One thing I still don’t get… why do we need a compromise here? I suspect we can get enough Republicans and Blue-Dog Democrats to prevent a veto-proof majority in one of the Legislative Branches.

The ban EXPIRES at the end of September, unless a new law is passed and signed before then.
Running out the clock = win.
A veto of the bill and no legislation = win.
No vote whatsoever = win.
A Filibuster = win.

Now, a fair question would be “why didn’t we do this when we had Congress in Republican control”… but maybe the idjits we elected are paying attention this time around.

A win here is damned easy, and shouldn’t take a major compromise. Handing over enough to get majority legislation would be foolish; and any discussion should go the other way.

What could Democrats offer us in return for reinstating any part of the ban that is set to expire unless a law is passed?

Lets not make it too easy for the weak-kneed amongst Congress to pretend that they needed the compromise and all the crap that they’ll throw in to get something passed.

Nothing passed = no ban after Sept. 30th.

gekkobear on August 5, 2008 at 12:18 AM

One more point to your fine analysis Gekkobear.

Worst case senario, and the dems come back and a crappy compromise bill makes it through the house AND senate, Bush would veto it. With the current and heated sense that the electorate has about drilling, I highly suspect there would not be enough democrats that would vote to override a Bush veto.

And so, the ban expires and we drill.

Win.

Too much Botox has fried her brain.

Seriously...I think this woman is senile. Just because she has had work done on her face and dyes her hair to make her LOOK younger, she is really a shell of her former self. I was around her quite a bit when she first came to Congress (my husband worked for another Democratic congressman from nothern California) and she was one of the smartest people there. I actually used to admire her for the way she mastered the Old Boys' Club on Capitol Hill. Now you see her and listen to her and wonder if she can even find the bathroom in the Capitol. If she were a man I have no doubt the questions about senility would be at least whispered.

Her being third in line for the Presidency would be kind of refreshing since she's actually second in line. First in line is already the President.

Does anybody think it is worthwhile to show that the Dems even obstruct other forms of energy? They are against nuclear and although the wind thing is cute, it can't be where they would see it. Do any of them live with the Amish and if not why not?

Keep using Pelosi's name with "failed energy policy". Eventually Google will have more hits associating the dimwit Speaker with ineffectiveness.

Is it possible that most MSM interviewers are so non-plussed by the incoherent, out-in-left field blatherings of Pelosi and her fellow-travelers that they are unable to refute or challenge this idiocy?

Pelosi has been controlling the narrative by blaming the "two oil men in the administration," by blaming Big Oil and "obscene profits", by blaming evil speculators, etc. Her version of "reality" has become the accepted version of events. It's time to hit hard the unexamined but accepted boilerplate of the media regarding oil's role (as well as that of other plentiful energy sources) in our economy.

Turn her "for the children" emotional ploy against her by exposing how her obstructionism is creating a world of impoverishment for those children.

Pelosi is a vicious, down-and-dirty politician, brought up through the ranks by learning Democrat machine politics in Baltimore. She may be politically savvy, but she is exceptional stupid. Expose the stupidity.

When she yammers about "bipartisan agreements," point out to her that many Democrats are on board with expanding our energy independence through more drilling and refining. Turn her bipartisan rhetoric against her.

Would it be heretical of me to say that a limited kick-start release from the national reserves could be considered as a part of a larger slate of initiatives to reduce both long and short-term oil price pressures, even though it would allow the Democrats to save a bit of face and might not be as good for increasing Republican stock in November?
