Mike Gravel on Al-Arian prosecutor: “Find out where his kids go to school”

First the Levant post, then the Cohen post, now this: “Tolerance,” in all its many flavors. In fairness to Gravel, he didn’t mean to suggest to the crowd that they should go and kill the prosecutor’s children. What he meant, clearly, is that they should … empower lawmakers or something. I’m not sure what that means, but let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. All he likely meant was that he wants people to make up signs and posters, congregate outside the kids’ school, and peaceably hound them at every available opportunity. Besides, he’s always had a grandfatherly vibe; it’s just that he’s more the sort of grandpa who sits in a van with binoculars watching for an eight-year-old to emerge for recess so that he can go scream in his face about what a bad man daddy is. Let’s just consider ourselves lucky that he’s a progressive so we know his heart’s in the right place. If he wasn’t, I dare say this would have been covered on more than just Fox News.

DAT60A3 on August 6, 2008 at 9:32 PM
For what? I found his little tirade to be disgusting but he didn’t actually encourage anything except picketing. I’m not a lawyer so I don’t really know but I think you’ve got to actually contribute to some illegal activity to even be charged. Maybe some of the lawyers or police who post here could throw some light on this. Did he do anything illegal? As far as I could tell all he did was call for more of what the left does on a routine basis.

Endangerment?
WisCon on August 6, 2008 at 9:36 PM
Mr Gravel needs to have someone shove a .40 in his mouth to get his attention. Then they should tell him “You now have a vested interest in the safety of those people, because if ANYTHING untoward happens to them, guess what?”
Shit like this and the people who do it ‘from the high moral ground’ need to know that there are consequences for their actions….and they won’t take place in a nice warm and fuzzy courtroom.
GarandFan on August 6, 2008 at 9:36 PM
What he said isn’t illegal. The Supreme Court distinguishes between “true threats,” where there’s a prospect of imminent action, and political hyperbole. Besides, he didn’t call for any crimes to be committed. It’s creepy as hell but not prosecutable.
Allahpundit on August 6, 2008 at 9:36 PM
He’s just a typical Democrat. what can you say?

MadisonConservative on August 6, 2008 at 9:42 PM
“It’s creepy as hell but not prosecutable.”
Yeah, until some wingnut decides to DO SOMETHING.
Gravel’s arguement (if you want to call it that) is with Gordon Kromberg, not his wife, not his kids, not his relatives.
Gravel just wants someone else to do his dirty work.
GarandFan on August 6, 2008 at 9:42 PM
“Find out where his kids go to school”
Mike Gravel doesn’t want these people to find out where the kids go to school just because he wants them to talk bad about daddy. Anybody who thinks that’s all he’s telling them to do is delusional.

Well, it’s not quite up there with the New York Times naming the person who interrogated the terrorists friends at gitmo, which added nothing to their story, against the CIA’s wishes.
and it’s not quite the same as that one democrat who said that he was glad that Al Qaeda knows what Cheney’s aid looks like, because they watch C-Span.
And countless other similar acts that democrats commit against our own citizens to the aid or comfort of our enemies, foreign or domestic.
Yeah, that one of the reasons that I also hate certain democrats. Despise them, actually.

No way would I defend Gravel on this but I just saw him on O’Reilly’s show and he seemed to be impaired, as in mentally disabled. It was sad to watch and made me wonder if his family should step in and try to prevent him from speaking publicly anymore.
This guy needs medical help more than prosecution I think.

Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Whether is manifests itself in mild and amusing side effects, or the truly deranged and unhinged is all a matter of different levels of nature and nurture. Social genetics from the family, and the community. Maybe there is strength in numbers, and some act out more boldly because of that, or from youth and stupidity, such as indoctrination. Or in this case, advancing age and a lifelong IV drip of the poison that is liberalism collects in every cell and deposits a sedimentary layer of crust so thick that this comment from him sounds perfectly rational.

I saw this yesterday on Brit Hume. He crossed the line when he encouraged his audience to find out where the kids go to school.
He should be brought up on charges for that, but he won’t.
He’s a scumbag. Democrats have no shame. And I’m painting with a broad brush when I make this statement. Any registered Democrat that accepts, through silence, this unacceptable behaviour, share the scumbag label.

Jaibones on August 6, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Hmm.
Oh, I’m sure he mean this is a totally innocent manner, and not at all as it sounded like, exactly. Just like in this instance,
I’m sure he meant for his rabid followers to hand the gun store owner some tobacco “snuff” and ask him to come “out” to accept their gift.
Again, what is it with deranged, unhinged, tolerant democrats who want to see their enemies physically harmed (by their supporters or to assist others who would harm them if only they knew where their target lives so they can commit violence against them) because they disagree with them politically.
wise_man on August 6, 2008 at 10:17 PM
i dont think he was advocating violence but pushing for protesting and such, i.e., intimidation tactics, against a prosecutor is just flat out wrong! to try and pressure someone not to prosecute a crime goes against all American values.

I saw that segment too, and for someone who is mentally impaired he sure did a fine job of buttering up O’Reilly and his great big ego. Under his avuncular demeanor, this guy is as ruthless as it gets.
Look at how detailed his plea to stalk the prosecutor was, down to the typical Marxist trick of suggestint that they accuse him of being a racist.
Don’t be fooled.
Meanwhile, just imagine if Gravel had made it to the White House, and had the FBI working for him to enforce his personal enemies list.

Could be? I have no clue of course but I couldn’t help thinking “Alzheimer’s” while he was prattling on. He seemed to be unable to completely grasp the thread of the narrative, if you know what I mean.
Though there are plenty of Democrats who aren’t potentially ill who could be denouncing his statements, if they sufficiently disagreed. I haven’t run across any of that yet and don’t really expect to.

Can you imagine the shock and outrage if a Republican had encouraged the supporters of an abortion clinic bomber (or abortion doctor killer) to harrass the children of a prosecutor or a judge?

Hmmmm. I wonder if there’s an obstruction of justice angle that could be pursued?
He was very slyly prattling on, flattering O’Reilly, trying to get him off guard.

Did you see Mike Gravel on the O’Reilly show tonight? Boy, is this guy an arrogant, abrasive jerk? Aside from that, I think he is a pretty good egg. The reason he appeared on the show is due to his current support of former University of South Florida Professor and associate of some pretty questionable Middle East charities, Sami Al-Arian, who sits in prison because he won’t testify before a federal grand jury on all those “charities” that we are afraid might be sending “charitable contributions” to terrorists. Now, Mike Gravel, former Alaska senator and former Democratic Party candidate for president is Al-Arian’s new-found best friend. Why not? They are both abrasive and arrogant.
On the O’Reilly show, Gravel showed his “human side” by calling O’Reilly a liar twice. He pimped his new book. He did everything he could to convince me that he would be a perfect running mate for Barack Obama-especially now that Obama’s designated guy for Muslim outreach has stepped down because it has been revealed that he was associated with some other Muslim guy tied to… well, you get the point.
But here is what really sets former Democratic Party presidential candidate Mike Gravel apart. During the O’Reilly show, Bill put up the following quote from Gravel in connection to the Al-Arian case:
“Find out where he (the Al-Arian case prosecutor) lives…Find out where his kids go to school…They can’t take the heat. Deliver it to them.”
Boy, am I glad Gravel didn’t win the Democratic Primary. Can you imagine President Gravel knowing where you live and where your kids go to school?
Rather than deny or apologize for the remarks, Gravel launched into an attack on the prosecutor and the case against Al-Arian, interspersed with insults directed at O’Reilly. As I sat there listening to this bozo, I kept asking myself how the Democrats could let this guy stand on a stage with all the other candidates in televised debates.
Then I remembered Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Question answered.

It would be front page news on the New York Times for weeks, daily news specials from Olbermann and all of the other MSNBC programs, National Public Radio would spend half their broadcasting budget on the coverage hosted by Daniel Schorr and Dan Rather would come out of retirement to host a dozen full hour specials with his special investigative correspondent, Bill Moyers.

Gravel is simply following the new SOP of the radical left, and it has nothing to do with democracy or civility. Whether it’s intimidating a federal prosecutor by targeting his children, or firebombing the home of a research scientist in Santa Cruz, these radicals embrace violence, even violence against children, as a means to an end. It will only get worse.
sgt_rich on August 7, 2008 at 12:41 AM
Mr. Cromberg, I recommend the versatile Glock 30. It is easy to carry concealed, more accurate than many target pistols, and holds 11 rounds of the authoritative .45 auto in a small, easy-to-shoot package. It’s the ideal weapon to defend your home or your family against those that would do you harm.
sgt_rich on August 7, 2008 at 12:46 AM
Typical scum bag leftist. Find out where his kids go to school and picket him everywhere he goes and call him a racist or anything you want?? Is that his idea of democracy? Gravel is a total idiot. My brother-in-law was a police officer for many years. He always had some scumbag tell him he was going to get his family.
Bill would ask, “Do you know what my wife and kids look like, where we live, where my kids go to school?” Etc.
Scumbag, “No.”
Bill, “That’s too bad, ’cause if I see you near them at the mall, near my house, near my kids’ schools, I’m going to assume you are there to hurt them, and I’m going to blow your @$$ away.”
Mr. Prosectutor, carry heat–if Mr. Gravel-for-brains shows up anywhere near your family … .

I saw the interview too and I agree with your assessment, the man has fallen off his rocker for sure.
Not only that but in my opinion he’s a fraud and this whole ‘outrage’ over this prosecutor having ‘rail-roaded’ the “victim” (a terrorist supporter/fundraiser) is a farce and has more to do with selling his new book! I support this statement by the fact this foaming at the mouth fruitloop immediately started the interview with O’Reilly by pushing his book, even offering O’ an autographed copy, which O’ declined! What a sad joke this man is, so transparent in his faux rage!
This miserable waste of human flesh is willing to create controversy where none exists and in doing so is hampering our ability to cut off funding to terrorists that will use the money to kill us, worse yet he does so all in the name of making a few bucks off his crappy book! If his actions aren’t despicable and justification for him being thrown in prison for aiding and supporting our enemies I don’t know what is!

“He also has been charged with contempt for refusing to testify before a grand jury, and that is what Gravel was objecting to.”
So Gravel thinks that the prosecutor is “a racist” and “an injustice” for doing his job to prosecue a real contempt charge? I wonder what Gravel’s stance was on KKKarl Rove and his “contempt” charge.
brainy435 on August 7, 2008 at 2:03 PM
It is a crime to “incite” another to the commission of a criminal act.
So the questions would be: (1) whether that jackass Gravel said constituted incitement, and (2) whether in fact it caused others to commit a criminal act.

Why do we need to debate legal or illegal? He’s talking about kids for crying out loud. When it comes to politicians morality and ethics are not synonymous with legality. But regardless of any of that, going after children for any reason is just plain wrong.
Reminds me of the mother who pretended to be a teenage boy on MySpace in order to humiliate a teenage girl she thought was saying mean things about her own daughter. That young girl committed suicide and federal prosecutors went to great lengths to find this mother guilty of something, anything. Why? Because we protect the defenseless and innocent and what’s wrong is wrong. It’s just that simple.
