Nancy Pelosi … Washington outsider?

posted at 8:10 am on August 13, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Most of the commentary springing from Nancy Pelosi’s interview on Larry King Live on Monday focused on her apparent backtracking on a vote for drilling in the OCS.  However, the end of the interview should raise a few eyebrows, too.  Even the famously gracious King couldn’t quite choke down Pelosi’s assertion that she’s a Washington outsider:

PELOSI: I’m never certain of anything. Today, I would be certain. I just think that it is the opportunity for our country to move away from Washington.  You know, I’m the Speaker of the House. I’m an outsider in Washington, D.C. .  Business as usual in Washington is not in the people’s interests. It there’s for the special interests.

KING: You would be the ultimate insider, wouldn’t you?

PELOSI: Well, I — you would think. But I…

KING: The speaker of the House isn’t an insider?

PELOSI: Well, they didn’t want me to be Speaker of the House.

KING: But you are.

PELOSI: I had to fight these special interests. And now to make the change, we have to have a Democratic president. And Barack Obama has done more than anyone in terms of passing the toughest ethical bill — ethics bill in Congress, to shed the bright light on transparency on the link between special interests and legislation in Washington.

Nancy Pelosi got elected to Congress in 1987.  She’s been in Washington for over 20 years.  She maneuvered her way into the Speaker’s chair despite others having seniority over her, such as Jack Murtha, Steny Hoyer, and several others.  If Pelosi isn’t the “ultimate insider”, as King put it, then the term “insider” has no meaning at all.

Next, let’s take a look at Pelosi’s paranoia.  I imagine a whole host of Republicans didn’t want Pelosi to become speaker — they’d rather it be John Boehner.  Some Democrats probably supported other Democrats for the job, too, but that’s the nature of elections at any level.  Who, exactly, are the “they” that conspire against Pelosi?  Voters?  Democrats?  Little green men?  Who?

The whole “outsider” cliché is a Democratic theme to help Barack Obama, whose only qualification for the Presidency is ironically the three years he’s spent in Washington.  The “outsider” theme works for governors who come from a state filled to the brim with authentic Americans to show the Beltway crowd a thing or three about real issues, blah blah blah.  It’s misleading for Obama to assume this mantle, but it’s absolutely pathetic to see Pelosi try claiming herself as an outsider to a place she runs.

Ed, are you being just too funny with that? I swear, every time I see a picture of Pelosi my eyebrows go up automatically.

I love the way Nancy blames every problem on “special interests”.

MarkTheGreat on August 13, 2008 at 8:26 AM

Anybody else reminded of the ogre’s wife from The Time Bandits? Pelosi never misses a chance to point out that she’s speaker of the house. You know just ahead Robert Byrd for succession to the presidency. She has a serious case of overinflated ego. Too bad her approval numbers are in the toilet, lower than the evil George Bush’s.

Everyone here is being mean to poor Nancy. After all, next to obama, Nancy has done more to elect McCain POTUS than anyone else in America. We all owe Nancy our thanks for turning an almost inevitable Democratic landslide and control of all three branches (appointing Supreme Court Judges) of Government into a very competitive election.

Thank you Nancy.

This has GOT to be The Onion… Or a Saturday Night Live skit.

I always thought San Fran Nan had to be the dumbest Speaker of the House, Ever, and in competition for the dumbest Career Congress Critter ever.

But this would be embarrassing, even for someone who had already acknowledged that they had become a caricature of themselves.

LegendHasIt on August 13, 2008 at 8:53 AM

That picture on the front page is proof positive that Halloween is coming down the pipe soon… Talk about the perfect “scary” mask…

I emailed both of my state senators regarding their position on the energy crisis our politicians have put us in. Both of my state senators are Democrats. I heard back from Baucus a few days ago, and I heard back from Testor yesterday. Both basically said the same thing; we can’t drill our way out of this mess, oil companies need to drill on the leased land they already have rights to, they don’t favor drilling off shore, we need to focus on new energy sources, et al…

The latest polling data here in Montana shows montanans in favor of drilling now, drilling everywhere we can, in line with the national average of 70%. I simply replied to my Senators that they are holding the Democrat party line, rather than representing the will of montanans; that they are representing the DNC rather than representing the people of Montana; that they are beholden to Pelosi rather than the very people who elected them into office.

People say “America is not what it once was”… I agree with that statement. America used to have politicians that were interested in America and it’s people above all else; now we have politicians that are more interested in being “world leaders” and “saving the planet” rather than caring for America and it’s people; we used to have politicians that cared what Americans needed rather than what the UN says we need. Yes, America has changed by way of it’s pathetic leaders!

sabbott on August 13, 2008 at 8:55 AM

This woman is a complete scatterbrained dingbat. She couldn’t run the housewares department at a San Jose Wal-Mart, yet for some reason, she’s the Speaker of the House.

How is the Democrat Party taken seriously, when every single politician associated with it, is lying dope?

In addition to being addled, Democrat pols are also completely corrupt and laughingly incompetent.

Still, they’re taken seriously, even when they are not remotely qualified to govern themselves, much less other people.

This truly is a parallel universe. Somewhere, there is a Democrat Party with politicians with knowledge, qualifications and integrity, where the media disdains them and the people vote them out.

NoDonkey on August 13, 2008 at 8:57 AM

Technically, it’s true. She’s from Baltimore and that’s outside Washington.

JammieWearingFool on August 13, 2008 at 8:58 AM

Her lack of leadership demonstrates, and reinforces my belief in, theneed for term limits on Congress.

Two terms for the Senate.

Three terms for the House.

If one wants to run for a seat from one chamber to the other, one must wait one full year and one election cycle of the chamber for which one wants to run.

madmonkphotog on August 13, 2008 at 8:58 AM

She had to fight special interest to become speaker of the house? Harold Ford Jr., wanted the position, and they told him condescendingly, you are young and ambitious, you will get your turn. Message from the DNC, Old white women first. Noxious, that is the word that comes to mind, does she know that she is a noxious human being? Better question would be does she care.

Or you could pay a plastic surgeon to yank the skin on your face up a few inches and re-attach it to your head, like Nancy did.

But your way is probably a lot less painful and expensive. Even better, when you get tired of looking like a freak, you can always let your eyebrows grow back. Poor Nancy doesn’t have that option.

Face it, Washington is a fantasy land disconnected from any part of America except New York City, and parts of Californai… they’ve created their own little nuanced world where even words have different meanings… and the MSM chattering class has perpetuated this with the now constant “interviews” where its all about what they SAID they did, instead of reporting on what they did.

Romeo13 on August 13, 2008 at 10:15 AM

She can’t become an outsider quickly enough. Thankfully her anti-energy policies are helping GOP efforts to highlight the Democrats anti-energy agenda and have giftwrapped an issue on which the GOP can actually use to bludgeon the Democrats.

And many people here scoffed at me, saying, essentially, that Pickens was doing this out of the goodness of his heart, with the best interest of the nation in mind; That he was so rich already that he couldn’t be doing this for his own benefit.
