New DNC ad: “Exxon John”; Update: DNC responds

posted at 11:25 am on August 12, 2008 by Allahpundit

Noteworthy for several reasons: It’s a rare show of creativity by a Democratic ad team, it alludes in its choice of music to another goofy political ad that only news junkies like you and me will know, and of course it’s brazenly dishonest in throwing stones at McCain when St. Obama’s taken more money from Exxon employees this year than Maverick has. “Chevron John” could have worked — except that Obama’s taken more money from their employees too. “ConocoPhillips John” would at least have been accurate, but it just doesn’t have the same ring, does it?

That’s the only dishonesty here either; note the suggestion in the lyrics that McCain opposes alternative fuels.

Update: A bit of equal time in the interests of fairness — the DNC says it’s only true that Obama outraised McCain among oil employees if you exclude the RNC/DNC combined totals. From their press guy:

McCain Voted Against Renewable and Alternative Energy repeatedly while in the Senate.

McCain Voted Nine Times Against Tax Incentives For Renewable Or Alternative Energy. [2006 Senate Vote #42, 3/14/2006; 2005 Senate Vote #158, 6/28/2005; 2004 Senate Vote #89, 5/11/2004; 2002 Senate Vote #94, 4/25/2002; 2002 Senate Vote #91, 4/25/2002; 2002 Senate Vote #77, 3/21/2002; 2001 Senate Vote #125, 5/21/2001; 1999 Senate Vote #246, 7/30/1999; 1992 Senate Vote #150, 7/23/1992]

McCain Voted Three Times Against Renewable Energy Mandates. McCain repeatedly voted against establishing standards for renewable energy production. [2005 Senate Vote #141, 6/16/2005; 2002 Senate Vote #55, 3/21/2002; 2002 Senate Vote #50, 3/14/2002]

McCain Raised More From Big Oil:

$56,361: Combined amount McCain and the RNC have raised from Exxon employees
$42,808: Combined amount Obama and the DNC have raised from Exxon employees

$204,461: Total McCain/RNC combined contributions from Exxon, Chevron & BP employees
$94,221: Total Obama/DNC combined contributions from Exxon, Chevron & BP employees

79%: percent of Exxon employee contributions that go to GOP
74%: percent of Chevron employee contributions that go to GOP
57%: percent of BP employee contributions that go to GOP

$1,332,033: Amount McCain has raised from Oil and Gas industry employee
$394,465: Amount Obama has raised from Oil and Gas Industry employee

$2.1 million: Amount McCain and the RNC together have raise from Oil and Gas industry since Jan. 2007***

3-to-1: “overall, McCain’s campaign has gotten three times more money from the industry than Obama’s has — $1.3 million compared to about $394,000.”

3: number of Republican Presidential candidates who received more money from Oil & Gas Industry than Barack Obama (McCain, Giuliani, Romney)

*** McCain Has Raised More Than $2.1 Million From The Oil And Gas Industry, Including More Than $1.1 Million In The Month Of June. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, John McCain received $1,039,768 in contributions from the oil and gas industry between January 2007 and May 2008 – a figure which dwarfs any other presidential candidates’ oil industry money. In addition, the Washington Post reported that “campaign contributions from oil industry executives to Sen. John McCain rose dramatically in the last half of June, after the senator from Arizona made a high-profile split with environmentalists and reversed his opposition to the federal ban on offshore drilling.” According to the Post’s analysis, oil and gas industry executives and employees contributed $1.1 million to McCain and the Republican National Committee’s Victory Fund in June – $882,950 of which were donated after McCain’s June 16th announcement that he supported ending the moratorium on offshore drilling. These contributions, when combined with the $1.03 million raised by McCain prior to the month of June, indicated that he has raised more than $2.1 million from the oil and gas industry. How about “Exxon Obam”? More accurate, if not as smooth-sounding.

Er…”that’s not the only dishonesty here”?

So…if you’re one of the idiots at Exxon who has given Obambi money – for whatever bizarre reason – what do you say to this? He’s 0 for 2, here, insulting your company and calling you crooks, while also taking your money and lying about your support for McCain.

Or is logic simply not available to Obama supporters?

Shh, don’t confuse them with logic. They’ll call you a racist and say that you’re distracting people from the real issues, like Obama liking shaved ice and knowing how to swim.

Sure as night follows day, when Obama calls out a company by name, he will be found to have ties to it. I’m thinking Countrywide and Exxon here.

Democrats are stupid to speak ill of American companies for political gain.

Because that 65% doesn’t know what’s best for them, they need Nancy and Reid to show them the way and Obama to show them the Light.

How about that Obama’s strategy is to not drill for oil therefore keeping prices high and company profits high. Companies like the status quo. Especially when they’re making money.

Once upon a time, when Masterpiece Theater was worth watching, it was sponsored by MOBIL, then Exxon/Mobil and hosted by Alistair Cooke.

Exxon John is not a slur to anyone who wants to replenish our domestic oil production and supply.

I’m sure many have already chimed in about Exxon’s contributions to the DNC campaigns as well.

Exxon has always done well by me.

Whereas the DNC continually lies to me and places undeniably corrupt, incompetent and outright traitorous individuals into public office.

This country would be worse off without Exxon.

In contrast, America would be FAR, FAR better off, without the insane clown posse over at the DNC.

Get your facts straight.

It bears repeating, as we’ve reminded readers before, that oil companies themselves don’t make donations. It’s illegal under federal law for corporations to donate directly to candidates and has been since 1918.

The best defense is a good offense, and in years past the only conduit for info was the fawning MSM who would report the criticisms but have no room in the stories for the more “nuanced” information.

How about that Obama’s strategy is to not drill for oil therefore keeping prices high and company profits high. Companies like the status quo. Especially when they’re making money.

Capitalist Infidel on August 12, 2008 at 11:42 AM

ding, ding, ding, ding! Higher profit margins yee haw! And it gives the energy companies more control over folks too, just like Obama wants the government to have. So for fellow travelers who want to control other citizens’ lives, supporting Obama makes perfect sense.

Well, until he and his lib/commie friends nationalize your employer and you get to earn DMV level wages.

funky chicken on August 12, 2008 at 11:54 AM

…. Well, I guess there was that one time before 1918 that the oil companies did give money to McCain, but that was just when he was first elected to the senate.

wise_man on August 12, 2008 at 11:55 AM

“That is very, very, very, very, very funny!”

What’s funny is how Democrats demonize productive corporations, while they lionize utterly useless people like lawyers, criminals and “entertainers”.

I’m glad my candidate has a good view of American corporations. They are the key to prosperity.

Whereas the key contributors to the absolutely worthless Barack Obama, are trial lawyers – the people who continue to damage our economy and who suck billions out of our economy, while serving as an anchor on our economy.

NoDonkey on August 12, 2008 at 11:55 AM

Jack M. on August 12, 2008 at 11:56 AM

You could view this ad as the DNC giving back to Exonn. Obama got no mentions, McCain got a few (not counting all the “Johns”) but Exonn’s name must have been stated and printed 50 to 75 times.

Dave Rywall on August 12, 2008 at 11:49 AM

People give to candidates, Dave. Does Barry get money from oil employees? Well, there ya go.

By the way, Dave, do you drive a car? Do you use plastics? Do you use electricity? If oil wasn’t being produced, right now, how many things could you do in your life. A hell of a lot less, I’d wager. Now, if something can sufficiently replace oil, I’m all for it, but until then, it’s what we got.

No problem. Both the executives and the workers are people. Wanna talk lawyers next? Unions? We can play this ALL day long.

john1schn on August 12, 2008 at 12:06 PM

“contributions from high level execs vs everyday employees are very very different.”

Why is that? Is it somehow a bad thing that Americans achieve to the point that they get high paying jobs in an American corporation?

Should they be ashamed? What’s your point?

Whereas the DNC wants convicted felons to get the vote. They celebrate criminals, disease carriers, sex offenders and shiftless bums.

But corporate executives? Terrible people.

Proof positive that the Democrats will run this country into the ground if they get a chance. Productive people are demonized. Parasites are celebrated.

We can’t all be trust-fund millionaires, trophy husbands/wives, bilking trial lawyers and race baiting poverty pimps like Democrat Congressman, at some point, some American will actually have to produce something.

What’s the problem with this when 65% of the country wants to drill?

BigD on August 12, 2008 at 11:37 AM

I am just using your question as a stepping stone. The biggest problem currently is that the Republicans are treating drilling and increasing refinery capacity like they treat tax cuts and spending cuts, they only seem to be fighting hard for one, while they half ass the other.

Drilling and refinery capacity have to be in the same bill and the need for refinery capacity has to be made clear to the American people, without it we’re really just giving big oil companies land and more control over supply.

LevStrauss on August 12, 2008 at 12:08 PM

Do the Dems not understand that demonizing the oil companies hurts the economy, or is that just part of the strategy? What surprises me even more is that people that work for the oil companies continue to give money to Barry and the Dems, despite the fact that the Dems are trying to take away their jobs by going after their employers.

Rick on August 12, 2008 at 12:12 PM

You’re failing to recognize the bigger picture here — why demonize the oil companies in the first place? Talk about old partisan politics at play. Where is the Hope and Change in doing that? Hope that the oil companies go out of business so that there will be a big Change in unemployment with all those former oil company employees out of work? Or are you Hoping that attacking the oil companies will lead to more Change in rising fuel costs, which will bog down our economy even more?
