Merkley flunks both Georgia test and table manners

posted at 7:29 am on August 13, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The Oregon race for the Senate favors the Democratic challenger, Jeff Merkley, over Republican incumbent Gordon Smith, which normally would not surprise many given Oregon’s usual tilt to the Left. However, after seeing Merkley in action, even Oregonians have to wonder how they could choose him over almost anyone. On a campaign stop on August 9th, two days after Russia launched an attack on Georgia that captured the attention of the world, Merkley seemed stumped by a question about it:

Even after finally figuring out that a question on the national security and foreign policy implications of Georgia didn’t refer to a “siege on Savannah”, as one of the bystanders joked, Merkley still couldn’t answer the question.  After wiping his hands on his pants several times, he finally told his questioner that he’s had to study up and get back to him.

Of course, that’s about the same level of expertise as the Democratic presidential nominee demonstrated in this crisis, too.  But at least Barack Obama has better table manners.

Is there supposed to be video with that? I’m not getting anything. Guy sounds like your average dem. Dumb as a bag of rocks when it comes to what’s important.

thekingtut on August 13, 2008 at 7:42 AM

Video should be working now.

A Firefly manners tip:

Small, concealable firearms go to the far right of the place setting.

World affairs, or this yummy sammich?

Merkley makes a choice.

Nice to see Uncle Jesse relocated from Hazzard County to Oregon.

Rhinoboy on August 13, 2008 at 8:01 AM

Im betting Oregon will elect this moron too.

haha I thought the same thing!

becki51758 on August 13, 2008 at 8:03 AM

At least he didn’t try to shake hands with the questioner at the end. What a slob.

BigD on August 13, 2008 at 8:06 AM

Yeah he didn’t know (inexcusable), but he didn’t lie about not knowing (commendable) as most politicians would have.

A net positive for him.

JiangxiDad on August 13, 2008 at 8:09 AM

Most polls I’ve seen have Smith ahead of Merkley. Rasmussen has Smith up by 6.

crushliberalism on August 13, 2008 at 8:12 AM

I sort of chuckled that when you don’t like the question you put another bite in your mouth. “Can’t talk now, eating.” I think Lucy did that on an old show.

Marcus on August 13, 2008 at 8:29 AM

Note to Merkley: FYI, William Tecumseh Sherman did not rise from the dead and begib another March to the Sea.

Alden Pyle on August 13, 2008 at 8:39 AM

It was Uncle Jesse! And Truly, this guy is dumb. Even my sister who never watches the news knows there is a war going on in Georgia. Yeah, this is the kind of genius we need in the senate.

thekingtut on August 13, 2008 at 9:00 AM

Well, at least when they asked Merkley about the conflict in Georgia he didn’t demand that the fascist Christers and the evil Neocons immediately stop their attacks on Jimmy Carter’s homeland.

Just let him eat his waffle, Ed.

Inane, pathetic, and useless…if this guy gets in, then I’m sorry but the American electorate is just plain stupid…at least in Oregon.

If Obama gets elected, then….

Richard Romano on August 13, 2008 at 9:19 AM

Another worthless Democrat politician, nothing to see here.

Again, it seems that the Democrats go out of their way to find the WORST possible candidates for elected office, then market the hell out of them.

It works for Bud Lite, I guess.

My eyes are still burning from looking at Pelosi pics. Was that Dusty Hill from ZZ Top in the background?

“Was that Dusty Hill from ZZ Top in the background?”

Either that or Uncle Jesse from the Dukes of Hazzard.

Is there moonshine in Oregon?

I’d rather have this fu*king slob in congress than Gordon Smith. Stupid is better than dishonest and leftist.

I love Mr. Beardsly in the background, there. ;o)

Never wipe your hands on you pants, socks yes, hair in a pinch, but never pants. You might end up with a salesman pocket (a greasy patch on your right rear pocket).

easy on August 13, 2008 at 11:22 AM

Yeah, he seemed more interested in the sandwich than he did the question. Don’t most people on the road have a radio to listen to? If he’s been on the road for three days, running for public office, I would like to think that he’s listening to news instead of classic rock. He really needs to be more informed….oh, wait, that would actually take time away from those wonderful sandwiches!

He doesn’t read a newspaper, have internet access or have any communication with the real world for 3 days “on the road”?

Typical uninformed lib.

nottakingsides on August 13, 2008 at 11:52 AM

If anyone wonders why Congress is unable to solve any of our nation’s issues, just let them see this.

Like this guy, the majority of Congressmen are simply unqualified for the positions they hold. They have no earthly idea of what it is they’re doing. They vote the party line. An Irish Setter could do their job.

If we had an actual media in this country, clowns like this wouldn’t get past the first wicket.

Unfortunately, the press portrays every Democrat as a omniscient savior and every Republican as Snidely Whiplash.

Since the majority of media members are demonstrably incompetent, it’s no wonder that they have no concept of competence.

NoDonkey on August 13, 2008 at 11:53 AM

Maybe he confused South Ossetia with South Carolina. I mean that ARE both near Georgia.
