Video: Let’s go over it again — why can’t we have a vote on drilling?

posted at 9:50 pm on August 4, 2008 by Allahpundit
Send to a Friend | printer-friendly

Answer: Because drilling won’t help solve our problems immediately. Or maybe it’s because the GOP hasn’t used the right parliamentary procedure to bring the issue to the floor. Or is it because drilling proposals have to be part of a comprehensive energy package? Ah well. Via Freedom’s Watch, enjoy as Pelosi comes perilously close to turning Stephanopoulos into an unwitting partner in a “Who’s on First?” routine, leaving the audience “feeling bewildered as a seabird fouled by an oil spill.” Exit quotation: “But if you feel you have the better arguments, why not give a straight up-or-down vote for drilling?”

I guess this proves the mental prowess of the voters in San Fran! Nice.
Seriously, how did this empty head (not suit, that applies only to the One)end up and the Speaker of the House of the United States of America? Sad.

jdsmith0021 on August 4, 2008 at 11:00 PM

The answer is simple people.

Pelosi can’t deal with admitting she’s wrong.

Some guy in Germany had that same problem some sixty odd years ago.

Look where that got him.

“Democrats have a commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices by cracking down on price gouging, rolling back the billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, tax breaks and royalty relief given to big oil and gas companies, and increasing production of alternative fuels.”
Nancy Pelosi Monday, April 24, 2006

Democrats have a commnonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices the Democratic Caucus squeeze massive donations from our radical base by cracking down on (fictional) price gouging, rolling back the (mythical) billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, tax breaks and royalty relief given to big oil and gas companies, and *increasing production of alternative fuels*.” *re: corn ethanol subsidies*

The people of San Francisco vote for this socialist woman. People really should investigate San Fran politics, starting with the mayor (Gavin Newson) and working your way right through the police department. The entire bay area is a fascinating study into the working mechanics of Liberalism. Does Liberalism work? Is Liberalism a viable option for the rest of America? How does San Francisco contribute to the state, or does SF simply suck life from the state? Every American should educate themselves with regards to Liberalism; have an open mind and simply seek the facts.

San Fransisco is a city that the media (Liberals in general) never wants to talk about for good >

I live in SF and it hurts just to talk to these people
The tide is turning on Gavin Newsome. He is even to liberal for the loons here. His sanctuary city policy is going to be the end of him.

yo on August 4, 2008 at 11:39 PM

Damn, c’mon Pelosi, it’s simple.

The environmental watchdog groups in Venezuela, China, Mexico, Russia and the Middle East are just so much better than the U.S., and their governments are so much more concerned with the environment that it’s a net gain for the environment to drill there, with their environmental controls for our oil.

If this weren’t the case, it would be better from a global warming, ecology, and environmental standpoint (as well as cost) to drill here (less fuel for transportation, shorter transportation so less chance of spills, and U.S. oversight instead of Venezuela). But obviously our environmental controls pale compared the the environmental wonder that is (for example) Mexico…

Can anyone come up with a reason why the logic (not the premises) in that argument fails? I know the premises are flat out false, but given that information; what we’re doing is bad environmental policy as well, isn’t it?

yo on August 4, 2008 at 11:39 PM

I don’t think anyone is going to come into this thread and say don’t even try.

Fact is, it will take decades to come up with a viable alternative to oil. Maybe centuries. Look at your computer… do you have any idea how much of it is derived from oil?

Oil will always be a commodity and to think otherwise is foolish. So yes, let’s work on alternatives, but let’s not lose sight of the FACT that we will always need OIL and it is just plain stupid not to drill here. Or use the shale deposits.

Why send dollars to people that despise us, when we have such a wealth of deposits here in the good ol’ USA?

Ugly on August 4, 2008 at 11:52 PM

We really shouldn’t concentrate solely on Pelosi. After all, her constituents only voted to send her to the House. It was the Democrats in the House who chose her to lead them and control the House as Majority Leader. Her idiocy is their idiocy. Every last one of them.

Call your Dem Rep and ask why they put a Beclownette in charge.

The GOP needs to be VERY careful about any carrot of compromise the Dems dangle. I’m sure it will come loaded with regulations, restrictions, and new taxes…
DerKriege

One thing I still don’t get… why do we need a compromise here? I suspect we can get enough Republicans and Blue-Dog Democrats to prevent a veto-proof majority in one of the Legislative Branches.

The ban EXPIRES at the end of September, unless a new law is passed and signed before then.
Running out the clock = win.
A veto of the bill and no legislation = win.
No vote whatsoever = win.
A Filibuster = win.

Now, a fair question would be “why didn’t we do this when we had Congress in Republican control”… but maybe the idjits we elected are paying attention this time around.

A win here is damned easy, and shouldn’t take a major compromise. Handing over enough to get majority legislation would be foolish; and any discussion should go the other way.

What could Democrats offer us in return for reinstating any part of the ban that is set to expire unless a law is passed?

Lets not make it too easy for the weak-kneed amongst Congress to pretend that they needed the compromise and all the crap that they’ll throw in to get something passed.

Nothing passed = no ban after Sept. 30th.

[N4646W on August 4, 2008 at 11:53 PM]

Yeah. It’s the game they all play. It’s not much different than what our state governments (NY, anyway) do, too. They’ve got a great racket, calling on the Fed to give, give, give on past socialist programs most of them started, while they play irresponsible ractchet-it-up socialism on all sorts of new programs. They get them started, let it get out of control, then first beg the Feds for some money and forever after cry, cry, cry that the Feds aren’t doing enough.

Dusty on August 5, 2008 at 12:42 AM

What it comes down to is that Democrats don’t believe in democracy. What they do believe in is their superiority over the voter and their elected representatives, that their backroom deals should trump any democratic process.

I saw this same thing in Texas in the waning days of the Democrats when Governor Ann Richards refused to put the concealed carry law to a vote in the legislature, knowing the party line would lose.

Simply put, the Democrats are fascists who seek to place themselves above the law, above democracy, above the voters. To them, citizens should be their subjects. That’s why Democrats do not deserve the public trust.

[gekkobear on August 5, 2008 at 12:18 AM]

Here’s the slight flaw that might exist in that, gekkobear. Maybe it would be better to call it a quirk. Anyway, I haven’t found anything to confirm or refute this angle yet.

The moratorium is on the use of funding appropriated for DOI. So my guess would be that DOI can’t use any money from 2007 or earlier on OCS leases moratorium’d ever, unless the moratorium is positively revoked.

Now wrt the DOI’s 2008 Appropriations haven’t been passed yet (assumption but reasonable since we are still talking about it and if the 2008 DOI Appropriations had been passed the moratorium would be over already).

So, are the Dems going to wait to the last minute to pass it hoping things might change or could they try something a little different — attempt to pass a Continuing Resolution on just DOI Appropriations, in other words, pass something saying DOI to continue on the funding in the same way as 2007 and at the same money level? If they did this would that be a backdoor way to extend the moratorium until January when they hope to have a filibuster proof majority?

I don’t know that any of that would work, or that the Republicans would let them succeed, but I wouldn’t put it past the Dems to try.

MirCat on August 5, 2008 at 6:43 AM

Pelosi is clearly so out of touch with reality, that it should give one pause to consider that perhaps she shouldn’t be sitting in the position of power she is in right now. Her own constituency in San Francisco has to be feeling the pinch at the pump as much as the rest of the country, but she doesn’t care. As far as she is concerned, her sole mission is to “save the planet”. Everything else in her eyes comes second, if even at all.

Just on that basis alone, maybe it is time for her to be recalled from office, before she really starts doing some serious damage.

Rod on August 5, 2008 at 7:26 AM

Republicans need to repeat the point that releasing the strategic reserves to the markdet jeopardizes our national and economic security and briefly but forcefully say how and why it does so.

The same meesage should point out that Nancy Pelosi’s plan to release those reserves is a short-term bandage promoted for partisan reasons to take the pressure off her party for being obstructionist.

Turn Pelosi’s rhetoric against her, exposing her foolish agenda for what it is.

Pelosi needs to be roundly refuted with facts on her claim re the ten years to provide existing sources of energy to the nation.

onlineanalyst on August 5, 2008 at 7:28 AM

Pelosi’s not an idiot. She knows very well that she has to stammer around and give non-answers because the American people wont appreciate the real reason she opposes increased oil production.

But she finally admitted to it right at the end of her final response:

STEPHANOPOULOS: But that’s what I don’t understand. If you could get votes on everything else that you care about which you say there is strong bipartisan support, why not allow a vote on the drilling as well?

PELOSI: Because the President will not allow any of these other things to go forth. [Huh?] Why are we not saying to the President, “why don’t you release oil from the SPR in ten days to have the price at the pump go down?” [More oil means lower prices? Get outta here!] “Why are you opposed to any undue speculation in the oil markets?” [Because it's a free country maybe?] “Why do you not insist that people who have leases on our land with permits ready to go use those?” [Because there isn't enough oil there to make drilling profitable. Does Nancy know that? Oh, yes:] The oil companies don’t want competition and what we would do by saying, “go ahead, give them the subsidies,” allow them to drill in areas that are protected now instead of where they’re allowed to drill, is to diminish all of the opportunity that we have for an electricity standard for our country, where we set out standards that makes the competition for renewable energy resources better. Which says to the private sector, invest here because there is a standard that they have to honor. If you just say it’s drill, drill, drill, drill and we’re going to subsidize it, what is the motivation for the private sector to come in and say we’re going to support these renewable energies, wind, solar, biofuels, plug-in cars, natural gas and other alternatives?

She doesn’t want to solve the issue at all. She wants a diminished oil supply in order to keep prices high so that “the private sector” will be forced to adopt less efficient and less reliable energy sources. (Notice she didn’t mention nuclear in that litany of options.)

Tuning Spork on August 5, 2008 at 8:00 AM

Get this idiot on TV more often. If anyone can lose the Democrat Congress this year, Nan can.

Democrats should be wearing bags over their heads for electing this mentally incompetent, corrupt idiot as House Speaker.

What a worthless woman.

NoDonkey on August 5, 2008 at 8:24 AM

Would it be heretical of me to say that a limited kick-start release from the national reserves could be considered as a part of a larger slate of initiatives to reduce both long and short-term oil price pressures, even though it would allow the Democrats to save a bit of face and might not be as good for increasing Republican stock in November?

Immolate on August 5, 2008 at 8:47 AM

Keep using Pelosi’s name with “failed energy policy”. Eventually Google will have more hits associating the dimwit Speaker with ineffectiveness.

Is it possible that most MSM interviewers are so non-plussed by the incoherent, out-in-left field blatherings of Pelosi and her fellow-travelers that they are unable to refute or challenge this idiocy?

Pelosi has been controlling the narrative by blaming the “two oil men in the administration,” by blaming Big Oil and “obscene profits”, by blaming evil speculators, etc. Her version of “reality” has become the accepted version of events. It’s time to hit hard the unexamined but accepted boilerplate of the media regarding oil’s role (as well as that of other plentiful energy sources) in our economy.

Turn her “for the children” emotional ploy against her by exposing how her obstructionism is creating a world of impoverishment for those children.

Pelosi is a vicious, down-and-dirty politician, brought up through the ranks by learning Democrat machine politics in Baltimore. She may be politically savvy, but she is exceptional stupid. Expose the stupidity.

When she yammers about “bipartisan agreements,” point out to her that many Democrats are on board with expanding our energy independence through more drilling and refining. Turn her bipartisan rhetoric against her.

onlineanalyst on August 5, 2008 at 8:58 AM

Does anybody think it is worthwhile to show that the Dems even obstruct other forms of energy? They are against nuclear and although the wind thing is cute, it can’t be where they would see it. Do any of them live with the Amish and if not why not?

One more point to your fine analysis Gekkobear.

Worst case senario, and the dems come back and a crappy compromise bill makes it through the house AND senate, Bush would veto it. With the current and heated sense that the electorate has about drilling, I highly suspect there would not be enough democrats that would vote to override a Bush veto.

And so, the ban expires and we drill.

Win.
