Open letter to Pelosi: Republicans just want a chance to vote; Boehner’s Live Blog

The House Republican leadership has just delivered an open letter to Nancy Pelosi this morning, requesting that she call Congress back into session to … well, to do their jobs. Calling a recess “unconscionable” while high fuel prices rock the economy and harm Americans, especially the working class, the GOP says all they want is an honest debate and an open vote:

An Open Letter to Speaker Pelosi

On Friday August 1, 2008, at 11:23 a.m., your Democrat majority in the House of Representatives adjourned the House for five full weeks.

House Republicans believe that Congress should not go on vacation until we take action to lower gas and energy prices for struggling American families.

For the last two months we and our House Republican colleagues have used every tool at our disposal to try and get you and your Democrat majority to vote on legislation to lower gas and energy prices by expanding environmentally sound domestic production of oil and natural gas, improving energy efficiency, and encouraging the development of alternative energy technologies.

Many of the proposals we have asked you and your Democrat majority to allow us to vote on are bipartisan proposals that we believe would enjoy the support of a majority of the Members of the Congress. Yet because you and your Democrat Leadership personally oppose these proposals, you are not allowing them to come up for a vote.  This past Sunday, you even told George Stephanopoulos that you will never allow this vote to occur ….

In protest of you and your Democrat majority not allowing an up or down vote on producing more American energy, we and our House Republican colleagues were prepared to take to the floor on Friday, August 1, 2008, and speak to the nation. Rather than allowing that to happen you and your Democrat majority adjourned the House, turned off the television cameras, shut off the microphones and turned out the lights. Nearly 50 House Republicans remained on the floor of the House in defiance speaking to those citizens gathered in the galleries and to the media.

Today we have again returned to the Capitol to continue speaking to the thousands of Americans from all across our country who are visiting the Capitol. We would have preferred if instead we were joined by our colleagues to have a true debate on this issue that ended in an up or down vote.

We think it is unconscionable that Congress has gone on vacation before we have addressed the high gas prices that are crippling our economy and hurting millions of families.  We are asking that you reconvene the House from your five-week vacation and schedule a vote on legislation to increase American energy production. Let us be clear, we are not asking for a guaranteed outcome, just the chance to vote.

Signed by: John Boehner, Republican Leader; Roy Blunt, Republican Whip; Adam Putnam, Republican Conference Chairman; Eric Cantor, Chief Deputy Whip; and Members of the House Republican Conference

It looks like Republicans have committed themselves to the long game on energy policy.

———

John Boehner’s office has started a live blog to keep up with the events today. Keep checking back during the day.  Here are a couple of nuggets from today’s debate:

“Without your help we won’t be able to do anything…like the founders of this country we’re going directly to the American people.” - Rep. Tom Price (R-GA)

The oil might not flow for a year or two, but the jobs will start immediately…Right now, this House is an obstacle, not a platform.” - Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK)

The jobs would begin immediately, and long-term planning based on surplus rather than shortage could also begin.

But she already said, “We can’t drill our way out of this problem.” What part of “can’t” don’t these Republicans understand?

As record oil prices continue to burden American families and businesses, reports indicate that the President’s visit to Saudi Arabia today to push for increased production has failed. Despite considerable influence, the Bush Administration has been ineffective in pressuring Saudi Arabia and, yet again, has failed to effectively use diplomacy to exact short-term relief for American consumers.

Nancy Pelosi May 16, 2008

We can’t drill our way out of this, but the Saudis can drill us out of it?

She isn’t going to budge on it. Good! It’s an open, running sore for the next 5 weeks. I hope this drags on till elections. 3 more months isn’t going to make that much difference and the coat tail potential for the GOP is enormous. Rush just had a sound bite of Pelosi from “This Week” yesterday when she used the term “The Wardance of the Handmaidens of the Oil Companies” to describe members of the House who wanted a vote on offshore drilling. My 15-year old daughter was in the truck with me and asked “who is that?”

“That’s Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House”.

“Is she high?”

If a 15-year old kid can figure this out, why can’t Nan?

Blue-eyed Infidel on August 4, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Just a thought, do we really want the dems to do something right now? If they would let us drill they would take the credit for the rapid fall in gas prices. If the ban renewal failed that expires in September, the drilling proponents would get the credit. Like I said, just a thought.

Les in NC on August 4, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Dang, that was a lot of uses of the term “Democrat Majority”. I know that drives ‘em nuts, preferring to be called “Democratic”. I find that usage awkward however, as it attempts to imbue them with a property that they may or may not possess. I am forming the “Studly” party. You will all now refer to me as Studly Immolate please.

I figure if they aren’t happy with “Democrat”, we can compromise and start calling the “Democraticans”.

Immolate on August 4, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Here’s a coincidence. Friday’s internet blog site tech glitch occurred just as Nancy’s gavel jump started her vacation. She has at her disposal more than one means to clog Congressional proceedings and the blogosphere as well.

Did her feelings get hurt by the magic mirror’s response to her incessant vanity? Is she checking herself into a clinic to go under the knife as we await her re-emergence, as though that cures all ills? She’s the House White Rabbit late for an important date with underground profiteers.

I am wondering why every single level-headed American is not bombing Washington with phone calls, emails, and letters demanding that Pelosi be removed from the Speaker’s Office and be replaced with someone a little more willing to work for the people to get this oil situation resolved. Just adjourning without even bothering to address the issue may have made her the most hated woman in America right now.

When they closed the session last Friday, I figured they would call in reinforcements. I’ll bet they’ve worked out some kind of schedule by now. It will be interesting to see if any of the Dems who support the bipartisan effort end up joining in. That will be a true revolt!

Sydney Carton on August 4, 2008 at 1:09 PM

Isn’t the use of Democrat in this case a proper noun?

Texas Gal on August 4, 2008 at 1:22 PM

I really, really hope this bipartisan band of 10 don’t get their way before elections.

Personally, I’d rather we crank up domestic production now. I really don’t know how much longer the economy and the country as a whole can sustain $4.00 gas prices. This is too important an issue to be playing partisan politics with. Something that San Fran Nan doesn’t understand.

crazy_legs on August 4, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Obama’s rhetoric has racheted up this morning. The democratic leadership is attempting to frame this whole crisis as “the consumer vs. BIG BAD OIL CORPORATIONS”. Obama’s speech a few minutes ago was nothing but a socialist/communist ploy to tax oil while promising to put a thousand dollars in everyone’s pocket. He also promised billions in government sponsored “investments” with no indication of where the money is supposed to come from.

The lemming left has already bought into the scam. Will a responsible electorate see this as it is?

Entelechy on August 4, 2008 at 1:23 PM

It’s illogical, I know, but I wouldn’t have any problem calling them the “Autocratic Majority”. I guess that lets the air out of my argument.

Immolate on August 4, 2008 at 1:25 PM

I think I caught Ordinary1’s stomach bug from Friday’s thread, so my enthusiasm is not so rampent today. I’m not surprised there isn’t more coverage on the MSM, but I’m supporting them 100% (from my couch).

On the Democrat/ic thing, good on them. You don’t say “Hey, Democratic person!,” you say “Hey, Democrat!” The word, like Republican, serves as both a noun and an adjective. Democratic is an adjective describing a political process, not a political party.

Let’s take Pelosi at her word and agree that we can’t drill our way out of this. Right, my first thought too - yet, the media “…due to storm intensity reduction…”

Entelechy on August 4, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Indeed. The prices would also fall immediately

Right now, its the “oil investors” who have driven the price of oil on the market as high as it is based on an shortage in supply. As soon as a solution to the supply side of the equation is on the horizon, the value they place on a barrel of oil will drop, as will the price at the pump.

The question is, when the price drops will the politicians in charge have what it takes to follow through? Or will we see the same result as the “oil crisis” of the 70’s where the price drop convinces them all is OK, so we don’t need to actually follow through on anything.

As I was telling my 12 year old son a few days ago, we had the proverbial “wake up call” in the 70’s and ended up doing nothing substantive. Will he be telling his kids about the “wake up” call we had in the 00’s and how we ended up doing nothing substantive?

I hope President Bush calls Congress back into special session about 2 weeks before the DNC convention.

BadgerHawk on August 4,

He can’t. Harry Reid pulled a dirty trick and did not officially adjourn the Senate. It’s technically still in session, for 5 minutes per day throughout the break. Because the Senate is technically in session, the president can’t call them “back” since they’re not “gone.” Rep. Culberson explained via Twitter last night:

We would ask the Pres to call Congress into special session but the Senate used a sneaky trick to prevent this - they are still in session about 14 hours ago from web

Senate is in “pro forma session” for 5 minutes every day all summer to stop the Pres from calling a special session to drill here drill now about 13 hours ago from web

This also prevents the president from making recess appointments. Bastages.

Which demonstrates nicely that the way to impact speculation is to send the message to speculators that America is going to move towards energy independence. Legislating speculation is so short sighted.

Just as Pelosi’s plan and now Obama’s to release oil from the SPR is a short term plan and a bad one as we have just entered hurricane season and already we have reached “E” that’s 5 TS/hurricanes this season thus far.

Texas Gal on August 4, 2008 at 1:57 PM

So this is all about eeeeeevil oil companies making horrrrrible profits, eh?

Ever consider that those would be AMERICAN evil oil companies, and that the alternative is that the very same profits — or more — would flow into the hands of the Saudis, Chavez, Putin, or the Iranians? And that none of these other entities pay Federal taxes?

If you’re going to demonize an institution, wouldn’t it be better to pick one that isn’t sited in America, doesn’t provide American jobs, or isn’t widely represented in American’s pension plans?

cthulhu on August 4, 2008 at 2:06 PM

bevslape on August 4, 2008 at 2:10 PM

It’s all about politics.

And that’s the problem. It shouldn’t be. There are things that should be off-limits to politics.

There are bi-partisan ways out of this mess that can satisfy everyone (except the militant enviromentalists, of course, who won’t be satisfied until the human race is extinct). Crank up production now while granting tax breaks for alternative energy research (what we really need is a Manhattan Project-type organization for alt energy, but that’s for another post), and let the market take care of the rest. If the alternative-energy vehicles that come onto the market are just as good, or better, than internal-combustion engine cars then they’ll sell better. Hybrids are inferior to gas vehicles in almost every way imaginable (except for gas mileage, and even that’s debatable), so gas cars still outsell hybrids.

Anyway, my initial comment was that if we can get it voted on and passed now, I’d rather do that than play politics with it and use it as a wedge-issue for the election. That would make our side no better than the Democrats.

Of course, if the Democrats want to continue playing politics then by all means, wedge-issue away!

I hope you don’t think Pelosi et al will simply allow drilling without trying to kneecap it.

She’ll try to and, like Shamnesty, more reasonable men and women will take it to the American people, who’ll then proceede to flood the Congressional switchboard.
To paraphrase her own words - we can’t politicize our way out of this, and she’ll learn that quickly enough.

We need bench strength in Congress, we’ve only got 3 months to go for maximum advantage, and this also puts Obama in quicksand, trying to wallow his way out.

But given the choice between fixing the problem now and gaining temporary political advantage, I’ll take fixing the problem now. Purposely attempting to drag this out until the election if there is a possibility of a solution makes us no better than them.

crazy_legs on August 4, 2008 at 2:14 PM

Brilliant! It’d be just like that stupid evil genius Bush to do something like that.

misterpeasea on August 4, 2008 at 2:34 PM

I think I’m still being mis-read here. If they can either fix the problem or gain political advantage, I want them to fix the problem. If they can’t because the Dem “leadership” continues obstructing, then by all means drag it into the election.

crazy_legs on August 4, 2008 at 2:31 PM

Yes, but if Bush were to call a special session and all Pelosi does is gavel and gavel out, the Dems will go on record as not even wanting to fix the issue even when the President calls the session in. This will give the GOP great fodder for this falls elections. Granted that sound political, but as long as the Dems are in control of congress, nothing is going to happen and it is hurting all Americans by keeping the price of oil high.

ConservativePartyNow on August 4, 2008 at 2:36 PM

I dub Reid and Pelosi: Drill-killa and Bride.

Don’t need to change the picture one bit to envisage that.

And I agree, great fodder for the elections, and the Dems would deserve what they would have coming to them. What is a bit disturbing to me is the amount of people on our side who are chomping at the bit for this to still be an issue come the elections.

Don’t get me wrong - I don’t relish the thought of a congress and executive branch populated by Dems. Obama is such a moron that he would be nothing more than a rubber-stamp for Pelosi. But this issue goes beyond that. If they can pass legislation to get more production cranked up and bring prices down, great! Personally, I don’t care who’s watch it happens on - just get it done! 70% of the American public wants domestic production, so do it!

Also, think of this - if they hold a session and the Dems march in lock-step with Pelosi and vote production down, it will also be a huge election issue. “We tried to work with the Democrats, but they voted against gas price relief and energy independance.”

Believe me, if it were any other issue (except national security and the war) I’d be right there wanting the political advantage going into the election that dragging it out might give. But not this one. If there’s a chance that it can be fixed - for the good of the country we have to try.

BTW Barry, I tuned up my car this weekend and checked my tire pressure (neither of which I think you are able to do). I guess the oil crisis is solved now.

Les in NC on August 4, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Hey!!! I did the same thing. Does that mean that we now have an oil surplus?

Yoop on August 4, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Folks:

You might want to remember I said this was a “fine letter.” I’m a conservative. I’m not a liberal. I’m also not stupid, and it’s just stupid and juvenile to refer to Democrats as a noun when the term is supposed to be an adjective.

“it’s just stupid and juvenile to refer to Democrats as a noun when the term is supposed to be an adjective.”

Can we all agree that “Democrat” is a pejorative?
