The obligatory “Gore’s got a brand new yacht” post

posted at 2:07 pm on August 6, 2008 by Allahpundit

A houseboat, to be precise. Its name? “Bio-Solar One,” or … BS One. Yes, really.

According to Austin, the engines are bio-diesel fueled and Gore can expect to use about two gallons an hour to cruise Center Hill Lake. With a 500 gallon capacity Austin says Gore won’t need a refill for “two or three years” though he admits having “no clue” about where Gore could get bio-diesel at the lake. The Hurricane Marina dock doesn’t sell it.

“This boat is going to be the Toyota Prius of the houseboat business,” Austin proclaims. “It is the most eco-friendly houseboat anywhere in the country and is going to revolutionize the houseboat industry. People are increasingly worried about high gas prices and this is the answer.” Austin claims that the “Bio-Solar One” will create 40-50% less carbon emission and use half the fuel of other similar houseboats. “Gore will consume a lot more fuel driving to and from the lake than he will ever use cruising on this houseboat,” Austin asserts.

The solar panels have not yet been installed but are expected to arrive from Reno, Nevada “any day” and will be in working order “soon,” says Austin.

When the solar panels are installed the Gore boat could power itself and “most of the dock” according to Austin. In the meantime, however, Gore is plugged into the dock as his primary power source.

We’ve done so many posts about the Goracle’s conspicuous consumption that I was inclined to skip this one altogether, but I know people relish them — which is actually the key point. Even if Gore’s conscience is clear about his personal energy usage, even if he thinks it’s sufficient to be merely carbon neutral despite the dire global emergency supposedly being caused by emissions, even if he never quite explains how middle- and working-class people are supposed to find the money to install solar panels and retrofit their homes for geothermal energy (answer: they’re not, they’re simply supposed to consume less, unlike Gore), wouldn’t he at least want to avoid handing his opponents PR bonanzas like this one? This isn’t conspicuous consumption, it’s gratuitous consumption, which I’m normally happy to bless in my role as a capitalist stooge but which seems self-defeating for a guy whose life’s work now is convincing people to cut back in the interests of defeating climate change. Exit question: Could this be part of his global warming message, actually? If the ice caps melt, the oceans will rise, and Arks will be at a premium…

Well, I bet he at least drives his Prius to the marina to offset the indulgences for the houseboat, right? Anybody? Anybod?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 6, 2008 at 2:20 PM

Let’s see, 2 gallons / hour, 500 gallon capacity and he won’t have to refuel for “two or three years”.

I guess that means that he’ll be using it for less than 1.4 hours / week then – with only 250 hours worth of fuel and 8,766 hours / year he’d have to be pretty immobile to get through one year, let alone “two or three”.

But still, as noted there’s nothing wrong with owning a nice houseboat that’s tied to the dock 99.99% of the time – it’s part of what makes America great! And (once the solar panels are installed) this one won’t even be wasting electricity while it waits for him to jet in.

KCSteve on August 6, 2008 at 2:21 PM

When asked about the impact of this yacht on his carbon footprint, Gore simply responded, “You idiot, it floats on water… it’s incapable of leaving a footprint.”

The ostentatiousness of new money.

I seem to remember the shelf life of ethanol is kind of short. E10 shelf life is a lot less than standard gasoline because ethanol blends cause it to absorb … wait for it … water … and contaminates the fuel. That’s probably the same for pure ethanol.

Dusty on August 6, 2008 at 2:25 PM

On the local news this morning, the marina manager is quoted saying “Not sure where he’s gonna get the bio-fuel from–all we have is gasoline here.”

Nice lake though–my sister was married on one of the small islands there.

Al Gore is the kind of guy who would buy a Hummer, with a solar-powered radio in it. And then claim it used less energy than the standard Hummer.

And yet, Dubya gets no acknowledgment for his highly energy-efficient Crawford Ranch.

Jesus how many solar panels can one have? It is either going to sink the boat OR it is going to offically melt the iceburgs and glaciers via a sunny day if aimed just right.

But, but honey, Al Gore is saving the planet and he’s doing it out of the goodness of his heart…now all of Gotham can have a happily ever after life, isn’t Lord Al just wonderful.
I just love his little Penguin suit, its so cute.

Speakup on August 6, 2008 at 2:28 PM

The AGW theory has been getting slapped-up lately, and Gore knows his eco-cred is running thin. So he’s pissin’ through as much carbon as possible. He’s on a one-man crusade to warm the earth back to the point where his AGW garbage is relevent.

I don’t know about bio-diesel, but regular gasoline starts getting gummy in 2 to 3 years.

Additionally, since there is only so much bio-diesel available on the market, every drop that Gore burns putzing around in his little toy, is a drop that is not available for some poor schmo trying to drive to work.

MarkTheGreat on August 6, 2008 at 2:34 PM

He’ll likely to have Toyota Prius’s drive it in./sarcasm

The Toyota Prius of houseboats. Really? What I like about the Prius isn’t it’s greeness but instead it’s low price at the pump and at the dealership. Respectively speaking and with my best guess the Prius costs $20K and not $200K.

In an attempt to appear eco-friendly he comes off as a rich snob.
