Blackout: Pelosi turns off the lights as GOP demands action on drilling; Update: Video added; Update: Protest ends — with “God Bless America”

A transparent stunt but an awfully shrewd one. The cameras are off so we’re forced to rely on Politico for running updates. What a scene:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.
Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi’s refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess…
“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”
Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker’s Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.
“You’re not covering this, are you?” complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans “morons” for staying on the floor…
The scene on the floor is kind of crazy. Normally, members are not allowed to speak directly to the visitor galleries, or visitors are prohibited from cheering. But in this case, the members are walking up and down on the floor during their speeches, standing on cheers, the visitors are cheering loudly. Some members even brought in visitors, who are now sitting on the House floor in the seats normally filled by lawmakers, cheering and clapping. Very funny.
GOP whip Roy Blunt issued a statement asking all Republican House members who are still in town to come to the floor. Exit question: What are the odds that someone there will be smart enough to fetch a camcorder from one of the offices near the chamber and record this for YouTubing? Eric Cantor, the deputy whip, has shown some ‘Net savvy in the past. Chop chop.
Update: And no sooner do I write those words than I get a tip that Rep. John Culberson is taping — and Twittering! — outside the chamber. Stay tuned. Click the image to watch.
Update: The boss is pleased, especially with the use of new media to get the word out.
My main post on the House GOP revolt is here and I’ll keep updating it. But I’m breaking out a separate post on the Republicans’ very savvy use of Twitter to circumvent the Democrat blackout and overcome the absence of C-SPAN cameras– and their outreach to conservative blogs to spread the word.
This is the change we’ve been waiting for, Beltway GOP.
Finally!
Update: Pete Hokestra says Capitol Hill security is ready to shut down the party promptly at 4:30 lest the GOP reap any more goodwill from this than they already have. Meanwhile, Politico’s still updating fast and furiously. Money quote:
Rep. Tom Cole (Okla.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the dimly lit chamber is a “vision of the future by the Democrat Party: The lights are out, there’s no power, and the air conditioning is gonna go off soon.”
Update: It’s all over as of 5 p.m., carried off to the tune of “God Bless America.” NBC says even congressmen not known for oratory caught the fee-vah in the chamber. Says Mike Pence, “We will be here through the break.”

God bless each one of the Representatives who participated in the protest today.
Speaker Pelosi wanted to shut down everything with regards to getting a bill passed for more oil drilling. No vote. And certainly no debate or discussion.
She does not own the House of Representatives. She does not own the American people. She works for us. We demand that Congress stop bowing down to radical environmentalists who won’t let us build anything anywhere. We demand that Congress stop standing in the way of action that will actually help the American people now. Gas prices are hurting Americans, and enough is enough.
If the Republicans had shut down debate in this manner when we were in the majority, Pelosi would be the first one to complain. She’d be the first one to cry out “tyranny”.
More of this, GOP. More, more, more. (Especially when the Stalinist Democrats try to silence talk radio with the Fairness Doctrine.)
I salute each of the great men who stood up for us today.

Why don’t you explain why you think our children and grandchildren are so incredibly stupid that they need us with our current knowledge to save them? Explained exactly what they need saving from. Why don’t you explain the unfettered arrogance that makes you think that your generation is the know all and is the last great hope for humans. Maybe your children are bloody retards but mine are brilliant. I fully expect that they will take the world by the b*lls and make it theirs just the same as all previous generations EXCEPT the current pussy one. I am so ashamed to part of the dumbest most arrogant condescending age of history. Yes I fear for my children because I fear people like you that think you know it all and that you have to save them from your boogie men. Grow up and give some semblance of credit to future generations. “Do it for the children” is not a call to create the advance technology and expand knowledge in order to give them the greatest most powerful nation in history but the cry to go back in time to grubbing in the forest to eek out a living. Ban the military for the children, give abortion on demand for the children, bun guns for the children, ban nuclear power for the children, ban capital punishment for the children, ban this, ban that for the children, keep the children drugged for their sake, become subservient to other nations for the children, open the borders for the children, create nanny state for the children, convert to socialism for the children. Why because we are so smart that we know our children are a bunch of retards that can’t wipe their own butts. Sorry but they are not the retards but this current generation sure the hell is and yes I do fear for them because I’m not sure they can survive the greatest threat humans have even faced. The age of stupidity and if they do manage to survive I surly hope we are reviled and looked down on as we should be because we certainly didn’t do anything to help them to survive but in fact threw everything we could to insure their destruction.

alphie just wants to be seen as some sort of educated antagonist … when in reality everything he’s claimed about “big oil” has been discredited and blown out of the water.
His arguments are nothing more than the tired one liners used for decades. Perhaps he should be making arguments against the government, state and federal, whose profits from oil taxes are obscene … and they want more.

Brilliant note!
What the DNC refuses to provide today creates discomfort. But the results this coming coldest of predicted winters move into survival realm. Recall the Chirac French government August vacations leaving the elderly unattended to die in the heat. Recall the Texas State Legislature that only meets biennially being abandoned by the entire Democrat population of representatives and senators who not only skipped town in order to block votes, but LEFT THE STATE, literally to the LEFT heading west into New Mexico in order to prevent a quorum required for vote. Now see the DNC strangling Americans from Capitol Hill, lynching us and leaving us dangling in the elements to rot while they abandon their Constitutional responsibilities. These insulated hypocrites are the ones with the big cars, big houses, jets and airliners, and wasteful habits telling us to starve for their own good.
At least Hoover never corrupted the system in order to gain power. He trusted in the balance of nature for the economy to recover from all of the wild speculation that preceded his presidency but crashed on his head. All of the wise legislation to prevent another Great Depression Era has since been wiped clean by bipartisan effort. Currently, Bush’s sponge reeks of corrupt rot that favors organized criminal interests. Would that he’d squeeze it dry before leaving office. With all the horrid bail-outs of contemporary robber barons, the promised trickle down effect hasn’t reached ground level suffering drought, and never will trickle down again given the powers that be and the legislation they’ve wrought. Damn the pervasive totalitarian fascist interests manipulating our government burning tax dollars to bail-out the ailing corrupt Putin-Russian oil-baron economy, the airlines, the corrupt mortgage lenders, coordinating food and fuel shortages via speculation not for production but for mere speculative profit and the power of manipulation over the entire population suffering shortages!
Pelosi has worn holes stuffing her stockings with Santa Taxpayer goods thieving the legislative system of Constitutional duties. She has absolutely no trust in anything beyond her grasp, and she’s holding tight to HER gavel to make the world HERS, safe for HER corrupt interests. Pelosi has shown the greatest disdain for Americans, for America, and for our Constitution! May she eat her own words for serving Americans Jim Crow.
Let the pendulum swing! Displace the unnatural Pelosi. Retrieve the gavel. VOTE DEMOCRATS OUT BY ELECTING REPUBLICANS. Pelosi will not be the Speaker of the House when she belongs to the MINORITY party.
If ever an election mattered, begin the 21st Century with some wisdom and respect for the Constitution.

Well done! I used to wonder why an excellent blog like this would tolerate some of the more absurd trolls that hang around. Now I see the wisdom in letting them stay: because sometimes they prod the other readers into writing a post like this.
In the wake of all that’s transpired over the last few years – the rise of the Troofer movement, the appearance of a hilariously unqualified joke candidate as the Democrat nominee, striding across the political stage like a living, breathing IQ test – it’s become clear that the greatest task facing our generation is providing the next one with the knowledge they need to survive and prosper.
jmarcure is right, these kids are brilliant, produced by an electronic age that would have been unimaginable when I was a child (just forty short years ago!) They need us to give them the tools to build the future. The other side looks to saddle them with a hopeless socialist economy, and a twisted fantasy of the past that will force them to waste valuable years re-discovering the basic truths of life. Even the most brilliant mind cannot reach its potential while “The lights are out, there’s no power, and the air conditioning is gonna go off soon.”

We must educate our own children, do not leave it to the federal govt, union supported, socialist propoganda machine called the public school system. Fortunately we have lots of tools at our disposal that did not exist years ago.
As for the greatest generation. What kind of generation demands someone supply them free medicine that did not exist ten years ago to keep them alive longer so they can continue working while collecting social security and demanding even more free benefits that they chose not to save, plan or pay for?

What will we need oil for? The energy experts in the Democrat Congress (failed attorneys, trophy wives/husbands, worthless legacies and race baiting poverty pimps), keep telling us that alternative fuel sources are right around the corner.
So once big oil goes belly up, we’ll all be running our cars on magic. That’s what the Democrats tell us, anyway.

great post. I get sick and tired of both reps and dems complaining about the future and especially debt. Hannity does this alot and as someone stated earlier it really frosts my poptart.
After world war II we had a debt to gdp ratio of over 120
%. today we are about 36% and dropping. I didnt have to make huge sacrifices to pay off that debt and neither did my parents or even their parents. Why….. BECAUSE THE ECONOMY GREW. Our generation and the ones before us knew that as long as people work to build on this great nation we all become more prosperous and as we become more prosperous we need more and more investments to continue that growth. We wont kick foreign oil without hard work and investments and when you attack the groups that invest (either pay the taxes or buy US t bills) then you lose your liquidity and when you do that you dont grow. ONLY THEN WILL OUR CHILDREN BE IN TROUBLE.

We benefit from the legacy of previous generations. Fighting King George or subsequent foes, building universities, or creating vaccines are some of the benefits that those long dead have left us. Improving the country while not leaving a huge debt, large taxes and unworkable entitlement programs is important for our children not because they are incapable but because we don’t want them to have to start disadvantaged by our actions.
dedalus on August 2, 2008 at 2:34 PM
And that isn’t a “childish retort”?
If you want to lower the debt, then you start cutting back on spending, cut taxes drastically and increase revenue. The first area to cut is entitlements. Approximately 1.5 trillion of our 2.9 trillion dollar budget went to entitlements. Democrats seek to increase this by adding socialized medicine to the rolls.
If you cut taxes and give people their own money back, you’d be surprised what they can afford. The government must let the market work, and that includes health care. Health care costs are high because government has it’s nose stuck right in the middle of it (that includes forcing hospitals to care for illegals, a major burden), and everything the government does costs many times more than it would on a free market.

And after we’ve worked our way through that, which by current estimates will be over 50 years from now, how about the hundreds of billions that Brazil has just discovered off their coast? And how about the Arctic Circle that Russia and the US have realized has huge potential in?
And after that…about TWO generations from now, meaning our kids and grandkids will have lived as well as us, there will be alternative measures, and yet still bitchers like you.

What, with at least some 2+ trillion barrels of known fossil fuel reserves accessible to the U.S., between crude oil, oil shale and coal? I suppose, more oil. What were you thinking?
As for what our children will use for energy – I sincerely hope it will be whatever alternative is the most efficient (i.e., cheap, practical, user-friendly) at the time, so their livelihoods are not continually held hostage to neo-Marxist (or similarly absurd) political doctrine.
In 200-300 years, you mean?
As to your metaphor of barnyard animals “sucking” America … who do you mean by “America”, if not us? Are *we* not America? Or is America something or somebody else to you?
Arguing about the use of American *resources* is one thing; but if you continue to talk of those things as America itself – as if America is a thing/object (or a set of things/objects) that greedy little invaders, that some have the nerve to call Americans, are plundering and exterminating – you’re liable to drive yourself mentally insane. It’s neither healthy nor fair to frame thought in such a manner.
The logical conclusion of such forms of thought – indeed the only remedy for the colossal and incalculable guilt your framing of the issue implies – is for us all to kill ourselves, to be done with it once and for all. To remove ourselves and our fellow “pigs” permanently, as it were, from “America”. Would that solve your problem?

Cindy Munford on August 2, 2008 at 3:53 PM
I already did but since you didnt get it maybe this will help
your sob story about our $9 trillion national debt leaves out some very important information: Our national economy is $14 trillion, and it has been growing faster than the debt. Guess what: That means our ability to service the debt has been improving.
Think the interest on the debt is a problem? Well, in the mid-1990s, it took around 15% of federal tax receipts to pay the net interest on the debt; but now, it only takes 9%. That’s a 40% reduction in the debt “burden” in a dozen years. Again, our ability to service the debt has been improving.
Think it would be a problem for future generations if, instead of paying down the debt, we allowed it to keep growing at a rate of, say, 2% every year, year in and year out? Well, if our economy and our federal tax receipts grew at a rate of, say, 3% every year, our debt “burden” would decrease, year in and year out. Future generations would be better off than we are, in spite of the debt growth.
So instead of stirring up fear about the negative side (the debt), why don’t we start giving at least equal time to the positive side: a growing economy? That’s the best antidote to a growing debt level.
I, for one, have heard enough whining about the debt and the interest payments. Does anyone have any ideas about how to enhance economic growth? If so, let’s hear them. Steve Forbes said it succinctly:
You can’t cut your way to prosperity; you’ve got to grow the economy.

The process of ‘de-institutionalizing’ mental patients was started by the bleeding heart liberals of Jimmy Carter’s presidency. The consequences of this failed policy didn’t begin to appear until after Carter left office.
Even before Regan took office there was published opposition to this failed policy. Note the date of publication of the article.
Thank you Merovign for the opportunity to clear up any misunderstanding of who is responsible for this failure of public policy.
Tell me, just why did you feel it was necessary to append you comment to a thread on an entirely different topic?
rockhauler on August 2, 2008 at 4:03 PM
Cindy and Rockhauler:
1) Yes, it was a joke. About alphie. Not about Reagan. He was turned out of an asylum, get it?
2) GOVERNOR Reagan, not PRESIDENT Reagan.
3) It was started before Carter, by the ACLU and others who sued starting in the 60s. Reagan just had the misfortune to deal with it during his Governorship. The story behind the joke is that the Dems always blame Reagan for turning out the inmates onto the street. Kind of like blaming Bush for stuff that happened before he was elected.
The. Joke.
And Rockhauler, thank you SO very much for missing the point of the joke so catastrophically that you felt the need to castigate me for “changing the topic.” Take a chill pill, dude.

“shutting down the asylums” So..now we have the homeless.

So if I crack a joke about the marital status of your parents at the time you were born, you won’t take offense?
Except you and I both know it won’t be a joke, and you and I both know you were attempting to implant an idea in someone’s head. Perhaps now you’ll understand your tricks aren’t working anymore.
And there is no need for me to ‘chill’ if I was any chiller, I’d be too kool.
rockhauler on August 2, 2008 at 4:20 PM
Maybe you’re a classical conservative: rule by kings, no individual rights, etc.
Yeah, lots of conservatives are impervious to facts, like this one: there are more proven reserves of oil right now than at any prior time in history.
And this: we have more oil in shale than Saudi Arabia has in oil.

…and I’m Aphrodite.
60 years of gi’me, gi’me, gi’me policies from your side…and here we are. Yes, the WoT and some dumb consevative decisions, like shamnesty, Pland D of Medicare, etc. are also to blame.
You are way too transparent, though.
Entelechy on August 2, 2008 at 4:29 PM
Have you read ANYTHING I’ve ever posted here, rockhauler? Evidently not.
You’re so damned troll-happy you’re looking for enemies under every post. Stop being so damned paranoid, the only thing I was trying to do here was mock alphie, evidently I’ve also pressed your panic button. Go have a glass of milk or something.
Merovign on August 2, 2008 at 4:29 PM
I vote to append this to jmarcure’s smackdown. You two better be careful, or he’ll sue you both for assault and battery.

Besides missing what appear to be obvious jokes, I can’t catch. A person has to know their weaknesses. Sorry. That being said I am not sure I think Alphie is crazy but I am positive about angry. I’d rather try to improve a situation then complain and denigrate people. To each his own.
Cindy Munford on August 2, 2008 at 4:33 PM
Merovign (4:29) you are transparent.

Merovign … you’re not crazy, I got the joke. I am kinda surprised at the reaction.

Just so you know, there’s a giant stick poking out of somewhere. You might want to remove it.

Alphie, you give “Idiot” a bad name…………….
Let me ask you a question,………………. how would your mind change if we knew through geography, plate tectonics, the earths mantel, energy and time that:
Alphie?
…………….. Alphie?

Keep telling us about how the sky is falling Chicken Little. Yes, debt’s a problem, but you solve debt by lowering your spending to a reasonable level, not hamstringing your ability to create wealth.
Of course, since I’m halfway convinced you lib twits want us to return to subsistence farming on small communes I’m sure you’ll gin up some ridiculous objection to that. For the children of course.
TheUnrepentantGeek on August 2, 2008 at 5:20 PM
Cindy M. & MB4: True. Actually “all of the above” is the answer.
What I want to know is where are well financed 527 groups on our side who could do some of the dirty work? Whether McCain wanted it or not. I mean, the left is loaded down w/rich 527 type orgs. Where are ours? We have rich people on our side! I have my own theory about why we don’t, but its not pretty. Not pleasant. DD
