Why the tire-pressure gauge stings; Update: The spin continues

posted at 5:30 pm on August 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

An inability to comprehend context appears to have broken out among the Leftosphere.  Apparently, none of our colleagues on the port side of the blogosphere can figure out why Barack Obama’s suggestion that the energy crisis could be solved through tire inflation and tune-ups was such a gaffe, or why the John McCain campaign’s distribution of pressure gauges skewers ObamaOne blogger goes so far as to point out that the Bush administration actually recommends that motorists inflate tires properly for efficient use of gasoline.

Let’s provide the context these folks either didn’t catch or are deliberately evading (emphases mine):

There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. Making sure your tires are properly inflated — simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling — if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You’d actually save just as much!

Obama didn’t intend this as some sort of offhand comment about conservation and efficiency.  No one doubts that proper tire inflation can help with efficiency, and no one thinks it’s silly to maintain one’s vehicle for a variety of reasons.  However, Obama clearly stated that we could get just as much oil from tire inflation and tune-ups as we can get from drilling — a ludicrous statement well deserving of ridicule.

Jim Geraghty calculated at the time that, assuming a 10% improvement in gas efficiency, we could save about 330,000 barrels of oil a day through proper tire inflation.  Most experts put the actual improvement at 3%.   With our present consumption of 20 million barrels a day, that comes to a savings of 1.65% at the most generous assumptions, and more likely about 0.5%.  Current production of American oil is 8 million barrels a day; expanding drilling to the OCS and to interior shale would eventually provide millions more per day, not just the 100,000 barrels we’ll get out of our tires.

So yes, inflate your tires properly and get regular tune-ups.  But if you think that will solve the supply crisis or make us independent of foreign oil, then you probably won’t get the joke no matter how many times we explain it.

The Ohio Republican Party has some fun with this in their latest web ad:

Update: Jim Geraghty has a note to McCain surrogates: explain the gag.

Update II: David Price at Dean Esmay’s joint has a few more calculations:

How silly is this statement?  Doing the math, it looks like he’s off by about an order of magnitude.  The DOE link says you can save 3.3% and U.S. consumption is 20.8M barrels a day, half of which is gasoline, so even if fully half the population is driving on very poorly inflated tires you’re talking about only about 165,000 barrels a day, a tenth or less of the millions of barrels a day we could add in production.  Hell, the mean estimate for ANWR alone is 780,000 bpd. …

Catch all the shifting goalposts, flawed assumptions, and bad math there?  “All the oil we could get from drilling” becomes “the increase from expanded offshore drilling,” and even then uses a number that seems out of step with published estimates of 250,000 to 1 million bpd.  Then we casually more than double the tire-inflation savings by tossing in “maintenance.”  Then we throw out quantitative analysis altogether by using the impossibly vague “many drivers.” Finally, we ball up our morass of bad data into a misleading conclusion, and for emphasis we state explicitly the one assumption we always regarded as unassailable: Obama must be right.

And note that none of these estimates includes the production from shale, which has a low estimate of 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil — and which doesn’t require deep-sea drilling to extract.

Put even more simply: If Democrats want us to believe their oft-stated aphorism that we can’t drill our way out of a supply crisis, then they’d be much better off not trying to convince us we can inflate our way out of one.

Too funny the Obama Tire Gauge.

Too funny.

I hate myself for not thinking of it over the weekend and getting the TM on it.

What will the impact to the McCain campaign be now that Obama is calling for increased drilling? What will Pelosi and Reid do? Never trust a Dem on drilling. They will load down any compromise bill with so much regulation, taxation, and conditions it may as well be DOA.

Jonathan Martin gave the same bull:

As Obama’s camp notes, Republican Gov’s Charlie Crist and Arnold Schwarzenegger both said in June that keeping tires inflated was one way to save on gas purchases.

Moron? They’re not claiming that inflating tires would save the same amount as we’re talking about drilling.

amerpundit on August 4, 2008 at 5:54 PM

McCain just agreed everybody should check their tire pressure.

Oh no, Hotair! How dare he agree with Obama?

But why check your tire pressure just because a politician tells you you should? It’s a free country, and your right to consume as you please i more important then doing the right thing.

Obama certainly overstated how much gasoline would be saved, but get over ourselves with the giddy shrieking about it. You cannot possibly claim that it’s a bad idea. He NEVER said it was the only solution to America’s pig-like energy appetite.

Dave Rywall on August 4, 2008 at 5:56 PM

Yeah! Finally a McCain ad that not only skewers the Big0, but contrasts McCain in a positive light as well. Excellent job.

Quisp on August 4, 2008 at 5:57 PM

I am so sorry if someone else mentioned this before, I did a crtl-F to check, but didn’t see another comment.

“Like George Bush and Dick Cheney before him,” Obama said of the Arizonan, “he sees more drilling as the answer to all of our energy problems, and like them, he’s found a receptive audience in the very same oil companies that have blocked our progress for so long.

So yeah, We were all mistaken when we thought that after Clinton, was Bush’s first term. Because somewhere in between then, there was President Cheney.

Musta won all 57 states electoral votes with that one. Stealth presidency. Rove you magnificent bastard. DARK SIDE!!!

Dave Rywall on August 4, 2008 at 5:56 PM

That doesn’t make it any less stupid of a comment. He’s a typical elitist who believes in his heart that if nor for government most people would be lost. God knows how we make it through a day without killing ourselves or someone else.

DerKrieger on August 4, 2008 at 5:58 PM

McCain just agreed everybody should check their tire pressure

McCain is his own worst enemy. Compliments both Pelosi and Gore. Now agrees w/Obama? What next?

DerKrieger on August 4, 2008 at 5:59 PM

According to Frank Verrastro, Director and Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), if ALL the cars in the US have low air and need a tune up, correcting those problems would save as much as off-shore drilling…

But, that likely not being the case, he says in the end, the US could save 800 thousands of barrels a day.

So the production offset is more likely to approach 800 thousand barrels per day – a tidy sum and a worthwhile target for savings, but not equal to OCS output

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/07/from-the-fact-1.html

And the line from the right seems to be “inflating your tires is not an energy policy for the US.” Not in and of itself, but it SHOULD BE part of our energy policy.

And despite Ed’s claim, Obama clearly did mean it as part of a general conservation point. The numbers he used seemed to be a little cooked, but that shouldn’t make us overlook that oil can be saved through what he’s proposing.

Obama has an entire speech in which he outlines his energy plan. The right is taking this one point — a point every seems to agree is a good one — and claiming it’s his entire plan… then mocking him for it being his entire plan.

Basically, again, you guys are just making stuff up. It’s not his entire plan, but a good point in his plan. It’s just terribly dishonest of you.

Tom_Shipley on August 4, 2008 at 6:00 PM

While I think this is a great idea, the GOP has to be careful not to overplay its hand on energy. The price of oil is coming down, and gasoline prices are coming with it. Barring any major catastrophes (another war in the Middle East, a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, etc.), the seasonal fuel price cycle will only add to this, and the price of a gallon of gas could be approaching $3.50 per gallon by election day (it’s about $3.90 now, down from a recent high of more than $4.10). While that’s not great, it may be politically counterproductive to imply that increasing domestic production is the only way to drive fuel prices down.

Big S on August 4, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Domestic OIL production, that is.

Big S on August 4, 2008 at 6:01 PM

Dave Rywall on August 4, 2008 at 6:06 PM

As a former mechanic who worked on engines for 25 years, I say the only real savings you would see with proper inflation is tire wear. The gas savings is minimal. Not to say that proper inflation is not a safety issu.

Les in NC on August 4, 2008 at 6:06 PM

In the Obama video the audience did not whoop and cheer at his suggestion. I think it was ackwardly quiet…like he was expecting a big applause and got NOTHING! Are these Obamaniacs finally getting a clue? One could only hope! If just one of them walked away from that speech scratching their head, and they tell two friends, and they tell two friends…HOPE for McCain!

ConMom on August 4, 2008 at 6:06 PM

Obama certainly overstated how much gasoline would be saved, but get over ourselves with the giddy shrieking about it.

Dave Rywall on August 4, 2008 at 5:56 PM

No one debates that it’s a good idea to keep your tires inflated. But he claimed that we could save
“as much” as domestic oil drilling. That’s nowhere in the same country as accurate. That’s what’s being attacked here.

If McCain said the same thing, he’d be slammed as a know-nothing on energy policy. And you know it damn-well.

amerpundit on August 4, 2008 at 6:06 PM

the same ridicule can be used with the SPR call by Pelosi and BHO. If they think 70 Million blls would lower oil prices why do they think that 70 Billion blls of new production would not?

And his solution was? This is the only solution he has given for consumers. He says more oil is not the solution but checking air (and tune-ups) are the only solution? But now maybe we should drill if I can stick you somewhere else to hurt the economy? Obama WANTS high gas prices – he said so. He was only sorry they went up so fast, otherwise we would not have noticed and caused the democrats any problems.

jerseyman on August 4, 2008 at 6:11 PM

No one doubts that proper tire inflation can help with efficiency

Actually I think Edmunds does.

That said if I wanted to change my driving style my car computer tells me that I can go from roughly 24 mpg to around 30+.

Personally speaking driving a 270HP car (I know there are faster out there) is no fun if I try to increase the MPG.

Setting the cruise control at 59 (once I am on the interstate) results in about 37+ mpg (going down hill is part of the reason).

think of it like this the leases the oil companies all ready have would be like buying a beer at a bar. You can get a good buzz that way but its expensive. the areas the oil companies want to open up like ANWR, OCS, and Oil shale would be like buying beer by the keg. It gets you the same buzz, allows you to get drunk the next night and for many nights there after and it costs less.

The Dems want to send the oil companies to the bar, the repubs want to make a beer run to the Budweiser plant.

If there is no enforcment human nature being human nature the same 30% of people that do not inflate their tires will continue to do so. Of course with education you might get that % down to 20% but still unless enforcement is part of the plan it will fail.

Dave Rywall on August 4, 2008 at 5:56 PM

Nice, Dave. Pig-like? Tell that to the (black) guy that cuts my lawn, who drives an older truck and pulls a trailer for his gas-powered equipment. Tell it to all the guys and gals of all skin-colors out there who run service routes to feed their families. Tell it to the independent truck drivers, who are hurting, big time. Tell it consumers, who can cut back on a lot of things, except food — and food prices have risen, not just because of the ethanol-scam (in which Obama’s associates are heavily invested), but because of the price of gas needed to get foodstuffs to local markets.

I’ll guess you live in a city where public transportation is readily available — hop a bus or a train, ride a bicycle like a good metrosexual, and get to work lickety-split, right? Here’s a news flash: many Americans live in areas where there is no public transportation that can take them to their jobs, and they have no choice other than to drive — or just give up, and go on unemployment when they can’t afford gas, and wait for the great Obamessiah’s social welfare to rescue them from despair.

But we’re all pigs, right Dave? I’m not saying Obama called Americans pigs, by the way, but you’re obviously an Obama supporter, and you did.

However, Obama clearly stated that we could get just as much oil from tire inflation and tune-ups as we can get from drilling — a ludicrous statement well deserving of ridicule.

Honestly Ed, I think you and almost everyone else is letting Barry off too easy on this one. Calling it a “ludicrous statement” doesn’t cut it. It’s a flat out lie, and (not that this is news) Obama is an f-ing liar, and should be called one when he lies. Just like he lied when he tried to say his “dollar bill” comments weren’t speaking about race, etc. (BTW, for any lib who’s still drinking the Kool Aid on that one, I always have to point out what the MSM continues to ignore… the day he made the comment 3 times proved it, but that wasn’t the nail in the coffin… that came back in June, when we see he gave essentially the same “they’re going to try to scare you about me…” speech. He said the same “funny name”, “inexperienced” stuff, but that time he ended “did I mention – he’s black”. Sorry for the tangent, I just haven’t gotten to personally waste any libs on that one, and I’m tired of seeing Barry surrogates getting away with spinning this crap in the MSM)

As a former mechanic who worked on engines for 25 years, I say the only real savings you would see with proper inflation is tire wear. The gas savings is minimal. Not to say that proper inflation is not a safety issue.

Hear, hear! Some common sense, at last!

Has Obama gotten his hands dirty fixing an engine or changing a tire? Most likely, someone else does that for him nowadays.

But for the rest of us, the story is very different.

newton on August 4, 2008 at 8:00 PM

However, Obama clearly stated that we could get just as much oil from tire inflation and tune-ups as we can get from drilling — a ludicrous statement well deserving of ridicule.

Honestly Ed, I think you and almost everyone else is letting Barry off too easy on this one. Calling it a “ludicrous statement” doesn’t cut it. It’s a flat out lie, and (not that this is news) Obama is an f-ing liar, and should be called one when he lies.

And here I thought it would be impossible for anyone to top Al Franken.

[..]but get over ourselves with the giddy shrieking about it. You cannot possibly claim that it’s a bad idea.[..]

I will NOT. Hehehe! BO is an idiot. And I deflated my tires this morning. What an Ass!

Maybe Barry-O (I keep thinking of the Cars’ “Candy-O”) can mandate that all compressed air be free?

No, Candy-O had curves. Barry-O has more in common with Em-O Phillips.

expanding drilling to the OCS and to interior shale would eventually provide millions more per day

Where is the reference for this? How long does it take to get to this “millions of barrels more” per day figure?

I just found this, and like the idea of the GOP as the Grand Oil Party. Thank you, CannotMoveOn.Con

Want Oil? Vote for it!

DannoJyd on August 4, 2008 at 8:45 PM

If ANWR is opened for drilling, the biggest effects will be from 2022 to 2026. At that time, if we didn’t open up ANWR we would be importing 51% of our oil. If we open up ANWR, we will be importing only 48% of our oil. That should dry up the cash flow going to those evil brown people.
Also, opening up ANWR will decrease the price per barrel of oil by 75 cents per barrel. This translates to a 2 cent per gallon savings at the pump! Awesome!

Reference.

but… but… the tire gauge is a phallic symbol too!?!

I dunno…let’s not attempt to do anything like develop our own resources, let’s just say ‘why bother’ and 10 years from now we can have some other smarmy douche bag puke out the same tired old line…

What is the percentage of incorrectly inflated tires Obama is using for his numbers? 10%, 20%, 100%?

.

close, but it’s 47,000%

Interesting. Actually producing oil from ANWR would only lower the price of gasoline by two cents in 14 years, according to some.

Yet the mere gesture, with no actual practical force of law, of President Bush rescinding the Executive Order on the coastal drilling ban lowered the price of gasoline at the pump by fifteen cents in three days. (Just as I predicted it would the week before, right here at HotAir)

Funny how so many ‘experts’ are so ignorant of political, practical and economic realities.

I much prefer “Running on empty” as it is also metaphor for Barry the empty suit.

Pressure gauges == racist.

The pressure gauge, in itself, is a racist implement, used by racists against The Lord God Heavenly King Barry Obama-Kenobi.

It’s a SHAME!
