Close shaves: The new Gaza/West Bank war

posted at 11:00 am on August 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Only the Palestinians could get this ridiculous:

Hamas has resumed its policy of shaving mustaches of political opponents to humiliate them, Fatah officials said Wednesday.

Hamas resorted to this form of punishment in the past after arresting senior Fatah representatives in the Gaza Strip, the officials said.

Hamas, for its part, accused the Palestinian Authority security forces of shaving the beards of detained Hamas officials in the West Bank.

The latest victim of the mustache-shaving policy is Nafez al-Namnam, a top Fatah operative in the Strip.

How important are moustaches?  Take a look at the Jerusalem Post’s reporting on the afterthought in the official complaint:

The Aksa Martyrs Brigades issued a statement strongly condemning the shaving of Namnam’s mustache and threatening retaliation. It said that Namnam and his son were also tortured while in detention [emphasis mine -- Ed].

Those scoundrels dared shave his moustache while they had Namnam in custody!  The horror!  Oh, yeah, by the way, they also tortured him, if anyone cares.

It certainly beats suicide bombs and bulldozer attacks, but then again, Hamas and Fatah usually reserve those for Israelis.  Shaving off moustaches is an outrage, but killing women and children is commendable.  Someone remind me why we should support giving either of these groups a state.

Fatah shaved off Hamas members’ beards several months ago. And poor Namnam had worn his mustache for thirty years.

/But if we give them a state, they’ll learn to get along

A man’s mustache is his glory, and should be shown to all the world. A woman’s hair is her glory, and must be hidden … oh, never mind.

njcommuter on August 3, 2008 at 11:06 AM

The term “bald-faced liar” (often misquoted as bold-faced) hearkens back to the ancient Eastern custom of shaving of facial hair from men who were caught being deceitful.

jgapinoy on August 3, 2008 at 11:09 AM

No, this is one of the many world issues like global warming I don’t understand. Global warming shifts facts and symptoms to where what was considered definitive a couple of years ago, like the term global warming for example, is now out the window to a new set of problems. But we are dead on sure that we have to do something to combat it. We’re not sure what it is, but we’re going to do something to combat it.
And of course, we have the Palestinians. In my lifetime, I haven’t seen these people do anything to deserve a state of their own; even by medieval standards, their actions toward Israel are barbaric. And nothing has changed. Their rhetoric is the same; their actions still violent; yet year after year, Europe drags us toward the notion that they deserve a state. Why? They don’t deserve a city, unless it’s one giant cell block. You can probably sort out the non murderous ones in a couple of weeks but by and large due to indoctrination, almost that whole population is so far gone in their hatred it will be 2 to 3 generations before Israel will have someone they can talk to. Unreal.

Does this mean that shaving cream commercials are racist?

exhelodrvr on August 3, 2008 at 11:09 AM

When I first entered “corporate America” in the late 1960s having any hair on your face other than your eyebrows and lashes meant not even getting an interview. It you were male of course. That conintued on until the mid 1970s.

My son recently graduated from an independent non-military coed high school. If a boy arrived at school without being clean shaven he was given a demerit and a disposable razor and a can of foam and sent to the men’s room to scrape it off. I myself shave about every ten days when I feel the cooties starting to crawl around in the undergrowth.

The problem is that it’s not just Europe that’s ‘dragging us’ toward the notion that they deserve a state. It’s Israel too.

If we had purposely shaved off mustaches at Gitmo to humiliate prisoners, that would have been torture.

I think it’s time to talk of a three state solution. Leave Gaza to it’s own devises and negotiate solely with the West Bank on the status of the West Bank. That would go a long way towards Israel not needing to provide any special access between the West Bank and the Insane Asylum.

Dusty on August 3, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Oh yeah, and it might be a good time to start some talk of ICC trials of top Hamas official.

TheSitRep on August 3, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Mr. Ed.

It’s not ridiculous. It’s the public humiliation, the intimidation. It’s being singled out as an enemy. It’s the us vs them mob mentality. It’s being branded with the scarlet letter, the star of David, branded a witch.

If you focus on the mustache (Geraldo quakes in fear, Bolton remains defiant) you miss the point, and I know you have not missed the point.

It’s tribal identity one step short of the lynch mob.

It’s a fifty-fifty chance I’d go homicidal, or leave town. Well maybe a third possibility, round up a group of my buds (presuming I had any) and return the favor.

I say put a wall around the place and let’m stew in their own hatred.

Not a great idea. If the IDF were to leave the ‘West Bank,’ Hamas would be in charge there in no time.

But the truth is that the differences between Hamas and Fatah are tactical only. They share the same ultimate goal.

Carl in Jerusalem on August 3, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Terrorists shaving terrorists.

I had to laugh at this one. Those terrorists probably had lice and flees anyway.

Sure, your scenario of Hamas taking over is plausible, maybe even probable.

I presume you are not saying a three state solution is not a great idea because you want Israel to occupy the West Bank forever. Am I right?

If so, are you saying the two state solution is better because nothing will get accomplished until both territories act like humans and postponing West Bank negotiations are an effort to drag Gaza back to a semblance of civilization closer to the WB? If not, then what is your reason to say it isn’t a great idea, because I don’t see a line of argument that makes much sense for choosing two over three.

Are these people capable of doing anything, well productive?

All they do is fight and kill one another, and worse, real people.

If they had to produce their own food, the Palestinians would starve to death in a month. Which would solve the problem, by the way.

What percentage of the Palestinian population works to produce anything at all of value? .001%?

It’s like an entire population of juvenile delinquents. Utterly useless parasites.

Let’s not forget the old Gaza/West Bank war, which has resulted in 9 dead, dozens injured and Fatah aligned thugs running to Israel for salvation.

Israel should move all the Palestinians to Gaza and let them fight it out. And when the fighting is done, they can declare war on the one survivor and shoot him. Problem solved.

Exactly. As obvious as this is, it still amazes me that time and time again, each of our last Presidents and SoS’s venture somewhere across the ocean to discuss permanent peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. They have to know full well that it will not ever be accomplished.

NoDonkey on August 3, 2008 at 11:46 AM

No, these simple but violent people are historically and culturally retarded. They are just nomadic camel herders that abuse their women.
The only thing their culture does is consume food ,blow up children and commit honor killings.
They have done nothing good for mankind, (since Islam started) they are much like locusts upon the land.
Here is a list of what the Arab have giving to western culture
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
0.
That is it, the numbers themselves.

Only 6 have won Nobel prizes but their Jewish brothers have won 165.

I think part of their hang up is that they are actually subconsciously ashamed of themselves. They know that their lives suck so bad that they look to their bloody and hateful religion for validation.

TheSitRep on August 3, 2008 at 12:20 PM

To borrow from another poster years ago,

Pales/Hamas are parasites that feed only on hatred. The world should stop enabling their existence and “let them eat their hatred.”

SoldiersMom on August 3, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Well I guess it’s better than putting their hand in a bucket of water or drawing genitalia on their faces with permanent marker.

DanStark on August 3, 2008 at 12:28 PM

“The only thing their culture does is consume food ,blow up children and commit honor killings.”

What I fail to see is exactly what is gained by continuing to hand out sustenance to these people.

They are miserable people. They all are obsessed with killing in dying.

Why not oblige them regarding the latter? If a mass group of people want to commit suicide, preventing it is an act of mercy IF they are peaceful people who have simply lost their way.

This is a group of iredeemable sociopaths and psychopaths, whose only desire in life is to kill other people. Giving them the sustinance it takes to keep them alive is akin to allowing a horse to live after it has shattered its leg.

It’s not kind, it’s not merciful, it just prolongs the suffering.

Israelis want to live in Peace, this should never be forgotten. That is why we talk to fatah, and will continue to talk to them despite their inability or motives, almost no Israelis want to rule over the Palestinians, it is not in our interests to rule over these people, they contribute nearly zero to society, they are a burden, let them prosper or rot, but do so on their own.

Abu Mazen as absurd a ‘leader’ as he is has recognized Israel’s right to exist. We should always pursue peace and defend ourselves at the same time, these are not mutually exclusive goals, Israel has been carrying out those goals for 60 years. The notion we can disregard the concept of peace with the Palestinians is a sure recipe for the destruction of Israel.

Negotiate through strength. We will not be holding on to large swaths of Palestinian populated territory because almost no Israelis desire or wish this – On the left, in the center or on the right, so we have a lot to offer, we should secure peace and the right to pursue it by negotiation and subsequently by force if circumstance dictates. By not pursuing peace we give up our justification to also use force as a free democratic society. The goal should be peace, securing Jerusalem, and the major settlement blocks, we do not need villages teeming with several hundred thousand welfare basket cases.

Let’s hope we can find a partner for this, and that everyone will be able to grow facial hair freely.

saus on August 3, 2008 at 12:46 PM

Yes, the Palestinians tend to be ridiculous, grotesque, and dangerous, but if reports can be believed at all, their numbers are burgeoning, along with those of the Israeli Arabs. It seems likely the two, together, will eventually overwhelm the Israel Jews, unless that liberal-democratic people take steps to preserve their life and liberty.

ej_pez on August 3, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Abu Mazen as absurd a ‘leader’ as he is has recognized Israel’s right to exist.

That’s a highly debatable statement.

We will not be holding on to large swaths of Palestinian populated territory because almost no Israelis desire or wish this – On the left, in the center or on the right, so we have a lot to offer, we should secure peace and the right to pursue it by negotiation and subsequently by force if circumstance dictates.

Personally, I vote for voluntary transfer. 76% of Israelis favor it. And lots of ‘Palestinians’ would like to leave.

innominatus on August 3, 2008 at 1:04 PM

Carl or Saus:

Do you feel Jerusalem will have to be divided to “secure peace?”

Also, I cannot imagine that providing Palestinians their own state will remotely provide for more security for Israel when the Palestinians, et al. believe that the real issue is the right of Israel to exist. I guess that’s why I don’t fully understand the continuing “negotiations,” unless it is to simply buy Israel more time.

Input appreciated!

mimi1220 on August 3, 2008 at 1:49 PM

Someone remind me why we should support giving either of these groups a state.

1. Because rewarding their bad behavior will instantly turn them into peace-loving, civilized good neighbors.

2. Because that grinning idiot, Jimmy Carter, says it’s the right thing to do, and Jimmy Carter is sooooooo smart.

3. Because legitimizing the Iranian-backed terrorist activities will discourage Iran from further meddling and instigation of hostile acts.

hillbillyjim on August 3, 2008 at 2:13 PM

Do you feel Jerusalem will have to be divided to “secure peace?”

If Jerusalem is divided it will bring about war. Remember Gilo during 2000-02? That’s what most of the city would be like. They’d be in machine gun firing range of most of the Jewish neighborhoods in the city.

The continuing negotiations are because many (maybe even most) Israelis cannot live with the reality that we will never be a ‘normal’ country where people can go to shopping malls and movie theaters and restaurants without being searched and ride buses without keeping a lookout for men wearing overcoats in the middle of the summer. Never unless we are willing to get rid of those ‘Palestinians’ who won’t live in peace.

Instead, our government continues to expel Jews from their homes while anyone who suggests that the ‘Palestinians’ should leave is branded as a ‘racist.’

Carl in Jerusalem on August 3, 2008 at 2:25 PM

Hi Mimi, we will never give up the eternal capitol of Israel, this & the golan and the settlements in the West Bank have over 200,000 Israelis living there, they are annexed territory, they are part of the land of Israel. The Old City, Jerusalem, east & west are the State of Israel now and there will be no divisions. The Star of David flies above these lands and we kill anyone who tries to remove it – This is our right. We cannot transfer them, but we can also refuse to be transfered.

As for the rest, it is mostly autonomous now, they already have a state controlled by palestinians. We control whether it will be recognized as such. From there we will give to our friends for peace, what we give them is the legitimacy over their autonomy, the use of land we conquered from Jordan, assurance we will not kill them and roll tanks over their heads, peace. They will never have a state as is commonly envisioned, more like Luxembourg, demilitarized, with heavy ties & reliance on the regional states, Israel, Egypt & Jordan. They are too small, too dependent and there is no longer enough territory for anything else. We cannot forget, 60 years have passed, life has go on while the Arabs stagnate.

If they wanted a state in the most classical sense, armies, full borders, etc they should have taken it in 1948. It has been 60 years, now they can have what is offered or they can die trying to take it all from us. But we will always extend our hand in peace, it is the leaders, the guerrilla groups, the terrorists, & Islamists that want war. The majority of Palestinians want to live in Peace, just like Jordanians do so now, just like Egypt even though we are not best friends, we are neighbors. We stay off their lawn, they stay off ours. The Palestinians will always have the IDF outside, we will control the borders with Jordan & Egypt in a regional security pact. That is why we must go and topple Hamas in gaza, their existence, the world & Israel allowing them to have a terror state there jeopardizes the whole concept of peace itself.

The PA has its own elections, its justice system (its own legal, court, prison & policing system) controls its economy or lack thereof, its own educational system, their own passports, their own medical and health systems, their own electricity / utilities control, etc etc – this is a state, near total full autonomy. All that is left is for them to show they can handle it, and also they are ready to sign their names to peace.. so far so bad.

In the Arab world respect and honour are everything. These gestures of shaving someone’s beard are a tremendous dishonour. According to western values it’s not a very big deal, but there it is everything.

One of the shaming things about shaving off some big shot’s mustache against his will is that his whole clan is dishonoured.
