Head fake: Will Obama name Hillary VP?

A sensational theory, but more so for the theater of it than the logic. Imagine: They roll into the convention with no VP named yet and then, with the suspense unbearable, after months of sick-making sturm and drang about “healing” and “unity” and “catharsis,” Barry O concludes his acceptance speech by introducing Lady Macbeth as his number two. The shock would be such that you might actually feel it beneath your feet; the media frenzy afterwards would swallow the GOP convention whole. It’d be the biggest VP bombshell since … ever.
But why would he do it? Ruffini dismisses the big six on Obama’s short list for different reasons but he’s only persuasive about Sebelius and Dodd. Yes, the nutroots hate Evan Bayh; so what? They’re not staying home. Yes, some of Wes Clark’s comments would get scrutiny; so what? His military credentials are worth it. Ditto for Biden, whose loose cannon tendencies would be buried by the media under an avalanche of tributes to his experience. In any case, the issue isn’t whether each of them has liabilities, it’s whether their liabilities are bigger than Hillary’s. Picking her would indicate that Obama thinks he has a bigger problem with Democrats than with independents and needs to purchase “unity” even at the expense of alienating centrists and handing McCain a gift-wrapped GOTV angle. Does he? He’s already crushing Maverick among Latinos and has led by 19 points among women so she doesn’t do much for him there. Unless I missed something, most major unions are already committed to him, too. Is the sore-loser PUMA contingent really so huge within the party that he genuinely fears it’s going to cost him the election? McCain does do better with Democrats in some polls than Obama does with Republicans, but not any better thus far than Bush did in 2004. Which is to say, if The One has a problem with his own side, it might not be a problem that Hillary can fix. And then of course there’s the minor issue of actually having to govern with her and Bill if he wins. If he was 10 points down right now and needed a Hail Mary, I can see why he might be willing to risk that. But with the race tied, and not knowing what adding a Clinton to the ticket would do for McCain’s support? No way.
If he is leaning in this direction, though, it must be a recent move: Bill’s whine-tasting session with ABC was just two weeks ago, and I can’t believe he’d be yammering about having been misunderstood and unloading on people after the election’s over if he thought she was lined up to be on the ticket. Exit question: On a scale of one to 10, how likely is this? (Exit answer: Two!)
Update: Headlines comments imported.
Update: Make that three on a scale of one to 10: Wes Clark apparently isn’t attending the convention.
Update: Also, if this really is a head fake, why would Obama and Hillary go to the trouble of placing her name in nomination? Is that part of the head fake too, to mislead people into thinking the roll call of delegates is her big moment at the convention when secretly it’ll be the VP announcement? Seems like a long way to go for a ruse, especially when not placing her in nomination — which would be perceived initially as a snub — and then announcing her as VP would be arguably more shocking.

Gotta agree. Hillary is Obama’s best bet.

Still sayin’

Could be. The Clintons are getting half the convention to themselves, so why not? It makes sense to the extent Obama is worried about all those Clinton defectors not voting Democrat.

I noticed Fred Thompson had “I hope John doesn’t pick a moderate like Charlie” on his facebook the other day.
Back to the topic, Clinton as VP would surprise whom?

Here in Columbus (OH), they have been putting up big Vote Obama posters everywhere (wrapping them around lightpoles so all you can see are two letters and Obama’s ear and part of an eye at a time forcing you to you walk in a circle around the pole like a fool o get the full message. I digress.) Anyway, these posters are inviting college kids to get a text message on who the vp pick is. Why would they go through all the trouble of an instant simultaneous announcement just to notify the world of someone the vast majority of people will have no recognition of, like Bayh? This theory sounds plausible.

I was hoping he is not smart enough to pick Hillary or that Michelle Obama hates Hillary enough to put a stop to it.
My heart sank when I heard Bill Clinton was speaking on Nomination night because he is the best person to introduce Hillary if she is to be the VP.
This is the only way Obama can win and it makes me afeared.
EJDolbow on August 16, 2008 at 11:07 AM
There is no way those four egos could work together. Bubba is a loose cannon, and Hillary cannot be trusted. Michelle would want to be queen bee.
Wethal on August 16, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Nah. Hill’s arguably one of the most hated politicians in America. While her supporters might be mollified, thereby reducing some of the internal strife in the party, I don’t think she would bring one new vote to the ticket.
RushBaby on August 16, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Everyone “knows” who Osama Obama will pick. This sort of speculation-presented-as-fact happens every four years.
Personally, I think The Hildebeest has one more hand grenade under her flak jacket and will detonate it just before or during the convention.
A Clinton does not go down quietly to defeat. They always have slime held in reserve.
MrScribbler on August 16, 2008 at 11:18 AM
I really can’t believe that Medusa has given up on 2012. If she takes the VP slot, she’s finished in 2012.
OldEnglish on August 16, 2008 at 11:18 AM
I know some older, habitual Dems, who would feel comforted with a familiar name on the ticket. Their discomfit with Obama would be mollified by what would amount to a vetting of him by a known quantity, and absolve them of the responsibility of making an informed decision for themselves. (Oddly, these same people would vote for McCain, if he ran as a democrat).
It’s all anecodotal, but these are people whose views are primarily formed by the MSM. In any event, I suppose it would make McCain run much farther to the right.
JiangxiDad on August 16, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Obama would b eincredibly stupid to pick Hillary as VP. Assuming he wins at all (a big if), she’d undermine him at every opportunity and her loyalists would find (or make) some scandal to take him out of the office ASAP after the inauguration. And that is the best Obama can expect from Hillary.
She wants to be President. And Her Majesty ALWAYS gets her way in the end.
inviolet on August 16, 2008 at 11:25 AM
If Obama does pick her, I wonder who will have the shortest presidency, he or Harrison?
Kafir on August 16, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Again, why in the world would Hillary ever accept it? Right now has a very high profile as the new liberal lioness of the Senate. She can get on TV any time she wants and push her own agenda. Why would she take a job where she will rot? Why would she take a job where she had to ask for permission to speak in public and push his agenda?
She needs Obama to lose to have any shot at ever being President herself, so why would she help him win? Why would she help a guy who just broke his promise to her to help her payoff her campaign debt? A
nything is possible but this one has a few low probability.
TheBigOldDog on August 16, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Yes, this all makes perfect sense from Obama’s side. I think you could make the argument that he can’t win without her. And this last week of visiting his grandma (for one hour? Without his girls? WTF?) etc while McCain has actually looked like a credible POTUS has been a disaster.
It makes zero sense from Hillary’s side though. I don’t have negative feelings toward her, and I simply can’t imagine why one earth she would even consider it.
OK, it only makes sense if she really is the dedicated Alinsky revolution soldier that some fear she is. But even with that, she’s willing to be the VP nominee to a moron like Obama? She wants to go around rationalizing his relationships with William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn for the next 2.5 months of her life?
You couldn’t pay me enough, or offer me enough power.
funky chicken on August 16, 2008 at 11:31 AM
big old dog LOL we’re gonna be crying in our beers if Ruffini is right. I’m still pretty confident he’s wrong. The guy is kinda hysterical at times.
funky chicken on August 16, 2008 at 11:32 AM
True, but that wouldn’t stop them from what (in the far, far recesses of my mind only) could be the biggest and most fraudulent “triangulation” in American history.
Connie on August 16, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Why would she? Because 4 years from now, my generation (hers) will be on its way out and it’s now or never? Because it would be for the “common good” of the party?
Connie on August 16, 2008 at 11:42 AM
It makes sense. Democrats are not logical people, so yes, Ms. Rodham is a very good possibility as VP. Who else would “energize” the ticket (in the Dem’s dim eyes) than her?
Halley on August 16, 2008 at 11:44 AM
If McCain wins, she has a shot at being President in 4 years. McCain is only going to serve one term. As VP she would rot. In the Senate, she’s the successor to Ted Kennedy, one of the most powerful woman on Earth while she waits for another shot at the Presidency.
TheBigOldDog on August 16, 2008 at 11:44 AM
It’s possible, but I think this country has had its fill of the Clintons. And, when you stop to think of the young morons who are supporting Obama because he’s cute and has a sexy voice, you must consider that 4 years from now there will be twice as many morons who have the same outlook. It is not a good thing that 50 is the new 30. Americans really are getting dumber.
Connie on August 16, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Makes perfect sense. Obama would get the title-which is all he wants ’cause he sure can’t govern-and Clinton will get the power which she craves.

With all due respect, how would you know? Also, what does like have to do with power? Did Kennedy like Johnson?
JiangxiDad on August 16, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Senate Majority Leader is a hell of a lot cooler job than VP. And does anybody here think that Harry Reid has a lock on that job? I think Hillary could depose old Harry real easy.
If you hate her, you could see her bypassing normal human psychology to be one person away from the Oval Office. If she accepts, I’ll have to consider that the CDS Hillary haters may be right about her. But if you just look at it objectively, there simply is no good justification for her to accept the job. The Obama campaign went around and repeatedly smeared her and Bill as racists.
Now, Bush’s supporters actually said much worse about McCain in South Carolina in 2000, and McCain forgave Bush and Rove….politics is a dirty nasty game that I would never play. So perhaps Hill and Bill are willing to sign on to the Obama debacle to try, for the good of the Democrat party, to keep the ship from going down.
I just think the Clintons are too smart to think Obama is electable even with Hillary on the ticket.
funky chicken on August 16, 2008 at 12:24 PM
You are right I don’t really know. But each of them has done the very least to help each other out. Also, Obama just spent months saying we need change and Clinton is not it. Clinton spent the primary saying he is not ready to lead. Yeah, that would make an excellent ticket!!! You’ve gotta be kidding me.
terryannonline on August 16, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Hillary Clinton floated to the speaker’s stand as her head spun 360 degrees on her shoulders! As a shocked world watched in horror she let loose an other worldly cackle as the convention hall doors slammed shut, the Obama Super Delegates were lifted 30 feet into the air as their hearts were ripped out of their chests and stuffed up theirs butts. As they fell back to the convention floor Hillary hissed “Let’s vote”! It was unanimous! Hillary Clinton is now the nominee of her party!

Connie on August 16, 2008 at 12:36 PM
This is my general impression too, based on nothing but what I’ve observed in the public sphere.
However… there is the matter of Hillary’s campaign debt. Would she cut a second-banana deal for $13 million or however much it is? Can we be certain that Hillary is up to running again in 2012? Maybe the rigors of campaigning are not so attractive to her any longer, having done it 3 times now (2 Bills 1 Hill).
Much as I hope it doesn’t happen I may have to bow to Ruffini’s superior knowledge here. If he thinks it’s possible, it’s for good reason.
Michelle Obama may be the deciding factor here. Is she willing to be upstaged as First Black Lady by First Woman VP? (Sorry for the identity-politics adjectives but this really is how the Dems see it.)
If Obama is desperate enough to pick Hillary at least we’ll know that his internal polling indicators are dismal.
Gilda on August 16, 2008 at 12:41 PM
2012 would appear to be Hillary’s last shot. In 2016, she’ll be 68. Sorry, but she’ll look it, unless she gets work done (and then risks looking like deer-in-headlights Pelosi). (She has to have some appeal to the under-40 crowd that won’t remember the “good old Clinton days.”) She can easily run on an “I told you so,” platform in 2012, if Obama loses.
But in 2016, Obama’s VP would be the presumptive nominee. Obama would want his “legacy” to continue. She ran in part on the “good old Clinton days of the Nineties,” but so much will have happened in sixteen years that that argument won’t go far. If she really still wants to be president, she’ll hope McCain wins and go for 2012.
Wethal on August 16, 2008 at 1:07 PM
If the Messiah picks Hillary and gets himself elected – he’ll surely make a visit to the One Hour Fosterizing store.

Politics makes strange bedfellows as the old saying goes, but there are too many hurdles Hussien and Hillary would have to overcome. There is no reason not to believe that the Clinton’s despise Hussien. Bill gets red faced everytime a camera is stuck in his face and questions are asked. And as someone else has mentioned here, Michelle Hussien will not tolerate any outside influence, and Hillary and Bill are nothing but a load of influence.
The tensions of a three month campaign with Bill swaggering around the country will have the four of them ready to slash throats before election day. And if elected the Clintons will make Jefferson’s back stabbing of John Adams seem like child’s play. However it may be good for the country because there will be so much infighting between the Donk party factions that they will never get anything done in Congress.
JonRoss on August 16, 2008 at 4:27 PM
From the outside, and from the inside, she doesn’t want him to win. She simply can’t. She has to run again in 2012.
Entelechy on August 16, 2008 at 4:28 PM
The Obama campaign floated Chuck Hagel’s name. And even pathetic Chuck had to come out and deliver the public slap down.
Then they floated a Colin Powell prime time endorsement speech. Powell’s spokespeople had to deliver the public smack down.
I don’t think Hillary wants to have her name on all those bumper stickers. The association with Edwards would be a killer.
funky chicken on August 16, 2008 at 4:33 PM
I think Obama is desperate enough to be begging her to accept a VP slot. And privately pledging to pay off her campaign debt. Thus the sudden change in the convention schedule to allow all those prime time speeches by Clintons. I still don’t think she’ll accept the offer.

It would rock the world if he picked Hillary. For a moment.
It would unite the party, but lets get real, they are voting for him no matter what. So the question would be that mushy middle that decides elections. They will not want another Clinton in what supposed to be “the politics of change.” I think Obama can’t stand her. So there is that.
But, at this point Obama will do ANYTHING he can to win. He will say ANYTHING. So…it could happen.

Yeah, he’ll do whatever to win. He knows he’s in trouble. On her side of the slate, having Michelle O as First Lady will go a long ways towards softening voters opinions on how awful Her Majesty was in that role. She knows how she is presently viewed, and the benefit enhances her chances for 2012. Michelle O’s abrasiveness can be used very creatively by the Clintons.
a capella on August 16, 2008 at 4:52 PM
I don’t know. If Obama picked Hillary, his whole “change” scheme would have to be tossed under the bus. The reason his supporters are as rabid in their support of him is because he’s not a Clinton (or a Bush). His entire campaign, thus far, has been hinged on his promise of something different than the status-quo. This would cancel that promise out.
Conservative_SAHM on August 16, 2008 at 4:53 PM
Hillary will not be the VP.
While Obama frolics in the water (literally and figuratively), the Clintons are slowly and deliberately swimming in an ever tightening circle, until the right moment when she shall seize the nomination from him and relegate the “community organizer” to the list of Democratic also-rans.

Hillary is a very strong pick for Obama. Wouldn’t surprise me at all. This is like a world championship boxing match, everyone on both sides will be getting punch drunk as Nov 4 approaches. The candidates will be reeling. It will be tough. Who better to be on your side than Hillary and Bill. Seriously. What is the quote, “Politics is war conducted by other means”. This is ass-kicking, grind your opponent’s face into the dirt war. Obama and McCain both understand that, as does Hillary. As does Mitt, I believe. That’s why I’m big on Mitt!. I doubt that this would happen.
1. There is way too much bad blood between the two camps and many in both of those camps would take this as either a “betrayal” or a “sell out”.
2. Hillary is not going to play second fiddle to Barak. Not only that she knows he is a disaster in the making and when his shite hits the fan she would rather be on the sidelines saying “I told you so.”.
3. It really wouldn’t get them anything, really. At this point in the game Obama stinks as much as Hillary does.
4. And the most important point…
Hillary was offered the VP spot (or any other position she desired)in that meeting that her and Obama had at Diane Feinstein’s house back in June. She replied with a very terse “thanks but no thanks” with the implied meaning of “stick it where the sun don’t shine, buddy”. Her attitude was described to me by someone who knows what happened there as “it ain’t over”. Why would she now accept the VP slot from Obama now when she is in a position of advantage? She would gain nothing from it and perhaps lose a great deal. This is now about much more then the nomination, this is now about who controls the party.

I think it will be Bayh. But Hillary would be the smart pick. (”It’s the smart move — see ‘The Godfather’”) When Obama is laying down in the dirt like Paul Newman in the ending of the movie ‘Sweet Bird of Youth’, his face stomped on and bloodied, he’ll wish he picked Hillary instead of Bayh.
Paul-Cincy on August 16, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Put Bayh in blackface I swear he’s Obama’s twin. As narcissistic as Obama is, that will appeal to him. Oh, the blackface comment? If someone doesn’t do it within a week of the Obama-Bayh announcement, I’ll be disappointed. Heck, I’ll do it if no one else will. I’ll even learn Photoshop if I have to. I swear they’re twins.

Barry needs a jump start badly. His hope and change M.O. needs refurbishing after the position changes, embarrassment of being caught accepting donations from “old politics” donors he pledged to avoid, and whiffs on foreign policy. He needs a eye opening, publicity grabbing stunt. Hillary would be his best bet,..if she won’t do it, I think he’s toast.

I won’t put anything past a vengeful Clinton.
Which is what makes this so exciting!
Rightwingsparkle on August 16, 2008 at 7:02 PM
Not happening.
The only way the fanciful scenario can be played out is for Barry to go back on his word to all the people he’s suckered in to joining up the Be The First To Know.
He has to name is pick before the convention. And there’s no way Hillary can have her Clinton night at the Convention is she’s the already-known VP selection. She’d completely upstage him.
Not happening.

Another waste of time, it will never happen.

That was good.

Count on it folks! Why else all the face time for the Clintoons. It will be a unititation of the Obamanation. The Dems will swoon, the media will tinkle down its leg and puddle around its feet, Chrissy Matthews will faint, Olberdork will have a heart attack the stars will align, and a great brilliant light will shine down upon Broncos stadium.
Hopefully the light will be followed by thunder, torrential rains and high winds, fire and brimstone.
Bill will be ambassador to the United Nations and the world will unite until they find Obama face down in his bathtub some morning.
The only way this doesn’t happen is if Mccain picks Hillary first, that way they won’t have to work so hard to get rid of the old guy.
Seriously, if this happens as I think it has been set up to McCain will need to pick Palin and run on oil production and family values. This oil production needs to be used and that problem solved.

Stinks of desperation to me.

Paul-Cincy on August 16, 2008 at 8:35 PM
Dude, I’m thinking as long as Lieberman is under serious consideration by McCain, we need to go all the way. Liebs is a flaming lib on everything other than the war, so if the GOP is ok with that, then they should consider McCain needs a women or an African American to round out his ticket even more. So, if liberal democrat is ok, let’s see if AL Sharpton will put his name up in lights with Backdoor John.
McCain/Sharpton 08 ‘We don’t have any values. We just want to win!’
austinnelly on August 16, 2008 at 8:42 PM
Good point Austinnelly or as I have said before just have these two name each other then trade off being pres, and vice pres. Obamanation one month McCain the next>

Now look what you’ve done. It’s going to take an entire roll of paper towels to clean this mess up.

Evidence you could be right: check out the 10 day forecast for Denver. Unseasonably cool except for Thursday when the high should hit 87.

And if you’re interested, look at the high temps forecast for Colorado Springs for the next few days. BRRRRRRRR

No, but Hillary might name Obama her running mate after the “floor vote suprise”.
There’s a reason they’re setting up those holding pens in Denver, it’s not for if the humanoids get restless, it’s for when the left goes nuts when the convention throws the nom to Hillary.
I just have a feeling that alot of those super delegates are starting to realize what more and more of the public is becomming aware of every day: Obama just can’t hack it.
SuperCool on August 17, 2008 at 3:09 AM
Nominating Hillary is a death wish for a Pres Hussein.
leftnomore on August 17, 2008 at 3:38 AM
First off, I haven’t quite counted Clinton out of the nomination yet. She’s got a lot of pull with the party elders. Yanking the nomination out from under him at the convention would lose her the general election- though I doubt she sees it that way.
As for why would she take the VP slot, two reasons come to mind:
1. To my knowledge no VP to date has been female, thus she would get to make history as the first woman to serve as VP.
2. Should Obama have to resign for some reason (what’s that video tape you have there Senator Clinton?) she’ll be in postion to be the first woman to serve as President. That also makes history.
But Clinton isn’t the one I’m really worried about. It is my understanding that the convention can nominate anyone they choose for the ticket, not just candidates that ran campaigns. With the state of the Democrat party and the weakness of both the remaining candidates I fear the superdelegates might settle on someone other than Clinton or Obama in an effort to pacify the candidate loyalists of both sides. There is only one Democrat I can think of that could possibly sweep into the convention and be nominated with any real chance of succeeding in November: Al Gore.
Gore already has the grassroots organization needed to win an election in position with his global warming alarmists, with the righteous indignation factor for having had the presidency “stolen” from him in 2000, and a freshness from not running for president for the better part of the last two years. I think the real threat is waiting for the superdelegates to call on him to come save the day.
Browncoatone on August 17, 2008 at 6:47 AM
Of course it’s a head fake. Hillary is going to be on the ticket one way or another-and so is Barry- and this was decided MONTHS ago. Face it, the dems are running the greatest propaganda campaign ever, effectively keeping McCain out of the mainstream press, with the exception of his gaffes and when Barry’s on vacation. In doing so, they’ve convinced a huge voter block-those that really don’t do their homework and get their voting knowledge through TV and 3 minute sound clips-that Barry’s the Man. Supposedly stringing Hillary along throughout the primaries was a brilliant way of hogging the media spotlight. It’s a done deal, folks. The only question was-who gets the top slot? And now you know the rest of the story…
