Stupid: Atheist group wants to be included in Democrats’ … interfaith service

I’m always at risk of overreacting to stories like this because as an atheist myself I hate the fact that tools like this purport to speak for me. That caveat aside, here’s possibly the single dumbest example of atheist identity politics we’ve seen yet, and we’ve seen some doozies. The sheer efficiency of its loathsomeness is amazing: In one fell swoop it reduces skepticism to a quasi-faith, trades “free thinking” for a pathetic need to feel “included,” and of course embraces the hallmark prostrate grievance posture of the victimized group. I’m not surprised that Dawkins sits on their Advisory Board, but to know that Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Salman Rushdie do too is depressing.
The chief executive officer of the Democratic National Convention Committee, the Rev. Leah Daughtry, has planned an interfaith gathering as the opening event of the Democratic National Convention on August 24, 2008. While it is designed to showcase the “diversity” and “shared values” of the party and achieve a “spirit of unity,” it will, in fact, marginalize those Democrats who do not practice religion…
Tens of millions of American voters are nontheists with no god belief, and millions more who practice some religion bring secular values to their political choices. Based as it is on the premise that all values are necessarily derived from religion, this year’s Democratic convention leaves atheists, agnostics, humanists and other secular voters feeling increasingly isolated and voiceless. By accepting Brown’s offer, the Democratic Party can signal to this constituency that it is serious about being inclusive and tolerant.
In other words, celebrating your religion is “marginalizing” to people who choose not to celebrate religion. Or, as one independent-minded skeptic now reveling in the comfort of faux-discrimination put it, “By reaching out to people of faith, they have shown the back of their hand to those who do not believe.” Exit question one: By that logic, does reaching out to gays or blacks constitute showing the back of one’s hand to straights and whites? And exit question two: Allahpundit, self-hating atheist?

stupid is is what stupid does. why would you expect intelligence from people who can not grasp the concept of a higher power?

Well the comments section is off to a good start.
BadgerHawk on August 15, 2008 at 9:08 PM
I just look at this as proof that the leaders of the atheist movement are no more intelligent than the leaders of any other movement, despite what they might think of themselves. I’m not necessarily saying this about you AP, but it is a known fact that a great many atheists believe that their position is the “educated” one.
jimmy the notable on August 15, 2008 at 9:08 PM
Heretic.
Or atheist neocon?
It is interesting, for me, that some of the leading atheists can be as obnoxious and reactionary as the most doctrinaire believer. Richard Dawkins is a boor. So can Hitchens be on occasion.
If there’s an innate drive/source (as some evolutionary pyschologists argue) to believe in religion – or something greater than oneself – can this not manifest itself among secularists? Obviously, in a different way.
But just as militantly?

but it is a known fact that a great many atheists believe that their position is the “educated” one.
jimmy the notable on August 15, 2008 at 9:08 PM
And they would be wrong. The educated position is WE DON’T KNOW. I have no idea if their is or isn’t a God. I believe there is but I DO NOT KNOW. anyone that says they do is full of crap. I choose to believe because of things I have seen, have experienced, have read, and thought about. But I DO NOT KNOW.
Aethists that want to be included in a relgious service needs to find religion first.
unseen on August 15, 2008 at 9:15 PM
I suppose that those who blindly accept a higher power with no evidence are thus the educated, huh? Sorry – but in the real world, if anyone demanded you accept Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Bigfoot or Space Aliens without any objective proof, those who did would be outcast as ignorant fools or conspiracy theorists. Yet, the whole premise of Christianity is that God MUST be accepted on faith with no proof. And we’re the uneducated? I think not.

It’s a very tricky path the dems choose. The whole PC culture in this country has become pathetic, and the dems, by claiming to cater to all the minorities, will always manage to piss someone off.

You can’t prove that God doesn’t exist, but you believe he doesn’t for lack of readily available evidence. Is your position based any less on faith than believers? Not in my opinion.

Big Bad John on August 15, 2008 at 9:18 PM
further I take it from your reply that you know for a FACT that GOD does not exist and are prepared to prove it without a doubt. since it is impossible to prove you are just as wrong as those that stand up and say beyond a doubt that there is a God. Niether can prove their claims and thus they are both wrong to state that there is or isn’t.
An educated man will see both sides of the arguement and understand how both sides maybe right and except the reasons why both think the way they do and then make a decsion on the most likely outcome while all the while admitting that he may be wrong because the evidence does not support his view with 100% certainity. Once the educated man can do that, he enters the realm of faith. Until then he walks in the realm of fantasy and religions fanticism.

when did you learn to read. I have stated you can not prove God exists nor can you prove he doesn’t. what part of that do you not understand?
unseen on August 15, 2008 at 9:30 PM
Of course a rational man might say you are asserting the existing of something for which I see no evidence. Show me verifiable evidence of its existence and I will accept it.
Stephen Macklin on August 15, 2008 at 9:30 PM
Why should we have to prove something DOESN’T exist when there is no evidence that it does?
Circling back to the original post, I think the Atheists trying to get involved in the “interfaith service” are completely ridiculous, and agree with Allah on this one. Most atheists today are hamstrung by having NO morals because they lack an objective philosophical foundation.
Big Bad John on August 15, 2008 at 9:30 PM

As a wise guy said:
“Man would rather have the Void for a purpose than be void of purpose.”
profitsbeard on August 15, 2008 at 9:32 PM
But that’s the problem. In religion, God isn’t asking you to prove he exists and then just worship him because of that. That’s lazy. That’s not the point of faith. The idea that his existence is unprovable is what makes faith that much more impressive. Again, I say this as an agnostic.
jimmy the notable on August 15, 2008 at 9:32 PM
I’ve seen Santa Claus and I’ve even seen him perform miracles. Of course you might have missed out on the miracles do to your lack of faith. Santa knows when you’ve been naughty.
God on the other hand has remained invisible no matter how much I searched.
abrown28 on August 15, 2008 at 9:33 PM
Which is why it’s called faith. Because you have to have faith.
amerpundit on August 15, 2008 at 9:33 PM
Do you realize asking for verifiable proof that people of faith call supernatural? Do you need a definition of supernatural?
terryannonline on August 15, 2008 at 9:33 PM
Big Bad John on August 15, 2008 at 9:30 PM
If there was no evidence for God than billions of people would not continue to believe in Him. Just like Santa Claus is grown out of by age 10, God would be also if people did not find enough evidence to continue to believe.
unseen on August 15, 2008 at 9:33 PM
That’s an idiotic statement. The reason to believe in God, for a religious person, is that his existence is unprovable. That makes faith something profound. There’s nothing profound about looking out, seeing nothing, and declaring that that means that nothing is there.
jimmy the notable on August 15, 2008 at 9:34 PM

I know. That’s why I think its stupid for Christians to try and prove God exists. I think they try to do that because they see atheists attacking them at every turn, and as human nature dictates, they react. Not everyone is a saint.
jimmy the notable on August 15, 2008 at 9:35 PM
terryannonline on August 15, 2008 at 9:33 PM
I realize that exactly. Which is why, when people tell me there is evidence for God, I ask them to show it to me. By the very definition of God, as a supernatural being who must be accepted on faith, there can be no evidence for him.

The standard of proof is on those telling me something exists that everything in the physical world contradicts

There is no such thing as an agnostic. People who call themselves agnostic are simply believers who know how stupid it is and think by claiming they are open minded they’re smarter than everyone else.
If you lived in a world where the majority of people believed in the Tooth Fairy and wanted their belief in the Tooth Fairy to be a major part of public policy, wouldn’t you want to to be included in that decision making? Just so you can make fun of them, if nothing else?
I hope they tape it because I’d LOVE to hear what Hitchen’s will say. He does a very good job of making religious people look as stupid as they all are.

I don’t know if it’s “verifiable,” but I see God’s work through my life as of late.
1) When I was dating my ex, I had a dream about my wedding. In the dream, I couldn’t see the groom’s face. Fast forward, oh, about a year or so. I am now dating my husband. I have the same dream about my wedding, except this time the groom’s face is that of my now-husband.
2) When we were trying to get pregnant with my son, while we were living in the mobile home, I was having a hard time. The place was a two bedroom place with barely enough room for a baby. A few months after we moved into our current house, I was pregnant with my son.
3) I was laid off from my job in March as a reporter. At that point, I had a feeling that God had something better for me, but wasn’t sure what it was yet. Around the fourth of July, I ran into one of the freelance photographers for the paper that I used to work for. He told me things really went downhill after I left.
I could point out several other examples, but these are the most recent ones.

I also know that there are those who live their lives form their values and make their judgements based on what they can know.
Come to me with something beyond blind faith and I will listen.

“We must fight for a purpose in life, struggling against the passions, means struggling for life’s purpose.
And the purpose of this life is the next life!
If you do not earn the next life, a future joyous life, if you die forever, then life has no purpose.
You cannot reach the joyous future life, if you do not fight against the passions and if you do not fight for the love of others, sacrificing yourself out of love for the others.
Therein lies the purpose of the cross, to carry the cross, to live your life as a cross bearer, so that you’re capable of sacrificing yourself for others.
Man is created after the image of the Son, and we also feel that we are sons.
We cannot consider ourselves the ultimate being…the ultimate reality..
We remember that we too have a father, and the one supreme father is the Father. But we are not born from Him, we are created from Him, but we are made brothers with the Son of the Father.
This is our teaching: the Holy Trinity, and Jesus Christ, Son of God made man!
These are the two fundamental teachings of Christianity.
Without them life is nonsensical.
Only Christianity can give life a purpose!”

Sorry Allah, but these types will label you an appeaser. They may be older and actually have jobs but they are not that far removed from the (ir)rational response squad types and tend to encourage them anyway.

This is the sort of thing that annoys me almost as much as the Michael Newdow types.

How is that annoying?
“If you do not earn the next life, a future joyous life, if you die forever, then life has no purpose.”
You are going to die someday…you do know that right?

Oh BTW I am not and Atheist. and I don’t have anything against em.
as to proving God…
seems simple enough.
Atheist usually believe in science right?
then they should know (or if not should study) about entropy.
well if you believe that entropy exists then you should believe in God. because the fact that there is any kind of life on earth after you really think about the entire universe in a constant state of entropy then you should wonder how we are here at all. Indeed if you look at what entropy is and how we are surrounded by it at every moment then how do we even exist without some higher power keeping it all in “IMBALANCE” so that we somehow survive?

“If you don’t believe what I believe, your life has no purpose.”
It doesn’t get more arrogant, narcissistic, and condescending than that.
