Video: Stewart skewers the left’s paranoia over McCain’s ads

posted at 1:55 pm on August 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

Credit where credit is due. My only quibble is that he seems to think the paranoia’s in earnest. I’m loath to speculate on which liberals genuinely “see” the supposed subtext and which are dishonestly demagoging an issue from which there’s political advantage to be gained, but let’s just say it doesn’t surprise me to find some of the most reliably cartoonish partisans in the media on board with the racism narrative.

Lucky thing for Timothy Noah that he didn’t publish his “skinny = black” opus until late yesterday evening or else he’d have probably made the cut for this segment. As it is, it falls to his fellow lefties at TNR to be embarrassed on his behalf. Such is the backlash against the paranoia, in fact (with as many Democrats detecting no racism in McCain’s ads as those who did, despite having every partisan incentive to do so), that I’m tempted to think maybe we’ve reached some sort of turning point on bad-faith accusations. I don’t quite buy it — it’s simply too valuable a political weapon — but stuff like this does offer at least a whiff of, er, hope and change.

How come no one in the media is talking about this Newsbusters story?

flyfisher on August 5, 2008 at 2:00 PM

The left’s ridiculousness is so severe that even Stewart has to call it out every once in a while. Some sanity remains.

Grafted on August 5, 2008 at 2:01 PM

the left is getting panicky. there like the patriots in last years super bowl..it’s half time and they should be up a couple of touchdowns but instead their tied. nothing seems funny when your the big favorite, your giving 13 points but you’re tied at the half.

DrW on August 5, 2008 at 2:05 PM

The “race genie” skit ran too long.

However, I loved the collage of “card” references.

MadisonConservative on August 5, 2008 at 2:07 PM

Here’s another double standard: if Herbert were a Republican, the left would ridiculing is apparent belief that the Leaning Tower of Pisa is in Germany.

Sean68 on August 5, 2008 at 2:07 PM

Race Genie for the win!

RushBaby on August 5, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Stewart also had a segment about the unease he felt about a young, charasmatic leader rallying large numbers of Germans in public squares.

amerpundit on August 5, 2008 at 2:09 PM

“Barack Obama will teabag America”

haha…

At least Stewart is being fair…

JetBoy on August 5, 2008 at 2:12 PM

lol pretty good. BHO biggest enemy is humor. there is a reason the late night shows and SNL refused to make fun of BHO. and there is a reason why the BHO campiagn frowned on jokes.

humor is the gift of the gods to place those that rise above their quailifications and experience on the proper level. sadly that would bring BHO back down to community organizer not POTUS

unseen on August 5, 2008 at 2:15 PM

That was funny! Low hanging fruit (excuse the pun!), but funny.

4shoes on August 5, 2008 at 2:17 PM

I especially like the part about the 2 black balls.

docdave on August 5, 2008 at 2:18 PM

BHO biggest enemy is humor.

I think this segment is not about Obama but more about the news media’s paranoia. If there is something Stewart hates more than Republicans is the news media. Ironically, he likes the news media when they give him material to bash Republicans with.

terryannonline on August 5, 2008 at 2:19 PM

The Daily Show hits another home run!

sabbott on August 5, 2008 at 2:20 PM

I saw this last night. Very funny.

aero on August 5, 2008 at 2:20 PM

Stewart faces an interesting dillema:

If he tries to maintain his integrity by telling the truth, he will loose his liberal audience.

pseudonominus on August 5, 2008 at 2:20 PM

The New Yorker magazine cover and the ensuing brouhaha from Obama’s supporters — including the claim that there was nothing to make fun of about The One — seems to have woken the staff at The Daily Show up to the fact that if they went along with this unquestioningly, they could very well end up with a show in 2009 where they could never make fun of the new president without being tarred as racists.

So for the time being, the desire by Stewart and crew to both be funny and to have the freedom to make fun of whomever they want — even if they want to target Republicans more than Democrats — takes precedent over demands from the left that Obama be treated with the seriousness and respect of a deity.

jon1979 on August 5, 2008 at 2:21 PM

The next time I want to hurl, I’ll watch Stew-wart.
I think this is infinitely more newsworthy: http://freedomfolks.com/blog/?p=3687
BTW: No question mark was on the original headline, I wonder why was it added. Let me guess…

Isn’t there any part of your brain that screams “NO DON’T FUCKING TYPE THAT!!!”

LimeyGeek on August 5, 2008 at 2:22 PM

If he tries to maintain his integrity by telling the truth, he will loose his liberal audience.

pseudonominus on August 5, 2008 at 2:20 PM

That’s the thing. I think The Daily Show and Colbert are going down in ratings. When you consistently bash just one side you lose a certain audience. When you bash both sides, you open yourself up to bigger market.

terryannonline on August 5, 2008 at 2:23 PM

“Tea bag?” I must live in a cave (thankfully).

Earnest paranoia or dishonest demagoguery.

Obviously, both are registered democrats. The pathetic part is that their votes count just as much as mine.

God save the Republic.

locomotivebreath1901 on August 5, 2008 at 2:24 PM

Oh, I just gotta say: Who really thinks that Stewart ‘dissin’ BO will change anything? If so, why?

Christine on August 5, 2008 at 2:24 PM

The only racist misinformation is coming from the left. Trying to make going to the ballot box into a guilt trip is just business as usual for democrats. Without racism and class envy, they have nothing to present. Clinton, the only democratic president in the last quarter of a century, didn’t receive over 50% of the vote in either election he won. Why should an arrogant, naive empty suit get more?

LimeyGeek on August 5, 2008 at 2:22 PM

Why? I thought it was Stewart’s funniest joke in the segment. What you typed is more offensive than what doc typed.

Like I commented earlier this is not a ‘diss’ on Obama but on the news media. And no it won’t changer anything.

Geez, that’s funny.

It is not a good time when Stewart is doing this and Stephanopoulos simply cannot believe what you’re saying.

Christine on August 5, 2008 at 2:24 PM

I do. I look at BHO campaign as a line of dominos. Once the first fall the rest keeps falling and it will be hard for BHO campaign to stop the fall. Humor is one of those things that can start the fall. BHO is an empety suit that mouths ALL the dems wacko groups manifestos. From no drilling to reducing electricity usage, to continuing sprawl, evil white america, etc. All of these thoughts have been rejected by the Americian people. now we have one man that is trying to form a campaign out oif a mixture of these things. Once the humor walls open up BHO is done.

I’ll pass but if you think what you do with a teabag during making tea and subsitute a male body part for a teabag you get the idea.

unseen on August 5, 2008 at 2:34 PM

I thought it was funny (yet again, I’m a fan of the show), and it kind of deafens anymore leftist “proof” of racism in the ad.

DanStark on August 5, 2008 at 2:34 PM

Good political humor is funny no matter who is involved and between Stewart and Colbert, they’ve got it wrapped up.

flytier on August 5, 2008 at 2:35 PM

terryannonline on August 5, 2008 at 2:27 PM

it’s a start. the longer the MSC people continue to not make fun of BHO the bigger the backlash will be. just like the edwards story embargo. The mainstream commedy people refusing to make fun of BHO will be his undoing IMO.

unseen on August 5, 2008 at 2:36 PM

flyfisher on August 5, 2008 at 2:00 PM

How come no one in the media is talking about this Newsbusters story?

Probably because it isn’t really relevant to the story. McCain didn’t cite Obama on that, and there is no evidence that McCain even knew that Obama himself had said that. If anything, it would warrant a 5 second mention in Brit Hume’s grapevine segment… not much more.

DaveS on August 5, 2008 at 2:37 PM

I haven’t had a tv for years.

Teabag
1. The act squatting over an suspecting victim and placing one’s scrotum in their oral orifice.

Tarred, Jon? …did you just refer to Obama as being Tarred???

How very racist of you.

The Ugly American on August 5, 2008 at 3:29 PM

locomotivebreath, you need to innoculate yourself against the internet.

To do this you must do a Search for the 5 Horrors of the Internet:

1. goatse

2. tubgirl

3. eelgirl

4. 2 girls 1 cup

5. Brian Peppers

Alternatly, you can view the Pain Series on Encyclopedia Dramatica

As I have written since the beginning of the campaign, this tactic will be hauled out at regular intervals and used to great effect. Allah might be able to define it. Goldstein might be able to analyze and critique its psychological underpinnings and origins.

But they can’t stop it nor can they mitigate its effects. It is the major reason we can’t have an intelligent discussion about race in this campaign or at any time. And the fault, dear lefties, lies not in the stars but with you.

And the electorate knows this, and will act to their own liking, without telling anyone a thing.
