New third-party ad: Obama no longer the biggest celebrity in the race; Update: Her plan’s better than Obama’s, says McCain camp

She’s got a sense of humor, a thoughtful energy policy, and nearly as much federal legislative experience as Barry O. If grotesque overexposure and grandiose ego are now prerequisites for the presidency, then the choice is … actually, the choice still isn’t clear, is it? Exit question: Way better than Bob Barr, though, right?
Update: Hot.
In the unkindest cut of all, McCain’s spokesperson Tucker Bounds tells TMZ that on the subject of energy, Paris is deeper than Barack. He says, “Sounds like Paris is taking the ‘All of the Above’ energy approach that John McCain has advocated — both alternatives and drilling. Perhaps the reality is that Paris has a more substantive energy plan than Barack Obama.”

You’re right. Trolls feed on confrontation.

Wow. You must be really, really smart. Would you please school one of the few remaining morons who will not vote for McCain on the positions that Bob Barr currently holds on the issues that are pathetic? Please, use his website and school me on how his position on the issues is pathetic. Jeez, I mean I could at least respect a person selling principle down the river if there was a new novel reason for it - but for a carbon copy of the past eight years? McCain is pathetic, and people like you who, like a battered wife, are willing to accept the treatment of the Republicans in order to keep a democrat from getting elected, are pathetic.

You know, I gotta tell ya. The more McCain and his campaignd pokes fun at Obama, the more playful and, dare I say it, youthful he looks. The more Obama whines and cries the older and curmudgeonly he looks.
Weight of Glory on August 5, 2008 at 8:45 PM
I’ll try, but since Mr. Barr seems to have made a hobby out of changing his positions on numerous issues, I doubt my analysis will be relevant tomorrow, when he decides to change them again. Earlier he was just pandering to the LPers. Now he has to pander to everybody.
All of the below are from his campaign’s website:
Ahh, I see we have the Ron Paul “They hate us because we’re over there” theory on islamofascism. That must be it!
Mmmhmm. It’s all fear (or “scare”) mongering. Nothing to be alert or aware of. No legitimate threat to the United States and it’s people. We’re all perfectly safe.
But, when we do, Mr. Barr, you oppose it (or actually, vote for it, then go and say you oppose it). Which is it? I’m very confused? Can you have a triple flip flop? We’re getting into some Kerry-esque territory here.
I don’t mind most of Mr. Barr’s domestic policies, but he won’t have time to enact them (even if he would end up enacting them…you don’t really know what this guy actually believes) if we’re being nuked by the Iranians or fighting active terror cells on our own soil.
————————
P.S. When did the “Issues” tab of a candidate’s website become the go-to place for finding out who to vote for. They’re almost always filled with buzzwords and vague descriptions of policy. Barr’s is no exception.

I have been thinking about this. Paris just basically described the avg joe’s view on energy policy. which corresponds to the REpubs plans. The RNC should put out an ad saying they are happy that Paris has embraced the “all of the above” energy plan of the REPub House. And that they hope she will use her celebrity to help get their shared plan passed.

When grown men and women don’t know the difference between loose and lose, we know we’re in trouble. Apologies for calling you pathetic earlier. I do respect actual Libertarians that hold those beliefs and choose to vote for Barr based on that. What I don’t respect is people trying to frame him as the conservative alternative to McCain. Barr is not conservative any more, he is a Libertarian and he holds the views of the Libertarian Party. These include weak national security and liberal stances on immigration (which seem to be clouded on his website by a storm of campaign double speak). I do respect a lot of his domestic policies like free market education (which apparently one of our commenters would benefit from), strong compliance with the 2nd Amendment, and protecting life. I just don’t like being lectured to that you’re not a conservative if you vote for McCain. Barr is not a viable alternative for conservatives that care about national defense. Apologies to you if you weren’t trying to frame him as such and were simply a Libertarian that normally votes LP and wouldn’t vote for any of the Republicans (besides Paul) anyway trying to express their point. I’m a little bit trigger happy with the pro-Barr people because they always seem to be uninformed on what he actually believes post-transformation from GOP to LP and try to pass him off as being the “pure conservative”. I’m not trying to bash people that are actually informed on Barr’s beliefs and agree with him, just people that use Barr in an attempt to make people that are voting for the “lesser of two evils” feel guilty.

Mark Jaquith on August 5, 2008 at 10:45 PM
No worries. I am a libertarian who used to be a Republican until I matured philosophically and politically (not to say that those who are Republicans are not mature - I am just talking about me). I would label myself a conservative/libertarian not a anarcho-libertarian. I do hate how many on this site immediately start calling Barr supporters idiots/pathetic/traitors and then call us trolls when we defend ourselves. I do disagree with you that Barr is weak on national security. I believe that Libertarians are just not pre-emptive in pursuing national security. The Libertarians wholeheartedly believe in National Defense, but that it can be accomplished without trying to expand/maintain an empire around the world. I am not naive enough to believe that we wouldn’t ever be attacked if we weren’t involved everywhere in the world, but you cannot also be naive to believe that we don’t make enemies when we do get involved around the world. I have fought in this war (commanded an infantry company in theater for a year) and have spent much time getting advanced degrees studying this topic, and I would argue that fighting this enemy is like killing mosquitos - you can kill alot of mosquitos, but you are never going to kill them all. And as long as there are a few around, they will come back. I don’t know the answers, but our country cannot afford to keep fighting this war at the rate we are. That is a fact. Nevertheless, it is good to keep talking and exploring this.

It is a sad sad day for America when Parris Hilton actually talks more sense than either candidate.
That limited part maybe the catch-22 but in reality we should be selecting choice “D. All of the above”. Alternative fuels, drilling, deregulation of current techs and new untried techs, etc……….
C-Low on August 5, 2008 at 11:44 PM
Wow, I’m actually impressed. Her ad, based solely upon substance, is quite honestly better than most, if not all, ads I’ve seen for any candidate thus far. What keeps me from laughing though is the fact that the folks typically influenced by such ads will probably vote for Paris because her ad is so much better. (Don’t worry though, she’s not yet 35.)
Send_Me on August 5, 2008 at 11:45 PM
Admittedly that’s pretty hilarious. However her “energy plan” pretty much mirrors the Republican’s “All of the Above” Energy Strategy
60B on August 5, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Interesting. Just searched recent Tweets on topic “Paris Hilton,” and the video has definitely gone completely viral already - something like a million hits in the last hour alone. What’s interesting is that 99% of tweeters seem to feel it’s an anti-McCain slam and a highly effective one at that. I can see how they would interpret it that way, as a “hit back” at the implied insult McCain dealt her, but I think she hits Obama pretty hard, too, if indirectly. She makes BOTH candidates look foolish, plus the punditry that inflated the significance of the ad in the first place. And her “energy plan” is clearly closer to McCain’s than Obama’s, which ultimately makes the “ad” sympathetic to McCain in my opinion.
Based on the popularity of this video, I fully expect “Paris for President” merchandise to be everywhere by tomorrow morning. She’s going to be this year’s Pedro for the fed-up-with-both-parties apathetic crowd.

jerrytbg on August 6, 2008 at 12:23 AM
So, if I understand you, if one is “fed up with both parties”, then that person is “apathetic”?
Here’s my reasoning, if you care to read, for not voting for either candidate and voting my conscience.
1. 2000: Honestly, how different were Bush and Gore? How large was the workable pool of voters (# of swing/moderate voters?)
2. 2004: How different were Bush and Kerry? I mean, come on, how many liberal or incompetent policy proposals has Bush supported? Did that pool of workable voters increase or decrease in size?
3. 2008: We see that McCain and Obama are very much alike, focusing not on their bases of support, but rather on the lukewarm crowd, the folks who are swayed by cheesy commercials, the ones who really don’t care about politics but want a good show. The far left is alienated, as well as the far right.
2012 prediction: The candidates will be even more alike than they are now, and we’ll once again ask ourselves, “which of the evils should we choose?” The problem though is that the differences will not be as apparent.
Conclusion: Unless we wish to continue down this road, where neither party cares to remain responsive to its base, we must make them realize that we are still sentient beings who vote with our brains and conscience, not out of convenience.
“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.” ~John Quincy Adams
