New McCain ad: Democrats love a Maverick!

posted at 10:00 am on August 7, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

The second ad in as many days to display the “Maverick” brand, part of his strategy to claim America’s new center-left median voter while nudging Obama towards the fringe. He’s taken heat for having a schizophrenic message but watching this reminds you why it’s necessarily so: It’ll take a wide, wide straddle between the GOP base and that median to win, so wide that he’s forced to tout endorsements aimed at one group that would actually infuriate the other. Which, incidentally, explains why this is available on the web only and not on TV in the south. If I were Team Obama’s web guru, I’d have my staff posting the link to it on every conservative bulletin board I could find.

Exit question: Which mini-endorsement here hurts Obama and helps McCain the most? The answer’s obvious. Intuitively it seems like flaunting kind words from Hillary would be ruinous to McCain’s standing with the base, but the schadenfreude involved in using her against Obama is so rich and satisfying that even most conservatives should snicker at it. It’s not really about her admiring McCain, after all; it’s about her being properly skeptical of Obama, no matter what she may say now that she’s in “good soldier” mode. Every reminder McCain can offer in that vein is worth offering, which is why it’s a pity he didn’t use that classic clip of her goofing on St. Barack’s messianism in his Moses ad last week. There are plenty of disgruntled, whining, Hillary-nut voters still left on the tree waiting to be picked. Pick ‘em, Maverick!

Rush/Ingram/Hannity will have plenty, however.

Oh yeah, Obama will never go after their money will he? He won’t yank them off the air in the name of fairness will he? Yeah, they can hold up like survivors in a George Romero zombie film waiting for the calvary to arrive and save them with all their cash unlike you and me huh?

Yeah, they stand to lose nothing if Obama gets elected do they? Just their lively hood. But they got all that money to wait it our huh?

They have nothing to loose, Limbaugh will just go onto Sirius and still be a multi-millionare.

Limbaugh was never more popular than under Clinton. They are playing for Obama, that is how they make their money, by sniping at the establishment.

Is there anything El Rushbo luvs more than a little stag party…?

J_Gocht on August 7, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Yeah, they stand to lose nothing if Obama gets elected do they? Just their lively hood.

Rush et al will just go to Satellite/internet radio.

Howard Stern’s made a fortune.

If Rush were to walk the walk, it would mean (gasp!) taking a pay cut and running for office. I would work to get him elected. I would contribute to his campaign (as if he would need it).

McCain walked the walk in the Navy. He’s served for decades in the Senate, despite having no financial need to do so.

Again, I love Rush. I hope he enjoys every penny that he’s rightfully earned. But he’s flawed. That’s all I’m saying. I’m not a mind-numbed robot and disagree with him on this issue, on not being a McCain basher, that’s all.

And as far as class envy, I wouldn’t trade my life for his or for anyone else’s life. I’ve been too blessed for that.

And that is a bad thing? Who cares if he makes that kind of money? Are you sure you don’t support Obama? Whats the matter, living in Florida and Rush has to big a slice of the pie that he won’t share with you?

Making money is great, I love money. I am glad he has lonts of it, it is the American Dream. I am a bit tied up serving the country right now, so my money making will kave to wait like many of us.

He can make all the money in the world, it just makes him a rich, arrogant, loudmouth.

But quit changing the subject, Rushbo does not have anything too lose in an Obama Presidency, his life will probably get better.

And, yes, I do live in FL, but I have the good sense not to live in Palm Beach.

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 12:02 PM

NoDonkey on August 7, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Like that would stop them. They would just pass a bill, or do whatever it is they do and expand the fairness doctrine to cover those areas.

Hell, China blocks internet radio, and Google helps. Think Google would jump on board the Obama fairness doctrine?

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 12:03 PM

In an effort to win points at the McCain talking points spam game, I’m going to take a moment and highlight the differences between McCain and Obama.

Regarding energy independence, McCain flip flopped first, so he gets credit for jumping from the no new drilling platform which he was on for many years, including when the Republicans were in control of Congress and the White House before Obama.

On the War on Terror, McCain gets credit for calling for the surge in Iraq before Obama. However, Obama gets the credit in calling for a surge in Afghanistan first, so we’ll have to honestly call that one a draw.

On the economy, both candidates want to engage in a cap and trade tax which will essentially bankrupt the economy. BTW, this also crosses over into environmental wacko beliefs. End result, at best, a tie.

McCain is claiming to support Nuclear now, but since his record on it isn’t that great, we’ll put that in the wait and see category.

Immigration, McCain claims he wants to secure the border, yet when this was demanded by the electorate, he called them all racists and bigots. On the other hand, Obama supports this legislation. So depending on your point of view, it’s a win for McCain, since the McCain Immigration reform bill is what we’re talking about, or a major loss.

Conclusion, I’m happy to post here about the Democrat John McCain whom I can honestly say is slightly less liberal than the alternative Democrat, Obama.

The next question for the voters, how much whiskey will you have to drink to touch the screen next to McCain’s name? Answer. So much drinking is liable to be going on, the Republican party is asking for Volunteers to get the voters to the polls. They’re calling this program the Election Day designated driver. Also, the Republican Party has put law enforcement on notice that any DUI checkpoints within five miles of a polling place would constitute voter harassment.

I’m guessing the McCainiacs will be the designated drivers.

I work on an ambulance and have to know as much as an ER doctor in a prehospital setting, but I get paid around the same amount as a pizza delivery driver after a good night with gas and tips. So, what is your point?

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 12:06 PM

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 12:03 PM

Somehow I dont think Rushbo would be the first to go under the fairness doctrine even in the highly unlikely scenario you describe.

Good hosts like Mike and Bill Bennet would be the first to go.

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 12:07 PM

The assumption is, you’re smart enough to know what the alternative would be like and when push comes to shove, you’ll do the right thing.

TheBigOldDog on August 7, 2008 at 10:43 AM

So the alternative is instead of a neophyte who has no clue how to work the Washington system, we get an old hand who has lots of political chits, and knows all the dirt to coerce people into supporting his agenda.

This makes me feel better how?

Whahh.

My point is that I am not jealous of Rush, he made his money honestly by getting people such as yourself to listen to his show and get his ratings up.

It does not make him perfect.

And it still does not change the fact that he will be barely touched by an Obama presidency.

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 12:11 PM

Never liked McCain that much. However these ads are awesome! He finally has piqued my interest in him as a candidate. I think they are having impact as know I have something to chear the Maverick on. Way to go John.

flash044 on August 7, 2008 at 12:11 PM

Like that would stop them. They would just pass a bill, or do whatever it is they do and expand the fairness doctrine to cover those areas.

So in essence, you’re arguing that we should lose this election, hand over all three branches of government to the Democrats, and that you expect them to invalidate the first amendment?

What would then keep them from invalidating all future elections? Wouldn’t that put a monkey wrench in the plan to elect “real conservatives” in the future?

Sound to me like you’re thinking America will soon be a one party, Democrat country and that you think it’s a good idea.

I would rather not fight the civil war that would be necessary. I would rather just that Obama lose this fall. Sorry to disagree with you on that.

NoDonkey on August 7, 2008 at 12:11 PM

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 12:09 PM

The Fairness Doctrine does not work that way,

It would make it less marketable to keep all the conservative hosts on the air. The less listened to ones would go first. Thus, Rushbo would be last to go, no matter how much Media Matters would whine.

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 12:13 PM

Thus, Rushbo would be last to go, no matter how much Media Matters would whine.

Exactly, his show is often the only profitable one and usually the most profitable one, many AM stations run all day.

So even a station would have to run three hours of rebuttals (which no one would listen to), they’d keep him.

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Here are some little straw men..

McCain-Feingold — the most brazen frontal assault on political speech since Buckley v. Valeo.

McCain-Kennedy — the most far-reaching amnesty program in American history.

McCain-Lieberman — the most onerous and intrusive attack on American industry — through reporting, regulating, and taxing authority of greenhouse gases — in American history.

McCain-Kennedy-Edwards — the biggest boon to the trial bar since the tobacco settlement, under the rubric of a patients’ bill of rights.

McCain-Reimportation of Drugs — a significant blow to pharmaceutical research and development, not to mention consumer safety (hey Rudy, pay attention, see link).

And McCain’s stated opposition to the Bush 2001 and 2003 tax cuts was largely based on socialist, class-warfare rhetoric — tax cuts for the rich, not for the middle class. The public record is full of these statements.

McCain-ACLU — the unprecedented granting of due-process rights to unlawful enemy combatants (terrorists).

McCain has repeatedly called for the immediate closing of Guantanamo Bay and the introduction of al-Qaeda terrorists into our own prisons — despite the legal rights they would immediately gain and the burdens of managing such a dangerous population.

While McCain proudly and repeatedly points to his battles with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who had to rebuild the U.S. military and fight a complex war, where was McCain in the lead-up to the war — when the military was being dangerously downsized by the Clinton administration and McCain’s friend, former Secretary of Defense Bill Cohen? Where was McCain when the CIA was in desperate need of attention? Also, McCain was apparently in the dark about al-Qaeda like most of Washington, despite a decade of warnings.

Well, things have changed from your days. You have to be nationally registered and pass an FBI background.

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 1:03 PM

Whats the question? All I have heard is accusations.

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 1:00 PM

I will repost from earlier, try to imagine me speaking slowly:

…Do you think that Rush really has just as much to loose as say you or me under the Obama Presidency? …

WOW! Fancy

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 1:03 PM

Just awesome. And the music selection is perfect!

AlexB on August 7, 2008 at 1:04 PM

Sure, if you look at the record, there are lots of reasons not to vote for McCain. However this debate is about style, not substance. This debate is about hope, not change. As in we hope that McCain will finally change, and be more conservative, instead of less.

I have referred to it as the Pull and pray technique

Snake307 on August 7, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Thanks Snake307, that clears it all up for me. Here I was standing on issues when its all about style.

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 1:04 PM

Videos like this remind me of why Fred! was not bashing McCain so vocally during the primaries race (and got grief for for not being aggressive enough).

AlexB on August 7, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Mccain = the only way to stop Mubamba

End of debate.

thank you

I will answer slowly,

Rush has been on their hit list for years. Yes, we stand to lose much, but also, so does Rush.

I don’t give a rats ass how much he makes, I don’t factor that in because I am not jealous, envious or suffer from class envy.

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 1:08 PM

Uhm. Is that why the Class of ‘94 made him an honorary member?
misterpeasea on August 7, 2008 at 12:46 PM

Wasn’t that the same group of nere-do-wells that put out the “Contract on America”…?

Despite their worst efforts; President Clinton left us with the largest budget surplus in the history of our great country.

Considering the “revoltin’ situation” we’re in today; congress should never have limited the president’s term. Oh for the good olde days.

Bill woulda’ been ah shoo in!

J_Gocht on August 7, 2008 at 1:11 PM

It is an honest ad which which should not be offensive to anyone.

Only the results of caving in to the other side are nauseating.

These Dems aren’t stupid. They know McCain is their greatest ally in establishing their leftist totalitarian utopia. Thanks senator.

Valiant on August 7, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 1:03 PM

yeah, chicks dig it. So, pull nodoneky aside and tell him that instead of making snarky remarks about those of us who don’t count being convicts, actually try and come up with an argument.

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 1:13 PM

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 1:08 PM

You chose poorly.

You think he was not on Clintons List? Do you really think that he will be effected in anything but a positive way from an Obama presidency?
The fairness doctine will not affect him in any real way, he will have another great period of Guerilla “Journalism” which would mirror the time he had under Clinton.

And the “Hush Rush” bill would make him the only dog on the block again as we have explained before.

Rush has nothing to loose and everything to gain by an Obama presidency, quit trying to make him into St Sebastian.

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 1:14 PM

RobertInAustin on August 7, 2008 at 1:13 PM

I thought he was referring to Rush, honestly.

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 1:14 PM

actually try and come up with an argument.

Well, since it not about issues, if it was you guys wouldn’t have a leg, just keep the snarky remarks coming…its all you have.

Oh for the good olde days.

Bill woulda’ been ah shoo in!

J_Gocht on August 7, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Yeah..he was great . He was the first (maybe second..Kennedy) sexual predator President…good times.

SaintOlaf on August 7, 2008 at 1:17 PM

Squid Shark on August 7, 2008 at 1:14 PM

Ohhhhhh, I figured it out. It’s not that Rush disagrees with any of the McCain policy, it’s just he wants to undermin McCain so he can make MONEY!

Yes, you are the all seeing, all knowing. You know know it’s not about issues with Rush, its all about the money. Thats why you don’t like him coming out against your boy.

Eventually your true colors would come to the surface.

SaintOlaf on August 7, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Are you sure that would be a good thing? After all, Obama is a neophyte with no experience in Washington while McCain is an old pro who knows all the dirt on everyone. So who is more liable to be able to accomplish their agenda? Answer McCain. Result? More taxes, more Government Intrusion, and the death of the Republican Party. Elect McCain, and you get what you vote for.

Snake307 on August 7, 2008 at 1:37 PM

John: You’re not going to get the wacked out Hillary voters unless you;

A. Get sex change

B. Announce your support of full scale socialism and “universal healthcare”

C. Immediately support tax payer funded genocide of unborn children and infanticide in the U.S. and abroad

D. Convince your wife to convert to lesbianism

E. Start practicing witchcraft

Is it worth it John?

SaintOlaf on August 7, 2008 at 1:39 PM

I watched the ad without reading the verbose analysis and came to the conclusion that the ad was a good one. It’s so good, the Demos will hate it. It’s gotten to be a law of nature:
someone from the right tells the truth about their Saviour and the left pitches hissy fits. You strike the match, it lights!

Christine on August 7, 2008 at 2:16 PM

“Well, I couldn’t work on an ambulance if I had an arrest record now could I.

Why don’t you even try and get an argument because with stoops like this you clearly don’t have a clue.”

How much clearance do you have to have to change tires?

And you still haven’t answered my “substantive” question:

You’re arguing that we should lose this election, hand over all three branches of government to the Democrats, and that you expect them to invalidate the first amendment?

What would then keep them from invalidating all future elections? Wouldn’t that put a monkey wrench in the plan to elect “real conservatives” in the future?

Sound to me like you’re thinking America will soon be a one party, Democrat country and that you think it’s a good idea.

I would rather not fight the civil war that would be necessary. I would rather just that Obama lose this fall. Sorry to disagree with you on that.

NoDonkey on August 7, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Congratulations Hot Aire folks!

You all made it into Saint Mc’s “Astro Turf” campaign, as featured bloggers.

I thought Bill Clinton was the only guy with Astro Turf in the back of his pickup?

Go on! Check it out!

J_Gocht on August 7, 2008 at 3:20 PM

OK, Johnny Mc’s site won’t let you in; try this.

J_Gocht on August 7, 2008 at 3:25 PM

Hard ta see which way this going for until the end.

oakpack on August 7, 2008 at 4:01 PM

That was a really strong ad. It’s funny though, because all of those Democrats now have amnesia and suddenly don’t think McCain’s a swell guy anymore. Obama truly does bring about Change

Seixon on August 7, 2008 at 4:04 PM

How much clearance do you have to have to change tires?

about a good 24′ in I can jack up the rig high enough.

You’re arguing that we should lose this election, hand over all three branches of government to the Democrats, and that you expect them to invalidate the first amendment?

I fully expect them to make an attempt. Don’t think it will happen.

What would then keep them from invalidating all future elections?

The right to keep and bare arms.

Wouldn’t that put a monkey wrench in the plan to elect “real conservatives” in the future?

Nope, not in the slightest.

Sound to me like you’re thinking America will soon be a one party, Democrat country and that you think it’s a good idea.

Well, putting democrats in drag in the white house doesn’t sound much better.

I would rather not fight the civil war that would be necessary. I would rather just that Obama lose this fall. Sorry to disagree with you on that.

Again, when conservatives get good and tired of the whole Hope and Change that both Obama and McCain are preaching, they will come around. For years they have been sending RINO’s to DC based on your philosophy that if democrats get elected puppies and kittens will began to die at a greatly accelerated rate.

All I am saying is that maybe conservatives need to suffer as they did in the 70’s under Jimmy Carter. Reagan tried and failed once, then we got Carter and then in the next election Reagan took 48 states.

But as long as you keep sending RINO’s to DC you will just be buying into the whole Hope and Change. You “hope” your RINO isn’t going to screw you, but in the end they didn’t “change”.
