The obligatory “Pelosi’s book sales in the toilet” post

Go on and take a hit off that schadenfreude pipe. You know you want to.
The most powerful woman in the history of American politics is suffering a humiliating defeat at the nation’s bookstores, sales figures show.
In her first week at market, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi sold just 2,737 copies of her book KNOW YOUR POWER, according to NIELSEN BOOKSCAN.
The DOUBLEDAY release was launched with a full media push, featuring high profile interviews on TODAYTHEVIEWTHISWEEK…
“The speaker was pre-occupied with house business last week,” a source close to Pelosi explained Thursday morning. “She has now turned her focus to promoting this extraordinary book… doing local signings and speeches. I think we’ll see an uptick.”
Thank goodness there’s no urgent legislative business this month that might distract her from the task of hitting five figures in sales. How to explain this failure of Pelosi-esque proportions? I think it’s the title. The description at Amazon makes it sound like a fairly standard political autobiography, which you’d think would sell well no matter how poorly written it might be given basic public curiosity about the first woman Speaker. The title makes it sound like a self-help paean to “actualization” with all the stomach-churning New Age connotations that might imply. (No wonder the boss is having so much fun with it.) It’s so mindlessly “positive,” in fact, that I’m surprised it hasn’t turned up in an Obama speech yet. Maybe he’s saving it for the convention.
Exit question: Why are hundreds of negative reviews of the book disappearing from Amazon? Conservative critics suggest it’s no accident but reviews of non-political books have been known to disappear too. See also the update here. In all likelihood the deleted comments were rants about Pelosi herself and not the book — which stands to reason. After all, no one’s read it.

Her head’s in the toilet, why shouldn’t her book be?

We’ve heard of coffee table books, this is the first toliet book.
Each page is made of Charmin.
Read it on the can and when you’re finished, recycle the pages immediately.
Brilliant, Nancy.

Advertise the book as toilet paper,………………… that should help with sales.

“I think we’ll see an uptick.”
Oooooohhhhhh……! That sounds exciting. Maybe after a month of book signings she’ll sell 3,000 copies. That’s only about 250 more. You can do it, Nanny. You go girl!
Cody1991 on August 7, 2008 at 12:06 PM
How does printing books save the planet? How many innocent trees were murdered to print this dribble? Did she at least buy some carbon offsets from the Goracle?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 7, 2008 at 12:06 PM
The RNC should have clips of her with the bugged eyes and that lovely voice of hers in every ad in a contested congressional race. “A vote for my opponent is a vote for Pelosi”. She’s just awful and many of my democrat friends and acquaintances agree. They can’t stand her either.

I can usually tell a book’s success by how many requests are made for it through the county library system.
Tori Spelling’s book: 109
Maria Shriver’s book: 21
Nancy Pelosi’s book: 2

Obviously we need a Fairness Doctrine to force Americans to buy these types of books.
Spirit of 1776 on August 7, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Remember folks, bring drillbits to the book signings.
It’s liberal. The people have spoken. No one wants to read/listen to this crap. That’s why Air America tanked. That’s why if she (somehow) manages to keep the majority in the House, she’ll suppress votes on drilling, but more importantly, she’ll suppress votes on Pence’s Broadcaster Freedom Act.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 7, 2008 at 12:09 PM
I noticed that, too. Everyone in America thinks its a terrible book, and 160-some (when I went there) people said so, but now it’s 65 reviews. I agree with the “most of them were just anti-Pelosi,” given that a)she didn’t give them much of a text to work with, apparently, and b)I read a few of them before this whole fiasco.
But then, I can go to If Democrats Had Any Brains… and find, among other Nobel-worthy thoughts:
Amazon: Woman si, Warrior no.

Yes, they are deleting negative reviews because perhaps not all the reviewers read the book. But just take a look at Sean Hannity’s book, with 471 1 star reviews out of 1600, with tags like: propaganda, liar, and fascist crap. Ann Coulter’s recent book has 136 1 star reviews out of 350 or so, with tags like: horrible, transgender authors, and transexuals on crack. Is Amazon extending the same courtesy to these authors to give them more stars? Uh, no. Amazon has even deleted the tags given to Pelosi’s book. Are you going to tell me that ‘transexuals on crack’ is an appropriate tag?
Amazon’s rating system is worthless and broken anyway. You can review a product or movie before it even comes out. There are 5 star ratings with comments like: “I can’t wait for this to come out! It’s gonna be awesome!” Wow, that’s pretty accurate and informative.

Travis1 on August 7, 2008 at 12:29 PM
Sorry Allah but schadenfreude doesn’t apply here. Schadenfreude is feeling good over someone’s bad luck, like if they fell down the stairs or got injured in an accident by no fault of their own. But sometimes people get what they deserve and it’s OK to feel good about that.
Pelosi’s book failure is not “bad luck,” she had total control over it’s content. She wrote an inane book full of liberal claptrap and no one’s buying it. That’s her fault because she’s a devoted leftist and schadenfreude does not apply no matter how people feel about it.
Maxx on August 7, 2008 at 12:30 PM
The tage for this book on the amazon site included marxism, socialism, fairy tale and crazy. And the twenty or so reviews I read were very negative. The stuff they pulled must have been really nasty.
snaggletoothie on August 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Just out of curiosity, does anybody find these reviews helpful? The only instance where I read one that was worthwhile it was a review of a cookbook, written by a professional chef who knew how to write a review. Most times the reviews seem to be superficial comments oftentimes knocking off stars for lack of pictures or too small print.

becki51758 on August 7, 2008 at 12:35 PM
This is hardly surprising. Books sell best when aimed at a literate audience.

Maybe Comrade Speaker Pelosi ought to re-release the book with a more catchy new title, such as “Dare To Be Smugly Platitudinous” or “We Know What’s Best For YouCondescendingly Yours” or “Bay Area Politics Are Normal, It’s the Rest of America That’s Unhinged”.

Eh, for all the “first woman Speaker” hype, Pelosi isn’t very well know and many who are aware of her are not impressed.
What’s interesting about a woman who was raised in a political family, married a rich man and parlayed her connections and fundraising abilities into ingratiation with the Democratic Party machine? What kind of advice could she impart to the women of America – ride Daddy’s coattails, golddig and kiss a lot of butts?

I think it’s common practice to remove reviews if they are mainly ad hominem AND written by people who obviously haven’t read the book in question. Both criteria are likely being met in spades, and I have no problem with Amazon chucking them in the bin. That said, they should probably do the same thing for the opposite situation. Are there raves written by people who also clearly have not read the book? To me, that’s just as asinine.

I don’t think so. The Obama camp w/b smart not to touch it. Her way to “power” isn’t a positive one, and not at all what she writes about, and definitely not a good example for girls or feminism. It’s an old method one.
- Two, her rich husband
- One, how she got to get him, and her activities before that, which an incurious media have not explored, or not written about, yet
Entelechy on August 7, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Should clarify, the media might be curious, but with an agenda, for the time being.
Entelechy on August 7, 2008 at 1:07 PM
Here’s how I use them:
If the review is for a toy (I buy toys for my nieces and nephews), then the odds seem likely that the reviews will be unfettered by unclear motivations.
If the review is for a musician, I used to worry that the reviews were mainly done by fanatical admirer only (who else would bother?) and would therefore be unreliable, but then I realized that there’s merit in taking note of how many fanatical admirers a musician has. The more they have, the more likely it seems to me that there might be something good there.
If the reviews are for DVDs, I generally look for things like poor quality hardware, double-sided disks or (in the case of TV shows) whether music has been replaced or edits have been made. That’s the most helpful information to me.
Finally, if the reviews are for political books, fuggadebout it.
Kensington on August 7, 2008 at 1:09 PM
Will “free” copies of this tome be given to participatns in the Dem convention? Delegates can sit on their copies to get a more elevated view of OhBumer, or they can deflect the eye-blinding glow of his aura when he ascends the throne.

Not to mention that she was anointed by her dying mentor who previously held her seat, and she was elected in one of the most liberal districts in the US. She regularly gets 80% of the vote and has not participated in a debate since her first go at the seat in the mid 80’s. She didn’t have to do much work to get or keep her position these last 20 years, so how much weight do her words of advice on overcoming ANYTHING carry?

She was in Philly yesterday. As I recall, KYW (all-news radio) reported it between the traffic report and the Jersey Shore/Pocono weather report.
Wethal on August 7, 2008 at 1:27 PM
Well, I don’t know much about the types of reviews that generally disappear from Amazon. But I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, at least initially.
Ever browsed for a book on Israel recently? How about race relations or politics? The reviews are almost always distorted by trolls who viscerally disagree with the author and haven’t bothered to read the book.
Nancy Pelosi’s book has 1.5 stars at the moment — how many of the reviewers do you suppose actually read the book? My money says not one.
Now, being more than miffed at Ms. Pelosi at the moment, I don’t really mind. But I would prefer that reviewers give liberal-minded books the same courtesy that I’d expect when I’m looking for a purchase of my own.
Perhaps the reviews on such controversial books should be restricted to the folks that bought the book from Amazon.
