Richardson tries hard to disqualify himself as VP

Earlier, I mentioned that the strategic crisis in the Caucasus favored Bill Richardson as a running mate for Barack Obama. Almost alone among the higher-profile potential VP picks in both parties, Richardson has extensive foreign-policy experience as well as executive experience, two qualities which Obama pointedly lacks in a position that requires both. Unfortunately, Richardson’s answer on Georgia to ABC yesterday, as captured by National Journal, shows how clueless someone with experience can still be:
RICHARDSON: My view is that the United States — if we had a stronger relationship with Russia, we could exercise strong diplomacy to stop this effort against Georgia. We should immediately go to the United Nations Security Council, condemn Russia’s action, and then get the Security Council to pass a strong resolution getting the Russians to show some restraint, and possibly at the same time generate some U.N. peacekeeping troops. The problem, though, is that we don’t have the kind of influence and strength in our relationship with Russia to persuade them. This has been one of the failures of the Bush administration, failing to build a strong relationship, a mutually beneficial relationship with Russia, so we’d have the kind of influence to persuade them to stop some of these very, very dangerous efforts within their territory.
Point 1: We’ve spent the last several years watching Bush kiss up to Vladimir Putin, which has paid off on almost nothing at all — not Iraq, Iran, Darfur, not even an obvious crisis like Zimbabwe. Furthermore, the Russians first understood American intentions in the former Soviet sphere of influence when the Clinton administration intervened in the Balkans against Russia’s allies in Serbia. The US and EU rush to grant Kosovo independence this year put the icing on the cake, but the policy of adversarial relations with Moscow started long before Bush took office, and Russian enrichment with the Oil-for-Food program was one of the consequences.
Point 2: Bill Richardson knows that the UN will do nothing, because Russia has a Security Council veto. We already went through the motions at the UNSC, and Russian stopped consideration of the issue. How does Richardson propose to get the Security Council to pass a resolution condemning Russia without generating a Russian veto?
Point 3: What exactly does “strong diplomacy” mean, even outside the confines of the UN? Should we expel the Russian ambassador? Or should we issue strongly-worded memos, which to be fair, the Bush administration couldn’t even muster in the first hours of the crisis?
Point 4: As Jim Geraghty notes, the problem isn’t what Russia does “in its own territory”. The problem is that Russia has invaded someone else’s territory. After 48 hours, one would think that Richardson would have taken the trouble to check his maps. South Ossetia, by the way, hasn’t been Russian territory anyway in over 16 years, and Russia has attacked Georgia proper this weekend.
The problem in Georgia has little to do with the US, and everything to do with Russian empire. Short of war, the US cannot hem in Russian adventurism in its back yard. We could expel the Russians from the G-8, a move we should have taken long ago when we discovered their involvement in the Oil-for-Food scam. That would actually sting Russia, but it would have hurt much more a few years ago, when Russia’s economy was struggling.
Maybe Richardson is the best on foreign policy that Democrats have to offer. If so, that is a very frightening prospect.

Typical reaction of a democrat when they don’t have a constructive answer is to #1 mention another “failed policy” of the Bush admin. and then come up with some weak argument that our “relationship level” was not up to par—-another kiss-ass policy the left embraces.
The last time I checked, this nation has not been attacked by a foriegn terrorist entity for more than seven years now–the most critical policy that HAS NOT FAILED!
Rovin on August 11, 2008 at 11:15 AM
How much of our relative powerlessness here can be attributed to the media’s attempt over the last 7 years to destroy the credibility of the US President? Do you wonder if Putin’s calculations might assume that nobody in the US or anywhere else will support anything Bush might propose, because he is universally reviled, as we all know.
Keep rockin’ MSM. Oh, and die faster, please.
drunyan8315 on August 11, 2008 at 11:17 AM
Ed, Ed, Ed… You’re thinking about this all wrong…
Bill Richardson is not trying to come up with proposals that make sense or have a chance in Hell of resulting in a positive outcome. Bill Richardson is trying to provide talking points to the Obama campaign. Given a basketful of lemons, he is trying his best to make lemonade.
You have to remember that the main thrust of the Obama campaign is “George Bush screwed up and we’re not George Bush”. So each and every problem must be laid at the President’s feet, along with some minimally plausible sounding reason why Obama would not make the same mistake.
So, therefore, the crisis in Georgia must be completely blamed on a failure of Bush’s diplomacy. Also, since Obama’s perceived advantage in diplomacy is his magical ability to make our enemies love us, that failure must be based on an insufficient level of love between the US and one or both of the parties. Since the Georgians could hardly love us more without actual sexual contact, it must be based on a lack of love between the US and Russia.
Richardson can flow-chart this process out as well as anyone. His prescription here is exactly what the Obama camp will want to here. If Richardson throws this up against the wall and achieves even 10% stickage, he has made himself a heavy favorite for the VEEP nod.
gridlock2 on August 11, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I don’t think Richardson is trying to pander for your vote. This stance by no means “disqualifies” him for VP; on the contrary, this guy’s moving exactly in line with Obama’s position on this and every other foriegn policy issue: endless and utterly empty diplomacy.
logis on August 11, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Diplomacy = “We are gutless and scared so let’s beg them to stop. Or, at the very least, try to bribe them.”
GogglesPisano on August 11, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Why is this a surprise? Don’t you guys remember the debates where he said the first thing he’d do as president would be to start serious talks with “The Soviet Union”? Edwards and Obama had a look on their face like, “Ummm…wow,” but no one called him out on the gaffe.
I read an article today that said we can’t really do anything because we need Russia’s help with Iran. Can we stop kidding ourselves? Diplomacy failed because we’re dealing with thugs. Israel is going to do what needs to be done.
It’s the US and Israel, largely alone. Europe lost its “nads” long ago, our allies with a brain (e.g., Poland, England, Australia) have other issues that constrain them, and the rest of the world is filled with Mookies, Vlads, and Osamas.

Please put this guy on the ticket. He’s all flop-sweat and neck-waddle.

Atleast Richardson has one Plus in this interview. He didn’t come out and say we should have strict talks with Bob Barr over the handling of Georgia.
Rbastid on August 11, 2008 at 11:24 AM
I for one am outraged at this attack on Georgia.
How the heck did Russian forces even reach Georgia without President Bush and the Pentagon realize this was happening. Obviously this is another example of our forces spread too thin and the distractions of ill conceived wars.
I hope Huey’s on Peachtree is safe and other businesses in Buckhead. I’ve tried to call my sister in Marieta all morning and have only reached her voice mail!

Richardson isn’t making his comments so the informed public will pick them up. He’s making the comments to the vast majority of uninformed masses who will only hear:
Actual facts do not matter to morons as much as false, misleading or inaccurate sound bites.
Texas Rainmaker on August 11, 2008 at 11:35 AM
This is all right, except that he’s assiduously avoiding giving any “reason” at all that the Democrats will do a better job – even minimally. With Obama leading the way, the Democrat Party is transitioning to the logical conclusion of liberal philosophy; they are avoiding any connection to reality whatsoever.
The meme is that foreign dictators will LIKE a Democrat President better than a Republican because they’re NICER – and that’s the end of it. This is how things work in the coffee klatches that soccer moms frequent, so the Democrat tactic is to exploit that naivitae and keep them as insulated from any understanding of the real world as possible.

On the contrary, a man who doesn’t know that South Ossetia is part of Georgia and not Russia would be a perfect VP for a man who does not know how long a presidential term is, nor how many states are in the United States.

Wow. Really? Damn, when even Barack freakin’ OBAMA looks at you like you’re an idiot…. Man, that’s bad.
But, again, all the more qualification for a VP slot. Historically, most Presidential candidates are careful to choose someone who they know can never outshine them.

Haha.
Anytime someone calls for the UN security council to issue a resolution in response to any armed conflict, they are just proving they are not qualified to comment. That of course is an understatement.
They may as well suggest that we call upon the three fairies from Sleeping Beauty to descend upon Georgia and wave their wands to turn all the weapons into flowers.
I’m just tired of hearing it suggested over and over. The UN is a farce. It is completely impotent and can not deal with any conflict, let alone one involving the new Russian empire.
The scary part about all of this, is that I see so many “westerners” who are buying into the Russian’s propaganda.

Vladmir Putin had to have paused at this gamble knowing the timing wasn’t quite right; the Olympics, of course, but also: he was a mere 12 weeks away from the Democrat party lurching into veto-proof control over all 3 branches of government in the USA! All he needed to do was wait a few weeks, and he would have been able to re-launch the USSR offensive, knowing from experience that his marxist allies over here would have served up a sumptuous buffet of appeasement with those delicious little strongly-worded-united-nations-resolution appetizers!
Yes, Vlad, there was a free lunch, but you just couldn’t wait, could you, you greedy bastard.

This is all prelude. All Putin’s doing right now is taking over a county-sized plot of land – with a lien on the tiny country it’s attached to. It’s only when he uses that segment of pipeline to cut off half of Europe’s oil supply that something serious will have to be done. THAT is when he’ll need some heavy-duty appeasers running America’s foreign policy.
The Democrat meme for this election is that George Bush is “starting wars all over the place for absolutely no reason whatsoever.” Any reaction he takes to Russia’s invasion of Georgia will just be fodder for the liberal propaganda mill.
Liberals have spent the last twenty years bending over backward to support Islamic Radicals, but that is strictly a one-way love affair. Russia, on the other hand, loves exploiting their “useful idiots” almost as much as the idiots themselves love being exploited. With the stigma completely removed these days, it’s safe to say that cooperation is stronger now than it’s ever been.

So let me get this straight. There has not been a peep out of the UN yet about the russians killing civilians indiscriminately in georgia but anytime there is a push to build a security fence along our own border with mexico the un sec general starts making comments about human rights offenses. Sooo, tell me again why we are paying billions of dollars a year so a bunch of beauracrats can live it up in nyc with immunity from our laws?
