Video: Let’s go over it again — why can’t we have a vote on drilling?
posted at 9:50 pm on August 4, 2008 by Allahpundit
Answer: Because drilling won’t help solve our problems immediately. Or maybe it’s because the GOP hasn’t used the right parliamentary procedure to bring the issue to the floor. Or is it because drilling proposals have to be part of a comprehensive energy package? Ah well. Via Freedom’s Watch, enjoy as Pelosi comes perilously close to turning Stephanopoulos into an unwitting partner in a “Who’s on First?” routine, leaving the audience “feeling bewildered as a seabird fouled by an oil spill.” Exit quotation: “But if you feel you have the better arguments, why not give a straight up-or-down vote for drilling?”

I was wondering that as well. Especially after the graphic that showed her broken promise.
Maybe the republicans have to use their imaginations and figure out how to pull some parliamentary trick to get a fair shake from this witch. If she turns off the lights, then bring coleman gas lantern. If she turns off the microphones, then they need to bring their megaphones. Republicans, you need to use your imagination to fight against this woman, and take your case to the media. Smuggle out little notes inside little moon cakes like the resistance from the oppressive chinese government. Or use internet cameras with wireless adapters to smuggle out video dispatches to be uploaded to youtube at an undisclosed location across the street. Smuggle out some top secret documents in your socks and then place them in a construction zone outside the capitol building. Do whatever it takes.
Use your imaginations, republicans.

This is getting to be an extreme example of our federal government becoming too powerful and usurping the rights of States.
Citizens of States outside California should not be subjected to the whim of a nut job like Pelosi.
If she and her constituents don’t want drilling, fine. But let her represent California; not Alaska, not Florida, not oil shale States; not natural gas States; etc.
BowHuntingTexas on August 4, 2008 at 10:07 PM
OK, Speaker Blinky, let’s say you get the 700 million reserve barrels (or whatever) …………. then what? If you sold it on the open market and China bought it all, cool. What would you do with the revenue? How would you replace it for a National Emergency? If you only sold it to American markets, how long would it last, a week?
Then what?
If putting more oil into the market is your answer to the high cost of gas, then why is drilling for more of our own oil not the answer………………………….?
This lady is a dolt and needs to be removed from office……

dentalque on August 4, 2008 at 9:58 PM
The people of San Francisco vote for this socialist woman. People really should investigate San Fran politics, starting with the mayor (Gavin Newson) and working your way right through the police department. The entire bay area is a fascinating study into the working mechanics of Liberalism. Does Liberalism work? Is Liberalism a viable option for the rest of America? How does San Francisco contribute to the state, or does SF simply suck life from the state? Every American should educate themselves with regards to Liberalism; have an open mind and simply seek the facts.
San Fransisco is a city that the media (Liberals in general) never wants to talk about for good reason.

More light shed on Dems’ obstructionism when she refuses yet again, under tremendous pressure from Republicans and a majority of the American public, to allow the bill to come up for fair debate and a straight up-or-down vote. One of the most powerful arguments that Ward Connerly puts forth against affirmative action is that it puts individuals into positions that they’re ill equipped to manage. If you don’t have the education and IQ to earn a 33 on the ACT test, then you’re not going to do very well at Stanford, where all the other students earned 34s.
Nancy Pelosi “made history breaking through the glass ceiling and became the first woman speaker” blah, blah – anyone notice that she’s utterly and completely outside of her depth in this position? She is setting women back a century with her flaming botox incompetence.
Obambi is attempting to do the same for blacks, being gifted a position that he is so hilariously ill equipped for, that he has already turned the campaign into farce. He performs like an idiot savant, making grand speeches about nothing, as we watch Pelosi furiously spinning herself into a sputtering, slobbering, wide-eyed ninny.

Absolutely incredible.
She basically said that anyone represented by a Republican is not entitled to have a full-fledged representative in the House.

Me, too. But I have hope that the Republicans, who are clearly emboldened now that they have a bipartisan majority of 70% or so of voters behind them on this, will not compromise and will just keep doggedly proposing their bill over and over and over and over and over — while refusing to cooperate with Dem appropriations — until she has to allow the vote if she wants anything at all to get funded this year.
aero on August 4, 2008 at 10:20 PM
Pelosi needs to be in a small, well-padded room under heavy sedation.
It’s genuinely frightening to think that this babbling, incoherent fool is third in line for the presidency.
And even more frightening to think there are people who actually support her.
MrScribbler on August 4, 2008 at 10:21 PM
Strategic Oil reserve, 700 million barrels. We consume 20 million barrels a day. How much is she proposing we let out? Certainly not all of it, but if we lost our ability to import oil and drill our own, it would last for 35 days. With all of the oil we do drill(not sure, about five) and import(10 million barrels a day is what I found), then what percentage of the strategic oil reserve – that is supposed to be there for the uS military, not every motorist in the country would pelosi want to drain. And for how long. And when would she stop.
Of course this is all a waste of time to speculate, because she has no intention to actually do this. This is all for the cameras and the democrat constituents who want to hear how it’s all the republicans fault, and to get Obama elected in three months. Pelosi is obvious putting party before country.

Terrye on August 4, 2008 at 10:22 PM
I have never been so infuriated by a politician as I have been just now by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. HOW DARE SHE hold congress prisoner to HER WHIM. Simply put, she is violating procedure and the rule of law by stonewalling a LEGITIMATE debate and vote on a policy that THE AMERICAN PEOPLE – the people she is supposed to answer to – overwhelmingly support. She isn’t supposed to rule over the House like Queen Nancy. This isn’t about saving the planet. This is about doing what’s right by the American people. I am incensed about this.
DakRoland on August 4, 2008 at 10:23 PM
The GOP needs to be VERY careful about any carrot of compromise the Dems dangle. I’m sure it will come loaded with regulations, restrictions, and new taxes. I think the GOP needs to push for ANWR just so they can give it up later in a deal that lets the Dems save face. It will make it easier for the Dem rank and file to stand up to Nazi Pelosi. If we get OCS and shale we can come back to ANWR in a few decades if needed.

The reason Stephanopolus and the rest of the media loved Bill Clinton so deeply wasn’t just because he’s a liberal – lots of politicians are liberal.
The reason they loved Clinton so much was because he was so good at helping them help him.
Pelosi is a gibbering idiot. Stephanopolus still desperately wants to help her, but he can’t hide his disgust over how incompetant she is at working with the propaganda machine.

I honestly think (hope) that she’s going to be dealing with an insurrection in her own ranks when they get back in session. They’re all up for re-election, and she’s putting members of her own caucus at risk. I think her Dem flock is highly likely to turn on her in large numbers to save their political skins.
I’m really torn between hoping that we get drilling while the gettin’s good or hoping that the Dems stupidly keep stone-walling and hand us a bunch of seats in November. If we get drilling passed, we probably won’t be able to hold onto the political momentum once the urgency of the issue dies down with voters. But if it doesn’t pass, we probably won’t be able to eek out a majority from it and still won’t be able to get it on the floor for another two years.

Fine, release oil from the strategic reserves and lower the price. Soon enough the reserve will have to be refilled, and guess what? the oil being purchased will compete directly with the oil meant for consumption, driving the price up! Releasing from the reserve only will help if you don’t intend to refill it.

[Terrye on August 4, 2008 at 10:29 PM]
True.
Here’s why I resist pushing that point, Terrye. For one, a lot of them already know it. Second, it’s water under the bridge and serves little purpose other than the “I told you so” slap in the face to the same people we now need to gather as a larger, unified and majority faction to throw out the Dems and get the country on the right track.
Lastly, it was understandable that they did what they did at the time. The Republican majority deserved a whole heck of a lot our turning our backs. It was one of the only ways to register displeasure with their governance. And I’ll tell ya, after reading Paul Johnson’s “History of the American People”, it’s pretty apparent that flipping from one to the other is a pretty natural occurrence all up and down the governmental ladder.
The big point to be made at this point is who is now responsible for the current debacle at the National level, and more to the point of this particular issue of not getting a vote on an energy policy. That’s why I noted who put Pelosi in charge of deciding what legislation will be voted on. I’m not going to let my Dem Rep hide in the shade of Pelosi’s stupendous, sun eclipsing ignorance because my Dem Rep is one of the ones who hoisted her on to the pedestal.
I’ll tell ya though, none of it will make much difference over even the medium haul until we take national lawmakers power to run almost every aspect of our lives away. I really like the noise some in Oklahoma are making.
