Obama really doesn’t like a debate

Barack Obama got stung by a challenge from a Las Vegas reporter on his energy policy, and specifically on his efforts to paint John McCain as a lackey of Dick Cheney. Jon Ralston asked Obama about the contradiction inherent in this strategy — the fact that Obama voted for Cheney’s energy bill in 2005 while McCain voted against it. Obama stammered out an accusation that Ralston was a proxy for McCain:
RALSTON: I guess what the American people want to know though Senator, is what is the real difference between you and John McCain. You are running this ad tying him to the industry saying that he has taken all of these contributions, but as you well know there is a story out today about how you supported the Dick Cheney bill and he opposed it. That bill gave subsidies to the oil and gas companies, John McCain opposed the bill saying those are tax breaks for those companies, Barack Obama favored it.
SEN. OBAMA: Hold on a second Jon, I thought I was talking to you instead of debating John McCain, but I am happy to let you serve as his proxy. The fact of the matter is that I supported that energy bill saying at the time that those tax breaks were wrong but also recognizing that this was the largest investment in alternative energy in history. And that it was important for us, for the solar industry to get off the ground in places like Nevada, for to get wind kicked off the ground, that that was something that we had to do and I immediately said during that time and subsequently that we should strip out those tax breaks for oil companies. I would point out that in December of last year, we had a vote to strip out those tax breaks for oil companies, there was one Senator that did not vote on that measure, and that was John McCain.
“Serve as his proxy”? Time was, reporters were paid to ask candidates tough questions. Ralston’s question is entirely legitimate, especially since Obama and the Democrats made Cheney’s energy policy a campaign issue in the first place. If Obama dislikes it so much, why did he vote for it — and why blame it on the one candidate in the race that actually voted against it?
In the rest of the interview, Ralston presses Obama on his policy reversals and asks him how voters can trust him not to shift again for political reasons. In Nevada, the proposed nuclear waste storage facility at Yucca Mountain remains a highly controversial topic, and Ralston wonders aloud when Obama will change his mind and support it — a killer for him in Nevada. Obama gets offended at the suggestion:
SEN. OBAMA: John, don’t put words in my mouth or anticipate what I am going to do. I’ve been opposed to Yucca Mountain from the start so if the suggestion is that John McCain who is in favor of Yucca right now should get a pass on that.
He was opposed to telecom immunity at the start, supported public financing at the start, thought the surge would create more violence at the start, and so on, and so on. “Don’t anticipate what I am going to do?” No one can anticipate what he will do — that’s the problem.
Jen Rubin says that the Obamessiah has apparently added another commandment: Thou Shalt Ask No Tough Questions of The One. I’d add, Thou Shalt Not Anticipate My Actions Based On My Statements.

Obama’s problem is he doesn’t believe in the power of his ideas to persuade. I see none of that passion in him. Probably a good reason for that.

I should be president because I’m black of course. That’s something I can’t flip flop on, and it’s something McCain will never be. Vote for me because I’m black. . . come on, you should know that – do your homework.

Can you hear it…at about 2:35 in, after Obama’s “McCain proxy” remark? Sounds like muffled murmuring or something. Ralston is either laughing at the remark, or maybe some guys in the studio.
JetBoy on August 6, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Seriously, look at how Obama immediately attacks the assumption implicit in the question instead of attempting to answer the literal question.
This is something noticeable at least as far back as Dan Rather’s attempts to crucify Richard Nixon. Invariably, conservatives attempt to address the literal question rather than attack the false assumptions on which the question is founded.
This tells me it has been a deliberate liberal tactic for at least 50 years, and one they will not willingly accept when used against them.
rockhauler on August 6, 2008 at 10:59 AM
I love it! He gets so defensive when asked why he changed his mind! Keep it up Barrack. It’s quite amusing. It reminds me of a group of chickens. When one chicken shows a blemish or wound, the rest pick and pluck at it relentlessly.

BO’s body language is pretty telling, he did the same to Moran when a tough question is coming, or one that he anticipates. He puts his hand up, sort of a halt sign and dominates the interviewer. It’s not very polite, but I see him do it constantly.
Townhalls are BO’s achilles, they are being avoided like the plague.

I keep wondering if the MSM moderators will throw him softballs, or they’ll try to appear “objective” (for them).

I half expect him to one day be challenged and reply “you just don’t like me because I’m black”. He’d probably never say it but I bet he thinks it sometimes. If he said it there would be a chill in the room like you wouldn’t believe.
Paul-Cincy on August 6, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Answering questions from reporters and debates are just a distraction from issues facing Americans.
And the most important issue facing Americans today, is just when will Obama ascend into heaven and be seated at the right hand of god.
You can question authority, earthlings, but gods do not take questions from the news media.
Unbelievable. Do Democrats work on finding the worst possible candidates, or do they just do it naturally?
NoDonkey on August 6, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Obama is getting rolled all over the place. Including in the Senate.
Example: Last month the Senate vote for the FISA telecom immunity bill came up. There was a bipartisan agreement to let it pass. The Kennedy left-wing objected of course, but they knew they didn’t have the votes. Per the agreement Hillary and Obama voted to block the left-wing’s immunity-stripping amendments.
The cloture vote came up and both voted for cloture. But at the last second Hillary changed her cloture vote from yea to nay, and Obama had no time to react.
Obama was now stuck in a dilemma. If he voted nay on the final FISA bill it would be a Kerry-esque event (”He voted for it before he was against it!”) and underscore his tendency to flip-flop. Or he could grit his teeth and follow through and watch the netroots howl. (”He wants to shred the Constitution! He voted with Bush!”)
Hillary made sure that Obama was screwed either way.
Afterwards Raoul Ortega at BroJudd quipped, “I guess this is what happens when you take an unloaded gun to a knife fight.”
Gideon7 on August 6, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Good thing Obama’s staged the debates this year so that only Obama lapdogs PBS, NBC and CBS will moderate the debates. Remember, Obama has always had a stand-offish approach to the press, because Obama is horrible when he’s not scripted. Look for far less press interviews going forward and more throngs of cheering fans.
Outlander on August 6, 2008 at 11:13 AM
He’s a coward, plain and simple. He can’t do well in one-on-one debates unless he’s hitting below the belt, which he says he doesn’t do… but obviously he does.
He’s using Clintonian tactics in his “proxy” accusation because he’s just another pol with the same values… lie.

Fishoutofwater on August 6, 2008 at 11:17 AM
Obama isn’t interested in issues, it’s about his personality. His campaign is a cult of personality. We learn nothing in moderated debates, they’re a kabuki dance, they’re not real, they’re plastic. Think Nixon-Kennedy debates. Sixty, 90 seconds per? It’s in a town hall format that you can really get into the issues, ideas, it’s not about the personalities then, it’s not just face time. Obama has no passion for his ideas, while McCain does. Listen to McCain talk about his energy prescription, he really believes in it.

Winebabe on August 6, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Paul-Cincy,
“Obama’s problem is he doesn’t believe in the power of his ideas to persuade”
I think the problem is that he doesn’t really have ideas to believe in. The more I see/read of Obama in this campaign, the more I think that the original intention was NOT for him to be the nominee. I think the thought was that the 2008 campaign would get him some good campaigning experience, a lot of name recognition, possibly VP nominee with Hillary as the Pres. nominee. If they win, he is the nominee in 8 years. If they lose, he goes back to the Senate, does a lot of high-profile stuff, beefs up his knowledge on the issues, starting his 2012 campaign in 2009. That would take away most of the bite of the “no experience” issue, Iraq will almost certainly not be an issue in 2012, and Iran will either be taken care of or pretty well-defined.
But Hillary’s campaign blew it, and now Obama is the nominee and isn’t ready for it.

It’s hard for me to believe. I would say McCain is stronger than Dole in 1996, and Obama is weaker than Clinton in 1996. That’s not saying much though. I think it will be close, and more likely that Obama wins big than McCain wins big. McCain does have the potential for a broad appeal, he’s got that going for him.

carbon_footprint on August 6, 2008 at 12:43 PM
At least when Bill Clinton made accusations of a tough questioner being in the pocket of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, he did it to Chris Wallace on Fox News. There wasn’t anything wrong with Wallace grilling Clinton back in ‘06, but Bill was smart enough to know that claming you’re being attacked by Fox News sets off the Palovian protective reaction among the left.
Obama, on the other hand, apparently wants to brand any tough questioner as part of the VWRC. That might convince some of the hard liners, who believe MSNBC could be a fair and balanced news channel if only they could dump that morning show with Scarborough, but if Barack plans to attack every tough questioner by accusing them of being in the tank for McCain, he’s going to lose the moderate voters who might think Fox News has a GOP bias, but don’t think local news stations or the other news networks do.

There is a well known bromide that defines insanity as repeating the same behaviour over and over again but expecting a different result. This is based on an aspect of the human survival instinct by which we predict future outcomes based on previous experience.
It strikes me that, given Sen. Obama’s tendency to change position on important issues in the face of minimum pressure, it is quite reasonable that we “anticipate” his behaviour and assume (or at least brace ourselves) for the next “flip flop”.
Indeed it might be almost insane to not assume more flip flops.
