Obama to relaunch energy policy in car country; Update: Tire gauges!

posted at 8:40 am on August 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Barack Obama will “launch” the energy policy today that he released late last week — before he began his reversal on off-shore drilling.  Interestingly, he’ll push it in Lansing, Michigan, where the oil supply crisis has created dark times for auto manufacturers.  According to the AP, Obama’s plan looks long on redistribution and short on real solutions, especially those that will help Michigan’s biggest industry:

Obama says he wants to tax oil companies’ windfall profits and use some of the money to help motorists pay for more expensive gasoline.

He says he also wants to use $50 billion to help jump-start job creation and help local communities struggling in the economic downturn.

Obama already has an energy policy on his website, one that has been part of his campaign for months.  The word “drill” does not appear anywhere in this policy, even today.  The word “oil” never appears in the context of increased domestic production.  Instead, Obama refers to “big oil” and the need to reduce our use of oil by 35% over the next twenty years.

How do we get there?  Keep inflating those tires, folks:

  • Increase Fuel Economy Standards
  • Invest in Developing Advanced Vehicles
  • Build Biofuel Distribution Infrastructure
  • Build More Livable and Sustainable Communities

Read this as mandates, mandates, mandates, all to avoid drilling for abundant resources we have at our disposal.  Obama’s plan assumes that car manufacturers need government direction to build cars that will get 250 mpg, and that government should “plan” communities so that people don’t drive themselves to work.  It relies heavily on the biofuel concept — not surprising given the industry’s lobbyists in his campaign — even while current government subsidies drive food prices to the poing where people now starve.

The last bullet point should really raise Michigan’s ire.  Obama wants to sink a fortune into expanding public transportation, top-down community planning, and remove the need for automobiles:

Over the longer term, we know that the amount of fuel we will use is directly related to our land use decisions and development patterns, much of which have been organized around the principle of cheap gasoline. Barack Obama believes that we must move beyond our simple fixation of investing so many of our transportation dollars in serving drivers and that we must make more investments that make it easier for us to walk, bicycle and access other transportation alternatives.

Not only does Obama believe that, but as President, he would spend hundreds of billions of dollars in making cars more or less obsolete within the suburban ring of American cities.  How would that affect Michigan’s economy?  Maybe someone in Lansing will ask him today.  The rest of us can wonder why the government would spend so much money to force manufacturers to produce cars to specs that can’t be met while undercutting their market at the same time.

I suspect that these contradictions will be met with the usual Obama strategy of flip-flopping and obfuscation.  Michigan voters should not be fooled.  If they think they’re having tough economic times now, wait until Obama takes office.  Michigan should be the loudest “drill here, drill now” state in the Union.

Update: According to Mark Halperin, the McCain campaign will distribute tire gauges to Obama’s Lansing audience and the media covering the event, with the words “Obama’s Energy Plan” on the side.  It seems that the McCain campaign has begun to hit its stride.

Lansing may be in Michigan…which is pretty hard hit by any standard…but Lansing is a hot bed of the Left in Michigan.

All I can say is that that message will not fly in Michigan. I think Obama needs to take a little drive on W-696 and S I-275 before he heads up to Lansing — help him get his bearings straight.

Shoveling more government money to Democrat insiders for half-baked, pie-in-the-sky energy schemes, great plan, Bambi.

What a worthless waste of skin Barack Obama is. Anyone even slightly considering casting a vote for this guy this fall is a complete idiot.

There are a few people in Michigan who are beginning to wake up to the damage being done to that state by the democrat party.

I am not sure that there are enough of them yet, and they are opposed by very vocal, fanatical support for extreme leftist economic policies.

Paid political activists lobby local city and county governments while covert infiltration of local government portrays that paid political activity as ‘grass roots’ community organizers. Of course local news media simply repeats the propaganda spoon fed them by those activist.

The only way to take back this state is rebuild the state from the local organizations on up. Unfortunately, the only people who want to be in government are those fanatical leftists who believe that government (the leftists) is the only answer to the problems they face. Confronting those activists at the local level is so unpleasant, no one wants to do it.

Obama says he wants to tax oil companies’ windfall profits and use some of the money to help motorists pay for more expensive gasoline.

Will this offset the federal gas tax in whole or in part? If so, why not just axe the federal gas tax? Too simple?

Akzed on August 4, 2008 at 9:01 AM

Obama says he wants to tax oil companies’ windfall profits and use some of the money to help motorists pay for more expensive gasoline.

But, the oil companies, like any other business, will pass the cost of the taxes on to the consumer in the form of higher gas prices. obama should just come out and say he is going to nationalize the oil companies and save us a few rounds of this bullsh*t…

rbb on August 4, 2008 at 9:02 AM

So let me get this straight: He wants to “Increase Fuel Economy Standards” and simultaneously “Build Biofuel Distribution Infrastructure”? What effect will meeting higher CAFE standards have on the price of cars? What effect will increased use of biofuels have on the price of food? Obama isn’t trying to help the poor, he’s trying to make them more dependent on government.

trubble on August 4, 2008 at 9:03 AM

Has he BEEN to Montana? Does he really expect us who live here to be suddenly driving those little Smart Cars in 7 feet of snow?

I live in the Helena area. Is he really expecting a city as small as Helena to sink a bunch of money into public transportation? How will THAT be affordable in a city this size?

mjk on August 4, 2008 at 9:03 AM

P.S. Tire gauges = Hilarious! I think I love the McCain campaign and its relentless mocking of the Messiah.

mjk on August 4, 2008 at 9:05 AM

Oh, where to begin on this…

– Cities that have grown up after World War II have does so with their outer area and suburbs built around the automobile and the nation’s highway system, to the point that many no longer commute downtown to work, but from one outer area to another. To get people out of their cars with no viable alternative means you’d have to build a prohibitively expensive system of mass transit in those areas.

– Biofuel conversion is far less simple than Obama makesit sound. Fidel Castro already has attacked the U.S. for converting food crops like corn into fuel, which should have killed it for Democrats right there, but even if you’re dealing with non-food crops, the issues of extraction using the least amount of energy possible (i.e. less energy to process than it takes to grow the crop) and growing/processing in locations that may have to be isolated from normal harvest areas are things the Democrats never think of.

The netroots’ negative reaction to Obama’s attempt to flip-flop on offshore oil drilling probably led to this latest effort — unlike 1992, when the left was willing to shut up when Bill Clinton tacked to the center, even Obama can’t get them to keep their mouths and their typing fingers quiet this time when he deviates from their agenda. But for a party that was saying just a few days ago that “Drilling Won’t Solve the Problem” because it would take 10 years to get the new production on-line, none of Barack’s latest ideas are going to do anything to bring the price of gas down by September, either.

Michigan should be the loudest “drill here, drill now” state in the Union.

“Should” being the keyword there. You are talking about a state that *should* have thrown out Gov Granholm and *should* have thrown out Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and yet… what did Michigan do? Re-elected them both.

Michiganders are not very bright, so don’t expect much from this state. They blame everything on Boooooosh and “big oil”. Even Bill Ford Jr is a huge greenie and global warming nut. I know. I worked there since 1999 (until getting laid off this June) and got to read all his freaking global warming and diversity initiative e-mails.

I expect the Obamessiah to come to Michigan and, along with Granholm, spew his crap and the people of Michigan will ooooh and aaaaaah and not care one whit about the nonsense coming from him, as all they will hear are harps and song birds singing.

I work in the service industry, and I’m seeing these lil smart cars and some lil mini truck things showing up in several driveways; driveways primarily owned by Liberal sheep. Can’t wait to see what these people think they’re going to do with these things come January. I drive a F-150 4×4, and I still have a few hair raising experiences every winter on these frozen roads.

How do I know these people are Liberal sheep? The Obama 08 bumper stickers were the first indication.

Is there anyone anywhere who truly buys any of this idiocy?

NoDonkey on August 4, 2008 at 8:52 AM

Yeah, the entire leadership of the Democratic Party.

What John McCain has to do is pry off the silent majority (’majority’ he said hopefully) of working stiffs who need (and like) their cars, and have their life’s savings tied up in their suburban houses, all the people Obambi wants to screw, but who still vote for the Democrats reflexively.

But Sen. McCain will not succeed in doing this if he persists in pandering to the liberals and ‘independents’ as a Democrat-Lite. He has to present a clear alternative to Obambi, and he has to make it clear that Obambi represents a danger to everyday American lifestyles. John McCain can’t do this by embracing ‘climate change’ and echoing the Democrats by telling people he knows how tough things are for them.

Things aren’t tough for most people in this country, and most people don’t want pessimism and drastic changes in their way of life, which is what the Democrats offer. Americans want optimism and confidence in the road ahead. If McCain can’t offer that, he deserves to lose.

MrLynn on August 4, 2008 at 9:12 AM

Interestingly, he’ll push it in Lansing, Michigan, where the oil supply crisis has created dark times for auto manufacturers.

I’m curious to know Ed’s analysis of Lansing. It’s the State capital, but somewhat removed from the Detroit auto scene, I think. U of M is much closer there.

Needless to say, it’s a liberal cluster-bump at either school, so any of Obambi’s lefty energy-policy propaganda will be well received – autos be damned.

It’s also a big agricultural school, and I can’t help but wonder if that plays some role in the choice.

Jaibones on August 4, 2008 at 9:26 AM

…force manufacturers to produce cars to specs that can’t be met…

What are you talking about, Ed? Of course those standards can be met. All you have to do is make the cars out of paper and balsa wood. That you couldn’t take them out in the rain and that they’d be deathtraps which would make your insurance rates skyrocket is just a distraction.

Kafir on August 4, 2008 at 9:28 AM

U of M is much closer there.

Actually, Michigan State (MSU) is in East Lansing, closest to Lansing. But you are correct that UM is also closer to Lansing than Detroit as well.

The McCain campaign has been doing really well. I’m an ardent McCain supporter, but I have to say…I’m a little surprised at the ingenuity of this campaign. They are well on top of things.

Very refreshing to see the GOP, finally, acting like winners.

JetBoy on August 4, 2008 at 9:33 AM

See, each of those things Obama proposes is good. Put them all together, though, and you spell disaster for places like Michigan. Obama’s just got to be honest – he wants the auto industry to tank and become much smaller and eco-friendly than it is today.

That may be a good thing, but it sure as hell isn’t a good thing for Michigan. If he was a new type of politician, he would tell Michigan voters that they need to start getting other industries in their region because autos are on the way out. But he won’t. He’ll lie and tell them that everything’s going to be OK and the 100mpg cars that they should produce even though public transit is going to eliminate the need for cars will seal the deal…

So tired of this crap.

Seixon on August 4, 2008 at 9:35 AM

So let’s leave these questions up to those who know best, not you, but your government masters.

Soon we’ll all be forced into buying clown cars, which is what people who vote for Democrats deserve. But not the rest of us.

I received a McCain bumper sticker in the mail, but I’m not putting it on my vehicle simply because my car got keyed right under the GW Bush sticker back in 04. Dear Barry-O,
Here’s another great idea for lowering gas costs. If you make a big sail out of a canvas tarp and 2X4s, and bolt it onto the top of your Prius, you can save even more fuel, especially when the wind’s really blowing. If we could get everybody to do this, just think of all the fuel we could save…just think…
You’re welcome.

Oh! Auto manufacturers were in dark times long before oil supply became a crisis! Michigan has been in an economic slump for the last couple years primarily due to an over-dependence on manufacturing jobs and an underwhelming governor when it comes to finding new business that doesn’t involve semi-skilled union labor putting something together.

Actually, the entire state is closely tied to the auto industry, not just Detroit. I live on the west coast of MI, in Rep. Hoekstra’s district (who I sent an email to for his work on Friday), and have worked in the auto industry since 1999. Hence the screen name- I’m trying to get out. But what happens in Detroit, happens all over Michigan. There are suppliers and OEM plants all over the entire state, and the term ‘Detroit’ when referring to the auto industry is almost a misnomer any more. The big three are still headquartered there, but most of the work happens elsewhere.

That said, this state has been turning more and more purple ever since jenny took over, and is ripe for the picking if McCain can get his message out. Detroit city will never change, but the rest of the state is open to it.

Top-down community planning, especially when the government is involved, is one of the most arrogant concepts ever, and it’s inherently totalitarian in nature. They think they know best what, how and where everything is to be built, and this is to dictate what we all do and where and how we do it. This is completely backwards as cities and communities naturally develop according to the people’s needs and desires in free societies.

Again, it’s arrogant totalitarianism. This is by far the scariest thing I’ve heard from this guy thus far.

Just dropped my car off at the mechanic shop. The owner drove me back home. I’ve known him for years. He started busting on Obama right off the bat. He owns his own business after working for a major car dealer as a chief mechanic for a number of years. Employs about a dozen mechanics, one accountant and a receptionist.

He just signed papers to open up his first branch shop across the border in Michigan. People, normal people, are keeping cars longer and he ssaw a need, and an opportunity, and took the risk.

But, according to the Dem logic…he is “rich.” He is making “excess profits.”

His “profits” are at a percentage way above Exxon right now. Which is why he can afford to buy another shop, and employ another dozen people to work for him. He is concerned that being “rich” he will be taxed even more…simply because he took risk, invested his own money, and worked his butt off to build a business from his garage to a six-bay mechanic shop, but, he makes a good profit, and this is something any Dem politician consistently rail about. Obama being no exception.

Average guys building their own business. This is how America was built. Those mom and pop businesses that hire less than 25 employees pass out more paychecks than any of the corporations. But, they are part of those “evil” people who believe that there is merit in profit. After all, isn’t what this is all about? Profit is a dirty word, right?

If Americans elect Obama, those mom and pop busineses are going to be something our grandchildren will look back on as we look back on blacksmiths and canal boatmen.

Hasn’t anyone told Obama that Lenin’s 70-year experiment in Communism failed?

Like in the cartoons, that’s what happens to your eyes when you see the food prices – POING!!!!

tire gauges…with the words “Obama’s Energy Plan” on the side

There’s some campaign memorabilia for Antiques Roadshow in a couple of decades.

eeyore on August 4, 2008 at 10:44 AM

If they imprinted BOHICA on the other side of those tire guages…can’t make it much more clear what Obama is going to do to us.

coldwarrior on August 4, 2008 at 10:48 AM

I think Michigan is a conservative state.. but it has the deep blue black hole (Detoilet) that offsets anything the rest of the state wants..

as well as the union presence.. but I’ve met quite a few teamsters who have been on the right side of the fence..

most of the state is pro hunting/fishing types..

I lived in Lansing for about 10 years and finally had to leave due to the job situation..

state wide elections, tend to go blue (grandholm, levine, empty skirt Stabenow)

the state house, solid conservative..

DaveC on August 4, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Remember that photo of Obama riding around on the flat tire. Maybe he can use one of those handy little gauges, or are tire gauges only to be mandated for us little people?

forest on August 4, 2008 at 10:53 AM

If I still lived there, I would try to go to check it out..

DaveC on August 4, 2008 at 10:54 AM

The tire gauges are a great idea. If McCain keeps this up he may make me forget his arrogance on illegal immigration…maybe.

brtex on August 4, 2008 at 10:56 AM

Obama: “Your problem with me is that I’m a black”.
Us: “Our problem with you is that you’re a red”.

kurtzz3 on August 4, 2008 at 11:06 AM

the McCain campaign will distribute tire gauges to Obama’s Lansing audience and the media covering the event, with the words “Obama’s Energy Plan” on the side.

Pure gold; I hope that is true!

carbon_footprint on August 4, 2008 at 11:15 AM

I want a snarky tire gauge!

aero on August 4, 2008 at 10:18 AM

I want one too. I’ll keep it right next to my gun and my bible.

/snark

BohicaTwentyTwo on August 4, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Um, Barry, isn’t oil a “biofuel“?

These people are complete morons.

benrand on August 4, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Barack Obama believes that we must move beyond our simple fixation of investing so many of our transportation dollars in serving drivers and that we must make more investments that make it easier for us to walk, bicycle and access other transportation alternatives.

It will never be easy to walk or bicycle in Texas–we are spread out, but especially on a day like today where we will hit 108.

carbon_footprint on August 4, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Barack Obama is an arrogant man.

carbon_footprint on August 4, 2008 at 11:29 AM

It’s related to our “land use” decisions?! How is my office, which employs hundreds, going to be within walking distance of all of them?

The Great Leap Forward, Obama-style.

PattyJ on August 4, 2008 at 11:32 AM

Driving our own cars is racist. Walking, cycling, and public transportation celebrate our diversity.

Akzed on August 4, 2008 at 11:33 AM

See, each of those things Obama proposes is good. Put them all together, though, and you spell disaster for places like Michigan. Obama’s just got to be honest – he wants the auto industry to tank and become much smaller and eco-friendly than it is today.

I agree. The idea of walkable communities is a great one, and a lifestyle I personally love. Talk about a longer than 10 year solution, though. Michigan is in the midst of a foreclosure crisis and I don’t really see developers investing in more development right now, especially if they don’t know where the population centers will pan out.

Even in other cities and suburbs homes are built where they are. What are you going to do, subsidize a strip mall for every 1,000 houses?

Another round of rebates is a loser. If he keeps going with that, he may as well have just supported Hillarys $5000/baby plan. Free money!

I have talked to a lot of people who voted dem for one reason or another who are scared to death of Obama and his socialistic ways. They look at Jenny’s record, and the state of the state when she took office and what it is now, and are seeing the light.

ConservativeLawStudent on August 4, 2008 at 10:26 AM

They might want to take a look at Illinois as well, and see what years of Obama & Friends’ tax-and-spend policies in the Illinois state house have done to that state. Not to mention Chicago, which is “benefitting” from Obama & Co.’s soft-on-crime policies.

AZCoyote on August 4, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Over the longer term, we know that the amount of fuel we will use is directly related to our land use decisions and development patterns, much of which have been organized around the principle of cheap gasoline. Barack Obama believes that we must move beyond our simple fixation of investing so many of our transportation dollars in serving drivers and that we must make more investments that make it easier for us to walk, bicycle and access other transportation alternatives.

This is just so much horse manure. I think I’ll start calling Barack Obama “Big Barry” as a tribute to all his Big Government ideas.

One question right off the bat for Big Barry:

How do “land use” plans help truckers cut back on their driving?

Buy Danish on August 4, 2008 at 11:56 AM

I love the tire gauge idea, but the media will not take it well and will slam McCain for it.

WoosterOh on August 4, 2008 at 12:11 PM

They’re bumping rush for this idiot.

Barry is talking about “we’re going to give a 1000 dollar rebate with the oil co’s profits.”

So they aren’t private firms in barry’s little moron world.

benrand on August 4, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Looks like Barry just flopped back to the extreme left. This speech is disturbing. I used to think people calling him a communist were going too far, but I’m not so sure anymore.

He just basically called for a command economy.

Now I know why he thought he’d be in office for 10 years – he’s think in terms of two 5-year plans.

forest on August 4, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Obama is reading off the teleprompter right from the Book of Barry…a lot of sweet sounding phraes in a proper preacher cadence…but where’s the meat? No facts. Tons of allegations…a multitude of promises.

I know things are tough in Michigan, I’m up there a lot, but I hope these people are actually listening to what The One is saying.

From the applause, seems like they’ve either stacked the audience with paid ringers or the folks in Lansing are pretty stupid.

I hope it is the former, not the latter. For their sake and for all of ours. too.

coldwarrior on August 4, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Here’s a thought.

Instead of all the car companies laying off thousands of people. They all could go in on a joint venture of creating an offshore drilling company. That would be one way of counterbalancing the affects of high oil prices that they are feeling on their bottom lines. I know it would take awhile to get it up and running, but the oil companies don’t seem too excited about doing it.
Just a thought.

cjn on August 4, 2008 at 12:26 PM

the McCain campaign will distribute tire gauges to Obama’s Lansing audience and the media covering the event, with the words “Obama’s Energy Plan” on the side.

How do I get one! Those will be collectors items!

upinak on August 4, 2008 at 12:26 PM

as for Lansing folk, there is enough DNC kool-aid drinkers to form a nice sized crowd there..

and carbon footprint… for what it costs to park downtown (assuming that is where he is speaking) it’s worth it to walk from someplace with free parking than pay what the meter says.. or take a bus..

DaveC on August 4, 2008 at 12:29 PM

Man, this guy is taking cluelessness to a new level.

rockmom on August 4, 2008 at 12:30 PM

If you want one of those Obama guages, McCain has them for a $25 donation.

eeyore on August 4, 2008 at 12:33 PM

t will never be easy to walk or bicycle in Texas–we are spread out, but especially on a day like today where we will hit 108.

carbon_footprint on August 4, 2008 at 11:28 AM

More proof that Obama doesn’t understand the world outside of the big cities in which he has spent his entire life. Except when he was in Indonesia, he has never lived in a suburb or a small town and neither has his wife. This all sounds fabulous if you live in Chicago. The rest of the country? Not so much.

rockmom on August 4, 2008 at 12:35 PM

You do not need a car to collect welfare.

infidel on August 4, 2008 at 12:39 PM

Yeah. Obama believes tire pressure gauges are the solution. Yeah, he really means that THAT is the answer. Obviously.
