Edwards on Nightline: You know who else cheated? John McCain

And of course, no sooner does he drop the tu quoque on Maverick than he qualifies it by noting, with exquisite remorse, that he doesn’t want to drag other people into this. Here too, as in so much of his past nonsense, he proves my favorite liberal right: Silky Pony is indeed a silky phony. Ironically, though, the McCain comparison explains why his career really isn’t over. Infidelity doesn’t kill political ambitions anymore; it sends them into a coma. He’ll wake up from it as the scandal recedes with time, unless the left decides that a guy willing to gamble the party’s fate by cheating while he’s running for president isn’t quite in the same boat as the other 60 percent or so of men who stray.

You’ll find the McCain segment about a third of the way through this recap reel. And no, reading the official transcript’s not a fair substitute for once. Not only did ABC decide inexplicably not to publish a complete version, but the selections they chose don’t include the McCain bit or various other interesting details (like the fact that Edwards says the affair was “short”) — although Bob Woodruff’s insistence that Elizabeth Edwards is “probably the most admired and beloved person in this country” is thankfully included. As for Edwards’s performance, it’s vintage Silky. Turns out he didn’t just betray his wife, he betrayed the poor son of a country mill worker he really is at heart, his huge mansion and ego notwithstanding. He also heroically asked Elizabeth not to appear with him for the interview, because after a year of siphoning off Absolute Moral Authority from her illness to help his campaign, he suddenly decided it wouldn’t be right to use her as a “shield.” Tapping his heart and claiming she’s in there “all the time” even when she’s not physically present is an especially Silky touch considering that the whole reason so many of his supporters feel hurt by the news is because they’re no longer sure how true that is.

The most interesting bit has to do with the meeting at the Hilton and the payments made to Hunter by Fred Baron, a.k.a. the Best Friend Anyone’s Ever Had. Listening to Edwards describe how it was Bob McGovern who requested the meeting, how Hunter was concerned about her situation, and how — in a moment of surprising candor — he admits he went (reluctantly) to the hotel not because he was worried about the poor dear but because “I wanted her not to tell the public,” it sure sounds like they were shaking him down. One of the Enquirer’s editors told CNN yesterday, in fact, that Edwards had met with Hunter at the same hotel a month earlier; remember too that the paper had unusually specific details about the July meeting, right down to which rooms McGovern and Hunter were staying in. Either there’s a tipster at the Hilton’s front desk or, more likely given how long the paper’s been getting info about this story, Hunter herself or someone close to her is helping them build a case against Edwards to ratchet up the pressure. Maybe by July Hunter had finally become convinced that she wasn’t going to get whatever it is she wanted from him and decided to help the Enquirer set up a sting (note that the editors don’t deny in the CNN interview that they pay their sources)? Or maybe she wanted him to see his kid. Or, just maybe, I’m totally wrong and she’s completely innocent and wanted nothing more than a little hand-holding from her ex to cope with the pressure from the tabloids. But it sure is interesting how readily Edwards agrees to the possibility raised by Woodruff that Fred Baron’s paying her off in order to “help” him, huh?

Good work by ABC in pursuing the story, however belatedly. Between Stephanopoulos having the stones to ask Obama tough questions at that debate that weren’t, ahem, “substantive” enough for other networks and Charlie Gibson’s willingness to report on good news from Iraq when CBS and NBC can’t be bothered, they’re our best bet for network news anymore. More highlights from the interview on their video page.

Any child knows that grown-ups don’t accept “everybody else does it” as an excuse.

I’m sorry–I overreacted in anger after reading that Edwards brought up McCain. After actually watching the segment, I don’t see any reason to condemn Edwards any more. He seems to have fully repented, so all I can say is “go & sin no more”.

jgapinoy on August 9, 2008 at 2:23 PM

This story just makes my blood boil. McCain and Giuliani got unfairly slimed by front page stories in the NYT and on all major broadcast networks about either affairs that didn’t happen (McCain) or alleged abuses of power associated with affairs we already knew about (Giuliani)… Silky gets a pass.

As an aside, ABC’s bravery comes at a price. Variety reported a while back that ABC was denied the right to participate in ANY of the presidential or vice presidential debates this year, pretty much because ABC had the stones to ask Obama tough questions. That’s going to be a significant ratings hit for ABC’s news organization. Also look for Democrats to start quietly boycotting ABC just as they publicly boycotted Fox News.

Hilarious. Except for the fact that Democrats & Hollywood are the only groups that make people bigger stars after their sexcapades.

The most delicious part about this whole affair, is not only is he bald-faced lying thru his teeth about the timing of the affair, his paternity, the length of the affair, the payoffs with campaign cash, etc., but someone this arrogant and self-absorbed, HAD to have done this before.

So, watching this on TV, his other mistresses will soon be selling the stories to the NI for cash, in order to hammer this scum bag.

Then, the truth will come out about all.

And, because of the Anti-American/Pro-Jihadi Leftist Delusional Democratic Traitor Nutbag elites, have already set the “standard” with their slavish defense of the scummy Clinton Rapes/Affairs/Sexual Harassments/etc., Elizabeth Edwards CANNOT divorce the clown….she has to ride it out, and pull a Hillary!

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Et Tu Democrats….Et Tu….you destroyed the moral fiber of this country with your butt-kissing of the Arkansas Scum, now you’ve been hoisted on your own petard…..

Watched a segment on CNN yesterday where all the callers were lamenting their betrayal because they BELIEVED in this schmuck.

Seriously. How stupid/gullible do you have to be to have ever believed in this guy. I am amazed that he ever won a case. He opens his mouth and I immediately want to move away with my hand on my wallet.

America1st on August 9, 2008 at 2:28 PM

This whole story is a non-issue because *tapping heart* Elizabeth was with him while he cheated and she let him do it. I mean, if she was there *tapping heart* and said nothing…this is really all her fault.

John, you need to flip this. This is so totally your wife’s fault. *tapping heart*

During his next news conference, Silky will be saying “Yes, I had an affair, but I did not have sex with that woman!”

I’m not really a religious person whatsoever, so I can’t really answer this question, but how does Edwards know God has forgiven him?

Just saying.

DanStark on August 9, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Democrats & Hollywood are the only groups that make people bigger stars after their sexcapades.

…which is why I’m no more likely to support Bubba/Barney/Jessuh/Edwards/Hart in anything political than I am to go to a flick with Bradgelina in it.

Loser.

Black Adam on August 9, 2008 at 2:38 PM

Edwards maybe a bigger zero than Obama if that is possible. The worst part of this whole mess is Elizabeth coming out defending adultery as nobody’s business. The fact her husband was delusioned enough to run for president should not be effected by the fact he has no morals. I pity Elizabeth for being so intellectually deficit.

Not all trial lawyers are like this guy – just wanted to set the record straight.

HawaiiLwyr on August 9, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Exactly. A perennial question – as Edwards is hardly the first and rather unlikely the last sheister to get a public hearing and attract a sizable following – but the one the Dems ended up with doesn’t pass my personal you’ve-got-to-be-kidding test either… So go figure.

Maybe, just maybe, this whole affair will open a few eyes in Democrat land, not just about a few individual leaders and their feet of clay, but about the whole collective con job.

I am ashamed this clown lives in my state, I can at least take comfort in the fact I never have nor ever would vote for him. He invokes McCain but not Bill’s numerous lapses in judgement. I hope for an investigation that finds him guilty of misusing campaign funds but considering the party he’ll probably will receive some kind of award. On a side note John, I’m going through some tough times myself, maybe you can talk to your wonderful friend, Fred and get him to help me out too. I don’t need $1500.00 a month, a couple would be appreciated.

Allah, I sent you guys an email yesterday about the interview NE editor David Perel on Hannity’s radio show. Also, NE editor Barry Levine was just on Foxnews a little while ago.

Both editors are saying that they are 100% sure that Edwards is the father, and that he orchestrated the payoffs, which, if true, means that Edwards’ “confession” last night was just one more big lie.

Also, Woodruff said to Edwards that he’d heard that Edwards has several recent meeting with Hunter, and Edwards only talked about the one in which he got caught. Unfortunately, Woodruff didn’t follow up and ask him why he made those other visits.

I find it very comforting when people who have gone out of their way to damage others for their own gain give such good reasons to loathe them. Then I don’t suffer nearly as much guilt for the bad feelings.

Beto Ochoa on August 9, 2008 at 2:50 PM

There are many honorable people in politics who aren’t cheaters – but the ones who rise to the top have a disproportionate problem with staying true to their spouses: FDR, Bill Clinton, John Kennedy, Woodrow Wilson, Lyndon Johnson to name a few. Even the “honorable” John McCain cheated on his first wife with his current wife Cindy – earning him the ire of the Reagans, who excommunicated him from their circle of friends.

On H & C last night KP argued for Edwards, saying that this only mattered when one looks for a husband, but not when choosing a president. Her article is a huge, and good, attempt at salvage. But she couldn’t help herself but bring in the “McCain cheated on ex wife” mantra.

McCain probably cheated, but his ex is claiming the marriage was over when he came back and that they would have separated one way or another. She stands by him for the election and they are still friends. Why not keep that story to a stand-alaone, and not equivalent to this one?

Or, just maybe, I’m totally wrong and she’s completely innocent and wanted nothing more than a little hand-holding from her ex to cope with the pressure from the tabloids.

That w/b the longest “hand-holding from her ex”, in the middle of the night, until 2:30a.m., ever.

Entelechy on August 9, 2008 at 2:53 PM

although Bob Woodruff’s insistence that Elizabeth Edwards is “probably the most admired and beloved person in this country”

Not by me. No admiration, no lovin’ here. I do not wish her ill, in fact, I wish her good health, but I cannot admire her.

CrimsonFisted on August 9, 2008 at 2:58 PM

“Gawd! After viewing that I feel like I need a long hot shower to scrub the off the slime.” Silenced Majority.

Yes indeed. The man’s a slug. That comparison may be demeaning to slugs, but it is what it is. . . and yes, a hot shower after listening to all that self-serving goo is really needed.

But, he’s got grat company – the MSM. The NYT can’t seem to quite figure out where they went wrong. That wretched rag cannot go under soon enough. As for the comparisons to McCain, Edwards misses a very important pair of distinctions, as do most of his apologists on blogs and in the MSM:

1. McCain was not a candidate for public office 30 years ago when he had his affair. I don’t condone his behavior, but –

2. McCain has not lied about the affair. OK, I’m sure it’s not one of the things in his life he’s really proud about, but he didn’t make a public campaign on his overwhelming morality, and then let it leak out that his first marriage fell apart when he got home from Viet Nam.

3. The media, by and large, has showed that they are not in the news business, but in the public relations business for Democratic partisan hacks. I think I’ll go see what the National Enquirer has to say about the war in Georgia. I suspect they might have more accurate coverage than the NYT. Come to think of it, maybe I can encourage our local library to cancel the NYT and subscribe to the Times of London, which still understands that news includes stuff discomforting to politicians of any party.

***McCain has not lied about the affair. ***
Orson Buggeigh on August 9, 2008 at 2:58 PM

McCain’s Wikipedia entry quotes a 2007 Arizona Republic interview of him concerning his 1976(!) affair:

McCain said that he “had not shown the same determination to rebuild (his) personal life” as he had shown in his military career, and that “marriages can be hard to recover after great time and distance have separated a husband and wife. We are different people when we reunite….But my marriage’s collapse was attributable to my own selfishness and immaturity more than it was to Vietnam, and I cannot escape blame by pointing a finger at the war. The blame was entirely mine.”

I’d say that’s pretty candid and “straight talk.” Also remember that he took care of his first wife and his daughter by her even after their marriage was over.

Outlander on August 9, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Not to parse infidelity too finely, but wasn’t McCain separated from his first wife before he met Cindy/2nd wife? Just have a vague idea that’s true. Cindy gives an amusing account of their initial meeting at some formal occasion. He chased her around the buffet table. I’ve never heard McCain speak of his current wife with any affection at all. I wonder what’s up with that.

Paul-Cincy on August 9, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Okay, I know that McCain had an affair. Can someone recap how it became public and how McCain addressed it? I think that has a lot to do with career resurrections and it would be nice to compare.

Typical slimy, gutless liberal . . . trying to justify his behavior by saying that others have also done it. One problem here John, his wife didn’t have a terminal disease and he didn’t lie to the world about it. Why don’t you cry for us, that should impress some of your whiny, liberal friends.

rplat on August 9, 2008 at 3:23 PM

Man. That guy could sell ice to Eskimos. He should open up a used car dealership if he doesn’t get back into profiting handsomely from other peoples tragedy.

I wonder if his dear wife Elizabeth, who’s in his heart “all the time” *tap tap tap*, was in there every time Reille Hunter was riding his Silky Pony.

That dude has no conscience, no shame. No wonder he was such a good lawyer.

Guys,
I’ve just spent a good half hour of my life over at the DKos (believe me it wasn’t easy. Just doing the job that most conservatives won’t do), reading every comment there on the “Edward’s affair” hoping to find the usual stuff I think we would expect to find.

However, out of approx. 120 comments on the subject around 90 to 95 per cent of them were not defending the “snake”. I was somewhat surprised myself but most of the KKids are without mercy just pummeling the “reptilian one” for what he did.

Go figure.

Over.

1GooDDaDDy on August 9, 2008 at 3:26 PM

McCain had numerous affairs, and the timeline on when his first marriage ended and the courtship to his second one began is muddled, to put it charitably. (Was he separated at the time? He says so. Others are less clear.)

Their friends the Reagans dropped him and offered his ex a job on the campaign and then another job at the White House.

This happened before McCain went into politics.

He tended to bring it up himself to his journalist friends — get it out early, express remorse, take responsibility, etc. Also, he’s representing a more libertarian part of the country — Arizona.

It’s definitely not something to be proud of, but it ended up not being a career-killer.

tigerinexile on August 9, 2008 at 3:27 PM

To add to what I just said –

McCain could overcome it, I think, because his betrayal was a purely personal one & not part of his public persona.

It’ll be more difficult for Edwards.

Still, don’t count him out.

tigerinexile on August 9, 2008 at 3:29 PM

I’m happy he’s playing games (re/ paternity). Gives The Enquirer more to uncover and keeps people interested. He doesn’t realize this?

American society dictates that Edwards’ life be crushed, so get on with the business of destroying him

There’s no point in him bringing up McCain’s infidelity – nobody cares that he had an affair(s). Somehow it just doesn’t matter.

Dave Rywall on August 9, 2008 at 3:36 PM

Edwards’s pimp Fred Baron is a partner in the law firm that advertises heavily to victims of mesotheliomia on cable news. I won’t bother here with the questions about Baron’s ethics, which abound.

I just think he and Edwards, with their expertise at sucking money out of idiot jurors, are providing delicious irony by spending what may ultimately amount to millions of dollars for commodity Edwards could have bought for a few hundred dollars a pop.

Dave, it’s not “American society” which destroyed him, it’s himself, better yet, his little thingey and his hypocrisy is thicker than molasses. But, heh, there’s hope. Ameica loves a redeemed sinner, especially your side, which glorifies them.

Edwards, similar to Al Gore and his carbon credits, needs to start a few fake companies, selling penis credits. This will make him super rich, potentially bring him a Nobel prize, and reduce his guilt factor.

The first company he can create is

Redeeming Phalli – “John me in cleaning up your laaf; there’s always hope. Never give up, never give up, never give up, as maa good friend Bill Clinton said”.

What a riot you and the media are. I’ll be here when the next conservative frucks up, to see how much indulgence you’re capable of.

You are assuming he is telling the truth about her knowing. I say she did not. She is just supporting his version of the story. Why I do not know. No matter how hard one tries or how much money is spent, the truth eventually comes out. The difference seems to be how much outrage is raised depending on the guilty party.

At the moment, we’re seeing the latter.

The Edwards two young children have been coping with a mother having chemo and stage four cancer. I have never liked Elizabeth Edwards but I think she is stuck with him. I hardly think it compares to KNOCKING UP your /wink*wink*/ employee DURING your PRESIDENTIAL campaign WHILE dragging your poor TERMINALLY ILL wife around the country to garner some sympathy votes.

Hell, Edwards almost makes Clenis look like Ward Cleaver!

NightmareOnKStreet on August 9, 2008 at 4:42 PM

A former Edwards campaign staff member professes to be the father.

A campaign worker getting the boss’ sloppy seconds seems implausible to me.

myamphibian on August 9, 2008 at 4:44 PM

He needs to stay in the public’s eye since he is the allegorical figure of the current Democratic party.

As one man to another, anyone that would cheat on his wife, after using her cancer for his benefit is a total double-dog scum bag.

Hening on August 9, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Dave Rywall – getting your cancer-stricken wife to lie for you for two years seems like a pretty good reason to have your “life crushed”. Maybe he can channel a few dead babies and make a few million more.

tanmany2k on August 9, 2008 at 4:26 PM

– Sorry, but I disagree. She lied to the American people while Edwards ran for president. She was willing to let this trash become the Commander-in-Chief. Whatever her reasoning, she’s lost any and all moral authority.

Squiggy on August 9, 2008 at 4:52 PM

A lot of McCain’s affairs took place while his wife was recovering from a near-fatal car accident.

Damaged good, I guess?

alphie on August 9, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Oh, look. The toddlers here.

Squiggy on August 9, 2008 at 4:57 PM

Hey, alphie. do you think Ms Hunter has a decent sexual harassment case against Silky? He was her employer and perhaps she felt pressured. I suppose only time will tell.

It’ll be funny if AP turns out to be right and it’s the skanky mistress who’s been giving all the hot (and accurate) tips to the NE.
What delicious karmic justice when the betrayer is himself betrayed.

Oh, this is good:

And I have to tell you all something, my friends on this side of the aisle, that wasn’t a hard thing for me to do. I think this President has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen.

-February 19, 1999 Sen. John Edwards on President Bill Clinton

carbon_footprint on August 9, 2008 at 5:23 PM

He lies so well. Let’s elect him!

I’m glad the McCain stuff is out there now to. You have to get in front of stuff like that. George W’s drunk driving was put out the weekend before the election and darn near got us Al Gore as POTUS.

Mojave Mark on August 9, 2008 at 5:24 PM

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. This does not mean that I want President Silky. It has nothing to do with a 2006 film-for-sex scandal or adultry. This is strictly voter’s business. Silky is not to be trusted.

Elizabeth Edwards is speaking out now, on Daily Kos.

And while all the previous diaries on DKos regarding the Edwards affair have been deleted and diarist accounts banned, since Edwards came out and admitted the affair, the newer Edwards affair diaries are filled with loathing for John Edwards… until Elizabeth Edwards diary was posted.

Now they’re fawning over John Edwards in the comments of Elizabeth Edwards’ diary and saying what a great guy he really is, what a great Attorney general he will make, etc ad blah blah blah.

Wow. The Kos kids sure are a lot of whack job two-faced hypocrites.

SilverStar830 on August 9, 2008 at 5:41 PM

You can tell when John Edwards is lying…whenever his lips move.

GarandFan on August 9, 2008 at 5:47 PM

What a despicable little man!!! He seems to think it make it alright because he’s not the only one who does it after all.

jeanie on August 9, 2008 at 5:49 PM

American society dictates that Edwards’ life be crushed, so get on with the business of destroying him
There’s no point in him bringing up McCain’s infidelity – nobody cares that he had an affair(s). Somehow it just doesn’t matter.

It’s so awesome that I don’t have to go out of my way and read the liberal blogs for the opposing point of view when we have our very own contributions from these two here.

They are like Amway salesmen for the left, making hourly deliveries of old, lame, debunked and tu quoque right to our door.

wise_man on August 9, 2008 at 5:52 PM

However, out of approx. 120 comments on the subject around 90 to 95 per cent of them were not defending the “snake”. I was somewhat surprised myself but most of the KKids are without mercy just pummeling the “reptilian one” for what he did.

Go figure.

Over.

They beat the “Big O” himself…the shills.

Over

SilverStar830 on August 9, 2008 at 5:41 PM

The left wasn’t angry at Edwards for having the affair. They were angry at Edwards for lying about the affair and leading them on… That’s a different kind of anger, and one that’s more easily allayed by redirection. That’s why you saw Elizabeth Edwards come out so quickly with a Kos posting to tell the troops to refocus their attention on Bushhitler’s disciple, McCain.

Outlander on August 9, 2008 at 5:55 PM

Is it true that Elizabeth Edwards came out fighting for her “husband”? Good heavens, while I’m sorry the woman is incurably ill with cancer, she appears to be incurably ill in other ways. Poor soul!!

jeanie on August 9, 2008 at 5:59 PM

“…but it’s not about other people. It’s about me.”

Yes John, we know. That’s part of the problem.

Diogenes of Sinope on August 9, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Another poster on another site proposed the very certain fact, that had the mainstream press investigated and reported on this story as they would any Republican then Silky wouldn’t have been in the primary hunt and wouldn’t have helped steal the nomination from Hillary and thus the mainstream media covered up and handed the nomination to the Obammunist at the expense of Hillary.

Hillary fans everywhere should be outraged and demand to know who is this guy the press is so in the tank for? Hillary was right on the vast left wing conspiracy!
