Video: Yeah, Obama is inexperienced, arrogant … and?

posted at 7:50 am on August 11, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Chris Matthews led a roundtable discussion yesterday on Barack Obama’s experience, and just to cut off the jokes, it lasted longer than 10 seconds.  In fact, Matthews himself was in rare non-tingly mode as he pressed his panel on what exactly Obama has done in his extraordinarily brief time to support his claim to bipartisanship.  Not much, as everyone around the room agreed:

Matthews himself called the question, “What has he done?”, a show-stopper. No one could point to a single effective action he has taken to cross the aisle, while everyone acknowledged that John McCain has taken actual risks to do so.  David Brooks tells the room that Republican Senators and staffers insist that Hillary Clinton works across the aisle and keeps communication open, but Obama has never bothered to do that, and both Democrats and Republicans on the Hill agree on his arrogance.

David Gregory delivers a couple of laughs while out-spinning Matthews (easy to do in this clip) by saying that Obama will have such a mandate that it won’t matter if he’s an arrogant partisan.  Hope and Change in action!  One panelist notes that Obama “hasn’t done a huge amount of anything, frankly,” which is the best assessment so far of Obama in any show conducted by Matthews.

No track record — that’s the point.

I think that the implicit point is that it is most difficult to make the case for McCain just like it was to make the case for Carter in 1980.

Matthews’ leg obviously had the day off.

Why the heck couldn’t they come to this glaringly obvious conclusion 6 months ago?

Two years into Obama’s campaign and they’re finally starting to notice that there’s nothing to this guy.

Better late than never, I guess.

AZCoyote on August 11, 2008 at 8:07 AM

The WSJ has one the most intelligent discussions that I have seen yet on the Obama. Be warned, familiarity with, Livy, Machiavelli, Aristotle and Honest Iago (Shakespeare)etc. helps.

Buyer’s remorse anyone?

Buyer’s remorse anyone?

That might occur on the first Wednesday after the first Tuesday in November.

Browncoatone on August 11, 2008 at 8:25 AM

The three top Democratic candidates had 2 years, 6 years, and 6 years of Senate experience when they announced.

All summed up, it still pales when compared to the experience of McCain.

So, the man without credentials (and therefore no record to criticize) is anointed. Lame strategery if you ask me.

Tks. Berand’s piece is great, as usual. Obama, the first woman President. Priceless.

OOPS, David Gregory, that is.

I saw an Obama supporter a few weeks back defending Obama’s lack of a track record by saying it was such a good thing that he was not beholden to a certain line of thinking or certain ideology.

That, because he has no convictions or concrete stance on the issues, ANY issues, meant that he was a true maverick and willing to listen to the people and have an open mind.

gagworthy

An arrogant partisan will find Congress to be a brick wall, no matter who’s apparently in the majority. There are ways to make people miserable.

drjohn on August 11, 2008 at 8:44 AM

Why the difference between the views expressed on this little show and Hardboil?

There are editors, managers involved that craft these opinions for the talking meatheads to spout, so there are decisions made about what goes out on the air.

benrand on August 11, 2008 at 8:45 AM

OMG… The lamestream media is soooooo lame!

sabbott on August 11, 2008 at 8:45 AM

Matthews still can’t shut up long enough for anyone to finish.

drjohn on August 11, 2008 at 8:49 AM

Obama had only been in the Senate 143 days before announcing for president. Thats comparable to the length of time it took Kerry to put himself in for three (3) Purple Hearts in oder to get his butt out of Nam. Presidential candidates do the “darnest’ things sometimes. Most of the time they “almost” get there, but never do.

volsense on August 11, 2008 at 8:50 AM

There was one time he pledged to work with McCain, only to jump ship as soon as the left wing got upset with him.

MarkTheGreat on August 11, 2008 at 8:51 AM

His many accomplishments can’t be appreciated or admited by racists. There, I said it. Someone had to.

Akzed on August 11, 2008 at 9:05 AM

The democrats will only have buyers’ remorse after Obama loses.

If they could pull off electing an arrogant hard left partisan president, their legs would get tingly — until they have to cover for his many screw-ups and a bad economy.

Right_of_Attila on August 11, 2008 at 9:14 AM

Matthews himself called the question, “What has he done?”,

I wonder if Matthews and the rest are also ready to admit how they themselves are the ones responsible for elevating and putting this empty suit where he is???

4shoes on August 11, 2008 at 9:32 AM

What mandate is that idiot referring to? Even if Obama gets elected, it’ll be by a slim margin. When GWB was elected, the media were claiming that the margin was so thin that he had no mandate. So where’s the mandate?

And the beef, for that matter??

Obama has no accomplishments? He is a world class gymnast, if flip-flopping is a legitimate category.

A LEAP OF FAITH
A LEAP OF FAITH
A LEAP OF FAITH

So what have the democrats mutated themselves to become now? Leaping Lizards? Leap Frog?. “He’s done it with VALUES, though.” Exactly what road kill toad did she let out of the bag, because I know what she meant to say, but think again exactly her words in context.

Obama’s Value Leap of Faith Blue Plate Special on Credit:
Chicken Fried Yo Mamma; pay nothing now, get nothing later, lose everything in the deal (house, home, family, nation).

Obama wants to give everybody $1,000 of oil’s “windfall” profit. Will he charge us each $1,000 when they have windfall losses?

Dufus Obama for POTUS!

Mojave Mark on August 11, 2008 at 10:24 AM

Obama may qualify as a world class flop, but don’t besmirch our Olympic team by any leap of faith entitlement as a gymnast.

Obama’s little workout mit den Deutschen Mädchen sent him to his orthopedic surgeon to work on his hip upon return stateside. Either more went on than they let on, or Obama’s chain smoking body is riddled with frailty. Because of his lifelong vices, Obama should be required to provide proof that he is cancer free, particularly checking his lungs, lymph nodes and bones. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Covering their bases.

If Hillary gets her floor vote at the DemCon and if enough supers are suffering buyers’ remorse, then they can say “We told ya so” safely.

I don’t think they’re seeing through him. I think they’re just going to a higher level of denial. They’re seeing where his pitch is weak so they’ll know where to give him more cover. And they’re figuring out which areas are too weak to be defended so they can agree that the attacks are true but counter that the whole area is not important. Precious few of them are capable of seeing thru Obama. It’s not in their nature.
