DNC fires back: Democrats used to love a Maverick

Clever and impressively quick, but anchoring the clip with Hillary just doesn’t work as well as it did in McCain’s ad this morning. Her ripping on McCain is partisan noise, the same as when any senator goes after the opposition; her ripping on Obama by unfavorably (and gratuitously) comparing him to the opposing party’s nominee is withering. Plus, it plays into the irresistible storyline of how much the Clintons dislike and/or distrust Barry O. Go look at the top of Drudge right now and tell me which soundbite — the one in McCain’s ad or the one in the DNC’s — seems more sincere. Is it the one she had to say, or the one she didn’t have to say?
Exit question: Will the Dems’ attempt to rebrand McCain as a Bush clone really work? My hunch is it won’t, just because the impressions on the public left from eight years of the media smothering him in hugs for being such a mavericky Maverick aren’t that easily scrubbed. But never underestimate the power of a 28% approval rating.

Too little too late! Is that the best the DNC can do is play catch-up?
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on August 7, 2008 at 3:50 PM
Is the DNC really this stupid?
As if the RNC can’t produce clips of Democrats shaking the President’s hand?
Of Democrats clamoring to meet the President after the SOTU speech each year?
The DNC exists in a fever swamp. The vast majority of Americans will not agree with their attempt to demonize and criminalize President Bush. Especially since their own members worked with him over the past eight years.
NoDonkey on August 7, 2008 at 3:51 PM
I eagerly await video of Dems shaking the president’s hand, John Edwards saying Democrats will be behind Bush if it comes to invading Iraq, and so much more.
amerpundit on August 7, 2008 at 3:52 PM
Not nearly as good as McCain’s ad from this morning.
Torch on August 7, 2008 at 3:52 PM
All this talk about O’Carter and the false prophet Jeremiah Wright caused a bunch of whining from Barack and company about “guilt by association”.
And yet I find myself wishing I had a quarter for every time O’Carter tied Bush and McCain together.
ynot4tony2 on August 7, 2008 at 3:56 PM
Yeah, comes along one little thing called “General Election” and suggenly he’s not the Maverick the Dems thought they knew. Comes out pretty pathetic, if you ask me.

O/T but proving that environmentalism requires prosperity.
DerKrieger on August 7, 2008 at 3:57 PM
The media had been pretty fair to McCain, especially for a Republican. But most folks weren’t paying attention then.
jgapinoy on August 7, 2008 at 3:57 PM
Should the dems really be making ads demonstrating how they will say anything at the most political opportune moment?
McCain should pair this ad with the earlier one his campaign made and end it with “Dems, for McCain before they were against him”.
RiteWingFascist on August 7, 2008 at 3:58 PM
The same might be asked of President Bush and company.
calbear on August 7, 2008 at 3:58 PM
Excellent point.
amerpundit on August 7, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Hey, what gives. I visited Drudge as AP “ordered”, and directly below the captions about Clinton and Obama was a headline that “Osama’s driver convicted of Terror….”. Then a few seconds later when the page auto refreshed, headline gone.
Did Drudge fear questions about the proximity of an Obama story with an Osama story? How many may have read the headline as “Obamas driver convicted or terror…”
AverageJoe on August 7, 2008 at 4:03 PM
Subdued. Weak. Fail!
Nichevo on August 7, 2008 at 4:04 PM
Big deal the DNC can pass around talking points to several talking heads and get them to spread the BS..
New politics? I think not.
Chakra Hammer on August 7, 2008 at 4:04 PM
The more we hear from “the haughty John Kerry” who served in Vietnam and was decorated for his braveness the better!!! I would propose that one of the lamestream networks, possibly Obamsnbc, give him his own nightly show to espouse his views on all things democRATic….
sabbott on August 7, 2008 at 4:04 PM
LOL. Zomg nooo!! Democrats are speaking poorly about a Republican? How scathing!!
Seriously, this ad makes no sense unless you’ve seen the first one, and even then the first one is still better.
And the devastating blow at the end!! Two politicians shaking hands!!
jimmy the notable on August 7, 2008 at 4:05 PM
Huh?? Care to explain?
Zetterson on August 7, 2008 at 4:06 PM
It’s up to 28% now?

Two words: Weak and Weaker..
Nelsa on August 7, 2008 at 4:10 PM
Lame.
CP on August 7, 2008 at 4:10 PM
Seems like they had some clips ready to re-assemble a response at any time. Maybe because of the democrats previous statements, they were ready for this eventuality from McCain’s media team.
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 4:15 PM
Dude, that’s weak.
Perhaps we should prompt up the pic of Jimmy Carter and Nancy Pelosi meeting with George Bush. Give me a break. I’ve met people I don’t agree with politically or religiously or whatevs. It’s not some kind of a smoking gun.
Idiots.

calbear on August 7, 2008 at 3:58 PM
That makes no sense. Are you suggesting that Bush has previously expressed a preference for Obama over McCain?
DaveS on August 7, 2008 at 4:18 PM
…. hmm. So? Looked pretty tame to me. Nothing out of the ordinary for Bush to wish the winner of the republican primary well. What was he supposed to say, “damnu McCoont! You’ll never win against that GOD of a man, Barack Obama!” *Bush gets down on his knees and praises barack Obama as McCain stands, dumbfounded….”
Hillary’s “last say” about Obama was Awesome. And it would seem the entire set-up for that ad was to just get out that message.
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 4:19 PM
So what are they telling us with this ad? That they’re partisan hacks who will throw you under the bus as soon as it threatens their political futures?
triple on August 7, 2008 at 4:19 PM
Meh…….
Seven Percent Solution on August 7, 2008 at 4:20 PM
OT and not that it matters to anybody, but some things I just can’t type out in good conscience.
‘Used to’ is one of those things. I say it, but when I type it out, and read it literally, it just doesn’t seem to make sense in type.

Heh.
Just remember, AP, we’re all mavericks now.
Unless the McCain Thought Police are on duty.
Then it’s Ein Volk, Ein Partei, Ein Fuhrer. Mit amnestie und der globalen Erwärmung für alle, Amen
misterpeasea on August 7, 2008 at 4:26 PM
Wow. Your reasoning and logic are superb! Excellent comments!/
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 4:27 PM
The is why McCain is leading in Youtube hits as of today.
Nelsa on August 7, 2008 at 4:28 PM
Used to love? Most of those were from less then 6 months ago.
Rbastid on August 7, 2008 at 4:29 PM
Words Matter. That’s all McCain needs to say.
stenwin77 on August 7, 2008 at 4:34 PM
And there’s the chicken farmer, right on cue. Sorry for the abtrünnigkeit, mein Fuhrer!
Some might think that your constant mocking of me reflects poorly only on you, _man.
misterpeasea on August 7, 2008 at 4:34 PM
The whole DNC flip flops?
multiuseless on August 7, 2008 at 4:35 PM
1. Get Dodd a brush
2. Get a track that doesn’t jerk when looped
3. Get a better response.

I don’t understand, I’m not mocking you, I’m agreeing with your comment. Well, whatever, Best of day to you sir!/
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 4:41 PM
And some of us think he’s right on target.
NoDonkey on August 7, 2008 at 4:43 PM
Wow, so after praising McCain, the same Democrats are now, predictably, saying they don’t like him anymore since he’s against them for the White House. Did I say predictable? Yeah. Predictable.
It’s the same hustle they tried to pull on the Iraq war once they saw they could use it as a wedge issue against Bush. What, did we want to go into Iraq? Eh… no Bush blinded us, we believed faithfully in Bush, Bush tricked us all!
Whatever. That’s a big reason why I stopped considering myself a Democrat in 2003. Keep it up Dems, maybe we can make that last another few years.
Seixon on August 7, 2008 at 4:49 PM
McCain, your next commercial on line one.
Seixon on August 7, 2008 at 4:50 PM
Exactly.
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
But…it’s still imitation. The minions of He who must not be named have no humor and no originality. McCain’s ad wins hands down. Better pace and the very best of Hillary.
marybel on August 7, 2008 at 5:31 PM
in other words, you can’t trust what Dems say from day to day.
jcrue on August 7, 2008 at 6:13 PM
However said McCain was inside Barry O’s OODA loop was exactly right. The Messiah is reeling from the blows, which are now arriving too fast for him to react.
DelD on August 7, 2008 at 6:48 PM
At the very least, trust by verify.
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 7:17 PM
(trust but verify)
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 7:17 PM
As Allah says… Clever and impressively quick… but in the end, they’re still on defense.
Diogenes of Sinope on August 7, 2008 at 10:11 PM
The only place that’s smoking are the gray mass between the ears of the pathetic DNC. Did I tell you, that they’re going to try to scare you with high energy prices (sarcasm). Conservatives have to respond by voting the block headed dems out, and McCain in!
