Condi: America will be fine under President Obama

Indeed it will, unless you believe the power of The One is such that he can lay low even the mightiest of nations. Then again, “fine” is a subjective term. If, as Condi surely does, you think the west’s six-year tap dance over Iran’s nuclear program is a “fine” way of addressing the problem, replete as it is with ineffectual UN sanctions and time aplenty for Tehran to work out the kinks on mastering enrichment, then yeah — by that standard, President O will be just fine.
“I don’t need another job in government with anybody,” she said. “Look, I’m a Republican, all right? Sen. McCain is a fine patriot, and … he would be a great president. But there’s something to be said for fresh blood. And I know that there are a lot of very good people who could be his vice president.”
During the interview in a regal room at the State Department appointed with chandeliers, rich carpets and cases of porcelain, Rice was asked: “Would you feel safe with a President Obama?”
“Oh, the United States will be fine,” she responded. “I think that we are having an important debate about how we keep the country safe. I think we are having an important debate about our responsibilities, our obligations, our interests in the Middle East in the wake of the now increasing evidence of success in Iraq. Those are important judgments for the American people to make.”

I know you are an extremely busy woman and all but have you listened to Barack Obama (praise be his holy name)?

This from the woman who stopped using the word “jihad”.
Bye, Condi. You did your job, now start looking for another one.

This just proves the guilt trip strategy being used by the anti-American racists has no limits. Condi removes all doubt if you don’t vote for Obama, you are a racist. What other reason could there be? Yeah….right.
volsense on August 7, 2008 at 3:26 PM
McCain is fresh blood, too. It just so happens his fresh blood carries the oxygen of experience.
Obama’s? Not so much.

Likely being more closely related to himself than she is, I’d have say ‘not.’
That said, she said that “America would be fine” not “he’ll be a great president.” However, I do disagree with her.
baldilocks on August 7, 2008 at 3:27 PM
I’m not really trying to sound like a jerk but who really cares? It’s Barack Obama we’re talking about. This guy should be in the same catagory as Kucinich. He’s a flying saucer spotting away from being a babbling moron.
Right now he’s just a major idiot.
Pcoop on August 7, 2008 at 3:27 PM
OMG! A Republican broke ranks and doesn’t try and scare people into not voting for an opponent?
What’s the world coming to?

And to think I was enthusiastic once about her possibly running. I said to myself, “Vance, it’ll be Hillary in 2008. Why not counter with a strong conservative black woman? Rice is successful, smart, good looking, has the right positions for the most part–she’d be the best choice to go against Hillary.”
How wrong I was. And how glad I am that we didn’t do that one, and for once, I’m glad Rice just basically wants to get out of Dodge. Good riddance. She was SOOOO much better as the national Security advisor.
Vanceone on August 7, 2008 at 3:29 PM
State Dept. brain eater gets another one. Damn.
I’m NOT worried about Iraq. I’m not even worried about Afghanistan.
I’m more concerned about Iran and much more concerned about Pakistan, as far as that part of the world goes.
My concerns are actually much closer to home. Drill, clean coal, nuclear, tax reform, tax cuts, getting college costs to some sane level, and securing the damn borders.

It is interviews like these that make me wonder if politicians have any real convictions.
Spirit of 1776 on August 7, 2008 at 3:29 PM
this goes to show that Bush and his team are more tied to dems than repub. I have always said that Bush is the most liberal president since LBJ. His war fighting was no andrew Jackson, or patton inspired. It was more LBJ inspired. His spending made LBJ look like a cheap spendthrift, his lack of fighting social policies from abortion to gay marriage was left lite.
unseen on August 7, 2008 at 3:29 PM
Rice makes it sound almost as though she’s saying that the US will be safe because the American people will make the important judgments. One could argue that she’s just trying to avoid making political statements.
On the other hand, there’s Obama’s famous statement, from his 1995 The Audacity of Hope: “I am new enough on the national political scene that I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views. As such, I am bound to disappoint some, if not all, of them.” But it’s not just Obama’s newness, it’s his way.
ForNow on August 7, 2008 at 3:29 PM
That’s basically how I feel. She’s not a zealot and she doesn’t feel like fear mongering, even if it is appropriate to be somewhat afraid of Obama. Its not a race thing at all.

AS for Tom Shipley: yeah, well, it shows a bit of graciousness you’d never see on your side of the aisle, what with the BushitlerMchimpy stuff and the open calls to assassinate Republicans. How many times does HuffPo have to close comments again?
Revel in your class and tolerance, leftist. It reminds me of the same level of tolerance old Beria had for HIS political enemies.
Vanceone on August 7, 2008 at 3:32 PM
Condi Rice lost all credibility when she took the job at State and proved how utterly clueless she is. I like hearing her constantly yapping about the Road-Kill Map, which no one with a brain ever took seriously.
And Condi has done such a great job dealing with Russia, too. Of course that was to be expected as she is an alleged Soviet expert. Maybe when Russia gets some more nukes in Cuba we will truly understand Condi’s genius moves at State.
I liked Condi until I saw her work at State and realized what a complete fool she is.
progressoverpeace on August 7, 2008 at 3:32 PM
Also, knowing what I do of her family, I would put the values with which Dr. Rice was raised up against any conservative upbringing…her odd statements as of late notwithstanding.
The Race Card on August 7, 2008 at 3:33 PM
… in the same way that Condi has done a “fine job” over the last 4 years?
{shiver}
One dud supporting another dud.
Lawrence on August 7, 2008 at 3:33 PM
That was a very political non-answer answer. She was asked if she would feel safe under President Obama. She never addressed the issue personally. CYA, I think. Probably inside she was thinking, “My Stanford, piano playing, ice skating, Russian speaking, did I mention b—k azz, is gettin’ a Tec-9!!!”

I think Condi needs to get out of the State Dept … her views have skewed. It’s definitely had an influence on her.
darwin on August 7, 2008 at 3:36 PM
Devastating retort.
Evidently a statistically conclusive percentage of blacks agree that “blood is thicker than water” - voting, as they are, for Obama precisely because he is black(ish).
LimeyGeek on August 7, 2008 at 3:36 PM
When it comes to Obama (May He Live Forever), there is such solidarity. First JC Watts, now Condi.
fossten on August 7, 2008 at 3:36 PM
The title is misleading. The ‘new blood’ she was talking about was for McCain’s Vice President. She thought that the country would prefer someone ‘new’ instead of her for Vice President.
She said she thought McCain would make a great president. Then she was baited by a question about Obama. She believes America is bigger than one person. I agree with her.
Come one people. Condi Rice has been a great asset to the Republican party. Don’t blow it by vilifying her with anything like this.

So all you folks who don’t think the United States will be reasonably fine under Obama, are you finished with your nuke-proof bunkers yet? Have you stuffed your mattress full of cash?
America will be fine. It might be different and he might make a lot of stupid decisions, but for the most part, things will be alright. All I read in this thread is a lot of faux-outrage.
jimmy the notable on August 7, 2008 at 3:38 PM
The MSM will run with this and milk it for all its’ worth. For someone who is supposed to be so smart she often makes me wonder about her common sense.
Tobias2012 on August 7, 2008 at 3:38 PM
I wish she hadn’t phrased it that way.
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 3:38 PM
[baldilocks on August 7, 2008 at 3:27 PM]
Agreed.
I remember how I felt when Condi was first became SoS, when that picture was published of her walking across the floor in that striking outfit and calf-high boots and thinking “There’ll be some change now, alright.”
I think her “fine” is a combination of acknowledging one person can’t affect or change things too much and the recognition that US is a very resilient nation which can absorb ‘mistakes’, if you will, and keep on chugging.
Dusty on August 7, 2008 at 3:38 PM
Principled.
A lot of people thought the nation was fine under Carter too, but it didn’t feel fine, come to think of it the nation really wasn’t fine under Carter and the same goes for his second term aspirant.
Speakup on August 7, 2008 at 3:38 PM
I think most of the people in this thread skimmed right over that. She’s basically saying that the Bush administration shouldn’t permeate into the McCain administration.
jimmy the notable on August 7, 2008 at 3:39 PM
What, really, did you expect her to say, or should she have said? She gave a neutral, non-politicized answer, which is what one would hope from the State Dept. I think she gave the only answer she could have that would not have ignited a shit storm and helped Obama.
Mr. Bingley on August 7, 2008 at 3:40 PM
Condi has supported President Bush without hesitating even in the face of tons of negative pressures on her. I don’t blame her for not wanting to remain in DC after this. Rice is a great patriot, she makes me proud to be American, and she does the Republican party VERY proud.
ThackerAgency on August 7, 2008 at 3:40 PM
If you actually read the linked article you’d see that Condi did not endorse Obama for POTUS as Allah’s headline insinuates.
I look forward to reading that book. She’s absolutely correct. This administration has fundamentally changed the world.
I shudder to think what would have happened in Europe if attention had not been shed on the spread of Islamic fundamentalism. And I suspect we here in America would have walked blindly into the same abyss.
Texas Gal on August 7, 2008 at 3:40 PM
Also, in what bizarro universe do you guys live where she would ever say, “No way! Obama is a dangerous socialist commumarxist!! Even if she believes that, she simply can’t say it. It would be totally inappropriate.” And how quickly the racist stuff came up really leaves a bad taste.
jimmy the notable on August 7, 2008 at 3:41 PM
Excellent. And when you watch the video all of this that you said becomes very clear.
And by “Fine,” this only holds true if each administration keeps up the same protection for us all. When a new andimistration orders the guards to come down from the walls, and tries do so something like destroy all of our nuclear weapons, allowing other countries to have theirs, or some other such event - then we won’t be …. “fine.”
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 3:42 PM
Good point. I misread.
Spirit of 1776 on August 7, 2008 at 3:42 PM
Wow, I can’t believe how the quote here was taken out of context. Here’s the quote IN context:
She was saying she didn’t want to be VP, after serving in the gov’t that fresh blood is good meaning she would be happy to see someone other than her serving. Geez…talk about spin!

Ms. Rice was i.m.o., a complete mediocrity as SOS. Hard to tell from the results how she was any better than Madeline Halfbright or Bill Christopher.
“America will be fine” if Obama wins.
No, ma’am it wont. Please go away.
Mike D. on August 7, 2008 at 3:50 PM
Some thoughts…
1) I am not impressed with Condi. I had high hopes when she took over State. But she has done nothing to clean house. She drank the Kool-Aid with the “Palestinian plight”, and she acts more and more as a Bush flunky. Now, I cringe at the thought of her remaining in Government office.
2) I don’t think that an Obama presidency would be as bad as the McCainiacs are portraying it. He tends to flip flop with public opinion, which has been turning on Iraq and is a tidal wave over energy. Congressional Republicans would form up against him. More and more pressure would build on him to do something real on energy. I think you would even see some Democratic Congressmen trying to rein him in so he doesn’t look so radical (and threaten their positions come election day). And many of the things we would have to fight against, are the same ones we would have to fight the Maverick on.
dominigan on August 7, 2008 at 3:52 PM
No one wants to shoot you, Esthier.
Yes, the country will be ‘fine’ and survive. Obama isn’t going to bring about the destruction of all mankind, as the democrats said about Ronald Reagan(staring ww3 with the russians) or George W Bush(that reckless cowboy is going to invade every country or nuke them).. But there will be a fundamental difference if Obama is the president.
As I mentioned just up the page, one of the things he wants to do is destroy all of our nuclear weapons. This is the same mentality as democrat mayors have with gun control, where they confiscate all guns from law abiding citizens, and then the crime and murder rate goes up. Yes, cities like Chicago and Detroit are “fine,” because the buildings are still there and most of the citizens havent been murdered,
wise_man on August 7, 2008 at 3:53 PM
This thread sucks.
For all I know these comments are a hilarious cheap shot at ObaMessiah and his puppeteers, the nutjob left, who have mocked Condi as a slave girl and a parrot for Bush, an imbecile who knows zero about foreign policy, and a token chosen only for her skin color.
Their criticism of her has been scathing, racist, and unhinged. For her to come out and softly disavow the notion of The One being a dangerous megalomaniac and neophyte - placed in the context of their lunatic attacks on her - is just too rich.
Make no mistake, I couldn’t disagree with her more, as my hundreds of comments on Obama clearly indicate.

a capella on August 7, 2008 at 3:54 PM
Your optimism is commendable, but you should understand that the US is not guaranteed to exist forever and can well be put under by an awful President (especially if combined with a retarded Congress and anti-American judges). The US Constitution delineated the greatest governmental structure ever devised, but it is not able to withstand all assaults of stupidity, and those assaults have been getting worse and worse. Eventually, even we can reach the breaking point.
progressoverpeace on August 7, 2008 at 3:54 PM
Yeah. I get it. He’ll be a bad president in all likelihood.
What’s that got to do with calling Dr. Rice a racist for saying the country will be fine?
Esthier on August 7, 2008 at 3:55 PM
Not necessarily. She would fit right into a Democratic administration.
JDPerren on August 7, 2008 at 3:55 PM
Maybe this is better taken as a reminder that no matter what the President and the administration may say, they still administer diplomacy through the State Department, which is easily the most liberal, even anti-American, part of our government.
There is non-stop war between every conservative administration and the career leftists bureaucrats at State, such that even our appointees turn into liberal nitwits there (i.e., Powell, Rice)
Jaibones on August 7, 2008 at 3:56 PM

I always try to tell myself that our form of government doesn’t allow one person the ability to ruin or destroy the country but then my mind wanders back to the Carter years and remember one came pretty darn close.
