Obama on tire inflation: “It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant”

posted at 5:11 pm on August 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

I lost the point of this debate sometime last night. Obama says improved auto maintenance would improve mileage. That’s true. He said last week that “we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups,” which, realistically, is not true and explains why his campaign won’t offer numbers to back up the claim. Follow the ABC link and you’ll find McCain agreeing that we should be more scrupulous about maintenance (“let’s do that”) but warning that it won’t end our dependence on foreign oil. And he’s right — except that Obama never said it would. In which case, what exactly are we debating? McCain’s point is, and should be, that we should do everything possible to lighten the energy burden: Inflate tires, pursue alternative energy, and oh yes, drill. Obama’s the one who’s content with two out of three. Let’s stay on the ball.

His inflating tires numbers have been debunked soundly.

As to his ignorant remark, I would say “pot calling the kettle black” but of course that would be racist.

McCain provoked Obama to step down from the heavens and start wrestling in the political mud. All his transcendent platitudes about hope and change are useless now. He’s just a regular old politician like the rest of them.

Nice strategery there, Maverick!

In which case, what exactly are we debating?

Nothing. Obama is trying to spin his way back into some positive press by clinging to the narrative he likes–and that the media is trying to steer him towards–which is that obviously checking tire pressure is a good thing. But it’s not a “plan” for energy independence, let alone something most people aren’t already doing, which is what I believe Ed wrote about yesterday when this all started up.

I think McCain’s team starting in with the tire gages made the point that Obama has no serious plan, and it worked. Now they need to drop it and step up and get on TV and offer a plan, right now, lest the media have another day to sit around tut-tutting that Republicans are unserious and stunt-driven. Liberals are already out in force right now screeching this point.

Star20 on August 5, 2008 at 5:28 PM

There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. Making sure your tires are properly inflated — simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling — if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You’d actually save just as much!

No, the Obamanation didn’t say that it would eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. As the quote above – taken directly from Ed’s post right here on HA, by the way – says, it would equal the amount we’d get from domestic drilling.

While it’s true that domestinc drilling won’t eliminate the need for foreign oil, McCain’s point still stands. Drill here, drill now!

I’m reminded of the South Park goof on Michael Jackson where he keeps saying “you’re ignorant! you’re ignorant!” while being caught acting weird around kids. The word “ignorant” is very very commonly used among leftists, so that’s why you’re hearing Obama reflexively use it.

If McCain can keep up the pressure on Obama, he’s going to fold like a tent.

Outlander on August 5, 2008 at 5:32 PM

Agreed, psrch. It’s too bad he didn’t specifically say “but that won’t save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, as Obama claimed that it would.” Now, the waters are too muddied and trying to clarify this as it should be is too late. Oh well.

obama says that propert tire inflation will reduce our dependence on forerign oil by 3-4%.

not at all the same thing and probably a groos over-exageration by Senator Obama. a great deal of oil is not even used to produce gasoline. and of the gasoline that is produced, quite a lot is not used to run automobiles. but never mind the facts..they get in the way so often.

“Taking pride in being ignorant.”

This is a great definition of liberal conditioning. It’s always amazed me how they can play dumb collectively without a peep of resistance within the ranks. When a conservative says something preposterous, other conservatives gleefully ridicule the person without mercy.

The only thing that is hard to ascertain is which liberals know better and which liberals don’t. I know they aren’t all stupid. I wonder if they’ve done any studies on the intelligence of cult members like those who join Heaven’s Gate or Jim Jones’ cult. I think they must use similar methods. I used to read DU and other liberal boards and I noticed something that I’ve never seen on conservative boards. They really pat each other on the back a lot when they express the “correct” view and since there is no way for them to judge their views based on reason, it is that feeling of good vibrations directed their way that lets them know that they have assimilated that “correct” outlook.

We have to understand, this guy’s the genuine article. Bill Clinton didn’t give half a crap about liberalism; to him it was just a means to power and absolutely nothing else.

But Obama really thinks this way; he honest-to-God believes the fact that we think HE is an idiot means that we’re against peace, a clean environment and even tire maintenance.

He’s giving us the roadmap to victory right here: take a guy like this seriously, and he won’t just be elected President – for all practical purposes, he’ll be made into a god.

But as long as we don’t by into his own self-image; if we treat this guy as nothing but a buffoon, he has no defense.

BadgerHawk on August 5, 2008 at 6:54 PM

I will grant that a person who has underinflated tires can save, perhaps 4% on gasoline consumption if he properly inflates his tires. That is why most people, by and large, are fairly careful about keeping their tires inflated. In an age of $4/gal oil, you don’t have to remind people too often to do something so obvious.

Now let’s look at what Obama says here…

“But the other thing is, they are making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by three to four percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant.”

In order figure we could “absolutely reduce our oil consumption by three or four percent”, one would have to assume that everybody in America is running around on underinflated tires. Obama assumes that we are too stupid to keep our tires inflated without being told.

And that, in a nutshell, is the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Republicans assume, more or less, that people can take care of themselves and figure out the convoluted matter of proper tire inflation without a lot of intervention. Democrats, on the other hand, start with the assumption that everybody is incapable of keeping their tires inflated properly, and we must be told by the government how to read a tire gauge.

Americans should pick the approach they prefer and vote accordingly. As for me, I don’t appreciate being insulted by an idiot who has probably never handled a tire gauge in his entire life.

I know one voter next door who saw this. Undecided. I’ve been needling him playfully over the past week or so about even thinking about voting Obama. Was outside a little bit ago trying to save what little lawn I have left after two weeks of no rain. He was doing likewise. He piped up, “Did ya see what Obama said about you guys?” He then said, “That seals it. Guess I’ll vote for McCain. The arrogance of that bast*rd saying stuff like that!”

Absolutely nothing scientific about this poll of one…but looks like McCain may not “win” this election, but there is every reason (and hope) that Obama will “lose” this election.

coldwarrior on August 5, 2008 at 8:49 PM

Did I see that correctly; did Obama actually say that McCain should leave the personal attacks alone and debate him on the principle of the problems that Americans face?

Does this idiot actually think we’re really that uninformed? Obama has chicken shitted out of having an open debate with McCain and now he says McCain should debate him… What a freak-n took this joker is. A town-hall format for a debate is a manly forum. It’s no wonder Obama wants no part of this type of forum, as he will have no one to write his answers for him, plus it requires a level of experience and knowledge that Obama knows he doesn’t have. This forum also requires confidence and some balls; Obama’s confidence is dwindling, and the man has no balls.

“actually probably?”

(Must be code.) /s/

My kids used to try this when they were four or five or so. They don’t any more. They are adults now.

When an adult uses this sort of thing…don’t believe asny other word he/she says. It is called equivocation…is the same as prevarication. (Quibbling, for those of you familiar with the US Military Academy Honor Code, right up there with Lie, Cheat or Steal.) If you try to nail someone down on something they said, they will almost always fall back on that “well I said probably” as if that will get them off the hook. It is also a common tactic among common street hustlers. But, when you see someone so facile in the routine use of equivocation in their speech, as is Obama…it shows a pathology.

And is very content with his job. Says his favorite part is listening to Rush everyday. Well, maybe they are a bit different. But not much.
