Boehner calls bluff of “pro-drilling” Dems: Prove you’re not liars by joining with us now; Update: New grassroots website supporting House protest launches

The first dividends from Politico’s article are paid. From Boehner’s office:

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement in response to an article in today’s Politico that suggests Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has secretly signaled to rank-and-file House Democratic lawmakers that they should feel free to portray themselves publicly as pro-drilling if it helps them politically:

“My message to Democratic lawmakers is this: if you’re really for increased American energy production, then prove it by putting it in writing. Sign the discharge petitions House Republicans are circulating that will force votes on energy legislation Speaker Pelosi refuses to bring to the floor. And sign onto the American Energy Act, our ‘all of the above’ plan to increase conservation, innovation, and American energy production, instead of doing the Speaker’s bidding by voting against bringing it to a vote. If you aren’t willing to put it in writing, you’re fooling no one. You’re siding with the Speaker of the Drill-Nothing Congress and radical special interests that favor higher gas prices, at the expense of energy-strapped American families.”

“This cynical strategy is disgustingly dishonest. Without any real solutions to help Americans who are struggling with record-high gas prices, it appears the Democratic leadership has hit on a new plan: deceive. Deceive the press, deceive its members, and deceive the American people. Democratic members have a ‘pass’ from their leaders to talk about drilling at home, while the liberal Democratic leadership – which is beholden to special interests that want higher gas prices – plays ‘rope-a-dope’ back in Washington, ensuring there is no vote to help the American people before November. It’s cynical, dishonest, and wrong – and it won’t work.”

Emphasis mine. I honestly don’t see what Pelosi has to lose by letting a vote come to the floor — or rather, I don’t see how she loses more by letting the vote happen now than by suppressing all attempts and letting the GOP bludgeon the Democrats with this issue all the way to November. If they agree to expand drilling, they can always undo it (at least in part) next year by sneaking the rollback into a more comprehensive energy package. The GOP will scream but the election will be long over and Obama, assuming he wins, will be enjoying a honeymoon period which the Dems can use to blunt Republican criticism. Making a stand now, when this is really the only weapon conservatives have to wield against them, seems stupid, unless the Dems expect the price of oil will drop sufficiently by next year that public pressure for drilling will dissipate and they won’t have to act at all. I’ll leave it to economists to determine whether that’s a reasonable expectation or not, but there are extraordinary yet plausible reasons to believe the price might actually skyrocket. In which case, I guess Pelosi figures they’ll jump off that bridge when they come to it.

Update: Conservative new-media types strike while the iron is hot.

I agree. I don’t think she foresaw this, however. With Bush unwilling to call a special session over energy perhaps her calculus is that it will not be impactful if she interprets that as the R party not united on the issue.

NO!
Making a stand now, on drilling for oil, means that win or lose the Republicans are not going down with out a fight. They’re not going to roll over. They are fighting back!

That’s the way you win. Standing up for the American People, standing up for what is in the best interest of the United States, standing up for freedom, and prosperity is never a losing bet.

Trying to weasel your way out of a problem, the way the democrats are doing it, trying to be all things to all people is a guaranteed recipe for defeat. Stand for something.

Well it is about time Boehner pulled the Blue Dogs card. They did not sign the discharge petition on an immigration bill Pelosi blocked that they supposedly supported, make them pay at home. The GOP should start making noise in their districts, running ads , going door to door etc. We have a golden opportunity to put the squeeze on the Blue Dogs. Heath Schuler would be a good target. Make him come to Washington and sigh the petition. His name recognition would almost force every other Blue Dog to follow suit.

1. If the Dems win everything in Nov and we have no energy bill in place, oil prices will jump back up and it will be too late for us to do anything about it.

2. Can we quantify how much money the Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth, PETA, et al give to the Dems? Let’s put those numbers up against donations by oil interests.

For decades, anti-energy, left-wing politicians have advocated higher prices and less energy. They were going to save the environment by punishing Americans into driving less and driving smaller cars. They favor a policy of no oil and gas exploration, no use of coal, and no development of nuclear power.

The result has been that over the last three decades, America has relied more and more on foreign oil rather than American oil, and our nation’s power grid has been stretched thin because litigation and regulation has made it so difficult to build new sources of electricity.

Newt Gingrich

1) Who caused this mess? The Democrats did, as Newt explains above.

2) When did oil prices start to skyrocket? Shortly after Democrats took over the House and Senate two years ago.

If America wants energy independence, the Democrats must go !!

Spoken like a man that does not understand the market. the moment that the congress opens up drilling Oil falls 20-$40 per bll. Jus tthe treat of having trillions of blls of new oil coming online will send oil down like an elavator.

this will show that the dems do not know economics, it will also show the americian people that the dems economic plan is flawed.

Pelosi has a lot to lose by bringing it to a vote. The entire thought that the dems are the better party on economic issues. a vote on oil could do to the dems on economic policy what 9/11 did to them on forgien policy. It could be game changing.

Pelosi also has with Nader waiting in the wings the chance of pissing off the hard left and making nader a protest vote come NOV.

She has the House and senate at stake also.

#dontgo is an expression of what America needs, but not where it’s heading. #dontgo is the warning bell to a nation that is hungry for change, but looking in the wrong direction. #dontgo is a message to all of America, Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

3 you have smelled him
4 you will eat him

Proved Undeveloped;
1 The fish is onyour hook in the water by your boat
2 you are ready to net him
3 you can tell how big he looks
4 they are always bigger in the water

Probable;
1 There are fish in the lake
2 You may have caught some yesterday
3 You may even be able to see them, but you have not caught any today

Possible;
1 There is water in the lake
2 Someone may habe told you there are fish in the lake
3 you have your boat on the trailer, but you may go play golf today.

1GooDDaDDy on August 5, 2008 at 4:37 PM

alphie:

That is absurd. No one is saying it will only be 1% in 20 years either.

The truth is that the price of oil is largely dependent on futures markets and if the markets are not concerned with supply disruptions and shortfalls in the future then there will be less pressure on prices.

Whatever else is true, increasing supply will have a lot more impact on prices than inflating tires will.

Besides, these are domestic producers we are talking about here and I thought that Democrats supported more domestic industry and production and less foreign trade and imports.

Terrye on August 5, 2008 at 4:39 PM

… the dems do not know economics … Unseen

Correct. Bush repealed the Executive Ban and the prices of oil dropped before an extra barrel was ever drilled, in fact NOT ONE extra barrel was drilled and the price of oil still came down. Just imagine what would happen if the Congress ended their ban too? The price would drop and the Dems would be the big heroes.

the oil shale holds between 1-8 TRILLION blls. Most estmates says 3 trillion I give it at 2 trillion. Anwr holds 40 billion but that is what they said about pruedoe bay also and it yeilded more than that. The OCS it is said holds as much as 80 billion bll and that is without a full exploration of the area because it has been illegal to even explore. Because the environmental wackos believe if we find it and catalog it then there will be even more pressure to drill it so they don’t allow exploration.

So yes trillions coming on the market. And that doesn’t even bring natural gas into the debate which could be as major as the oil we will pump.

Spirit of 1776:

This is not about Bush. Bush can not make the Congress come back and vote on an energy bill. I think some people are not understanding this. If he called them back, they would just do the same things they were doing before they left.

No, this is about the Republicans in Congress putting the screws to the Democratic leadership in Congress about the way they do business. {or don’t do business depending on how you look at it.}

Terrye on August 5, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Pardon me for saying so, but this is a relatively silly argument. Let me rephrase it for you:

“The executive can’t do something that he is alloted power to do. But the legislative branch can work without a quorum (which will lead to no direct legislative result).”

Re: President – How about, ‘yes, he can’. [chorus of young voters] If the energy issue is important to the Republicans and the American people, then it would be extremely useful for President Bush to call special session. The power can be used to keep Congress from shirking an issue. However, if, as you claim this is just about the way the leadership works within the Congress, then it’s not about energy, it’s inter-office bickering and not worth the base getting excited over.

I think electricity was one of man’s greatest enveavors. And then broadband… but that is just me.

Geology is and has been around… for ages. Burn rocks (lignite), using flint or chert for arrows, finding oily substances and using them during wars or for lamps and fires… hmmmm Oil has been around quite a while.

Does anyone know who is down there now? Senator wise?

I think he was saying that yes he can call congress back but congress doesn’t have to do anything they don’t want to do. they can sit and talk about the fishing in fl or the windsurfing in MA. the presidentr can not force them to deal with the problem. He can just force them to be present.

Yes, the point I made earlier (which was what was challenged) is that it would be helpful if Bush would call them into session.

Because he will not, or at least has not, it is not difficult to understand how Pelosi thinks to just run out the clock on the gathered Republicans. If the head of the Republican party doesn’t think it’s important enough to call them back…

Anyway, if he calls them back with the mandate to address energy concerns then he has robbed them of the adorning vote. Which was the tactic used to avoid the debate in the first place.

Spirit:

Bush can not set the agenda. He called off the executive ban on drilling. He said Congress should do the same. If he calls them back for some socalled quorum, they just go on doing what they have been doing…only they make it about Bush. They say Bush is stepping on their toes, Bush is trying to set the agenda for Congress etc.

Bush has done his part for all the good it has done him as far as some members of his own party are concerned, but he can not set the agenda or give orders to the Democratically controlled House of Representatives. As much as some people would like to pretend otherwise Pelosi runs the show over there. In fact it seems to me that I recall some people saying they would not vote in 2006 because they wanted to send a message, teach the GOP a lesson and let the Democrats have it for a couple of years. They did that and in the process they made their President a lame duck.

Terrye on August 5, 2008 at 5:14 PM

it appears the Democratic leadership has hit on a new plan: deceive.

What’s new about this plan? It’s been their modus operandi for at least 40 years.

MarkTheGreat on August 5, 2008 at 5:15 PM

I just received an email from my representative in Congress in response to a comment on this demonstration by the Republicans in the House.

His response was effective, professional and followed the Democrat Party line (he is a Democrat). I am working on, what I hope will be, and equally professional and effective rebuttal of those Democrat Party talking points.

This ’stunt’ by the Republicans has been noticed. We are being heard, they are running scared having to support the party line.

Democracy in action, ya gotta love it.

That is not fair. Bush has never said he did not think the issue important , in fact as I said he lifted the ban and called a press conference to tell the American people that the Congress should do the same thing. He can not make them debate this, or vote on it, or even talk about it.

Exactly… oh good Lord let them NOT have a break! Not like anyone here hasn’t had to call off a vacation or something and have to go back to life and work!

unpinak:

Yes, make them do their jobs. It is not Bush’s place to do that for them. He can not anyway. That is what co equal means. They will just prattle on about windfall profits taxes and inflating tires and emptying the reserve and then Pelosi would either come up with some toothless compromise of nothing at all and they would end the session and go home. The idea that the President can mandate that Congress do anything is just not so.

And he can not do much himself if they do not send him something. That is what gridlock means.

Terrye on August 5, 2008 at 5:22 PM

The longer the democrats stay away, and the less Bush is involved … the better.

darwin on August 5, 2008 at 5:24 PM

Terrye:

Let me repeat. It would be helpful if Bush called them back. That is not “Bush is to blame”, that is not “Bush is evil”, etc. It’s “It would be helpful if Bush called them back”.

It is helpful if the issue is as pressing as they claim and it’s helpful to present a united front.

And I’ve never considered what the Dems spin would be to be of utmost importance.

Thanks for the two chuckles, though:

some socalled quorum

What is this word “numbers” of which you speak?

They did that and in the process they made their President a lame duck.

Yea, those silly conservatives that denied him a 3rd term.

I think bush should call them back. I understand nothing will get done but like Truman it would allow McCain to give them hell on the Senate Floor. I could see a debate on the Senate floor like those of old Rome. where BHO and McCain square off over energy policy. It would make the debates after the conventions look like play acting.

Looks like the lib nutcases have finally infiltrated the #dontgo Twitter feed by putting the #dontgo tag on a bunch of nonsense posts and/or trollish anti-Tea Party comments. I’m surprised it took them so long. They let an amiable, excited, positive Republican discussion about how to help America go on in public for a couple of days before pooping all over it as their only defense.

For you, terrye,

Section 3 – State of the Union, Convening Congress

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

[The Executive is, in fact, given power that does not render him helpless to just sit back and wait for Congress's bills]
