Will prostitution increase during the conventions?

I guess that depends on the definition of prostitution. If people take it to mean whoring oneself for pecuniary gain, for sublimating principle for momentary pleasure, and in using people as mere tools for manipulation, then yes, we can expect a big increase. It’s just that actual prostitutes won’t get any extra business:
As the Twin Cities and Denver gear up for four days of politics and parties during the Republican and Democratic national conventions, advocacy groups in both cities are getting set to combat what they believe will be a surge in prostitution.
But police in both cities say that the groups are mistaken and that research indicates there will be no increase in the sex trade.
Police in both cities will monitor the situation, but neither believe they will see any increase in prostitution. Neither New York or Boston had any issues with it in 2004, and Denver doesn’t even have it on their priority list. Activist groups have mobilized to limit the exploitation that they expect to see, which is commendable, and they have begun working with the DNC and RNC to coordinate their efforts, but it may wind up being all for naught.
Why would the political conventions be different than the trade conventions that normally fuel prostitution? St. Paul police believe the level of activity in the convention and in its auxiliary events preclude it. Put simply, political conventions keep people too busy to allow them much time for mischief. The heightened security surrounding the event — and the risk of exposure — probably curtails the impulse as well. Trade conventions don’t have either quality.
As King Banaian says, it’s the free time and the booze that gets conventioneers into trouble. We’ll have to just resign ourselves to the normal political prostitution for entertainment in both cities.

There will be plenty of prostitution. Most of it non-sexual.
amerpundit on August 5, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Isn’t the populist message really only a vague appeal to prostitution?
Star20 on August 5, 2008 at 12:21 PM
They chase away the streetwalkers but the high price prostitutes that work the conventions booked their rooms months ago.
Blake on August 5, 2008 at 12:22 PM
The dems prostitute themselves all the time to get elected and don’t care one bit about what the people want!
For the dems it’s what’s good for the party and not what’s good for the nation and it’s people, so yes the dem whores will be out in force in Denver!
Liberty or Death on August 5, 2008 at 12:23 PM
Well, that settles it. I’m not going. Cancel my desk, please.
Jazz Shaw on August 5, 2008 at 12:25 PM
heh, that stall in the picture doesn’t look big enough for a ‘wide stance.’
Liberty or Death on August 5, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Oh, like that has ever changed!
upinak on August 5, 2008 at 12:28 PM
in Denver, all of the whoring will be done by people on the big stage.

Will Eliot Spitzer, excuse me, Client No. 9, be going to Denver?

Aw, they censored my link to show that prostitution is available even in China for the Beijing Olympics.
Go to Craigslist, click on China, then Beijing. Under ’services’ select ‘erotic’. Choose w4m and tell me that the US will be able to stop prostitution.
China even banned Craigslist, but it doesn’t seem to be hurting these girls’ trade.
By the way, you can arrest any 25 girls in any American city on any day of the week using this service.
ThackerAgency on August 5, 2008 at 12:37 PM
It is not a question of whether there are going to be whores at the convention, its a question of if they are going to be elected.
volsense on August 5, 2008 at 12:40 PM
I’m thinking prostitution (the sexual kind) is the least of LE’s worries.
Bob's Kid on August 5, 2008 at 12:41 PM
For example, it is Tuesday at 9:45 AM in LA and already they have 350 solicitations for prostitution on Craigslist. Maybe we should alert the authorities on one or two.
ThackerAgency on August 5, 2008 at 12:47 PM
So…does this mean that the Dems will only have Pelosi to say “Yes, Mistress!” to during the Convention? Going to drive down leather sales before the Convention, for sure.
coldwarrior on August 5, 2008 at 12:47 PM
OK. Fairness Doctrine and all that…in M-SP, who are the Repubs going to be able to say “Who’s yo daddy?” to?
coldwarrior on August 5, 2008 at 12:49 PM
Hopefully, to the democrats, in November.
john1schn on August 5, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Denver only has about 50 solicitations so far this morning.
Minneapolis already has nearly 100 solicitations. . .
here’s hoping they don’t get a ’spike’ in prostitution during their conventions.
ThackerAgency on August 5, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Are you kidding me? Politicians are prostitutes by definition.
We pay these people’s salaries, and in return, they f*** us every day.
What would you call it?
hillbillyjim on August 5, 2008 at 1:00 PM
This is a rhetorical question, right?
No matter how you want to define the term “prostitution”, any time you have a gathering of that many politicians, you can be sure it will increase. I think that’s the fourth law of thermodynamics or something …
thirteen28 on August 5, 2008 at 1:01 PM
I’ll put it to you this way………..When do bar and restaurant alcohol sales increase the greatest in Indianapolis every year? During the annual Southern Baptist Convention.
So, yeah. There’ll be some prostitutin’ goin’ on!
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 5, 2008 at 1:04 PM
Will the Democrats even have the spending money to get a good Prostitute?
Does Denver even HAVE high class hookers?
Will it be easier to spot the hookers now that the bums are going to be at the zoo?
Maybe the convetioners would be safer ordering room service!

RE: Yes Mistress
I believe you have confused a dominatrix with a prostitute. A dominatrix is engaging in a legal activity in almost all jurisdictions. It does not involve sexual activity. If you make the mistake of obtaining the services of a dominatrix thinking it is the same as a prostitute be prepared to be tossed if you are lucky otherwise I hope your health insurance is paid up. Never insult a woman holding a whip.
jerryofva on August 5, 2008 at 1:24 PM
At least streetwalkers give good value for their pay.
What, exactly, is the nation going to gain by the parliament of whores meeting in Denver?
Mommynator on August 5, 2008 at 1:25 PM
I can’t say for sure whether or not prostitution will increase, but I suspect that the violent rape of the American electorate will continue unabated.

Good news – for once, Democrats will be paying a price when they F people over.

Are you stating that all dominatrixes, dominatri…whatever, are legal in all states and in all jurisdictions, and all are somehow akin to going to the therapist?
Uh uh.
Other than in Texas and California, I have seen no information as to “dominatri” being accepted legal occupations nor have I seen more than scant anecdotal information (and from dominatri themselves) about their being seen as a professional psychotherapist.
But, all of that is besides the point, the second double entendre in my posts was that Dems seem more to want to be dominated and Repubs seem to be more of the “in charge” types.

I have only semi-direct knowledge of the profession in the form of one my former collegues and still good friend who was a psychologist for one of the prominent 3 letter agencies and decided that she would enjoy herself much more as a Mistress then as a shrink evaluating case officers. Her husband concurs that she is much easier to live with now.
I know for sure that dominatrix services are legal in Maryland, DC and New York. You can go to any number of legal clubs in the City.

The World Science Fiction Convention was in Kansas City back in 1976. We followed the Republican National Convention and the Shriners into town. I’m told that the local prostitutes noticed the drop off in business when we arrived.
But that was a long time ago. :)
Bill Roper on August 5, 2008 at 1:43 PM
After all my years as a case officer for one of those 3-letter angencies…who’d have thunk it? Yeah, a lot of us got evaluated a lot, even after hiring, but sure wish our Plan would have covered that realm of therapy. :-)
[Not necessarily the dominatrix thingie, but, you know...well, never mind.] ;-)
coldwarrior on August 5, 2008 at 1:47 PM
Perhaps she has evaluated you before. I wonder what was going through her mind if she did!

Of course not. What you expect a Democrat to pay for it once they’re done?

Actually, the intelligence officer is second oldest perception. When Joshua sent his spies to the promissed land there was a prostitute waiting for them.

It is said that politics is the second oldest profession… while it often resembles the first.
