Gingrich to Pelosi: Worry more about gas prices and less about selling your book

I’m not sure why he thinks the Dems will eventually cave and agree to an up-or-down vote in September when their entire strategy is designed to avoid that (maybe he expects another oil spike with the resulting public pressure becoming unbearable?), but here’s hoping.

Per his comments at the end, I’m guessing he’s cool with the Israeli Nissan ad.

I’m not sure why he thinks the Dems will eventually cave and agree to an up-or-down vote in September when their entire strategy is designed to avoid that (maybe he expects another oil spike with the resulting public pressure becoming unbearable?), but here’s hoping.

Newt is making the Democrats think twice about their message to their consitutents during this recess vacation. They will look bad come November if they are caught in September/October with having to make a vote that will cause them problems in November. To tell their consitutents that they support drilling (counting on Pelosi’s promise to prevent a vote) will backfire it they are forced to publicly vote AGAINST drilling by the democrat leadership. Whether there is an up or down vote in Sept does not matter so much now. The congressman just need to think about the possibility of a vote and its consequences. It is all about getting re-elected at this point and a vote SUPPORTING drilling would greatly embarass the Democratic leadership while a vote AGAINST drilling might lose some Democrat seats. That is the delemma facing Pelosi at ths point.

Second look at Newt!

cntrlfrk on August 6, 2008 at 4:27 PM

Newt for Secretary of Energy…….. under the radar, competent, has a plan in the works, completely effective.

Seven Percent Solution on August 6, 2008 at 4:27 PM

The only way there will be a vote is if there is some ban on offshore drilling that just comes up for periodic review. And even then I would not be sure it will get out of committee.

This is what people are not getting: Democrats are in control of the House. That is why calling them back for an emergency session would have been a waste of time, or even counter productive. I think it makes a good campaign issue for McCain and the Republicans running for the House, but I don’t see any reason to believe that Nancy Pelosi will cave on this. 70% of the country was in support of drilling when she shut the place down, she did not give a damn.

Terrye on August 6, 2008 at 4:28 PM

Too bad some of these Republicans did not deal with this when they had the majority. No, it is easier to blame Bush somehow someway for everything than it is to acknowledge the fact that they squandered their majority.

Terrye on August 6, 2008 at 4:30 PM

When you consider how effectively Newt was demonized by the Left in the 1990s, the fact that he can be brought in as a high-profile point man on this issue speaks volumes as to how unpopular Pelosi’s (public) position on this issue is. Conversely, it shows how no-profile the GOP leadership in the House has been generally.

sabbott on August 6, 2008 at 4:15 PM

When asking where are the strong competent leaders in the Republican party, and why they are missing from the Presidential race, look at the pre-emptive moves made by the Democrats. Dan Quayle, New Gingrich, Jeb Bush were highly qualified, competent, and acceptable conservative ‘presidential’ candidates that were ‘taken out’ early by the media before they ever had a chance to run for president. George W Bush surprised them and slipped in under their radar, explaining why they were so upset with him when he won. The Dems go after their number one challenger, then when he is knocked down, they go after the next in line.

Beware of Democrats bearing gifts.

It is suggested that the Democrats in the House and Senate will agree to bills to start drilling when they get back from vacation – until January when they hope to have a Democrat President and a veto proof Congress.

If that occurs, be prepared for them to reverse any or all of the drilling bills passed during last quarter of this year.

Oil companies, ultimately owned by individuals, have property rights. Oil, like every good, is not a ‘national resource’. That is the premise (shared by the Dems) that is at one root of the problem in the first place.

As far as the Republican “leaders” not being there and being forced to drag up Newt, obviously that reader has not been watching C-SPAN or reading about this “revolution.” The Republican leaders have been there in force. Just because you don’t see them in this clip, doesn’t mean they haven’t been there. Try to stay current. Newt did a fine job. He is a better advisor/mentor than he ever would be a President. He is a brainiac – not a leader. He is more of a background person, maybe like Rove, only better.

The Republicans are cyclying through their members, having some of them in Washington and having the rest in their districts, presenting the same messages. The Washington contingent will change as those in home districts come back to Washington and so forth.

You two are like a lynch mob. Lynch first, get the evidence later, if at all.

As I said to blue, I think newt is doing great where he is right now. Raising awareness as a regualr person is a good thing.
