It’s on: House GOP’s oil protest to resume tomorrow; Update: Obama’s flip-flop inspired us, say sources

Said the boss this morning, “Seems to me House Republicans should be holding a public event every day in Washington from now until the end of the Democrats’ vacation to call attention to Nancy’s anti-drilling intransigence and her refusal to hold votes on the issue.” From her lips to the leadership’s ear. Just across from Boehner’s office:
Washington, Aug 3 - House Republicans will be back on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives again Monday to continue the unprecedented protest that began last Friday, when dozens of Republicans joined hundreds of American citizens on the House floor to protest Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) decision to send Congress home for the rest of the summer without a vote on legislation to lower gas prices and move America toward energy independence.
In an urgent memo sent to GOP Members and staff Saturday (“A Call to Action on American Energy”), Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) hailed Friday’s action, which was led by Reps. Mike Pence (R-IN), Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA), Tom Price (R-GA), and others, and encouraged House Republicans to return to the Capitol beginning Monday morning to help keep the historic effort going.
“It’s not a request we make lightly. But the American people are suffering,” Boehner and Blunt said in the memo. “The consequences of continued congressional inaction on gas prices are unacceptable. We’ve called on the Speaker to call Congress back into an emergency session this month and schedule a vote on the American Energy Act. We must continue to make a stand until the Speaker complies.”
More than a dozen Republicans have already committed to being there; Pete Hoekstra, leveraging the buzz the GOP got in the blogosphere on Friday for its use of new media, sent forth the good word this afternoon via Twitter. No word yet on what they’re planning, but if you’re not yet convinced that the wind is at their back on this, go read the transcript at Newsbusters of Stephanopoulos beating his head against a wall trying to get a straight answer out of Pelosi on why she won’t allow a vote on drilling.
Update: At least 30 Republicans are in now, says ABC. Sweeter still:
One House Republican says, “I’m a 25 year veteran of the U.S. Congress, and I’ve never seen anything like this.”
GOP members say they would not be holding this debate tomorrow, if the Democratic nominee had not modified his position on off shore drilling.
They believe that with Obama and his Republican opponent John McCain, appearing to be in “agreement” about off shore drilling, then Speaker Nancy Pelosi should recall the Congress from recess, and put an energy bill on the floor in August.

As a retarded American I take this as an insult. alphie is more of a twit than anything else.
JonRoss on August 3, 2008 at 7:38 PM
That’s not entirely true Alphie. Remember that Reagan had the people flood the Congress with phone calls, telegrams, and letters until the Democratic Leadership had no choice but to approve Reagan’s tax cut, a move they had opposed quite vocally.
Also, the merits of an issue are often ignored. For example, the truth is that the ANWR is a barren wasteland, and actual pictures of it show it to be a frozen tundra bereft of life. I just watched a video where the guide swore they were at the ANWR, with beautiful mountains in the background, and everyone in the picture wearing shirtsleeves.
The average temperature in July is 40 degrees F. That is only a few degrees above freezing, and I doubt that anyone would comfortably be standing around talking about how beautiful and unspoiled the area is in that kind of cold without jackets, hats, things like that.
However you can check out some pictures easily.
Also, if an issue is to be decided strictly upon it’s merits, then why do the Liberals run to Court to get the Judge to order what they can’t get done strictly by the merits? I offer an example, the decisions to use sonar in training the Navy is not decided by our elected representatives based upon merit, but is decided by a judge based upon junk science.
The issue of Gay Marriage was not decided in the public forum based upon merits, but in a court room by judges based upon political idealism. Merit is a good idea, but it must be used honestly.
So a majority of people want drilling, and we’re not going to allow it because based upon the merits of the arguments, the elected representatives will decide based upon political idealism. Sounds fair, but where does it stop? If all I need to do is decide things based upon political idealism, then why bother with debates, or elections? Cancel the protest tomorrow guys, we’re going to decide this issue based strictly upon merits, unless the left decides they don’t like the decision, then they’ll sue.

Don’t make me start feeling bad about Alphie. He strikes me as someone who has gotten “the letter”. I think it comes from A.A.R.P. in the letter is tells you that you have now reached the age that allows you to say anything and everything you damn well please. It doesn’t have to make sense and it can be as rude as you can make it. It is one of the perks of longevity. I look forward to mine.

So you don’t want to drill to lower the oil prices. But, what about our children. Do you want them to pay ten dollars a gallon for gas and ship all of the jobs to China. I thought that dem’s did’nt like outsourcing.
Johan Klaus on August 3, 2008 at 7:47 PM
” I offer an example, the decisions to use sonar in training the Navy is not decided by our elected representatives based upon merit, but is decided by a judge based upon junk science.”
Precisely! When one of our carriers or other major ships gets nailed by a Chicom torpedo in the Taiwan Straits…can we put that judge on trial as an accessory to murder? Talkked to a recently reited Senior Master Chief at the time this ridiculous ruling came down. His concern was that sonar operators have got to be able to develop “ear”…a very important part of their job…and the only way to do so is to use sonar and train and train with active sonar…so one can distinguish the fiant pingsd of what is out there before they get into shot distance. Can’t do it on a simulator. has to be live. Lots of “stuff” in the ocean…each having its own “ping.” Dumb. Just plain dumb.
But, you are very correct about Reagan and going over the heads of Congress to their employers. Us. The American people. It works.
The majority of people want drilling. And the footprint in ANWR is about the size of the Dulles International Airport in an area nearly the size of Connecticut.

Don’t worry. I recently read about a study in which researchers determined that people with very low IQ’s are actually much happier than those with high IQ’s. Finally at the end she admitted what is behind her rationale for blocking drilling. Alternative fuels will only be developed if the government can interfere with the market and deny the oil companies access to the OCS, ANWR, and the shale deposits in the Rockies. She would rather we suffer a depression and loss of growth of our economy, if it means a focus on trying to develop alternative fuels.
If she wasn’t a blatant ideologue, she would be an idiot. Perhaps the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

I actually wondered on occasion if csdeven was Allah’s sadistic sock puppet, since AP enjoyed baiting us about Fred so much. But I think csdeven was around long before the Fred stuff started and at one time said some fairly reasonable stuff.
Alphie, on the other hand, has appeared recently from nowhere, and there has not been a registration period in some time. Hmmmmmmmm….

1GooDDaDDy on August 3, 2008 at 8:53 PM
Lemme see: Boehner wants all the Republicans to show up, but he won’t be there. That’s what I call dedication.
And what is Jorge Boosh doing? This from Associated Press: “CAMP DAVID, Md. - President Bush welcomed Dubai’s ruler to his presidential retreat on Sunday, returning the favor for the opulent hospitality he received in the United Arab Emirates this year.”
We’re being had yet again, people. I don’t think it’s so much ideology as it is the general laziness and downright crookedness that seems to infect all politicians.
If the reps can do some good by babbling away in the dark, empty chamber, more power to ‘em. They certainly seem to have the “base” energized, and all it cost them was a couple of hours and a few press releases.
Looks to me as if Pelosi will get the last laugh, and that disgusts me.

Tuari on August 3, 2008 at 9:13 PM
HI-larious :) Of course not. I know it’s rather political to look at it this way, though, but I think the open issue benefits Republicans more than an actual result. A better time for the “emergency” to develop would be the week before the Dem convention. Then energy can overshadow their little shindig .
BryanS on August 3, 2008 at 9:16 PM
So what’s stopping you from starting your own oil company and competing with the oligarchy? When Congress opens up more land and offshore areas for leases, you can bid on a lease. Oh wait, your Democratic friends and their oh so green base won’t let us put up those areas for lease auctions, so if anyone is perpetuating an oligarchy, it’s the democrats.
rokemronnie on August 3, 2008 at 9:21 PM
Fixed.
Sorry, Cindy. For all I have tried to believe Jorge Boosh was the best we could hope for in ‘00 and ‘04, he has been a major disappointment in many areas that really matter.
While I still admit he was better than Gore and Kerry, I refuse to cut him any slack on oil, immigration and, frankly, resolve.
It’s an indication of how awful the Dem candidates were. And they’ve managed to do even worse this year!

I’m wondering if the RNCC is urging any Republican challengers to incumbent Democrats to get their butts down their to add their voices and maybe get some television face time. It would certainly look good if thee were hundred or a hundred Republican challengers down there. Maybe they could take a day to put them all in the gallery for a half a day and then stream out to the lobby do make video statements to the people in their district and get a group picture on the steps of the Capitol.

While they may set wholesale prices on gasoline, the fact is that the majority of gasoline retailers are not owned by oil companies (one exception being your buddy, Hugo Chavez, whose Venezuelan state oil company owns Citgo, its distributors, and a healthy chunk of the retail outlets too).
The person who sets the price on the pump is the one who owns the gas station, not their wholesale supplier.

Sorry Mr. Scribbler, I am not so cynical. I made the calls and wrote the emails for border security but I don’t think the people who are for open borders are bad, I just think that the world changed dramatically on 9/11. Our policy wasn’t logical. And I do believe that President Bush would be very happy to see our oil companies reap the benefits of the market over the Saudis. I know that being a former (albeit unsuccessful) oil man is suppose to be awful, I think when you have been in that section of the business world and low oil prices closed down domestic pumps, you make friends with the leaders of other oil producing nations. Then 9/11, carried out by fellow countrymen of your friends, that’s a fine line to walk. Did you dislike or mistrust the Arabs before 9/11?

For thew idiots that can’t understand that a vote to allow more drilling would lower the price immediately:
Let’s say information came out that so many more farmers were growing corn this year that there would be 30% more corn harvested this fall than last year. What would happen to the price of corn now? It would go down IMMEDIATELY.Even the corn sitting in silos would be worth less now because the future market would know that this there would be a lot of extra corn and this price would be lower. They would also be negotiating contracts to buy corn this fall and they’d offer less for the contract knowing the price would be lower this fall.
On the other hand, let’s say a “corn blight” or drought was going to cut the corn crop 30% this year. Supply will be the same so the price would go UP immediately. The corn in the silos would be more valuable because less corn would be for sale this fall.
Now replace “corn blight or drought” with corn grown specifically for ethanol and you’ll understand why corn prices have jumped so much in the last few years.
Oil prices work the same way.Tell Nancy Pelosi and alphie.

It’s one thing to argue with someone that hasn’t a clue about what he/she is talking about, but AP is getting the traffic he wants from our troll-allo-allo. Plus I think it gives the troll some satisfaction in playing the conservUposerGame.
Republicans can take advantage of this sweet opportunity that’s been handed to them on a silver platter. It won’t help Obama’s campaign much either since he’s flip-flopping on this also.
McCain would be wise to hammer this also, even though his tepid campaign hasn’t been vocal about this enough. Maybe McCain’s learning to equate payroll taxes as taxes when he want to lower taxes.
Whereas Obama’s $1K stimulus plan off the oil companies profits will only be passed on to the pump. Does anyone see that coming down the pike?

The Public should not be allowed onto the floor. And the doors should be locked. Whoever let the public onto the floor should be reprimanded, and the enforcement of the recess of the House should be carried out by some authority. There’s a common decency that is disheveled when the raucous rule the podium.
For that matter, in our often misguided posts, we forgot to mention that (according to GOP aides) neither Boehner nor Blunt will be in attendance on Monday or for the rest of the week for that matter. Taking the classic commander from beyond the hill position.
If they really wanted to make this an issue, they could have filibustered the vote to go on recess. And if they really wanted to brandish their new-found oratory, they could of held a press conference or better yet displayed themeslves as such on the floor, after all that is their job.

President Toor, good grief. Of what country? You don’t filibuster in the House.

It’s hard to see the real world when you are stuck in your moms basement and his browser links to the Huffington Post as the #1 blogspot next to this one.
Cornflakes are called flakes for nuthin…. even though their raw material just went up in cost. Corn was never meant for automobile consumption.

If McCain REALLY had any smarts he’d be there tomorrow with them.
SouthernGent on August 3, 2008 at 10:13 PM
You’re just saying that to get a stratagem out of us, yes?
I know I shouldn’t ……
Answer me this, Oh clever one, how come congress has never been able to charge them with collusion?
Yet, you seem to have all the answers? How is that?
Kini on August 3, 2008 at 10:13 PM
DITTO!
Kini on August 3, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Kini, they meant to (charge them with collusion) but first they had to get steroids out baseball. Priorities, priorities.

Alphie, how was dinner, dear. What did Mom cook?

I wonder when Nancy is using her broom for tranportation does she ever worry that a House might fall on her? Oh alright, I’ll shut up and go to bed. It’s late anyway.

we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender. - Winston Churchill
It is time that somebody put their foot down and that FOOT is ME. - Dean Wormer
OK, maybe not a perfect grouping of quotations, but the operative words are FIGHT and FOOT. Where am I going with this? Who knows? I just feel like scrappin’ because these people have been screwing us for so long. Screwing us on energy. Screwing us on the war. Screwing us on Social Security. Screwing us on, well, damn near everything. I’ve had it. If the Republican finally have their backs up, then I’m in.
Oh, and Alfie? I’ve got a gas pump here. Why don’t you suck on it? I know you want to.

Ordinary1 provided this on another thread, on topic.
Entelechy on August 3, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Churchill didn’t actually say this, he hired an impersonator. Just had to set the record straight.
doodleduh on August 3, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Ugh! ya’ got me…that really hurt. Especially coming from such a well informed soul as yourself. Dang, most Americans think like you do about Texans. Us Texans are going to get depressed over your assessment.
All of the oil wells I worked on were just over the river in Oklahoma. But the folks up there thought the same way as we did about oil. And alphie, you don’t know Jack.
cozmo on August 3, 2008 at 10:39 PM
First I heard of that. Is it meaningful? Without hijacking this thread can you give one source for your assertion? Was Churchill not available? In an undisclosed location?
But the Dean Wormer quote was spot on. I saw it myself. I think it followed ‘I hate those guys.’

I can only guess, but I’ll bet Tater Tots was on the menu. :)

Right now she’s more worried about having a derrick fall on her.
