Blackout: Pelosi turns off the lights as GOP demands action on drilling; Update: Video added; Update: Protest ends — with “God Bless America”
posted at 2:00 pm on August 1, 2008 by Allahpundit
A transparent stunt but an awfully shrewd one. The cameras are off so we’re forced to rely on Politico for running updates. What a scene:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.
Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi’s refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess…
“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”
Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker’s Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.
“You’re not covering this, are you?” complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans “morons” for staying on the floor…
The scene on the floor is kind of crazy. Normally, members are not allowed to speak directly to the visitor galleries, or visitors are prohibited from cheering. But in this case, the members are walking up and down on the floor during their speeches, standing on cheers, the visitors are cheering loudly. Some members even brought in visitors, who are now sitting on the House floor in the seats normally filled by lawmakers, cheering and clapping. Very funny.
GOP whip Roy Blunt issued a statement asking all Republican House members who are still in town to come to the floor. Exit question: What are the odds that someone there will be smart enough to fetch a camcorder from one of the offices near the chamber and record this for YouTubing? Eric Cantor, the deputy whip, has shown some ‘Net savvy in the past. Chop chop.
Update: And no sooner do I write those words than I get a tip that Rep. John Culberson is taping — and Twittering! — outside the chamber. Stay tuned. Click the image to watch.
Update: The boss is pleased, especially with the use of new media to get the word out.
My main post on the House GOP revolt is here and I’ll keep updating it. But I’m breaking out a separate post on the Republicans’ very savvy use of Twitter to circumvent the Democrat blackout and overcome the absence of C-SPAN cameras– and their outreach to conservative blogs to spread the word.
This is the change we’ve been waiting for, Beltway GOP.
Finally!
Update: Pete Hokestra says Capitol Hill security is ready to shut down the party promptly at 4:30 lest the GOP reap any more goodwill from this than they already have. Meanwhile, Politico’s still updating fast and furiously. Money quote:
Rep. Tom Cole (Okla.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the dimly lit chamber is a “vision of the future by the Democrat Party: The lights are out, there’s no power, and the air conditioning is gonna go off soon.”
Update: It’s all over as of 5 p.m., carried off to the tune of “God Bless America.” NBC says even congressmen not known for oratory caught the fee-vah in the chamber. Says Mike Pence, “We will be here through the break.”

If the Republicans continue to make destruction of the environment their number one message for this election, I’m going to do something that I had not considered doing and vote Democratic. It’s quite annoying to me as I would prefer Senator Gramm’s economic policies to Obama’s socialism.
thuja on August 1, 2008 at 2:40 PM
Bush isn’t making appointments because he can’t. Rush explained it on his show earlier this week. The Dems pulled some kind of technical stunt where they aren’t really adjourned. Some congressman gets up and speaks once a day, and they rotate one per day so technically they’re still in session.
I’m not sure if this applies only to the Senate or to the House as well. Maybe someone could inquire and find out.

Why just vote, why not become one?
If you have no clue how oil and drilling are or can be concernign environmental regulations and what is done if somethign does happen, then you are just like the rest of the sheeple enviro wack jobs.
Here is your greenpeace shirt, now leave.
upinak on August 1, 2008 at 2:54 PM
The oil WILL come from somewhere, its not an option to just top our economy.
So, your choice, would you rather we drill here, where we have very tight environmental laws? or in a place where they don’t care about the environment…
Not to mention the problem of transporting all that oil to the US… it takes FUEL to do that, and has the chance of many tanker spills… Pipelines are MUCH more efficient, with less of a chance of problems….
So, to recap, buying foreign oil is WORSE for the environment the drilling here…. where it is used.

There’s some troll called “maslowbeer” trolling the comments on Culberson’s Qik page. He keeps spewing the conspiracy line about “Oil companies not using the leases they already have”. Oh yeah, and basically calling all Americans uneducated morons.
If you have a Qik account, I recommend logging in to counteract him with a tidal wave of support for Rep Culberson. Somebody has to drown out the committed trolls.
wearyman on August 1, 2008 at 2:56 PM
You know… interesting question…
Just how much FUEL does it take to import the oil we import?
I know a lot is coming from Mexico and Canada through Pipelines… but I Venezuelan oil has to be shipped…

This issue is just starting to get cranked up – kinda like the little earthquakes before a volcano blows up.
Pelosi blocking a vote on this is the height of arrogance and shows complete disregard for what people want and what we need. All of the pundits better be all over this tonight and for a while to come because I don’t think most people even know what’s going on yet.

Politico:
Update 3 – Democrats just turned out the lights again. Republicans cheered.
Update 4 – Republican leaders just sent out a notice looking for a bullhorn and leadership aides are trying to corral all the members who are still in town to come speak on the floor and sustain this one-sided debate.
Also, Republicans can thank Shadegg for turning on the microphones the first time. Apparently, the fiesty Arizona conservative started typing random codes into the chamber’s public address system and accidentally typed the correct code, allowing Republicans brief access to the microphone before it was turned off again.

The go out on the front steps of the Capitol Monday morning and have a mass rally for American energy independence, get every Republican candidate who is challenging a Democrat incumbent there to sign a pledge to support EVERY form of energy production in America. Tell the people this Democratic House has failed to do its job and then left for 5 weeks of vacation, while Americans have had to cancel their summer vacations due to high gas and food prices. Any employee who did this would be fired immediately. A CEO who left for vacation while his company was heading for bankruptcy would be removed! It’s time to FIRE the Do-nothing, Drill-nowhere Congress!!!

They’re going nuts on Slashdot.. The same people that would’ve applauded a Democrat stunt like this (and been severely ticked about the Republicans cutting off CSPAN and the press from the Democrats) are racing around talking about how the Democrats are just “doing their job” and the Republicans are whiners and children and anyway, drilling won’t solve the oil problem and Bush is stopping all the GOOD legislation anyway with his veto…

I like it. Still p-o’d that that loser Shep and his loser show aren’t covering it. Of course, it’s not like energy is an important issue to Americans or anything.
What’s even more shocking though is that the leading Dems doubled-down on “drill never – drill nowhere” when they could have moved instead. I was half-expecting Obama to come out for 44 1/2 nuclear power plants and drill everywhere but off Marin and Santa Monica, but he and they seem to be locked in after all.
