Blackout: Pelosi turns off the lights as GOP demands action on drilling; Update: Video added; Update: Protest ends — with “God Bless America”

posted at 2:00 pm on August 1, 2008 by Allahpundit

A transparent stunt but an awfully shrewd one. The cameras are off so we’re forced to rely on Politico for running updates. What a scene:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi’s refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess…

“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”

Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker’s Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.

“You’re not covering this, are you?” complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans “morons” for staying on the floor…

The scene on the floor is kind of crazy. Normally, members are not allowed to speak directly to the visitor galleries, or visitors are prohibited from cheering. But in this case, the members are walking up and down on the floor during their speeches, standing on cheers, the visitors are cheering loudly. Some members even brought in visitors, who are now sitting on the House floor in the seats normally filled by lawmakers, cheering and clapping. Very funny.

GOP whip Roy Blunt issued a statement asking all Republican House members who are still in town to come to the floor. Exit question: What are the odds that someone there will be smart enough to fetch a camcorder from one of the offices near the chamber and record this for YouTubing? Eric Cantor, the deputy whip, has shown some ‘Net savvy in the past. Chop chop.

Update: And no sooner do I write those words than I get a tip that Rep. John Culberson is taping — and Twittering! — outside the chamber. Stay tuned. Click the image to watch.

Update: The boss is pleased, especially with the use of new media to get the word out.

My main post on the House GOP revolt is here and I’ll keep updating it. But I’m breaking out a separate post on the Republicans’ very savvy use of Twitter to circumvent the Democrat blackout and overcome the absence of C-SPAN cameras– and their outreach to conservative blogs to spread the word.

This is the change we’ve been waiting for, Beltway GOP.

Finally!

Update: Pete Hokestra says Capitol Hill security is ready to shut down the party promptly at 4:30 lest the GOP reap any more goodwill from this than they already have. Meanwhile, Politico’s still updating fast and furiously. Money quote:

Rep. Tom Cole (Okla.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the dimly lit chamber is a “vision of the future by the Democrat Party: The lights are out, there’s no power, and the air conditioning is gonna go off soon.”

Update: It’s all over as of 5 p.m., carried off to the tune of “God Bless America.” NBC says even congressmen not known for oratory caught the fee-vah in the chamber. Says Mike Pence, “We will be here through the break.”

As a professional racist, it was easy for me. I have years of advanced racist training, so it’s a painless process of transforming every word I write into a racially-charged insult for one person or the other.

It takes years of highly involved training, though. I don’t recommend it to everyone. And most certainly, do not try this at home!

I have a worthless Dem representative, who was gerrymandered into my district. As a result of today’s action I intend to write to the local paper asking “Why did you (Moran) vote to adjourn without starting to fix the problem?” To help the country. we need to apply pressure on our representatives. And I will call his office to ask his staff if there will be a special session.
Thanks for energizing me.

I hate this compromise gang of ten talk. That means it will be so watered down loaded up with enviro rules drilling will never happen . When Republicans compromise with liars they get rolled. Don’t be played for the fool. Drill Here, drill now, drill often!

Wonder what would happen if a 1/2 million or so visitors were waiting outside the capital with pitchforks when these asshat clowns return from vaction . First day back! Kind of a welcome home if you will.

I don’t see any reason why this revolution has to end. I think that everyone could call their Congressman (those who didn’t attend this afternoon’s soiree are home by now) and demand to know why they weren’t there. For those that shook the Capitol to the ground, they deserve a hero’s welcome. And, finally, we can make sure to get the message out to the American people, so that August the First will never be forgot.

MB007 on August 1, 2008 at 8:16 PM

keemo:

Juan McCain is not the one who sent everyone home. You know the fact that John McCain is running against the Messiah for the presidency should kind of balance out some of the snark from the right. Newt Gingrich did an ad for environmental something or other with Pelosi. Bush congratulated her on being the first woman Speaker. The fact that these men are respectful with the woman does not mean they agree with her.

Terrye on August 1, 2008 at 8:39 PM

And I think there might be compromise energy bill because Obama is starting to sweat here and the Democrats are hearing from the folks back home. I don’t imagine Pelosi will like that too much. Her own party might abandon her here. It will be interesting to see.

Somebody could always post a recipe for me to try this weekend!

RushBaby on August 1, 2008 at 7:25 PM

Do you like Garlic? I mean, really love garlic? If so, this is delicious, but be warned it does have some after affects. I wouldn’t bother making it without at least two entire bulbs of garlic, though, unless you have stomach problems. The original recipe hardly called for any but I left it in.

Baked Garlic Soup
Serves 4 – 6

4 or more cloves of crushed garlic (I prefer two or more entire bulbs)
2 cups diced tomatoes
3-5 zucchini, sliced
2 onions, sliced
½ green pepper, diced
1 can (approximately 15 ounces) garbanzo beans, un-drained
1 cup grated Romano cheese
1 ¼ cups grated Monterey Jack cheese
1 ¼ cup heavy cream (half and half works OK but doesn’t seem to blend with the cheese as well)
1 ½ cups dry white wine
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon basil
1-2 bay leaves

Preheat oven to 375’
Butter a 4-quart or larger baking dish. Mix all ingredients except the cheeses and cream in dish. Cover and bake for 1 ¼ hours.
Heat the cream in microwave. Stir cheeses into soup first and then add the cream, stirring constantly. Return to oven, bake an additional 20 minutes or so until the cheese is melted, being careful not to let soup boil.
TIP: Heating times assume vegetables are at room temperature.

It’s not for everybody but I love it.

Relax Terrye, McCain gets my vote. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve to hear from me when he says really stupid things, and I’m telling ya, saying he has deep respect for Nancy Pelosi is a really stupid thing when he needs to assure us that he won’t saddle up next to the witch as Arnold has done out in California.

This stunt by miss piggy has the ability to provide electricity to the base if McCain can tap into this energy. Miss piggy could have opened the flood gates with this move. Let the American people suffer while I get in my private jet and enjoy some quality time with my people out in San Fran… You people stop your whining and go for a bike ride or something; I’m the leader of the house damn-it, I deserve my private jet so just quiet down now and go about your lil petty business.

So, who’s up for the challenge? I got a few vacation days I can commit. What about you?

lsutiger on August 1, 2008 at 9:18 PM

Keemo:

Why take an issue like this and use it as an excuse to criticize McCain? It is pointless. I don’t like Pelosi either, but I am not running for president. It would be tacky for McCain to go after Pelosi on a personal level in an election year. He can disagree with her politics, which he has, on energy and the war and taxes just to mention a few. The fact that he does not call her Miss Piggy while he is at it, does not mean they are best friends. I have watched politicians do this dance for years. We all have. We expect them to be at least civil when possible. People get really tired of that bickering stuff. It is one thing to stand your ground for an important issue, it is another to personally insult the Speaker of the House. That will not help McCain win any elections, they would just call him sexist, out of control and senile along with racist.

JellyToast on August 1, 2008 at 10:11 PM

Time for that time honored old organizing tactic of the left called a sit-in. Except it should be the Republican member so the house.

Maybe if enough angry constituents show up with pitchforks in hand at the offices of the Democratic congressmen they might get the message. Then again, don’t count on it. The Democrats seem to believe that they have a special dispensation from the goddess which relieves them of all need to think logically.

Seriously, this is a great issue for the Republicans to get behind, and campaign hard. Name names. Did your opponent vote to cut off debate? Be sure the voters know. Be sure the voters know about it each time they fill up the tank on the car, or pay the utility bill. ‘Thanks Democratic Rep so and so for my 40% rise in energy prices.’ This might be the one thing that would kick some serious butts – the war is less of an issue. and the Demis sat around navel-gazing and talking about impeachments and investigations of federal appointees instead of dealing with the people’s business, like energy costs.

Vote the Democratic rascals out!

Orson Buggeigh on August 1, 2008 at 10:29 PM

Obama Shifts, Says He May Back Offshore Drilling

I say we don’t let him get away with it. No compromise. Drill Here. Drill There. Drill EVERYWHERE. Drill Now. Pay Less. No negotiation. The people are with us!

Ordinary1 on August 1, 2008 at 10:30 PM

Hoekstra tweeted that he’s going home in the morning (he had the last flight out of DC tonight, but it got cancelled). Perhaps there are no more festivities coming. Pence said something about staying in DC for the whole recess if necessary, but maybe it’s just him and a few die-hards. Somebody needs to keep pressuring the president to call the special session this thing was supposedly all about.

aero on August 1, 2008 at 10:34 PM

From the article:

Shifting from his previous opposition to expanded offshore drilling, the Illinois senator told a Florida newspaper he could get behind a compromise with Republicans and oil companies to prevent gridlock over energy.

Whatever dude. You will not be allowed to shift in the spirit of compromise.

Unfortunately, I can here it now on MSNBCBS, “Much like McCain shifted his position on drilling… blah blah blah.”

Obama is recognizing he has lost this issue. He’s gonna try to spin it and get elected.

Me too Baxter…….It’s nice to see more that just conservatives rise up and and get riled when a real injustice is taking place in OUR nation. The democratic party’s stench on this issue goes to the heart of everyone—-AND POCKET BOOKS—-the weakness of any argument is staggering.

What an embarrassing way for the neocon’s “permanent majority” to end (haha), in a blatant attempt to steal from our children and give to the oil companies.

Good riddance.

What a pleasure for one of you liberals to show up and chafe at the embarrassment your party (haha)’s has suffered at the hands of the NeoRethugliJoooos who will see to it that my children understand basic economics and natural freedom.

Good weekend.

Hey Alphie, Do the lights in your pea-brain ever come on in your world? Your liberal friends will be the ones who will be doing the exiting come November. And the “good riddance” will come from the other side of the isle.

And when you stop to purchase gas, please remember to hold your breath—–the fumes have obviously soaked into your braincells.

I’m sure those tourists will remember their visit to the Capitol forever. I wish I could have been there!

That will fix the problem.

Gideon7 on August 1, 2008 at 11:48 PM

Thanks Gideon7. Your solution fixed it. I couldn’d get through to a bunch of sites and couldn’t figure out why. I tried my old XP pc and it wouldn’t work either, so I went to my WII game online site since it uses the opera browser and I had no problem going to the sites. So I figured Firefox would probably work also and after downloading and setting it up, I had no problems going to the sites. After reading your solution, I did it and now my IE works ok. Thanks again.

That’s one of my reasons for liking HotAir so much. Lots of smart tech savy people here.

WildBillK on August 2, 2008 at 12:51 AM

I just recently added Firefox to my computer. I’m glad I did. If I had just the one web browser, I wouldn’t have been able to get here to find out what to do!

So says the supporter of the worst Congress in the history of this Nation:

Confidence in Congress: Lowest Ever for Any U.S. Institution
Just 12% of Americans express confidence in Congress

PRINCETON, NJ — Gallup’s annual update on confidence in institutions finds just 12% of Americans expressing confidence in Congress, the lowest of the 16 institutions tested this year, and the worst rating Gallup has measured for any institution in the 35-year history of this question.

(Congress hits single digits: Rasmussen

When Democrats won majorities in both chambers of Congress, they pointed to the falling approval ratings of the legislature as a mandate for change. They have certainly provided it — albeit in the wrong direction. Rasmussen’s latest polling shows the approval ratings for Congress have reached a new low, and a new achievement … single digits:)

What’s this!! democrats taking money from big oil,
But what about the kids!!!,the babies!!!!,AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!

Fact Check
Obama’s Oil Spill

March 31, 2008
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/print_obamas_oil_spill.html

Obama says he doesn’t take money from oil companies. We say that’s a little too slick.
Summary
In a new ad, Obama says, “I don’t take money from oil companies.”

Technically, that’s true, since a law that has been on the books for more than a century prohibits corporations from giving money directly to any federal candidate. But that doesn’t distinguish Obama from his rivals in the race.

I wonder if any of the oil companies Senator Ted Kennedy’s family owns are killing kids too.
