Huckabee: You know who probably shouldn’t be VP? Mitt Romney

Quoth the Huck, “I’ve never said that I thought that Mitt Romney’s personal religion ought to have a thing to do with whether he should be elected.” Some might dispute that, coming as it does from a guy who pointedly touted himself as a “Christian leader,” but I gave him the benefit of the doubt on the infamous “Jesus and Satan” comment so you’ll have to go it alone. His concern about Romney, he says, is the fact that he’s a flip-flopper, a fair criticism but one which seems a tad exaggerated given his effusive praise later in the segment for pro-choice Tom Ridge. It sounds like he prefers the latter to the former, which, if true, would mean he’s more comfortable with a guy who overtly supports abortion than a guy who used to but has now (allegedly) seen the light. Strange.
Anyway. I love posting Huck clips just because he’s the one Republican our commenters are harder on than I am myself, but if you’re eager for an actual news hook, read Jonathan Martin’s report of the meeting between Team McCain’s social-con outreach director and Huck’s supporters in Michigan. The race for 2012 is already on. Exit quotation: “Privately, though, Romney’s loyalists continue to loathe Huckabee at levels that approach the earlier disdain between Obama and Clinton camps.”

Can someone please make this man go away?

He just can’t let it go, can he?
Hope Huckabee and the Huckabigots are happy with a pro-abortion VP.

Yeah? What does he know anyway?

Nice to see that Huck lost his campaign weight that he gained.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 14, 2008 at 3:51 PM
I just listened to Sean Hannity say on the radio that he heard from people on the know of McCain’s VP selection that a majority want Lieberman. The only one resisting it is McCain because of the conservative base.
I don’t know. I like Lieberman, but I can understand the frustration. This election is important and will be close.
The only choice that will make a lot of people happy is Sarah Palin.

redrock on August 14, 2008 at 3:52 PM
The fact that he’d prefer a pro-choice candidate to the now pro-life Romney lets the mask slip a bit so yeah, it’s likely about the Mormon thing.
Slublog on August 14, 2008 at 3:52 PM
Huck would love nothing more then to have Mac throw Romney under the bus, and Huck would willingly back over himself a few times. But it has nothing to do with religion mind you!
Spirit of 1776 on August 14, 2008 at 3:53 PM
Okay, Mikey, You know who else shouldn’t be VP??
I’ll give you one guess.
I’ll give you a hint.
It rhymes with phuckamee.
cntrlfrk on August 14, 2008 at 3:54 PM
Notice how Mitt opted a while back to take the high road throughout the rest of this campaign and Huckabigot is still busy being a baby. I guarantee this won’t go unnoticed by GOP leadership. I’d be willing to bet most Evangelicals don’t even like this guy. He just has his own band of loyalists who are busy attacking Romney when they should be pushing McCain. I would NEVER vote for a fraud like Huckabee!
davenp35 on August 14, 2008 at 3:54 PM
I agree with Huck. As I look back, though I voted for McCain in the primary, my second choice would have been Huckabee over Romney. I just didn’t trust Romney at all.
Complete7 on August 14, 2008 at 3:54 PM
Mitt’s loyalists aren’t alone in that regard. Man,..I just want to get through Nov. 2008 with minimal damage; the thought of 2012 with the Huckster on stage makes me nauseous. Time for The Serenity Prayer, I think.

Huckabee is a former fatty, not-so-pretty and probably clips coupons.

Good Lord. I thought this man had gone away. He wants to change the Constitution to be in line with the word of God, calls legislation that bars benefits for illegals unChristian, and sneakingly asks questions about Mitt’s religion in order to scare people. Why would anyone think this has anything to do with religion?

No..there is no way that Mccain is stupid enough to pick Mitt(”stronger abortion “right” defender than Ted Kennedy”)Romney
SaintOlaf on August 14, 2008 at 3:58 PM
I don’t think Huck is such a conservative either, and maybe Jesus wouldn’t be in our current society. But I still see the abortion issue as foundational, and I don’t think I can vote for a pro-infanticide ticket. After all McCain is very likely a one term candidate.

Tell God you did the right thing staying at home when Obama’s new Supreme Court expands the protections of Roe. All that matters now is 270 electoral votes.

I don’t normally resort to ad hominem attacks, but you’re absolutely out of your mind. Nobody likes Huckabee, except for a few loyalists who are mistaken in thinking Huckabee is a real Christian. No real Christian would EVER behave they way he has. It was the most laughable thing I have ever seen when he tried to portray himself as pure as snow when his campaign set the gold standard for dirty tricks and slander.
davenp35 on August 14, 2008 at 4:06 PM
And the term “values voters” drives me up a wall. I guess everyone else practices value-less voting?
Slublog on August 14, 2008 at 4:07 PM
If I recall correctly, the independents liked McCain the best.
I didn’t see any polling one way or another, but, I find it highly unlikely that Democrats preferred an evangelical Christian over something more generic (evangelicals, unfairly, give them nightmares of a theocracy).
As for Republicans, they seemed to have chosen McCain (by a wide margin) first and Romney second.
It seems that if Huckabee’s appeal in a majority Christian nation were as great as what you claim, the small minority of “extreme Christian hating militant bigot atheists” would not have been able to swing a distant 3rd place finish for the beloved Huckabee.
JadeNYU on August 14, 2008 at 4:07 PM
From the Jonathan Martin link:
The Huckabots are every bit as creepy and cultish as Obama’s hardcore supporters, if not more so. She was offended because a former Romney aide now working for McCain dared show his face? These people are spiteful and insane. In a perfect world, they’d not be allowed anywhere near a voting booth.
And this from someone who opposed Mitt getting the nomination over doubts about his politics- seems like a decent guy and I don’t care about his religion. My distaste for the Huckster and his nutjob supporters, however- that’s political and personal.

” I had a talk with Mr. Putin and I said that I, as President of the USA, had a question to ask him: Do you accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour? And you know what he said? He said that there in Russia, they have had a Christian church for hundreds and hundreds of years. He said that they believe in Jesus just like we do! Their church is called the Russian Orthodox Church. Imagine that! Well, I found this conversation enormously comforting. I asked him, Do Russians eat fried chicken with their fingers like we do, too? Guess what? They do.
I found Mr. Putin to be a rather good humored fellow. Every time I looked at him it looked like he was smiling but trying to hide it. I’m sure he was trying to be dignified and serious due to the importance of a state visit from the leader of America.”

Who won Washington state? Did you not know Huck had to sue them for voter fraud?
How many other states did that happen in?
In fact who won Louisianna? That’s right, Huck did.
Can you explain why Mccain ended up with that states delegates even though he lost?
But really the number one person to blame is Fred…he was going to drop out after iowa but stayed in at Mccain’s request just to screw Huck’s chances there…the day before S.C. primary Huck was up in florida and California big time.

DfDeportation on August 14, 2008 at 4:12 PM
Yeah- it was millions of Christian-hating militant bigot Republican athiests who kept the (dishonest, sleazy RINO) Huckster from getting the nomination. Republicans are known for refusing to vote for openly Christian candidates.
Do us all a favor- don’t vote, and for the sake of humanity never, ever breed. The crazy gene you carry in your DNA might get passed to the offspring.
Hollowpoint on August 14, 2008 at 4:12 PM
As for 2012, I sincerely hope that there are few, if any, repeat runners from this time around. Well, I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the conservatives that never got off the ground, like Duncan Hunter, run again, but only if they’ve figured out a better way to run their campaign.
I like Romney. I voted for him in the primary because I thought he was the best and most capable conservative in the field. In 2012, I hope that the selection has improved so much that Romney (if he runs) will be the bottom of the barrel. I’m tired of voting for the guy that sucks the least.
JadeNYU on August 14, 2008 at 4:14 PM
Juan “Z-Visa” McCain won the primaries simply because of the friendly obsessive media coverage. Is he Carl Cameron’s brother?

Huckabee is making McCain look good. If you thought McCain was bitter after the 2000 campaign, just wait til McCain names Mitt his running mate. : ))

Huckabee is revolting. Mitt is everything that Huck ain’t, and that’s what bothers him.
What is it with Arkansas, huh? Clinton put the state on the political map, and out crawls this toad.
Cody1991 on August 14, 2008 at 4:18 PM
I’m a conservative christian who would like liberal Huckabee to just go away. I disagree fundamentally with Mormon theology but do not see Romney to be any more dangerous than any non-religious vp pick. I think he would be a good pick actually. Sure Mormonism would get an extra plug for their false religion and that would be unfortunate.
I know Huckabee thought ill of Romney’s Mormonism but I didnt’ realize until now just how far he was against it. It’s beyond the religion thing and almost prejudice. He needs someone with wisdom and in his circle to point this out to him.
Like I said. I’d like him to just go away.
shick on August 14, 2008 at 4:18 PM
Are you suggesting that Huck actually won but that there was a conspiracy in each state to give the win to someone else in order to deny him the nomination?
Or, is your argument that the vote was fair, but Fred stayed in the race and cost Huckabee the votes that would have put him over the top?
Or, do you think that there was massive voter fraud designed to deny Huckabee the nomination, but, just in case, Fred also stayed in the contest in order to guarantee that he wouldn’t win?
Of course, there are also those anti-Christian bigot atheists that you mentioned earlier. Perhaps they were the ones that orchestrated the voter fraud?
I’m starting to get confused by all the reasons you’ve given in this thread alone as to why Huckabee didn’t win…
JadeNYU on August 14, 2008 at 4:19 PM
I will never, never vote for any ticket with that disingenuous SOB on it. I don’t care if it means voting for Obama or voting downticket. I MIGHT be able to control my nausea long enough to push that button for McCain, but the Huckster – the lying, push polling, disingenuous, raising money for corrupt porkers, “social ‘justice’ for the glory of government” (not God) will never get my vote.
Laura on August 14, 2008 at 4:19 PM
Huckabee is the only candidate I hate more than McCain. They are cut from the same socialist cloth of big government, higher taxes, less personal freedoms, etc. I’m not surprised McCain’s people are using this “evangelical” as their sounding board for strategy. The jokes on them though, social conservatives and evangelicals are not the kind of voter Huckabee attracts.

He is jealous because Romney’s wife is pretty. Huck’s wife is way fat and ugly.
He is jealous because Romney has 5 attractive and successful sons. Huck’s fat-ass son was kicked out of bible camp for hanging dogs.
He is jealous that Romney made a billion bucks and THEN went into public service. Huck was a standard snake-handling, formerly-white-robe-wearing, bigoted evangelical nut job before he went into public service.
Huck’s only future is to prey on the less intelligent for a living. Mitt doesnt need a future…dude is already worth a billion.

Second, Huckabee using his “religion” as a political tool (the floating cross, I mean bookcase) is about as un-Christian as you can get.
That James Dobson endorsed this guy was a disappointment. Huckabee is rather a fake, I think.

If talking about the man’s record is now slander, then sure. And yes, we all know McCain sucks on amnesty. That’s got nothing to do with anything.
What about the pardons? Why would someone who (at least should) believe in the concept of justice pardon dangerous criminals against the will of his own state’s law enforcement? Why would a supposed conservative engage in nanny state social programs?
Gah. The dude is NOT a conservative. Run as an independent, but this isn’t the party for that. Yeesh.

You talking about McCain or Huckabee? The epithet fits either way.
I think the problem McCain has is that all the numbers and strategists are telling him that Mitt Romney is the best choice to energize the part of the party who distrusts and loathes McCain himself. Yet, being a stubborn old bastard, McCain refuses to listen to this advice and is out there trying to find some other option. In the end, I think he will settle on some VP nominee that will not energize the base- thus handing the election to Obama. McCain ran a lousy campaign in 2000 and this one is even worse. It is all over but the losing.

I feel your pain, pal. Believe me, I KNOW what it feels like to be unwelcome in a group of people. Huckabee is pretty much unwelcome with many (if not most) people that post here (including our host). You take a beating here at HotAir nearly every time you post. I have to give you points for your fortitude. I would have slunk away and hid a long time ago (if it had been me).
I you really MUST know where I am coming from, I would have supported EITHER Romney OR Huckabee — had they gotten the nomination. Neither were my favorite. Like Ann Coulter, I was a Duncan Hunter supporter. (Not that I’m a big Annie fan – I like Michelle Malkin WAY better.)
The biggest difference between you and me is that you see politics and your faith (or your religion, if you like) as inseparable. I see politics as having virtually NOTHING in common with my faith. To me, politics is an innately nasty evil business — so I don’t hold out a lot of expectations for the people that involve themselves with it. I view things through the lens of “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and render unto God what is God’s.” If I am somehow deficient for thinking that way, by all means, you have the right to tell me so.
