For years I kept watch on the dead things that washed up at a small stretch of tidal river bank in Southampton [shown in the adjacent image], and on several occasions I got to watch taphonomy in action as dead dogs, cats and foxes washed up and decomposed over the following weeks.

There is another photo floating around from a different angle. That photograph seems to show pretty clearly that what we have here is a partially decomposed (or nibbled on by crabs/fish/etc) pit bull. The ears and the neck and hind legs are clearly those of a pit bull. My guess is it was either discarded because it wasn’t winning any matches, or jumped off someone’s boat.

Montauk? Hmmm…guess no one in that part of the world has been close to anything but pedigreed pets. Read a short article recently citing more and more urban school kids can’t tell the difference between a cow and a sheep…or just about any kind of animal other than a cat or dog. It figures. Jerry Rivers had this story on last night. It was like opening Al Capone’s vault. Jerry kept trying to make a story out of it but Jeff Corwin (the nature guy from Discovery Channel)kept explaining it was a decaying dog or racoon. I will go along with Manbearpig.
