Brazile: Of course Obama injects race into the campaign

posted at 2:11 pm on August 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Donna Brazile admitted the obvious on ABC’s This Week earlier today, but she tries to pin the blame on John McCain anyway.  After George Will points out three different times in the last six weeks that Obama has brought up the race issue, two in which he accused McCain and the Republicans of using it, Brazile allowed that Obama had done so — but only to make everyone feel more comfortable about it:

Uh, no. I’d maybe give Brazile the benefit about the Berlin speech, in which he mentioned it as a positive, but clearly in June and last week Obama meant it as an accusation. It wasn’t an inclusive statement, or a historical note, but an allegation that McCain and his campaign used or will use race as a fear tactic. Unfortunately, they have exactly zero examples of this to bolster these smears.

Brazile gave her best shot at spinning this, but it clearly isn’t working, and even the national media has taken notice of it.

Obama’s campaign has done more to hurt the Black community than help. He was supposed to be “post-racial”, yet this campaign has done nothing but flare up the race wars even more. Nice job, Obamessiah.

This is getting hilarious. I’ve been leaving comments over on Jake Tappers ABC blog, and they have been removed within about two minutes of being posted. They are respectful, just not pro Obama. Almost all other commenters who aren’t pro Obama are having their comments deleted as well. It’s either spin, like Brazile, or whitewash, like the moderator on Jake’s blog.

Michael in MI on August 3, 2008 at 2:32 PM

Well, I don’t think the answer is all that obvious. It may not be apparent for some time what the effect of Obama’s campaign will be on blacks and race relations in general. I think it’s a debatable question.

Maybe I’m stupid too.

Those that view the world through the filter of racism will always find racism.

rockbend on August 3, 2008 at 2:38 PM

Anybody who overtly injects or talks about “race” is not fit to be the leader of the whole country- it’s cheap local politics.
Barack is unfit to lead anything other than a corrupt Chicago ward.
He is Jesse Jackson with a thinner resume.

jjshaka on August 3, 2008 at 2:38 PM

McCain’s campaign is gonna have to be squeaky clean on race for the next 3 months…not a bad move from Obama’s camp.

Whatever will Fudge Haus have to talk about?

allrsn on August 3, 2008 at 2:48 PM

I think it’s a debatable question.

mikeyboss on August 3, 2008 at 2:36 PM

I think it is debatable as well. From my own experience, maybe somewhat naive, I never thought about racism when it came to politics (which I’ve only followed since 9/12/2001) or in my personal life. I haven’t seen Blacks as Blacks, but just saw them as my friends in High School and college and my coworkers at work and now my neighbors where I live.

And when Obama ran for President, I didn’t judge him based on race, but rather his ideology and plans for America. And even when the Rev Wright and Pfleger and Farrakhan stuff came out, I didn’t just the Black community based on that, only Barack Obama.

But, the more this campaign has gone on and pundit after pundit, after Black leader after Black leader, after fellow Black politician after fellow Black politician after anecdote after anecdote in the mass media from angry Blacks after poll after poll showing Blacks en masse supporting Obama solely because he is Black… well, that made me stand up and take notice and question things.

Is there an underlying hatred of Whites in the Black community? Are most Black churches like that of TUCC? Does the Black community really want reparations?

And for a while, I was looking at my colleagues at work and average Blacks on the street – who before I never would have thought twice about in this context – and wondering… do they believe in the same ideology as Rev Wright and Barack Obama? Have I been this naive all along to think that America isn’t racist and we have all moved on from racism, except for the fringe race-baiters like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton? Are they not really fringe, but mainstream?

From watching just anecdotal evidence in the mass media and the entertainment industry with some Black celebrities being more open about Black-on-White racism, I think it is pretty relevant to analyze the overall effect of this campaign on the Black community. Both how the Black community feels in regards to having racism made a primary component of this campaign and in regards to how non-Blacks are now viewing the Black community.

But, if you want to call that stupid, so be it.

Michael in MI on August 3, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Ed,

Let’s not forget that Barry also used this tactic against Hillary during the primaries when he warned that people would twist his words and hoodwink and bamboozle them.

Maybe he thinks that since this tactic worked so well in South Carolina, it will work in the general election.

Brazelle speaks later about this subject on ABC News

But all we remember are the race riots and other race related incidents that occurred during his term.

I do want to remind us all of Rev. Jackson and Rev Sharpton’s reaction to Bill Cosby when he went into the black communities and tried to convince them they C O U L D get out, to look around and see how many blacks have already succeded.

Shaprton and Jackson and others went on the attack!! How dare any one try to explain to the black communities that they were not being supressed by the white man!! That in fact they did have opprotunities!!! Bill Cosby was shut up and thrown out.

This was only 5 or 6 years ago.

Oh you left out David Gergen’s ‘I’m a Southerner, and McCain is sending the message that Obama is uppity.’

To me that’s as bad, if not worse, than Brazile’s comment. It’s incorrect to suggest the campaign is raising the point that he’s uppity rather than haughty, which was the exact same supreme character flaw that Kerry had.

By the way, does Gergen know Kerry is white?

Were any of you uncomfortable by the Paris/Britney Barry is a celebrity ad? If so, this may be why:

This is a lesson in how dog whistles work.

If you’re not familiar with the term “dog whistle,” as it relates to politics, here’s a quick primer: As a literal dog whistle emits a pitch that only dogs can hear, a political dog whistle sends a message that only a particular constituency will hear (or intuitively understand).

Read all about this nefarious tactic here.

Of course the fact that the “particular constituency” who are hearing this dog whistle are exclusively Obama supporters is lost on the writer of this piece.

Ms. Brazile should know, she used that tactic herself in 2000 when she worked for Al Gore:

The latest Brazile outrage comes a little more than a month after she rather famously told the Washington Post that in her role as campaign manager she would not let the “white-boys” win. “A white-boy attitude” she explained, “is ‘I must exclude, denigrate, and leave behind.’”

marklmail on August 3, 2008 at 3:34 PM

You’re absolutely right. If McCain was getting 97% of the white vote, black people would yelling themselves horse screaming racism. I am so sick of the double standard. Looking Hispanic, blacks and Hispanics say things in front of me that they would not usually say in front of whites and it is very alarming. I hear more racist utterances coming from them than any white person I know. They have no compunction about using words like whitey, cracka, white-boy and the like. If we had a “white student union” or a “society of white engineers” in any school, they would be denounced and run off campus. Racism is alive and rampant and sanctioned by American society just like it was in the Jim Crow days. When are they going to make laws protecting whites and other groups that are the clear victims today.

Anybody who hasn’t read the Stanley Kurtz article (Buy Danish kindly provided a link to it in her 3:50 post in this thread) might want to take a look. I read it earlier this morning and it provides a lot of information about Obama’s record as an Illinois state senator — pushing affirmative action and racial set-aside programs, sponsoring all sorts of “social justice” welfare spending bills and pushing the state of Illinois to the brink of financial ruin.

Despite what the MSM and Obama’s surrogates have been telling people, Obama has been steeped in racial-identity politics his entire career. The popular myth that he is some sort of “post-racial” candidate is the biggest scam of all. Last week the MSM all ran headlines saying that Obama opposes reparations. What they failed to tell the readers/voters is that Obama opposes “reparations” in the same way that John McCain opposes “amnesty” for illegal aliens. Obama opposes the use of the word “reparations” because he knows it’s politically radioactive. But Obama supports “healing” the black community with more affirmative action and racial preference programs, and more expensive social welfare programs that benefit blacks. Obama absolutely wants more reparations, he just doesn’t want them in the form of direct payments to blacks, and he doesn’t want them to be called reparations.

Listening to John Fund who just said there is nothing wrong with those who will vote for Obama because of ethnic pride.

Connie on August 3, 2008 at 5:28 PM

And yet, no one among the Left can offer any credible reason why they think “White” ethnic pride is wrong, not as long as the Left continues to promote this “ethnic pride” issue from among their polarity as being supportable.

I never got invovled in any “ethnic pride” (nor racial thing related to that) in my entire lifetime — even younger, during our nation’s earlier fomentions on these issues), but this whole recent push by the Left to make the Presidency (and everything else, apparently) “about” “race” and/or “ethnicity” is offensive to me.

Thus, I now conclude the entire Sixties and Seventies were a waste of our nation’s time and that racism and ethnic supremacy remain alive among “other than White.”

The Left can’t have it one way — it’s either them continuing to rally on this hypnotic race-ethnicity trance stuff or it’s everyone retreats to their respective “race” or ethnicity and just resumes throwing stones at one another.

I mean by that, well, maybe the “White” race has moved farther along. We mostly stopped all of that a while ago. Unfortunately, it’s still there among other races and ethnicities.

Someone here wrote about comments they hear from Hispanics and Blacks about White people — I agree, after hearing many of those unabashed hate-speech terms, too.

S on August 3, 2008 at 7:04 PM

I was surprised when I moved to Hawaii and got pushed off sidewalks and driven off highways by “one finger saluting” people who were most certainly not “White.”

ninjapirate on August 3, 2008 at 6:51 PM

Actually, no, this is exactly what I was talking about in my comments. This is the reaction that Obama’s campaign is causing in many Americans. By having Black leaders and entertainers and average Blacks interviewed for news stories come out and defend Obama with regards to the TUCC stuff and the Farrakhan stuff, it causes people to believe that maybe Rev Wright and TUCC are not fringe, but actually are mainstream, as all Obama’s apologists have been saying.

This is why I stated initially that his campaign has done more damage than good. Because instead of people thinking that kind of nonsense was fringe, we now have a Presidential candidate state that Rev Wright represents the Black community and Obama’s apologists then come out and say the same things. It is only natural then that people start wondering if they are just playing politics and lying or if they are telling the truth and the Black community is really as radical and angry and racist as the Rev Wrights and the TUCC community.

Fund seems to miss the bigger point. This is not just about “ethnic pride”. This is about racist pride. The Left and Blacks call Condoleeza Rice and Clarence Thomas and any Black conservative/Republican an “Uncle Tom”, based on their politics. The reason people are voting for Obama is because he is Black AND racist. So if John Fund sees nothing wrong with that… well…

wow that was fun I was censord atleast 6 times another poster ‘Joyce’ was censored atleast twice.

Every post was straight and clean, every one. The worst was about censorship, one other (my third) was “Obama will be the best president since since Clinton”

I had a lot of fun discovering the biased and propagandic nature of that site. If you are looking for comedy go have some fun yourself.

Unfortunately I’m going to have to agree with Geraldine Ferraro and the Hildebeast; Obama is where he is only because he is black. He is the ultimate expression of affirmative action; A black dude that is there because he’s black and not because he is qualified for the position.

I wonder how they will spin the VP choice when it comes? Anyone they choose will be eminently more qualified to be POTUS than obama since they will select the person based on actual qualifications, and not skin color, for the job.

pathetic leftists.

Michael in MI on August 3, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Very well stated Michael… For me, it’s obvious that Obama injected the “race card” into his campaign with Hillary, and is doing the same with McCain. The race card is Obama’s number 1 weapon. This man will use every weapon in the Liberal tool chest; lying, cheating, inventing, fabricating, anything to cover up the fact that he is simply not qualified for the job of potus. Running 8-12 years ahead of his time was a serious roll of the dice for Obama and the DNC. When this things over with, he is either President of the United States, or he will be damaged goods for years to come; maybe for the rest of his political years.

I must say this; I was not raised to see black Americans as anything other than Americans with a different skin color than me. For the first time in my life, my vision of black Americans is some what tainted due to the Rev. Wright hatred of the whitey, and the exposure of deep resentment and entitlement held by many black Americans, including Obama.

Gee ninga, surprised you didn’t call for a permaband on Michael for having the audacity to speak from his heart; for having the audacity to throw political correctness under the bus, and tell it like it is.

Keemo on August 3, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Why? Isn’t that why the majority of blacks are supporting him?

Connie on August 3, 2008 at 5:34 PM

Well, the racism of the black community got past the gauntlet of the primary, so now it has gone underground. Against Hillary, a white liberal whose policy positions were virtually identical to Obama’s, he was drawing something like 90% of black votes toward the end.

But in the general election, blacks vote 90% + for any Democrat against any Republican, black, white or blue. So race is off the table for black voters now.

I would have thought that Obama would go to great effort to avoid any discussion of race now, when it cannot possibly help him. He couldn’t get less than 95% of the black vote now if he spit on Jesse Jackson.

Likewise. Use the word “black” to describe the color of your kettle, and you get deleted there. They seem a little squeamish to me.

The Press Tells Us What to Think, But Who’s Buying It?

Much of the political news over the past few days has centered on John McCain’s ads, “Celeb” and “The One,” that mock Barack Obama by portraying him as an empty suit, and on Obama’s claim that Republicans are trying to scare voters because he “doesn’t look like all those other Presidents on those dollar bills.’’ The New York Times editorial board predictably weighed in on Obama’s behalf, calling the Celeb ad a “racially tinged attack.”

How can this be, since the ad never mentions race, and has nothing to do with race? Because, the Times instructs us, it begins with image of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. The Times recalls an ad that “Republican operatives” ran against Harold Ford when he ran for the Senate in 2006:

That assault, too, began with videos juxtaposing Mr. Ford with young, white women.

The Ford ad is here; you can judge for yourself whether it was racist. (I think that in this context, “racist” can fairly be translated as “effective.”) But does the Times seriously believe that any ad that contains images of both a white woman and a black candidate is racist? (Don’t white women often appear in Obama’s own ads?) That strikes me as a very weird position, which perhaps reveals more about the Times editorialists than about campaign advertising.

In this case, the images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton were chosen because they are instantly-recognizable as “celebs” who are, as the Times puts it, notoriously “bubble-headed” and “publicity-seeking.” So, what if the McCain ad had used exclusively images of African-Americans who are notoriously bubble-headed and publicity-seeking with whom to compare Obama? Nicole Richie, say? In that case, a far more plausible claim could have been made that the ad was racist.

Needless to say, the Times defends Obama’s “dollar bills” line, which was the first injection of race into the campaign, on the risible ground that he was merely “the victim” of a “racial attack.” In the Times’ world, you simply cannot criticize an African-American candidate, or you are a racist. Unless, of course, the African-American is a Republican.

It doesn’t seem, though, that this sort of media instruction has had much effect. Today’s Rasmussen Reports contains these interesting findings:

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of the nation’s voters say they’ve seen news coverage of the McCain campaign commercial that includes images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton and suggests that Barack Obama is a celebrity just like them. Of those, just 22% say the ad was racist while 63% say it was not.

I assume those 22% are people who have not actually seen the ad, but are loyal Democrats trying to parrot the party line. More:

However, Obama’s comment that his Republican opponent will try to scare people because Obama does not look like all the other presidents on dollar bills was seen as racist by 53%.

This strikes me as pretty good evidence that Obama will have to campaign on the issues, and that his efforts to distract voters by crying “wolf” on race won’t succeed. (powerline)
