“[T]hrough centuries of European history the only constant has been that small countries, doomed by geography to lie between great powers, are destined to be the cockpit for their imperial ambitions.”

Stop it! You are making me dizzy.

Yes, in a non binary world you do. But not too often though. I think that 3 times may be the limit.
MB4 on August 12, 2008 at 2:43 AM
It would be so nice if something made sense for a change.

Then why are defending it?

Y
My choice would be against the militant muslims that want world wide domination.

I do support killing those who started shooting at the Russians. I don’t support overtaking their country, or even invading it.
freevillage on August 12, 2008 at 2:42 AM
So you support killing the Georgians but not overthrowing the Georgians?
Well its too late now huh. Now Russia is going to pay! If the Russians are stupid enough to come into Tblisi they are going to bleed like they haven’t bled since they tried their little lesson in Chechnya.
In fact they are going to wish they were back in Chechnya before this is done and I hope to god the US is right there to help. We need a little payback for the way they armed the Saddam Fedeyeen before the Iraq war.
Pay back is going to be a bitch!
elduende on August 12, 2008 at 2:52 AM
OK, the Russians and the Muslims. That means we have got one left. We better save it for latter.
MB4 on August 12, 2008 at 2:54 AM
McCain was right. You look into his eyes and see three letters….KGB!

Alright, 3am. Time to turn in. Remember, kids:
Invasion – bad, no question
Shooting at Russian soldiers – bad
Winning “democratic” elections with 96% of the vote – bad.
Night.
freevillage on August 12, 2008 at 3:02 AM
Well we need to help the Georgians turn Tblisi into a meat grinder for the Russian armored columns. A Russian graveyard in Tblisi will help bleed these arrogant pigs. We need a little payback for their arming of the Saddam Fedayeen with Kornets in the Iraq war.
elduende on August 12, 2008 at 3:04 AM
It was bad strategically, but whether or not it was inherently “bad” remains to be seen, as it depends on the circumstances. Gaging by Russia’s readiness to invade it seems likely that Georgia may only be guilty of taking the bait and falling into Russia’s trap.
A few possible motivations might be to halt or increase falling oil prices or to position themselves better in relation to Iran.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if it turns out that Russia has fallen into Georgia’s trap? Not very likely, though.

We’ll see. This ain’t over yet.
elduende on August 12, 2008 at 3:51 AM
As far as I’ve seen the Georgian army has retreated in good order which means they are trading space for time. We’ll see, what the next few hours hold. The Russians have to collapse the Georgian government somehow but I don’t think the Georgians will oblige them.
The initiative is still with the Russians if they don’t beg off now short of Tblisi then I think its on for real. We’re not going to allow the Russians to do this. We will respond.

Russians move 2 SS-21 Medium Range Ballistic Missile Launchers into South Ossetia

I’m sure those are there for humanitarian reasons.

For the Russia apologists… here is an article that was written the day before the invasion started

Maverick is the man to deal with Russia. More now than ever, it’s Maverick.
Hening on August 12, 2008 at 9:16 AM
It’s fascinating how Russia, the ‘good’ friend of China, has taken the world attention away from the Olympics and totally toward itself.
“This is Big”, as Mr. Bean would say.
