Bill Kristol: Colin Powell will probably endorse Obama, may speak at Democratic convention; Update: “I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol’s musings”; Update: Brzezinski thinks Powell will endorse, too

Given the posts we’ve written on this subject, I could have told you it’ll probably happen too, right down to the convention appearance. In fact, I did!
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention, Weekly Standard Publisher Bill Kristol told FOX News exclusively on Thursday.
“He may well give a speech at the Democratic convention explaining his endorsement of Obama,” Kristol said, citing inside sources. “For whatever reason I think he has decided he’s going to endorse Obama. I think [Powell] has a high respect for Senator McCain, they go back a long way.”
Kristol continued, “This is not an absolute done deal, but these people are very confident that Powell will endorse Obama.”
Kristol said sources told him Powell will “quite possibly” speak at the Democratic convention on the same night as Obama’s vice-presidential selection and former President Bill Clinton.
Is there any political figure in America whose endorsement would mean more to Barry O? Impeccable military credentials, “reformed” Bush cabinet member, harbinger of the very sort of post-racial crossover appeal The One is desperately seeking, and a spectacular counter to Lieberman’s own imminent Zell Miller-ish turn at the Republican convention. But is it true? Powell’s said before he won’t be attending either convention and his spokeswoman denies today’s story to Fox in strong terms. I had the same hunch Geraghty did, that someone in the GOP leaked this to Kristol towards some strategic end knowing that it’d be hugely publicized — but, er, towards what end? And why leak it through Kristol when that’s only going to highlight the fact that conservative fingerprints are on it?
Update: Can’t find any story about this yet on ABC News’s website but here’s the word via The Page:
Powell tells ABC News: “I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol’s musings. I am not going to the convention. I have made this clear.”
Interesting, he doesn’t deny the endorsement detail, just the convention part.
Update: Ah, here’s the ABC story now. And what do you know: “After telling ABC News by phone that he would not be going to the Democratic National Convention, Powell ended the conversation without entertaining any follow-up questions as to whether he would be crossing party lines to endorse Obama.”
Update: Another guy who’s not really in a position to know weighs in: Zbigniew Brzezinski tells HuffPo he too expects Powell to endorse Obama. “Sort of.”

All very strange. After all, Powell has already donated $2,300 to McCain’s campaign.

False flag ops when Powell endorses McCain instead ?
William Amos on August 13, 2008 at 5:57 PM
Either way, I don’t care for Powell. I respect his military service, but he does not seem to me to be a republican, more so not a conservative.
I am annoyed at the liberals for dogging Powell on his work with President Bush, then kissing his butt for his endorsement of the Obamination. Why would Powell appease these jerks and give his endorsement?
jencab on August 13, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Powell was a great military man, but I was never convinced he was a true Conservative and I always felt he was overrated in terms of politics. If this is true, I don’t think it matters much, sort of a reaction to having Lieberman at the Republican convention.
echosyst on August 13, 2008 at 5:59 PM
If he does endorse Barry, I’ll lose a little respect for the ol’ war chief…
Sacwannabe on August 13, 2008 at 5:59 PM
These sorts of ‘leaks’ are usually to pressure someone into stating a position. My guess is the Obama camp leaked it to see if they couldn’t get Powell to say something nice about Obama before the convention and after his foreign policy muckup he just accomplished.
bnelson44 on August 13, 2008 at 5:59 PM
I remember Powell’s speech to the military dictator, when he over threw Haitian Govt., Powell mentioned something about honor and integrity.
Dr Evil on August 13, 2008 at 6:00 PM
If he does this he’ll have been the single most disappointing political/military figure of my lifetime. He can’t possibly think this is good right now, as a military man, under the current world conditions no matter how much he would like to support someone based only on their ethnicity.
And then there’s Condaleeza Rice… *sigh* What would her grandfather have thought?
Sultry Beauty on August 13, 2008 at 6:01 PM
I noticed that Powell’s spokesperson only said that he wouldn’t attend either convention. It didn’t say he wouldn’t endorse Obama.
Buford Gooch on August 13, 2008 at 6:01 PM
I do not think that Powell was “a great military man” at all. He was the type of guy the Bushes felt comfortable with. His actions (or lack of actions) during the Plame affair showed that he had very little loyalty. He was only slightly better as Sec. of State then Condi Clueless Rice.

I’m assuming no one here will be surprised if this is true.

I always thought Powell blew a gasket when it turned out the intelligence about WMD was wrong. It seemed to me that the blow to his crediblity as the one making the case before the UN was more than he could take. He’s been a little off kilter ever since. I don’t blame him.

To me, any republican that endorses and supports Obama is not a true republican.
This guy is a socialist and the most hardcore leftist since Carter. And that is saying a lot.
Powell, I thought, was McCain’s friend. If he does endorse the Obamination, the little respect I have for him will be gone forever.
jencab on August 13, 2008 at 6:07 PM
I will probably not care what Powell thinks about anything.
progressoverpeace on August 13, 2008 at 6:07 PM
It does not matter who’s fingerprints are on it. In this chess match Colin’s weakness is his aversion to the spotlight. Powell could have been the first black President. He turned it down. I’m guessing because he did not want the scrutiny, and he enjoyed having a personal life not under a microscope, etc.. I think his personality is better suited to come in under the radar make the speech then stay away from the media until after the elections. This puts him in a pinch. Once the media sinks it’s teeth in there is no where Powell could go to escape them. So get it into the news cycle and let the spotlight drive him away from the convention.

The absolute hate I’ve seen on some of the conservative site for Powell is representative of the crapper the GOP is in and that there needs to be a reformation in how the conservative internet is structured. I wouldn’t blame him if he cuddled Bambi.

How important or surprising is it that Colin is siding with his bro?
UnEasyRider on August 13, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Colin Powell I’m pretty ambivalent on. Especially if he’s compared to General Petraeus or Norman Schwarzkopf.
It’s a free country. He can endorse whomever he wants. But if he endorses McCain, watch the tongue bath he’s getting on the MSM turn around into him being nothing but a Bush shill.
mjk on August 13, 2008 at 6:26 PM
If this is true then Powell is absolutely disgusting. He owes his success and progress to conservative icons like Reagan and supporters like Casper Weinberger and the first president Bush. Powell is obviously an opportunist who is willing to sell himself to the highest bidder. Obama and conservative Republicans have irreconcilable value differences and no one of any conservative depth would sell out to Obama. Powell has obviously been masquerading as a conservative and can now become the liberal he always wanted to be.
rplat on August 13, 2008 at 6:28 PM
Oh, c’mon… there’s plenty of time to comment. Are you endorsing Hopie Changie?
You’re a nice guy, Colin, but stop being such a Hamlet.
silverfox on August 13, 2008 at 6:30 PM
Why would an endorsement by Powell be a “a big deal” as Geraghty suggests? Um, haven’t the Dems been telling that the Bush administration are just mess ups, good for nothing. So getting Bush’s Sec. of State to endorse you helps how? If Powell were to endorse McCain I wouldn’t care one bit.
terryannonline on August 13, 2008 at 6:30 PM
so the man the left spent years denouncing, calling “Uncle Tom” and calling a liar… he’s going to speak and endorse Obama, and the Obamites are gonna eat this up why?
Kaptain Amerika on August 13, 2008 at 6:34 PM
Sure because he is a disloyal mediocrity in the tradition of Scott McClellan and Michael Brown. What is Powell so sacrosanct that we cannot criticize him or does he get a pass just like The One because of his pigmentation?
Hilts on August 13, 2008 at 6:38 PM
What I consider a more certain endorsement of Obama is that of J.C. Watts. He’s terribly miffed that McCain doesn’t have significant numbers of A-As in high-level positions on his advisory team. Was Watts hoping for one of those positions?
And, why did Watts walk away from the US House? Was being chairman of the House Republican Conference not enough? I never understood that. Feeling bad about breaking his term limits pledge doesn’t quite get it.
Perhaps something happened when he chaired GOPAC…
Whatever, Watts has all but endorsed Obama.
Aunt B on August 13, 2008 at 6:41 PM
It is true when it comes to politics in this country. Depressing, but true.
I have the greatest respect for Rice and Powell, but if Michael Jackson or J.J. Walker ran for president, they would be falling all over themselves.
South Park needs an episode with Cartman coloring his skin and running for office.
Hening on August 13, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Wasn’t the left calling him an “Uncle Tom” a few years ago. Or something about him being President Bushes “House Boy”?
PappaMac on August 13, 2008 at 6:54 PM
It would seem to me that it would be the Demos who leaked this story for obvious reasons. Kristol is probably is on their speed dial, for obvious reasons.
So what if Colin Powell “sort of” endorses Obama, for obvious reasons? Barry already has the ‘African American’ vote. Anyone who would vote for the Great Bi-Racial Hope because Powell endorsed him is not a conservative anyway. I’d vote for Powell, but I’m not under any illusion as to his liberal tendencies.
Christine on August 13, 2008 at 6:56 PM
Watts has no reason to endorse Obama other than skin color. It can’t be based on resume and Watts was in politics long enough to recognize empty promises when he hears them. I will be pleasantly surprised if Powell doesn’t endorse Obama.
a capella on August 13, 2008 at 6:56 PM
Damn, could Powell possibly choose a worse line of behavior? I know many would say yes, but not for the same reasons. When he could do something to stop the war in Iraq, he chose to be silent. Now he’s finally decided to speak up and say what?
- Remember years of me saying nothing? That’s when things went to hell.
Instead of pointed and deserved criticism of the war, he’ll now broadly support every bullshit including in the realm of economy proposed by Obama. This is just great.
P.S. Black racist! Out of the l00p!!1 Didn’t he really fight on the Iraqi side during the Bush Sr. time?
freevillage on August 13, 2008 at 6:56 PM
Heard Watts on Hanity a couple of days ago. I didn’t get the impression that Watts was in the Obama camp.
PappaMac on August 13, 2008 at 6:56 PM
I think Powell told Andrea Mitchell he supports Obama. I think that’s why she took such a sudden turn toward “The Pentagon told Obama he couldn’t visit Landstuhl” and “How dare you use the c-word” land.
MayBee on August 13, 2008 at 7:02 PM
I respect and appreicate Powell’s service for his country, but have never felt that Powell had real conservative beliefs. He always seemed on the wrong side of many issues, IMO. If he does come out for Obama, I will lose alot of respect for his intelligence.
katieanne on August 13, 2008 at 7:03 PM
John McCain doesn’t need anyone’s endorsement. The fact that Barry Obambi so desperately needs one from Powell so speaks volumes about his lack of gravitas.

If Powell does endorse Obama, I (as a fellow veteran) will have lost all respect for him. Someone with his years of service to our nation tends to have a decent understanding of what America stands for. I remember seeing his name on the Ranger Memorial at Ft. Benning when I was standing there and I remember the pride I felt knowing that there were men like him in the upper echelons of government. In endorsing Obama he would be abandoning everything he has fought for in order to lend credibility to a Socialist with a radical leftist agenda. He would be abandoning all his fellow servicemembers who fought and died to halt the spread of Socialism and Communism. I would be disappointed on a very personal level. I have faith that he has better judgment than this.

I have two points about Powell:
1.I don’t agree with everything he says but he has never used his disagreements about the handling of the Iraq war as a political baseball bat against this administration like Scott McClellan,Richard Clark, and the democrats that said all the same things about Saddam years before Bush was President and voted to take him out.
2.He served his country well as a Soldier and surely was better at his Sec. of State job as many in the past have been (Madeleine Albright for example).
I will be disappointed if he supports Obama, but I am not going to throw him under the bus like Obama did his mama.
Baxter Greene on August 13, 2008 at 7:10 PM
Colin Powell should be viewed with contempt.
Powell showed his sleazy disloyalty years ago when the Valerie Plame matter broke out and, even though the Bush Administration was being hammered in the press about it, then Secretary of State Powell did not tell President Bush what then Secretary of State Powell knew — that Powell’s man then Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage was the one who told Bob Novak about Plame being the CIA agent who recommended Plame’s left wing Democrat husband Wilson for the fact finding trip to Niger.
That at this time of a major foreign policy crisis Powell would endorse the inexperienced and clueless Obama once again shows how worthless is Powell.

FOX News is headlining (and linked by Drudge accordingly) that “…POWELL TO ENDORSE OBAMA”.
THEN you read the article and way down in the heart of the piece, the statements by Powell’s spokesperson saying she/he “adamently denies” such endorsement (also denies speaking commitment at the Democrats’ convention, endorsing Obama).
FOX wouldn’t publish my comments about such, by the way, which were as homogoneous as store-bought vanilla ice cream.
An important element here, though, is why Bill Kristol is being featured in this particular case. Kristol has himself declared himself to be “a Marxist” so it’s peculiar that Powell is being used like this by Kristol and Kristol-promoters.
All due respect to Kristol, his politics are not supportable by many Conservatives (but perhaps that’s the point).
IF Powell does later come forth with, indeed, “endorsing Obama,” I’m perplexed to a point of irritation. IT just seems that most who are endorsing Obama are doing so for (1.) racial exclusivity or supremacy reasons [or both], and (2.) for-to-align with interests who oppose U.S. defense and sovereignity.
While Powell COULD be (1.), he seems to be in conflict with (2.). If he is not, then, we’ve all been fooled for a long time.
After “Susan Rice”’s (*) latest screed, however, I think there is more militancy to this “Black” “theology” than some of us are comfortable admitting. We appear as a nation to have been harboring very anti-American interests (and persons) and employing them in very high places. This bothers me.
(*) As explained previously on this blog and in my own site, “Susan Rice” as current advisor to Obama and former member of Bill Clinton’s cabinet, is not ME (Suzy Rice a/k/a Susan Elizabeth Rice), nor do I know “Susan Rice” nor have any desire to know her, after reading what she’s about, from her own statements.

This is all just a distraction since it appears that Obama’s 16 month time line for troop withdrawls in Iraq have been shot to HE!!.
So much for that Maliki endorsement.
Iraq minister: US troops will pull out in three years under deal
It notes that the next administration can revisit this agreement in 1 to 2 years, but after watching Obama shift around so much on Iraq and just about everything else,he will not want to go through the trouble of drafting another
agreement.
Plus,he has the only platform the democrats have had in the last 8 years with being able to blame Bush for any problems due to this agreement well into his Presidency(if he is elected President).
Obama is not going to risk low approval ratings by letting all the success we have achieved in Iraq go to he!! during his administration(if he is elected President)

highhopes on August 13, 2008 at 10:40 PM
So thanks to Bush’s Affirmative Action, we had an incompetent SecState. Now we find out just how AA Powell was, if he could possibly support Obama.
Disgusting.
Spartacus on August 13, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Now let’s not revise history here. McCain’s idiot supporters are doing enough of that to prop up their claims that he doesn’t loathe Republicans.
Colin Powell was part of the pre-election package that was released to counter claims that a governor of Texas with no national experience could deal with international affairs. At the time, Powell could have easily taken a spot on the national GOP ticket through his own popularity. It was gravitas, not diversity, which put Powell in the job of SECSTATE.
Powell did a lousy job, refusing to travel much in a job where travel is sorta expected. He was also disloyal to the administration by allowing them to take the heat for a leak from his own inner circle. But none of this had anything to do with his race- just like Condi Rice is an effective SECSTATE without any regard to race.
So if Powell’s endorsement is seen as a black thing, then it speaks volumes as to how far behind the Dems are from the pre-McCain GOP when it comes to race issues. These days, who knows with a liberal at the top of the ticket that should include a Republican.

Kristol’s world view is not mine either but he is not medicated. He has a lot of insider friends, because he is an insider.
When Kristol tells me the solution to America’s illegal immigration problem he is telling me what his backroom buddies want. When Kristol passes on this rumor about Powell, it didn’t come from his grocer. He probable doesn’t interact with his food suppliers.
If he is relaying a rumor, it is a rumor high up the ladder.

What reasons will he cite as endorsing Obama? The same that other black men have when they call in to conservative radio talk shows? “As a black man, I have to.”
Powell can’t really see eye to eye with O on most of his policies. Go ahead and vote for his blackness if you must, but don’t pretend you have other reasons to encourage others to do so as well by endorsing him.
O’s a fraud, Powell knows it, and would be a total sell-out to endorse him.

Can this country afford to see how bad Powell can screw up AGAIN!
We had no one coming in through the north in Iraq because of this guys incompetence.

I really hate threads like these.
Some rumor comes out that Powell might vote for Obama, or Condi doesn’t say in harsh enough terms that she isn’t voting for Obama, which automatically gives people the impression she will (just cause she’s black), and all of a sudden, they’re the racists.
These are all just rumors.
Maybe they’re true, maybe they’re not, but people only believe them because Powell and Rice are black and for really no other reason.
For those of you who say “black is thicker than water.” Really think about what you’re saying.
1. Blacks tend to vote Democrat by an overwhelming majority in EVERY election, not just this one.
2. This means that they’ve voted against many Republicans, even those who are black (and even a few Democrats who are black when you’re talking about primaries).
3. Not all black people are voting for Obama; we of all people should know this as there are several staunch conservatives who are black who post here regularly.
4. This is all just speculation. Why are people so quick to call them both racists based on nothing but speculation?
5. Even if either or both end up voting for him, as many have already said, they’re not exactly conservatives anyway. So it’s entirely possible that they’d just be voting their ideology rather than their skin color.
People already consider us racists. It really does nothing to change that image when we’re so quick to jump on the black conservatives as soon as there’s even a hint that they won’t tow the party line.

This should be a bumper sticker.

Would anybody be surprised if Colin Powell DID endorse Obama?
Powell is and has been pretty much a phony conservative for a number of years. He may have been good as a general, but forget about him in political circles. He’s a typical political opportunist. I have no faith in him politically. Thank goodness he never became that hypothetically “great” Republican candidate. What a mistake that would have been.
Its a shame that Colin Powell would endorse Obama for one reason, and one reason alone. Anyone care to guess?
