Well, technically, since it has the indefinite article “Al” before it, it means in Arabic, “The Egyptian”, as “Misr” is Arabic for “Egypt”, and “Misri” means “Egyptian” and “Al Misri” means “the Egyptian”, but that’s just technically, and nitpicking….

Not many days ago we were excoriating the Pakistanis for failing to crack down on the terrorists hiding amongst the hill tribes of NW Pakistan. What changed?

It would be interesting to hear the inside scoop. But in any case, this is a welcome development. I would not be surprised to hear that the US has worked out a deal with the Pakistanis to squeeze the terrorists from both sides of the border, using intel we can give them from drones and satellites.

Wouldn’t it be nice if George W. Bush, before he leaves office, could hold up the scalp of Osama and say, “We got him”?

Even nicer if it happened before November 4th.

Disagreed. I view it as the major failure of senior management. This kind of turnover in any organization will just kill you.

How are they going to secure financing for expansion if senior management is suspect?

One effect of the “war on terror” is a new zeitgeist that it’s not cool to be in Al Qaeda. There certainly was an idea, on the left it seems, that we shouldn’t engage them, as it would just make them mad, and we didn’t want to do that. Just respect them, because many of their grievances are legitimate, and keep out of their hair, and everything will be ok. Well, Bush hasn’t done that. He’s done the opposite. The old saw that that part of the world only understands force, who knows. But we’re all learning that to be in Al Qaeda often means a permanent thermostat setting at room temperature.
