Wisdom: Don’t expect GOP VP pick soon, but Dems sooner than later

Wiser heads have prevailed in the John McCain campaign in terms of strategic timing for the announcement of McCain’s running mate, according to Politico. Over the last couple of weeks, rumors have floated that McCain would announce his decision early in order to gain media attention during a Barack Obama lovefest. Now, though, the campaign has decided to follow conventional strategy, in the most literal sense:
John McCain’s extended circle is divided on whether he should announce his running mate in the immediate days ahead—but the Republican is more likely to wait for Barack Obama to announce his choice first, according to advisers.
While McCain’s aides are tight-lipped about revealing anything related to what has so far been a leak-free process, some of his advisers state a clear preference for not firing the valuable political bullet too soon.
By waiting to make a major announcement in the window after Obama’s much-anticipated acceptance speech August 28 at Invesco Field and before he receives his party’s nomination the following week, for example, McCain would be able to quickly shift the focus of the race following the Democratic convention.
Both candidates only get one shot at the media attention their selection of running mates will bring. Timing is critical to succeeding in starving the opponent of oxygen when needed most. The McCain team thought that it might make sense to announce it while Obama traveled abroad, fearful that the fawning media attention Obama received would boost him out of sight. However, not only did Obama’s edge quickly dissipate, Obama wound up in worse position afterwards than when he left for Europe and the war zones.
The timing for McCain is much more obvious than with Obama. Thanks to a strange decision by the DNC, Obama only has three days to enjoy the media afterglow before he gets forgotten in the coverage of the Republican convention. If McCain announces the VP choice the morning after Obama’s acceptance speech, he will not only own the weekend cycle leading into the convention but cut short the free media exposure of Obama after the convention.
For Obama, the VP announcement could come any time. In fact, with his slide in the polls threatening to make 2008 look like 1972 and the McGovern campaign, it might make sense to announce this week. If he doesn’t pick Hillary, it gives her supporters more time to “get over it” than if it happens at the convention. The Democrats don’t want drama in Denver — they want a Unityfest, and to get there, they need to end the speculation quickly.
Democrats need a momentum shift now, not later. Don’t be surprised if Obama announces it this week.

The Ultimate Death-Blow To B.O.’s Campaign:
VP Nominee JOHN MURTHA!!!!
pilamaye on August 4, 2008 at 11:17 AM
He better act fast since his water-carriers at MessNBC will be going wall-to-wall with the Olympics starting later this week.
JammieWearingFool on August 4, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Jammie, are you saying Chrissy the Leg-Tingler and Olberdummy wouldn’t bust into Olympics coverage to bring us The Messiah’s VP pick?
That’d be sacrilege.
MrScribbler on August 4, 2008 at 11:24 AM
The inner circle is right. We have just seen that the polling “surge” from Obama’s Worldwide Victory Tour lasted all but a few days and is now POOF!!
So why try to counter an expected bounce that aint much of a bounce??? Let Obama go first, make his move, and then counter it and lead right into the post Labor Day campaign.
I always thought the speculation about McCain naming his VP first was just a lot of smoke designed to keep speculation going without any real commitment. I think the REAL onus is on Obama and HIS choice… are the armies of feminist Hillary lovers going to be appeased or PO’d at the choice? The election may well ride on that outcome…

Amazing with all the coverage of the messiah he just can not break away from McCain….maybe the american people are not as dumb as the msm, libs, soros, etc. think
robo on August 4, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Great idea.
Let Ubama pick Kaine first and then Mccain will counter with Mike Huckabee and win in a landslide.
SaintOlaf on August 4, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Obama has less to gain but a whole lot more to lose in his VP than McCain does. Those women are not going to be happy campers if he picks anyone other than Hill but i can’t seem him doing so. If McCain picks a strong conservative it will help mollify the base I believe. He stands to gain most from a good choice, ‘the one’ looks to be in some trouble no matter what choice he makes.
dustoffmom on August 4, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Dang, NOW the right VP thread for my earlier post appears:
It will do no harm to cede Obambi the 3 days of media fawning before the Repubs get started – hell, that’s just MSM business as usual. But everyone loves suspense, so build it, use it and then surprise everyone with a bold, conservative, identity-politics equalizer. Please?
Fishoutofwater on August 4, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Obama has to get the focus off of his empty suit and on to something else, so he can try on some new flip-flops while the press focuses on his, “WELL CHOSEN, GENIUS of a choice, Vice Presidential Running Mate, certainly a better choice than McCain could POSSIBLY EVER CHOOSE.”
originalpechanga on August 4, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Yeah, especially since the DNC begins the day after the closing ceremonies. It’ll be non-stop coverage until then.
amerpundit on August 4, 2008 at 11:33 AM
Let Ubama pick Kaine first and then Mccain will counter with
Mike HuckabeeLieberman andwin in a landslidelose anyway.Fixed it for you.

Tales from the Obama-side #3:
So, I’m on family vacation from Atlanta, up in central PA.
Yearly family reunion time.
The “Pittsburgh” side of the family is heavily represented.
Blue-collar, Patriotic, working class, farmers, Military Vets, mostly white, but some Latin American mixed in.
Democratic for 60+ years; since the New Deal, FDR etc.
Never met a Democrat they didn’t love; reflexively voting for everyone: McGovern, Carter, Dukkakis, Mondale, Clinton, Gore, and even John Kerry.
After dancing around the topic, due to “PD-ness” for a day, the absolute RESENTMENT comes pouring out in dozens of conversations over two days on Obama:
“Cold day in hell before I vote for him…”
“DANGEROUS”
“Most Dangerous…”
“Fraud”
“Liar”
“Hollow Suit”
“Marxist”
“Can’t believe what has happened to our Party”
Now, I have used those phrases and comments vis a vis Obama in the past.
But this WASN’T me!
Just like my brother, who had been a dyed-in-the-wool Clintonite for the past 16 years, and who has told me he’s voting for McCain; the relatives at the family reunion have NEVER voted “Republican” in 60 years!
Just like the Asian community down in Atlanta, a natural Democratic special interest group that is saying they think “Obama” is dangerous; I’m starting to think the National Polls are NOT picking up on the dangerous undercurrents out there, AGAINST Obama.
I was afraid that the vast majority of Americans didn’t “get it” vis a vis this fraud.
My personal experiences over the past month, are telling me that not only does the average American “get it”; but that there may be a large, unreported-by the in-the-tank-MSM-for-Obama crowd, backlash against Obama, that may not show up, anywhere, until Election day.

Looks like the Lightworker’s Birth Certificate matter has taken another twist.
What a bizarre, bizarre time we live in.
wccawa on August 4, 2008 at 11:40 AM
“Running Mate” sounds more like a Bill Clinton speciality.
Dr. Charles G. Waugh on August 4, 2008 at 11:40 AM
I’m waiting with baited breath to hear the MSM’s reporting on the cons and cons of McCain’s Veep choice.

Whatevs.

I’ll make this prediction:
Obama will pick his VP during either then opening or closing ceremony of the Olympics
LordDaMan on August 4, 2008 at 11:47 AM
There’s an Olympics?
wccawa on August 4, 2008 at 11:48 AM
Barack Obama/Sean Penn ‘08!
Akzed on August 4, 2008 at 11:53 AM
And at the indicated site, we find this:
So what can we conclude? Is Obama really Obamette, a woman?
Oh God, how I love the internet!

What’s a KOS? COLB=certificate of live birth.
Fishoutofwater on August 4, 2008 at 12:02 PM
McCain will announce Crist in due time…
heh…has there always been this much edge-of-your-seat anticipation and speculation over a veep choice?
An Obama veep will be an important addition, but a McCain veep isn’t going to make a difference. I almost wish McCain would pick Palin or Jindal, just so some of the McCain-deranged (and I say that with love!) might take that “second look” at the Mav.
JetBoy on August 4, 2008 at 12:04 PM
You know what? I think you’re right. The media thinks the American people are not noticing these things because they “traditionally” don’t pay attention until September and the debates. Nothing could be further from the truth.
In the past few weeks, I’ve heard some interesting things in my neck of the woods. (TX) My husband comes one evening from work telling me about the purging of Obama’s Web site – about which I had not spoken to him. Then, a friend of ours starts ranting about the anti-Americanism of the press – and of Obama! I’ve also seen a few Obama stickers, but not many. In the past two weeks, I’ve seen a few more McCain stickers popping out. My next-door neighbor thinks Obama and the Democrats are fools with respect to the oil crisis – and he’s an accountant. Something IS indeed going on, but the media choose to pretend it doesn’t exist.
The MSM are setting themselves up for an embarrassment of Kaelian proportions. “That can’t be possible! No one I knew voted for McCain!”
newton on August 4, 2008 at 12:06 PM
It’s high drama, no doubt….
This Techdude sez he’s gonna give the gal on the original COLB time to ‘fess up on her own, then really gets everyone cranked by saying it’s someone very well known… someone famous. Now the speculation on who this mystery female might be is off the CHARTS!
Yeh, the intertubes, they be a’rockin’! lol
wccawa on August 4, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Quit the birth certificate issue, already!
I don’t care about that. I care about the fact that Obama is a Marxist!

Sounds like my family and friends from the democrat steel town I grew up in near Pittsburgh. Going back for the annual golf tournament soon, and I can tell you, the Obama dislike nearly unanimous and vociferous, even amongst the people who do not like Bush.
I don’t believe the polls showing Obama with a 7-8 point lead. ACORN better really “get the vote out” in Philly if he expects to win PA.
The totalitarian energy plan he’s talking about right now isn’t going to help either.
forest on August 4, 2008 at 12:07 PM
McCain waiting till after Obama (maybe even after the Democratic Party Convention)? Good. Damn good. It is the right strategy, it is an advantage and it should be used.
DanStark on August 4, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Does Barry still have HillRod’s number, or did he throw that away after he vanquished her?
Although I doubt she would accept if asked at this point.
forest on August 4, 2008 at 12:12 PM
Knowing Obama’s a Socialist. And voting for him gleefully because of it.
RushBaby on August 4, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Being able to do this last is a big help to McCain. For example, if Obama does pick Hillary, then McCain should pick Palin. Put them on the same stage and the Dems lose 3 points instantly. Palin is very sharp in interviews and is never shrill. Hillary is baggage.
If Obama chooses Kaine, then Romney or Cantor match up well. Meanwhile, the Hillary supporters are conflicted.
However it plays out, going second gives McCain control over the match-ups and the timing. That’s worth a lot.
McCain now has the upper hand. Who would have thunk it?
Pythagoras on August 4, 2008 at 1:01 PM
Oh, c’mon, the COLB thing is just SO tasty, how can you not enjoy it?
I mean, even CLENIS is getting into the act today! Plus, it’s the Lightworker’s birthday!
“I think everybody’s got a right to run for president who qualifies under the Constitution…“
wccawa on August 4, 2008 at 1:38 PM
The oh-so-well spoken Ahh … ahhhhh … Obama doesn’t need a media blitz. What he needs is to buy a clue.
