Bob Herbert: Why is everyone missing the phallic symbols in McCain’s Britney ad?

Between this and last week’s Godwin-ing of the crowd scenes, I’m honestly curious to see where the left takes the critique next. One would think they’d either run out of cards to play or would quietly pocket the ones they have left lest they make themselves look more ridiculous, but each new day brings a fresh load of semiotic ore mined. It’s the “Ulysses” of campaign ads — the only limit on what it means is your own imagination. Still, Herbert’s reading warrants special mention, not only because it manages to be simultaneously exceedingly paranoid and pedestrian but because he mangles a fact here so basic that it discredits his entire claim to be a close reader. The tower seen behind Obama at the beginning of the ad is obviously the Victory Column in Berlin — where he recently spoke to 200,000 people, remember? — not the Leaning Tower of Pisa or Washington Monument. For Herbert to get that wrong despite the massive publicity surrounding the location of the speech, especially after it was moved from the Brandenburg Gate, is like having a chyron beneath him that reads, “I don’t know what I’m talking about.” But then, none of the MSNBC staff corrected him so I guess they don’t know what they’re talking about either. Click the image to watch.
Update: I mentioned the fact that Obama has compared himself to Paris Hilton in at least three different posts last week, but for some reason that news is just breaking big today so here’s a link to Newsbusters with the details.
Update: Ah, I see Mark Finkelstein’s post mentions that the Morning Joe crew did eventually point out to Herbert that he had his monuments mixed up. Exonerated!

Apparently Herbert is yet another fine product of our public schools. Thank you NEA.

Hey Herbert, if you’re looking for phallic symbols go to San Fransisco, Speaker Pelosi’s district. Zombietime has photos that are right up your alley.
NOTE: Do not go there folks, this is not a tease, do not go there, this is a warning.

We see the big arrogant prick parading around like he has already won. We don’t need to put in subtle phallic symbols, we see him for what he is.

I heard about this on Howie Carr today, and nearly drove off the road I was laughing so hard.
Maybe Miss South Carolina can lend Bob a map. No ideas about what psychiatrist he should visit though.

Interesting that Bob Herbert is the only one seeing or noticing phallic symbols.
RJL on August 4, 2008 at 5:18 PM
Wow … stupendously dumb. I don’t know Bob, why don’t you tell me why you see phallicism in eveything. Sounds like Bob lives in the closet, no wonder he can’t tell what the Washington monument, Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Berlin Victory Column look like.
McCain should ask Obama to throw Bob under the bus … I hear there’s quite a party going on under there.
darwin on August 4, 2008 at 5:18 PM
I found more meaning and intellect in this:
“I personally believe, that U.S. Americans,
are unable to do so,
because uh,
some, people out there, in our nation don’t have maps.
and uh…
I believe that our education like such as in South Africa,
and the Iraq,
everywhere like such as…
and, I believe they should uh,
our education over here,
in the U.S. should help the U.S.
or should help South Africa,
and should help the Iraq and Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future,
for us.”
Yes. Miss South Carolina makes far more sense than Herbert.

McCain needs a black man or woman as his running mate. That will shut these clowns up.
The question should be: “What does it say about Bob Herbert that he is the only person seeing phallic symbols in McCain’s Britney ad?”

If there was one election where the selection of a qualified woman or black VP would win the election, it’s this one. It’s a no brainer for the McCain camp.
mylegsareswollen on August 4, 2008 at 5:21 PM
If you view the world through racial lenses, you’re going to “see” racism or racialism in every act, no matter how innocent that behavior is. And the best part of this (for the practioner) is that you can simply never be proven wrong.
That Mr. Herbert gets to disseminate this nonsense in a major newspaper is, frankly, astonishing.
SteveMG on August 4, 2008 at 5:22 PM
Oh hell with it:
Look, lefties keep thinking it’s some kind of chicanery going on, some subliminal messages that keep people voting Republican and conservative. It’s gotta be that funny looking thing in some freeze frame of a 30-second commerical, some “dog whistle” that only they can see or something. They never stop to think, hey, maybe Americans are just not that into you and your ideas, lefties.

This whole psychoanalyzing of the Hilton-Spears ad by Obama supporters is beyond stupid. I mean really, come on, is this the best you can do?
DanStark on August 4, 2008 at 5:36 PM
You know coldwarrior, I really like a lot of your insight. But I really don’t see why it is necessary to criticize the public schools because Herbert is saying something stupid.
Yes, some public schools have problems. But they aren’t all bad, some are great, and some of us (many?) here have children attending them.
MayBee on August 4, 2008 at 5:37 PM
Wow. It used to be one had to rely on blogs to see people beclown themselves so thoroughly. Now one merely has to turn on MSNBC to get their daily dose of stupid.
It’s like watching an installment of “America’s Dumbest Criminals”, but with criminals replaced with prefessional commentators. It’s just unfortunate that the only people who choose to watch MSNBC are those dumb enough to buy into the Obama (pbuh) cheerleading stupidity.

While this kind of nonsense is quite irritating it’s also quite rewarding. The more these nuts in the liberal media cry racism for every criticism of Obama, the more voters will be tuning them out and turning away from Obama.

Jeeze, I just watched the clip. I think Dick Morris was correct that McCain should stick to security and energy in ads against Obama. The Dims are totally incapable of understanding a simple analogy. Next we’ll be hearing from another Obamite that they saw UFOs and that McCain is trying to suggest that Obama is really an alien! Good Lord.

They know they can’t credibly deny that Obama was accusing McCain of running a racist campaign. So the Messiah has spoken and now the flock must invent the evidence to support the accusation. “You mean you DON’T see the menacingly large black penises dancing across your screen? Seriously, you don’t?!”

MayBee on August 4, 2008 at 5:37 PM –
No, not all public schools. Obviously.
I have a secondary education degree (Certified in American History, World History, Geography, Civics, Psychology, World Cultural Studies…a one person social studies department.) Earned this degree after my retirement.
I taught in Toledo, Ohio public schools for a short while. Perhaps the most heavily unionized and union-controlled school system in the nation outside of New York City or Detroit, by the NEA’s own figures. In my high school alone we had over a dozen teachers on the roster receiving full pay who never showed up, and had several score students at each grade level who were “enrolled” and passed from grade level to grade level but never attended — ghost students are common when federal funds are dependent on enrollment figures. The school administration called it necessary, I called it fraud. We had two teachers on full salary who were proscribed by law from coming anywhere closer than 1000 feet of a school. Sex convictions involving students. But, the union maintained that they had not violated any union policy so they could not be fired. I was not accepted as a fulltime tenure-trrack teacher because I refused to join the union. Thus ended my teaching career.
I’ve raised five kids. All public school kids. Over the years I’ve had to move several times to get them into schools that actually taught the kids, challenged the kids, educated the kids, and weren’t just glorified daycare centers. I know a good teacher when I see one, I know a bad teacher when I see one.
I blame the power and influence of the NEA for the most part, but also blame a good number of teachers who have no business in the classroom and perhaps should not have been allowed in in the first place.
This Herbert guy…from my experience with public schools in several cities across America…is not at all the aberation, he is pretty much a norm. When we fire a city council member for using a Scandanavian word for miserly, or go after a city council member for using an accepted astronomical term in context…and thousands cheer these events…yes, I have an attitude about the state of education in America.
If I offended you, I apologize. Our education system in America offends me. I don’t expect an apology from the NEA.

Relax Dude, it’s the pitchers, right? Like most of us, you don’t believe it until you “see” it. Intellectually I ‘knew it’, but emotionally didn’t really believe it until those images.
You see images of some stoner smokin’ a little weed, and you kinda giggle a little, or go ‘tsk tsk’. You see your government chose to legalize gambling, and you kinda shrug and say ‘what are we gonna do’.
You try to engage the left in reason debate, you try to keep your arguments on an academic level, but once you see those images and realize that is the road the democrat party is taking this country, you get P’Od.
Then you try to explain to the libertarians that there have to be limits to behavior, and they reject your arguments.
So now we have a choice between McCain, and Obama. Pick one.
