Video: Saudis freak out over Nissan’s new Israeli ad

posted at 12:25 pm on August 6, 2008 by Allahpundit

I searched in vain for a complete version with English subtitles so we’ll have to settle for the bits and pieces in Haaretz’s report. I’m woozy at the thought of how this spot would be received in the United States, even though it aims squarely at the subtext of both the left’s and right’s laments over American dependency on, ahem, “foreign oil.” In fact, it’s considerably more politically correct than it needs to be: A proper telling of this story would show Wahhabist clerics taking payoffs from our protagonists and using the money to print up Arab-language copies of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. But we mustn’t say such things aloud. To do so would be “Islamophobic.” Click the image to watch.

That’s funny but was it smart? Doubtful.

“If your enemy is quick to anger; irritate him”

Sun Tzu

Saudis calling people racist. Now that’s funny.

RobCon on August 6, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Boo-hoo, poor Arabs, don’t have a sense of humor do you.

Lance Murdock on August 6, 2008 at 12:34 PM

I don’t have any sound right now, but this looks like the full, but non-subtitled version video of the commercial: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/151045 .

Actually, I guess if it isn’t in English, I don’t need sound.

kc8ukw on August 6, 2008 at 12:35 PM

Is the ad from a local Israeli Nissan dealership or from the company of Nissan based in Japan? I didn’t see this distinction in the video, and the linked article is quite few in details.

Still, this reminds me of the Absolut ad “In an Absolut world” that ran in mexico from not that far back.

wise_man on August 6, 2008 at 12:35 PM

FYI, the subtitles were cut off in Firefox 3, but I was able to watch OK in IE7.

Meanwhile, that looked like legitimate satire to me. The Saudis seems to have as much of a sense of humor as the Obama campaign.

irishspy on August 6, 2008 at 12:36 PM

Hey Saudis…it’s just a f*ing commercial. Take it down a notch.

Aside from that, I was surprised to see a Saudi newsanchor in a pantsuit and no headscarf.

CP on August 6, 2008 at 12:37 PM

Nice find, kc8uku. But, why is the Israeli ad in russian?

wise_man on August 6, 2008 at 12:38 PM

(a female Saudi news anchor, that is)

Proof positive – once again – that these animals have no sense of humor.

The truth hurts!

TooTall on August 6, 2008 at 12:29 PM

Yep, and part of that truth is the more efficient we are with the use of oil combined with opening up more drilling here in the US and developing alternative sources of energy the more the Arab oil cash cow will dry up and as their cash cow dries up so will their funding of their jihadist Mahdrasa’s and for terrorism in general!

In addition, once their oil cash cow goes dry what other industry do they have to keep their economy going…carpets? The Arabs will be in a world of hurt when the US no longer buys their oil and I look forward to when that day comes as it will be cause for celebrating in streets!

That’s the real reason they’re pissed!

Liberty or Death on August 6, 2008 at 12:42 PM

I love the “You destroyed my home!” and the hysterical jumping. Nissan is officially PR=fantastic. This might even top the old VW-suicide bomber ad. But not the “Pink Moon” one.

I still hate Asian cars.

emailnuevo on August 6, 2008 at 12:42 PM

I think it’s incredible. We’re too sensitive these days.

It’s not even attacking them personally, just as oilmen.

The left would love it if an ad did something similar to oilmen here, specifically any with ties to the President.

Esthier on August 6, 2008 at 12:43 PM

The Israelis are racists!

Nissan is racist!

Man, that’s getting old.

AZCoyote on August 6, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Hey Saudis…it’s just a f*ing commercial. Take it down a notch.

CP on August 6, 2008 at 12:37 PM

Not for nothing, but weren’t we all upset with that Absolut Aztlan ad? Just an ad. Just sayin’…

But for what it’s worth, my next car may just be a Nissan.

JetBoy on August 6, 2008 at 12:45 PM

Nice find, kc8uku. But, why is the Israeli ad in russian?

16% of the Israelis have Russian as their mother tongue.

freevillage on August 6, 2008 at 12:46 PM

Some of the Saudi one liners in the ad while they pound their fists on the poor Nissan lol..

‘May the HOT sun melt you, and he that created you..’
‘Let Allah take you / strike you down’
‘May the Nazis puncture you day & night’

saus on August 6, 2008 at 12:46 PM

At least they’re not calling for jihad. That’s a positive sign, right?

AlexB on August 6, 2008 at 12:48 PM

This might even top the old VW-suicide bomber ad.
emailnuevo on August 6, 2008 at 12:42 PM

Of course! I totally forgot that one as well.

Now the Arabs need to boycott two car companies.

wise_man on August 6, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Is anyone else shocked that Saudi news features an attractive female anchor with long hair (uncovered) and cleavage? That must be like porn to those guys. Can somebody clue me in? Maybe this is one for the learned Robert Spencer. Really, this is Saudi news, really?

jimmy the notable on August 6, 2008 at 12:52 PM

They would love it, but it wouldn’t change the fact that left of center establishment is still swimming with the Saudis in oil investments. The left of center foundations in the United States maintain considerable investment in US and foreign oil companies.

gabriel sutherland on August 6, 2008 at 12:53 PM

The culture of perpetual outrage marches on.

Do those people ever laugh or have any fun. What a drag it must be to be an Arab.

I guess the only fun they have in life is beheading a neighbor or mercy killing their daughters. What a sorry culture.

I guess the cameraman is a woman, and they are confident that when the men loose their self control and blindly attack the woman for imediate sex, the locked studio will protect her.

She is no doubt begging to be raped.

I just expected if someone was going to present this as news, they would have copied the hebrew version voice track version. Unless this is all they got, because someone recorded this one. Is there a Israeli youtube?

JetBoy on August 6, 2008 at 12:45 PM

I don’t completely disagree with you, but I do think the two are different.

One talks about redefining the map and having America lose its land to Mexico in an “Absolute world.” The other makes the case many, many other car commercials in America already have. More fuel efficient cars will mean spending less money on gas.

True, generally it’s nameless gas station attendants who are the brunt of the joke, but the gist is still the same.

Esthier on August 6, 2008 at 1:10 PM

How dare you call us violent and narrow minded! Apologize or we will kill you and destroy your home! We might even start riots and blow up pizza parlors and birthday parties just to prove how wrong right you are!

HawaiiLwyr on August 6, 2008 at 12:31 PM

This ad is genius. They don’t even have to use the ad here in the U.S. Now they can’t start the campaign . .

This is the car that the Saudis hate.

- The Cat

MirCat on August 6, 2008 at 1:15 PM

Heh, this is funny ad.

For those comparing this to Absolut. They aren’t the same. This ad says, in short, our car is so efficient it’ll piss off oil producers. That ad said life would be better is part of America was gone. Not the same.

Spirit of 1776 on August 6, 2008 at 1:16 PM

I saw the ad on TV last week here and my first reaction was…. to laugh.

But my second reaction was that Nissan’s gonna lose a lot of business elsewhere. Chances are it was done by the local importer without Nissan Japan aware of it.

I can tell you that I haven’t seen it since last week. I wonder why.

Shy Guy on August 6, 2008 at 1:16 PM

The advert with the Russian voice over airs on the local Russian language channel, think Telemundo

MechFighter on August 6, 2008 at 1:00 PM

I may be misunderstanding you, but Telemundo is definitely a Spanish language channel and not at all Russian.

Esthier on August 6, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Never mind. As I hit submit I realized that I read that wrong. I thought you were saying, “the local Russian language channel, I think Telemundo.”

Sorry about that. I was reading too fast.

Esthier on August 6, 2008 at 1:19 PM

The commercial itself was “cute.” Less so the Saudi guy not being challenged on his premise that this commercial is to be expected since all the Israelis are racists.

A bit of a warning, just like Youtube it’s filled with both good and the stupid, mostly stupid.

wise_man on August 6, 2008 at 1:09 PM

The video that was shown in the Haaretz article was originally a TV news report on Channel 10, Haaretz just dubbed and added the english subtitles.

MechFighter on August 6, 2008 at 1:20 PM

Of course Israelis are all racist. They all generalize entire countries or groups of people. All Israelis do this. Every one of them.

Wait…

MadisonConservative on August 6, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Is there a Israeli youtube?

wise_man on August 6, 2008 at 1:09 PM

Probably. I know there’s a UK and Japan youtube. They tend to be uk.youtube.com or jp.youtube.com.

Maybe Israel would be is or ir.youtube.com?

They don’t tend to be very difficult from normal youtube. And for people who have youtube blocked at work, going to uk.youtube.com can actually get around that block even with the same videos that are shown on regular youtube.

Esthier on August 6, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Spirit of 1776 on August 6, 2008 at 1:16 PM

Absolutely correct. They are not the same.

However, they are both ads that are played in one country, intended to be for the internal consumption of that country alone. However, because we live in an age where countries borders don’t stop the instantaneous flow of information, both of these ads can come back to bite the parent company in the arse. In that case, they are in the same category in that example, as a discussion of media and advertising.

wise_man on August 6, 2008 at 1:34 PM

Both Arabs and Jews are Semite.

TheSitRep on August 6, 2008 at 1:37 PM

Semite:
a member of any of a number of peoples of ancient southwestern Asia including the Akkadians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs.

TheSitRep on August 6, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Another thing that makes me wonder, did they get arab actors to get outraged at the nissan car? Did they know the whole scope of the ad or just showed up that day, dressed as wealthy saudis and speak the lines in arabic.

Hopefully no other arabs will be PO’ed at these actors in the Nissan ad and take out their outrage! on them. ‘how dare you work for the great satan, the joos! I pit on thee!’

I’m woozy at the thought of how this spot would be received in the United States, even though it aims squarely at the subtext of both the left’s and right’s laments over American dependency on, ahem, “foreign oil.”

I was looking to see what model it was, come to find out it’s a Tiida- Japanese market name for what we see as the Versa. A decent, if uninspiring car based on the Renault Megane. (Backstory- Renault bought a large chunk of Nissan a few years ago.)

BillH on August 6, 2008 at 1:54 PM

Maybe we really can fight the Saudi’s with harsh words and hand gestures. They get so butthurt about the dumbest things it’s comical.

Geronimo on August 6, 2008 at 1:58 PM

The Saudis should use TiVo when they’re watching Israeli TV.

Aristotle on August 6, 2008 at 2:04 PM

Pretty funny commercial. And predictable response from the Saudis. No wonder the Dhimmicrats like the idea of islam so much… both have zero sense of humor.

I nearly choked on the line that the Saudi was using about the Jewish community being racist. It’s simple projection but, since he might behead anyone who has the audacity to remind him that he’s in the same race as Jewish people, don’t tell him. It’s too dangerous to utter the truth to powerful fools.

What a joke that Saudis are so quick to make gratuitous accusations of racism when they abuse black foreign workers like literal slaves, locking Philipina maids up in the basement and raping them at will. The Muslim game here is to hold other people up to their highest moral standard, standards Muslims, and particularly Saudis, reject. Do you understand the double game they play?
