Video: Nice movie career you’ve got there, wingnut; it’d be a shame if something happened to it

posted at 9:21 pm on August 8, 2008 by Allahpundit

One ominous comment from an entertainment writer does not a blacklist make, but then it’s more than just one comment that has people like Voight and Breitbart concerned. Consider this a bookend to Ed’s post this morning about Tom Matzzie’s strongarm tactics; given the media attention to that story and to this one, I’d say we’re already well into backfire territory on each. As for Voight’s allusion near the end to hearing more from Hollywood conservatives in the next few months, I assume he means David Zucker’s upcoming movie. The negative reviews are doubtless already being written, but read Stephen Hayes’s piece on it in the Standard if you haven’t yet. I hope it does well because this may be the last paycheck the cast sees for awhile. Click the image to watch.

Update (Ed)I interviewed Myrna Sokoloff, co-writer of Voight’s upcoming movie with David Zucker, An American Carol, yesterday.  She and I discussed the future prospects of the cast, which includes Dennis Hopper, Kelsey Grammer, and Kevin Farley, as well as her own hopes for a career.  The movie comes out October 3rd.

I heard Voight on Mark Levin last week and he was saying there are times when some very well known Hollywood actors take him aside and whisper things like “I am with you.” and “I am so glad that I am not alone.”

You know Hollywood is really messed up when people have to be covert because they believe in values.

carbon_footprint on August 8, 2008 at 9:26 PM

Well,Hollywood’s current formula – hate America first – isn’t making them any money, so Voight really has not a lot to loose.

Topsecretk9 on August 8, 2008 at 9:27 PM

See? When, every once in a while, Angelina Jolie says or does something sane, it’s Jon Voight’s genes doing the work.

Jon Voight rocks! He’s staying strong. I’m gonna go rent “Runaway Train” again this weekend in his honor…for the 20th time.

Oh, and Jeffrey Wells..what was the last blockbuster that tool starred in? Or Produced? Or had anything to do with? Yeah…he’s a professional ‘critic and Obama supporter’. I hope he can do the Obama salute correctly at the next rehersal…

I refuse to see or spend one penny on any anti-American, anti-Iraq war, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jane Fonda, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Susan Sarandon, Alec Baldwin film or TV appearance, so I’m not throwing stones from my glass house at some liberal “blacklister”. I have my own, thank-you very much.

Aww, Hollyweirdos are upset that Voight offended their wittle Obama. Celebrities are constantly shilling for Obama, but Voight criticizes him and he’s attacked. Tolerance for international dictators, but not for conservatives.

That being said, there’s an interesting list of known righty celebs: Adam Sandler, Kelsey Grammar, Dan Whitney, Kevin Farley, Dennis Hopper, James Woods, Angie Harmon, Gary Sinise, Christopher McDonald, Melissa Gilbert, Harry Sloan (MGM Chair), Jerry Bruckheimer, Kirk Kerkorian, Lorne Michaels, Rip Torn, Dick Van Patten, Robert Duvall, Tom Selleck, Sarah Michelle Gellar…

They are in good company with some of the greats, the real movie stars of the 50s and 60s.

That’s what I think of as movie stars anyway, today they just aren’t the same.

People like John Wayne, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Jimmy Stewart, Charlton Heston…

Plus, all the stars who say they are libertarian are really just conservatives afraid to actually say it (except Bill Maher).

There are still a ton of right-leaning stars, I don’t understand why they have to “go underground”. IS the SAG, the producers, other unions? Who knows?

Clint Eastwood, Arnold, Drew Carey, Bruce Willis, Ron Silver, James Earl Jones!, John Malkovich, Jimmy Walker… it’s just fun to list them.

Oh and can’t forget Chuck Norris.

And many more, I am sure.

carbon_footprint on August 8, 2008 at 10:15 PM

Ya know, if they go ahead with this (blacklist), and it’s brought out in the open, it would backfire.

Might be a good thing in the long run.

It always baffles me how movie studios, news studios, & newspapers continually push their anti-American, liberal BS agenda even while losing tons of money.

It’s obvious that they are playing to a small segment of the population, that most Americans don’t stand for this BS.

At some point the people writing the checks will wake up and say, “Enough of this crap.”

I don’t think it will last too much longer. The “new media” will eventually force them to change or go bankrupt. It’s already started.

Within a week it was keyed twice and splattered with a milk shake. Kerry/Edwards stickers seemed to fare much better. I have absolutely no doubt at all that there will be movie industry “consequences” for Voight’s expressing his conservaive views. Hopefully he is set financially and sanguine about retirement.

There are some actors, whose work I have enjoyed in the past, that I just don’t care to see anymore. This is due to political or social stands they have taken over the years. I try to separate the actor’s talents from their personal views but, I am finding that harder and harder to do these days.

The fact is, the blacklist has been in place for some time now. Michael Moriarty, who I left off the list, wrote an article about it years ago. He left Law & Order when Janet Reno tried to get the show off the air because of the violence, and he threatened to sue her. He exiled himself to Canada, I believe. Jon Voigt truly is a brave man. I have always loved his work, but now I have the greatest admiration for him. Only a very select few in Hollywood have openly made their conservative political leanings known, that is modern Hollywood.

Their problems go way back. Voight reportedly cheated on Angelina’s mom and after their divorce, he frequently missed his child support payments (he still owed his ex hundreds of thousands of dollars when she died recently). Angelina’s mom often had a tough time making ends meet. After Angelina was grown, she went through an extended period in which she was engaging in provocative behavior that Voight disapproved of. She had a lesbian affair, and spoke of her wish that she could marry the woman. At an awards show, she and her brother (also Voight’s kid) shared a rather long and passionate kiss on the mouth. Voight wrote Angelina a letter expressing his concern about her behavior, and apparently criticized Angelina in ways that she found hurtful. That was when she cut off relations with him.

Dear Hollywood:

Due to your industry’s recent rise in political activism and just crappy movies, I and my family have taken the following actions:

1. We have dumped our satellite television. I must admit it has been tough but, I do not have to sit there and hear barely-educated Starlets give opinions on thing they know nothing about.

2. I’ve started to read the classics again in their original form. The writers of these classic books were not PC types who tried to make you feel good about yourself. I’m pretty sure that once your industry ‘re-discovers’ these great stories, they will be so PC that no one will regognize them any more.

3. We are waiting for the day when actors will be replaced by computer generated actors. The studios will love this. Don’t think it will happen? Don’t bet on it. Technology will end the days of studios having to put up with pretentious actors. Everything in the entertainment world has changed as a result of technology and don’t think for a moment that you cannot be replaced. Animated characters are to actors as, robots are to assembly line workers.

4. Until that day comes, we’ve got a kick-ass subscription to Net Flicks and we are not afraid to use it !!!

Signed,
Reformed TV/Movie Addict

Did I hear her right when she closed by saying that Voight talked about something “huge” coming out from Hollywood in the next few weeks? Perhaps a large group of Hollywood conservatives have formed an action committee and are coming out of the closet??

Such revelations (running into someone you never suspected was conservative) are common occurrences at the periodic meetings of the secret society of Hollywood conservatives known as the “Friends of Abe.” The group, with no official membership list and no formal mission, has been meeting under the leadership of Gary Sinise … for four years.

Think the “mission” has been “formalized”?

Coming soon and rated “R” for political righteousness: “The Hollywood Revolution!”

Seriously, Bill, this is nothing — wait until Oscar season.

And based on one of the comments left therein, watch how quickly the “Voight sexually abused Angelina” rumors begin to swirl again thru Hollywood.

What I’d like to know is why the hell are these people are so afraid of a mere handful of outspoken conservatives?

Obviously, the horrible failure of all those craptastic anti-war films versus the extraordinary success of Iron Man and Dark Knight has really gotten them worried.

I read recently the Robert Downey, Jr. says that he is a conservative but just doesn’t say it. He’s so hot right now that he can probably get away with saying it.

I look forward to seeing the film when it’s released.
How much you wanna bet there will be little to no advertising of it’s release.

David Zucker is a good director and I like his work.

If we look at all the anti-war, anti-Bush films that were released, none were successful. Like Bela Pelosi’s book, no one came to see.

Hollywood cannot bleed money making piss-poor leftist socialist leaning films and expect to survive as a business. Investors will not continue to throw money as a loosing political philosophy, liberal or not, money talks.

George Loony and his leftist slut buddies, Vanessa Redgrave, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Woody Harrelson, Jessica Lange, John Cusack or Danny Glover, and Danny Devito are all a bunch of kooks that when their movies are released I don’t even give the box office a second glance. Even when browsing the video store rentals, seeing their names on the DVD’s list of actors leaves me putting the box back on the shelf and walking away looking for another film.

Bottom line for Hollywood, I want to entertained, not lectured. I want to be inspired, not indoctrinated. If Hollywood cannot do that, then there’s AM radio and talk.

JarvisW on August 9, 2008 at 1:53 AM

Pat Boone is a conservative columnist. He wrote a piece called “Why Hollywood is Leftist” in 2005. I’d highly recommend it. Here is a brief excerpt:

The collective “we” so reflexively embraced in Hollywood naturally welcomes something of a nanny state. If it’s a problem to have neither the means nor the time to provide the best for your children, why not have the government do it?

. . . . .

And to favor such collective caring lets you avoid feeling yourself not a fully functional community member. You can feel like an altruist, not a narcissist.

“One ominous comment from an entertainment writer does not a blacklist make….”

http://www.variety.com/blog/130000613/post/1680030968.html

Peter Bart is the editor in chief of Variety and the co-host of long-running AMC talk show Shootout.

“If stars are wary about backing Obama, Jon Voight has showed no such inhibition in his support for McCain. Writing an op-ed piece in the Washington Times, Voight warned that an Obama win would trigger “a socialist era” in America.

Voight reminded readers that he had endured the sixties in this country when, he recalled, “The radicals undermined our Vietnam initiative” and “were successful in giving the communists power.” Voight predicted that others in Hollywood would soon rally on McCain’s behalf.

Personally, I appreciate Voight’s fervor, but worry about his intellectual equipment. I remember that moment in the early ‘70s when Paramount offered Voight the lead role in “Love Story,” opposite Ali McGraw. Voight had just achieved stardom thanks to “Midnight Cowboy” and suddenly had his choice of roles.

As a young production executive at the studio, I was trying to push “Love Story” forward and joined colleagues in trying to interest Voight in the part. However the more we prodded, the more reluctant he became.

He finally blurted: “The character in this movie is a Harvard student. He’s bright. He reads books. I could never be believable as that smart young guy.”

Reading Voight’s op-ed piece these many years later, I realize how right he was.”

The editor in chief of the film industry’s most influential, powerful news source took the time and effort to trash an actor for his conservative political views. That is not inconsequential. A crystal clear signal has been sent to conservatives.

Sure. He describes himself as a pro-life conservative and was on the frontlines of fighting John Kerry. As to why he’s in love with Barry is beyond me. Perhaps it’s his attempt to cater to international traffic.

Is Drudge the only one? (or was he ever REALLY conservative in the first place?)

JarvisW on August 9, 2008 at 1:53 AM

Drudge never sounded like a conservative to me.

Johan Klaus on August 9, 2008 at 2:47 AM

Yeah.

I just remembered, Huffingpaint herself! But thats all I got.

JarvisW on August 9, 2008 at 3:09 AM

I am hoping his movie does extremely well at the box office so we can see what is more important in Hollywood.

Liberal ideals, or the mighty dollar.

It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.

can’t believe no one has mentioned the marvelous http://www.evansayet.com

My thanks, also. It’s likely that everyone here has seen the video of his lecture at the Heritage foundation. This is a good time to watch it again. If you haven’t see it, you must.

Rod on August 9, 2008 at 6:17 AM

Only thing this flick is missing is a cameo by El Rushbo himself and Bruce Willis dishing out ass-whuppins!

Or am I getting greedy?

SuperCool on August 9, 2008 at 7:19 AM

Add Lee Majors to the list of Hollywood conservatives.

backwoods conservative on August 9, 2008 at 7:23 AM

I think a lot of the actors just say all this lefty crap because they think they have to. They are more concerned about their careers than anything else. It is like another version of the infamous casting couch.

Voight probably has enough money and is old enough that he just does not give a damn anymore.

Terrye on August 9, 2008 at 7:42 AM

I enjoyed reading the article and the posts here that list known conservatives… most I knew, some surprised me. But, I’m not sure I would list Melissa Gilbert as one, not after a particular episode of Nip/Tuck she did that Newsbusters did a post on… *vomit*.

Django:

The interesting thing about liberals like that is that the fact that George Bush has an Ivy League education and reads books himself, does not seem to make a difference. Not like Sharon Stone yammering on about how American troops have killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Now that {it seems} is one smart broad. Gag.

Terrye on August 9, 2008 at 7:45 AM

…from an entertainment writer does not a blacklist make,…

Blacklist? Hasn’t that term been blackballed..I mean, isn’t there a blackout in effect…umm…aren’t those that use it gonna end up with a black mark on their…oh man, maybe i should just …Fade to black.

Anjolina may have been political – she is so left wing as is Brad that Jon just can’t stomach the bilge they believe.

Not true.

“ANGELINA JOLIE: Actually, [Clint Eastwood and I] don’t disagree as much as you’d think. I think people assume I’m a Democrat. But I’m registered independent and I’m still undecided. So I’m looking at McCain as well as Obama.”

Besides, they’re planning to film Atlas Shrugged. You can’t get much less left-wing than that. (And as people have said above, she supports staying in Iraq until it’s fixed, and she’s visited the troops over there at least twice.)

I’d like to nominate Jeff Wells for this prestigious top 25 list that is dominated by Hollywood liberals.

forest on August 9, 2008 at 8:16 AM

Another Republican nobody’s mentioned — she’s not hugely famous, but deserves more work — is Laura Prepon, the (hot) redhead from That 70s Show (and October Road).

Tanya on August 9, 2008 at 8:23 AM

And it’s stinkbags like Wells who get huffy and sanctimonious at the mention of Joe McCarthy.

It is up to all of us here to tell our friends about the movie and post about it on every conservative forum we can find.

Mr. Voight is to be commended for his courage, and for the actions he has taken in support of his principles. This new movie venture by Mr. Zucker and Miss Sockoloff also deserve our support and praise.

But since she’s another Scientologist wackjob, do we REALLY want to claim her?

kiltedscotsman5 on August 9, 2008 at 9:56 AM

And Gary Sinise.

Johan Klaus on August 9, 2008 at 1:52 AM

How could I forget him. I adore him. And John Malkovich, who someone mentioned as well.

Glynn on August 9, 2008 at 9:59 AM

Voight for NRA Spokesperson!
