Did Obama endorse rolling blackouts?

Barack Obama repeated his call for a 15% reduction in electrical demand in Youngstown, Ohio, and held California up as a model for the rest of the nation to follow. Claiming that the Golden State made great strides towards efficiency, Obama apparently forgot the travails California went through:
Finally, I will call on businesses, government, and the American people to meet the goal of reducing our demand for electricity 15% by the end of the next decade. This is by far the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to reduce our energy consumption – and it will save us $130 billion on our energy bills. One report found that right here in Ohio, improvements in energy efficiency can help save homes and businesses $1.5 billion in energy costs by 2020.
The state of California has implemented such a successful efficiency strategy that while electricity consumption grew 60% in this country over the last three decades, it didn’t grow at all in California. There is no reason we can’t do the same thing all across America.
Let’s emulate California? First, California didn’t cut their demand; they only kept it from increasing. Next, people may remember how well California’s energy policy worked over the last two decades. The aging infrastructure, price mandates, and botched privatization led the state into years of rolling blackouts, where utilities simply cut off supply in order to compensate for an inability to meet demand. Governor Gray Davis got recalled from office over the issue, but the blackouts continued for years afterward.
And again, California never did reduce demand, not even by 5%, let alone 15%. I’m not sure Californians would feel like a great example of an energy policy that worked, and I doubt the rest of the nation feels differently. And Obama once again repeated his pledge to get a million more plug-hybrids (at 150 mpg!) on the road while cutting electrical demand, a neat trick that Obama still hasn’t explained.
Obama also talked about jobs, but for some reason didn’t mention the jobs that would get created through a responsible energy policy:
The payoff from these investments in renewable energy sources will be renewable energy jobs across Ohio and across America. Now, I know that over the past eight years, you’ve lost more 236,000 manufacturing jobs in this state. But I also know that Ohio has the second highest potential of all fifty states to create new wind energy manufacturing jobs – and investing in wind power could increase workers’ wages in Ohio by more than $3.5 billion through the year 2020. I also know that with the right investments, this state could save $24 billion a year that you spend importing energy, and instead, power two million homes using wind power.
Eventually, when mass-production sources of energy are found, it will result in jobs. Those will come much later than even Obama’s pessimistic predictions of oil production from domestic drilling, at least ten years out and maybe more than that. Domestic drilling, however, would create jobs now. ANWR alone would create 750,000 jobs, and deep-sea drilling more than that. It would create American jobs at home as investments increased in our own resources — and could easily be done at the same time and in parallel to work developing energy sources of the future.
Why not do both? Obama never explains that, just as he never explains how we’ll cut 15% of our electrical demand while transferring vehicles to electricity.

Or something like that.

Ed, you forgot to mention that California was also buting a bunch of Electricity from other State to compensate as well. Utah, Washington and I forget the other State was ticked and was getting pennies on the dollar as the California Electric Companies were raking in the money.
Also this is a median number, it may become more depending on how much, if any, drilling is allowed.
upinak on August 5, 2008 at 1:39 PM
CA is keeping a lid on demand by refusing to increase supply and denuding the state of manufacturing jobs and facilities. Companies are moving out due to the high tax and regulation conditions to more favorable climes. popultion growth is not due to US citizens moving in, there is a net outflow there. Immigrants, (legal or otherwise) abound and are making lots of babies.
Employment growth is highest in government, even as they go broke.
Obama’s dream is for such a diseased state to become the norm for the country.

Obama’s lords would revel in the hardships that blackouts produce. Drive the public crazy to take whatever the government allows, and say “merci beaucoup” to Obama for nothing but pain and hardship.
AS IF energy is to be denied as the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Keep us all dumb?
OBAMA IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL RACIST treating all Americans like slaves. His cowardice and his intellectual fraud have been exposed. He is now reacting with an inferiority complex, tightening the screws while telling us to sing his praises.
He even got the “tune-up” advice wrong since modern cars post late 1980’s don’t get “tune-ups” since their engines are computer generated. Barack is out of touch with everything except Marx.

I don’t get it. Where did the 15% number come from? If you put out goals like this they need to be tied to some tangible outcome. Why 15% and not 10% or 20%? And what does it do for us? Yes, energy consumption will be down but that may not even translate into “savings” if the cost per Kilowatt rises as a result of less usage.

It struck me as I was tihnking today that Barry’s entire plan is extremely self-destructive.
It has no practical ideas, he wants to cut us off from being able to use gasoline, expects all of us to spend a ton of cash to be able to access the power network…
He is a nut.

California is pretty blessed, weather-wise.
It would be interesting to know how the housing bubble affected our energy use, too. With easy refinancing, flipping, home equity loans, and rapidly rising equity, I imagine installing new energy-efficient appliances and air conditioners was pretty common during the last few years.
MayBee on August 5, 2008 at 1:48 PM
Let’s not forget that if Barry gets the presidency, he and his little buddies in Congress have made it a point to go after big bad OIL. The fallout from that will be thousands of jobs lost by people who work for the oil companies. I have yet to hear him address his solution for those people — or are they supposed to go get jobs at the alternative energy factories (despite the fact that they aren’t trained in that area)? Unemployment will be at its highest level ever if Barry and the rest of the Dem morons win big this fall. I guess taxes will have to be raised even higher to pay for all the unemployment. Change we can all believe in, from someone who has the judgment to lead…

Why must we decrease electricity by 15%? Just build a new plant.
You can not conserve your way out of a recession. You just end up paying more for less as those utility companies raise their rates to compensate for less energy usage.
economic expansion means using more energy not less.

I don’t understand this concept of reduction of electricity use. We are a civilization based on electricity and we should be advocating the expansion of electrical uses rather than the reduction. Imagine how much oil consumption could be reduced if houses and buildings were changed to electric heat. Our problem is not how much electricity we use but how much the environmental movement has restricted us from expanding. We do not have a shortage of resources but rather an abundance of environmentalists. I vote for a 15% reduction in environmentalists rather than electricity.

No he has a very detailed plan on how to destroy this country.
He does not want low energy prices. Her understands low energy prices brings great economic growth. The environmental wackos/communists don’t want this country to get stronger. we have a 13trllion economony 4 times the size of the next largest economy Japan. In order to change the world to a less USA centric place the USA economy must brought down to the other countries levels therefore high energy prices in the USa is needed to accomplish this goal. So you keep gasoline prices high, you change over to electricity while limiting electric production thus making all energy in the USA expensive. The freed up gasoline will then be used by China, India and others to fuel their economy and become the USA equal thereby “as the peace in our time folks believe” ensureing peace has everyone is on equal footing and then no one has a reason to go to war.

10 Planks of the Communist Manifesto
1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
6. Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equable distribution of the population over the country.
10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, &c., &c.[4]
How many of these 10 do democrats support? 8 or 9 maybe? All 10 perhaps?

Unicorn flatulence is an abundant, powerful, and clean source of natural gas. The self styled President Obama should have advocated that as an energy source.
Harnessing the flatulence of mythical creatures is about as realistic a scenario as cutting the United States’ energy demands by 15% and expecting anything other than economic collapse to occur.

When has he promoted a policy that inspires people to reach higher. Let’s cut back on our energy use and become as weak as possible. I’m all for conservation, but what about something more to help make this country great.
Paul-Cincy on August 5, 2008 at 2:19 PM
It won’t save consumers a penny if Cap and Trade goes into effect, it will only mean you will have to find a way to get by with 15% less energy. But with Cap and Trade, you may be paying two or three times as much for the amount you are still using. Thus your $100.00 electric bill will become a $300.00 electric bill but you will be receiving LESS energy.
BO, your plan stinks, DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW!! BUILD MORE COAL FIRED PLANTS AND NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS AND REFINERIES. WE WANT ENERGY INDEPENDENCE FOR AMERICA NOW AND IN THE FUTURE!! AND NO CAP AND TRADE SCAMS!!

Per US DOE, here, California’s electrical consumption from 1980 through 2005 grew at an annual rate of 0.9%. If you take it straight, that’s 22.5% in 25 years compared to Obama’s claim of 0% in 30 years. It’s ranking is 30th of the 50 states.

True, but that’s not the lesson of this speech. This is all about a demonstration of his stupidity. He doesn’t have the wherewithal or want to invest the energy into properly considering what he just said, so he just says it as if he believes it, but he doesn’t apparently even know what he said.
Reduce electrical consumption while switching millions of cars from gasoline to electricity. Riiiiggghhhttt.

Don’t you mean its ranked 30th of the 57 states????
and just how much energy do those other 7 states really use ???

D$mmit, I took it off the wrong chart. California electrical consumption rose by 1.6% from 1980 to 2005. That would make it 47.5% over 25 years and they are ranked 39th. It was the total energy consumption which rose by 0.9%.

FIFY.
I much prefer the “Logan’s Run” option.

The Democrats are against discrimination so much that they’ve lost all ability to discriminate:
Between stupid and reasonable,
Between good and evil,
Between dangerous and safe,
Between sane and insane,
Between taxes and investments,
Between waste and thrift,
Between our money and their money,
…but they still retain the ability to hate everyone who is not just like them!!
