a choice. Warren asked about Bush’s AIDS program.

Can’t wait to see how CNN’s commentators are going to spin this.

flyawaybird on August 16, 2008 at 9:56 PM

Well, reading this thread has changed my mind about this forum and now I’m looking forward to watching the repeat of McCain’s hour. I’m so glad to read that he answered abortion, embryonic stem cell, and the evil quesiton well (according to posters here).

Why is every Repub candidate so hot for “reaching across the aisle” to get Demo support? Hows about the most ethical party ever getting off thier asses and reaching out to conservatives once in a while?

Texan on August 16, 2008 at 9:52 PM

Agreed. The Republicans had the House and the Senate and the Presidency, and look how much they accomplished compared to the opportunities squandered.

Reach-around is more like it.

hillbillyjim on August 16, 2008 at 9:56 PM

How did Barry ever agree to do this? He had to know he was going to get hammered.

hillbillyjim on August 16, 2008 at 9:59 PM

Dude, Obama just shows he doesnt believe in anything. McCain dominated. I am not sure weather he will lead like what he said. However he smoked Obama. Obama is a typical post-modern, emerging type of person – never can have a concrete opionon about anything.
Go McCain. He won me over tonight.

flash044 on August 16, 2008 at 10:00 PM

Obama = “More Nuanced”

…well, that’s one way of putting it.

flyawaybird on August 16, 2008 at 10:01 PM

Do they play overtime in preseason?

Yeah, I didn’t know either, but they went OT the other night–can’t recall which game at the moment.

hillbillyjim on August 16, 2008 at 10:01 PM

My biggest quibble with him, believe it or not, was the commment on millions for studying bear DNA. The US spending money on something like that sounds silly until you spend about ten seconds thinking about it. Bears, in many states, are game animals, thus good management of them means healthy populations, so more licenses can be sold, and more money is brought into government coffers. Furthermore, people go to places like Yellowstone or the Great Smokeys hoping to see bears. Thus, bears can and do have positive economic impact. And yes, there is the other side of the ledger, they can kill livestock and there have been three bear maulings in Anchorage recently. Thus, Ursids can and do have a negative economic impact. The point is, bears affect humans in ways good and bad, so why not spend money to understand their biology well?

radjah shelduck on August 16, 2008 at 9:49 PM

And a DNA study will affect this in a way worth millions of dollars?

A recent study of bear maulings found that radio waves from scientific instruments were making young males aggressive. DNA studies would not have addressed the root cause here.

I think McCain had the right bias toward not spending our money on these studies. These studies only have very minor benefit and huge costs, IMO. Of course, I just carry powerful firearms when I go where there are bears, so I’m not worried about making good medicines for bears.

In Wisconsin, there is a chronic wasting disease in deer, and the state funds research on the disease. However, they have limits on what they will spend based on scientific evaluations of what will be cost effective. Get a congressman wanting to bring home dollars to his district, and the cost side is not considered.

Right_of_Attila on August 16, 2008 at 10:02 PM

flash044 — Obama is a typical post-modern, emerging type of person

I think Sen. Obama was gingerly trying to demonstrate that he’s a Christian, he’s a religious vs. cultural Christian, and that he’s a nice guy the audience should like. That didn’t come across nearly as powerful and informative as Sen. McCain’s answers.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this event because it seemed so focused on the evangelical audience. Plus, I was annoyed that Sen. Obama was ducking direct interaction with Sen. McCain. However, Charles Krauthammer was completely right. It was a controlled experiment, and Mr. Warren did a decent job of asking some simple, good questions in a pleasant manner. It turned into a good chance to see the candidates in action.

Both did well, McCain did better. Obama stating that “it was above his pay grade” can be cut to be pretty good attack ad. He is running for the highest office and part of that job includes appointing judges who do make those decisions. As commander and chief, he will make life and death decisions. If he is uncomfortable making those decisions, he should just quit. Also, alot of “ums” and “errs” from the great speaker, no teleprompter.
